Mavis Ilene Myhran - December 02, 1927 - April 11, 2022

Departed: 04/11/2022 (Wayzata)
Obituary Preview: On April 11, 2022, Mavis Ilene Myhran was welcomed home by her husband Dean, son Brooks, brothers John “Arden” and Stanley Anderson, and loving parents John “Swede” and Selma Anderson.
Born December 2, 1927 in Brookston, Minnesota into humble beginnings, Mavis’ life was filled with adventure, a loving family and adoring friends. She and Dean married on September 6, 1952 and made their first home at the Hartley Building in Duluth, Minnesota. During the decade pre-kids, Dean and Mavis enjoyed the “high society” of 1950’s Duluth, filling their days with sailing on Lake Superior, skiing, sports cars, weekends at friends’ cabins and dinners at the Kitchi Gammi Club. They welcomed Brooks Dean (1961), Erik Kyle (1962) and Anders Dale (1967) to their family and in 1969 relocated to Wayzata, Minnesota.  A devoted wife and mother, the family enjoyed numerous ski trips out west, all things Wayzata basketball, and above all a home with an unlocked front door that was open and welcome to one and all.
After graduating from high school in 1945, Mavis tried her hand as a nursing aid but quickly realized that wasn’t her calling. She attended business school and in 1946 started working in the Probation Office in the Court House as a secretary. She worked there for 14 years becoming an office manager, and in her own words “loving it!” After the family settled in Wayzata, Mavis worked and volunteered at Wayzata Community Church in a variety of roles on and off for over two decades.
A gifted cultivator of friendship, she was an attentive listener and interested in every aspect of your life. She’s been described as classy, sassy and feisty. She was full of life and endeared herself to everyone she met. She was wicked at crossword puzzles, a Kennedy clan devotee and avid reader.
A doting mother and grandmother, Mavis is survived by her sons Erik (Teri), Anders (Lynn), grandchildren: Austin (Libby), Bennett (Jenny), Chase (Marisa), Lindsay (Vince) Garver, Blake (Tara), Sarah, Hartley, Livia, and great-grandsons Corky Ray Myhran and Jack Louis Myhran.

Departed: 03/23/2022 (Wayzata)
Obituary Preview: Blanchard, Carol Lee, took a step to her next journey on a snowy day in Minneapolis on March 23, 2022.  The blanket of snow and the bareness of the trees on an early Spring day was the perfect closure of her time here and set the stage for her move to her next scene.  Her spirit, love, creativity, and caring continues in her three children and seven grandchildren, as well as her extended family, close friends, and countless others she has loved.  Many are blessed to have learned lessons from Carol (aka Mom, Nana, Neener).  She kept life simple for herself and spent her time helping others.  She worked for children in crisis, assisted mothers who wanted to rejoin their children, and spent countless hours helping her own kids and grandkids live a fulfilling life.  Of her many traits, we will remember her most from her motto, “keep it simple, stupid” and passion for the perfect key lime pie recipe.  Carol is survived by her children and grandchildren, John Bonner (wife Margo, children Jack and Colin), Emily Leach (husband Pat, children Michael, Jane and Matt) & Bob Bonner (wife Marj, children Ollie and Ella) and her sister, Shelley Weaver (aka Auntie Boo) (husband Dave, children Corey, Julie and Sarah).  Carol is reunited with her parents, Robert and Janet Blanchard, who passed way too early in her life to see what an amazing person she turned out to be.  Friends can visit with Carol’s family at David Lee Funeral Home, 1220 East Wayzata Boulevard, Wayzata on Friday, April 8, 2022 from 2 PM with the celebration of her life starting at 3 PM.  If you have it, wear a splash of lime green.  In Carol’s memory, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery (crisisnursery.org/donate) or any charity that furthers her efforts to help those that need care and love in this world.

Departed: 03/15/2022 (Wayzata)
Obituary Preview: Anytime was a good time to be on the lake with Rick behind the wheel of his boat named, “Sea Ya”. Though we stopped making new memories this week, we will cherish the memories we have with him. Richard Miller Stark, 75, of Plymouth, MN grew up in Minnetonka and lived on or around Lake Minnetonka his entire life.  A graduate of Shattuck (‘65) and Hamline University (‘70), he never applied for a job. Instead, he took the path of entrepreneurship.  Rick went on to grow many businesses, including his “Baby,”  Premier Technologies, Inc.  Through his wit and wisdom, we learned many valuable lessons for living a great life … Everyday should begin with a hot cup of Folgers coffee. We assured him that really any other brand of coffee tasted better, but he refused to trust us on this one.  #folgersbiggestfan
It’s always 5 o’clock somewhere. Cheers to your friends, often.
Be steadfast in your loyalty to those who reciprocate your unconditional love.
If a friend needs a place to stay for any length of time, open your doors and make room. Generous beyond measure, we were lucky to host many friends and family members over the years.
When you smell the rain moving in, the best seat in the house is on the porch. Nothing beats listening to and watching a Minnesota thunderstorm.
If all else fails, order the walleye sandwich at the Red Rooster or the Muni.
Rick was predeceased by his parents Harry and Myrle Stark, and sister Judy Bryce.  His spirit is carried on by his wife of 50 years, Janey; daughter Kristy; son Patrick and wife Tamara; grandchildren Cooper and Tyler Shannon, Gavin, Mason, Roman, Mika and Parker Stark; brother-in-law Christian and wife Sandy Koster; brother-in-law Terry and wife Jen Bryce; sister Mary Koster and many friends and family too numerous to list but not forgotten.

