Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to share news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community members. They provide a sense of closure and allow people to pay their respects to the deceased. Obituaries can also be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also offer assistance in writing an obituary as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, and information about their survivors (spouse, children, grandchildren, etc.). It may also include details about their occupation, hobbies, achievements, and any notable accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform it will be published in. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some print publications allow you to include photos, videos, or audio clips to enhance the tribute to your loved one.

Contact the newspaper or online platform directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment (if required) for publication.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers and online sites charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals or free listings.

Can I write my own obituary before I pass away?

Yes, it's becoming more common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. It's often used when a full obituary is not possible or desired.

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's death, while a eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help make the tribute more personal and relatable.
