Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life, accomplishments, and personality.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charity donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are usually concise, ranging from 100 to 200 words. Online obituaries can be longer, often between 200 to 500 words or more.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. However, keep in mind that your loved ones may still need to make adjustments or additions after your passing.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search for old obituaries through online archives, genealogy websites, or local libraries. Many newspapers also maintain archives of past issues that can be accessed for a fee. Additionally, some funeral homes and cemeteries may keep records of past services and obituaries.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online obituaries can often be edited or updated by the original author or funeral home staff.

What is a death notice?
