Raiford Kenner - May 28, 1931 - December 27, 2021

Departed: 12/27/2021 (Ridge Spring)
Obituary Preview: Words cannot convey the depths of sorrow we feel upon the passing of our beloved “Ray”.  Mr. Raiford “Ray” Kenner, the son of the late Mr. James Kenner and the late Mrs. Willie Mae Raiford Kenner, was born in Ridge Spring, SC on May 28, 1931.  He departed this life on Monday, December 27, 2021.
While we rejoice that he has entered into the presence of our Lord, there is now emptiness in our own lives that we mourn.  Time may ease the pain of our grief, but it will never diminish the void that remains in our hearts from his absence.  Ray loved people and loved to talk; he “never met a stranger”.
As a young child, Ray attended Ridge Hill Baptist Church in Ridge Spring, SC, and was educated in the public schools of Saluda & Edgefield counties.  He was a proud student of Bettis Academy.  The school’s primary focus was on industrial education, but at a time when the State neglected the education of its Black citizens, Bettis Academy offered educational opportunities for Blacks when few other professions were available.
Ray began his working career at an early age and worked in numerous positions during his lifetime, as well as in various locations, i.e. New York, Maryland, South Carolina, etc.  Some of his positions included: Educational Supplies Salesman with Ben Covington School Supplies and a wide variety of construction work through the Carpenters’ Union.  For many years, Ray was a devoted member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Southeastern Local Union # 1778 and subsequently, Local Union #283.   He was also an active member of Corinthians Masonic Lodge #11.  Upon his retirement, Ray devoted a great deal of his time to gardening.  Growing varied and unique organic vegetables was his true passion – Raze Organic Grown Products.  He appeared to be happiest close to the earth and would spend all day in the garden.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, James Kenner and Willie Mae Raiford Kenner Allen, and a brother, James Kenner, Jr.  He leaves behind: his daughter, Pamela McClean, and sons, Anthony Kenner and Raiford Kenner, Jr., of New York, NY; grandchildren, Anthony Kenner, Jr., and Britney Kenner of Jericho, NY; great grandchildren, Anthony Kenner, III, and Hailey Kenner; two devoted step-daughters, Joan Oliver and Gwendolyn Bellamy of Columbia, SC; step-grands - Lacretia Bellamy, Rupert Bellamy, Jr., Marcus Oliver, and Dana Oliver of Atlanta, GA, and Tanika Bellamy of Columbia SC; three brothers, Joe “Sonny” Allen, of Orlando, FL, Will Allen (Cyndy) of Milwaukee, WI, and Tommy Allen of Orlando, FL; a dear aunt, Lessie Raiford of Hempstead, NY; special cousins, Janice Raiford of Queens Village, NY, Kathy Raiford (Darryl) Gaul of Hempstead, NY and Rev. Karen Kenner of Silver Springs, MD; a host of other relatives and friends, including special friends, Rev. J. P. Neal of Columbia, SC, and David Gurr, of Aiken, SC.
