Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also informing others of their passing. They can also serve as a historical record of a person's life and achievements.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also offer assistance in writing and publishing obituaries.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include a brief biography, achievements, and funeral service details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and within 200-500 words. The goal is to provide a brief summary of the person's life without overwhelming readers with too much information.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help personalize the obituary and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, contact the paper's obituary department directly or use their online submission form. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary, such as Legacy.com, Tributes.com, or Facebook Memorial Pages. These platforms often offer more flexibility and reach than traditional newspaper obituaries.

Is there a cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary varies depending on the platform or newspaper. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge by the word or line.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline for an obituary depends on the platform or newspaper. Online platforms may publish immediately, while traditional newspapers may take several days or weeks to print.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer to keep the obituary private, you can opt for a private or password-protected online memorial page. Alternatively, you can choose not to publish an obituary at all.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Yes, many families choose to include a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased person's legacy.

How do I notify social security about a death?

You should notify Social Security Administration (SSA) as soon as possible after the death by calling 1-800-772-1213 or visiting their website. This will help prevent fraud and ensure any benefits are stopped.

What other notifications need to be made after a death?

In addition to Social Security, you may need to notify other government agencies, banks, creditors, insurance companies, and relevant institutions about the death.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?