Departed: 03/15/2022 (Wayzata)
Obituary Preview: Long time Wayzata educator, John B. “Jack” Weeks died on March 15,2022 at Lake Minnetonka Shores surrounded by family and extraordinary caregivers. Funeral service at Oak Knoll Lutheran Church 600 Hopkins Crossroads, Minnetonka, Friday, April 1 at 2:00.  Visitation at the church beginning at 12:30. Reception following the service. Family burial service later in the day.  Pastor Jay Rudi leading the service. Livesteaming of the service:  https://youtu.be/fWqYuM5xkRE
The oldest of five children, Jack was born on April 27,1932 to Kenneth and Verna Weeks in Albert Lea, MN. He grew up “at the store” otherwise known as “Borland’s Grocery” and then the Piggly Wiggly.  Jack knew his way around the meat counter later teaching his children not to buy anything breaded and how lutefisk is really made.
Jack graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1950 and went on to Mankato Teachers College where he earned his degree in Elementary Education.  He later earned his Master’s in School Administration from the University of Minnesota.  This experience spurred his longtime devotion to all things “Gophers”.
His teaching career began at Beacon Heights Elementary as a sixth- grade teacher.  He moved to Widsten Elementary where he continued to teach sixth grade. Shortly after he became principal until it closed in 1989.  One of the joys of Jack’s career was planning the building and the move of staff and students.  The entire community walked from the old school to the new school. A very exciting moment for all.  He served as Gleason Lakes's principal until his retirement in 1992. He spent his entire career in the Wayzata Schools and was seen daily greeting students as they got off the bus in the morning and sending them to the buses at the end of the day. Jack had two or even more generations of area families in school.
In the summer of  4th grade , Jack meet Mary Ann Swenson at the summer recreation program in Albert Lea.  The were friends and classmates then started dating in high school. They married in December of 1956.
Jack and Mary Ann moved into their yellow house on 11th Avenue soon after they were married and raised two children, Kristin 1958 and Mark 1960 at their home. Jack lived at the same address until moving to Lake Minnetonka Shores in 2020. Jack and Mary Ann were involved in their community through many organizations and were long time member of Oak Knoll Lutheran Church serving the church in many ways.
In 1965, Jack became a member of the Wayzata Rotary Club. Serving as its President and receiving the Paul Harris Fellowship, an award recognizing distinguished service to the club and community.  From Rotary he had long- time, close friends that he dearly cherished.
Mary Ann suffered a stroke in 2001 leaving her without speech and paralyzed on her right side.  Jack became her advocate and caregiver while she resided at Lake Minnetonka Shores for seven years.  He found another community there and often lent a hand with the activities and support to the staff that was supporting his spouse.
Jack was an avid woodworker.  He had an amazing shop in the basement and after retirement he built many fun items for his family.  His dollhouses were often auction items at the Rotary Scholarship event.

Janet Schuett - Unknown - March 06, 2022

Departed: 03/06/2022 (Wayzata)
Obituary Preview: Janet Schuett never missed church, a perm, Bible study, a phone call from a loved one or a good game of bridge. She died surrounded by family, and with a perfect manicure, in Sarasota, Fla., on March 6, 2022.
She started every day with half a grapefruit and a cup of black tea after dressing in immaculately coordinated outfits with makeup to match. Her bird feeders were never empty and she read her piles of mail with a near-religious devotion.
She was a woman about town with more friends than she could count, and made new ones every day. She was magnetic. She charmed everyone from waiters to customer service representatives with her wit and warmth, and regularly had her drinks paid for by youthful admirers.
A notorious night owl, it was common to find her on the couch until early morning reading her mail and watching recorded tennis matches (Nadal against Djokovic would nearly tear her in half). No matter how late, she always picked up the phone eager to listen to whomever called her. “She had grace, compassion and an honest human care for others,” neighbor and friend Sandy Anderson said. “Everyone was her friend and she loved everyone.”
She was born in Sharon Center, Iowa, in 1933 to Lloyd and Ethel Meer Grout, followed two years later by her brother Jerry. The family settled in Waukesha, Wis., in 1944. She studied education and pledged Gamma Phi at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where she met her husband, John “Jack” Schuett.
She taught third grade until she and Jack married in 1956 and had Amy, John (Carmen), Becky and Tom (Jill) in quick succession. She opened her Orono home to groups of Amish and Mennonite women who quilted and filled the house with songs of praise.
She helped Jack run Schuett Investment Companies and became an independent interior designer, lending her impeccable taste to her other peoples’ homes.
Janet and Jack criss-crossed the country in their motorhome until his passing in 2013. Florida was her favorite destination, where her fashion and charm made her something of a celebrity at RV resorts.
She was a staple of the Grout and Meer reunions, where she cherished time and laughter with many close cousins.
In her ‘80s, she added more than a dozen countries to her passport. She went on African safaris, rode dune buggies in Dubai and danced at her Brazilian grandson’s wedding.
She had a deep resilience, fueled by an iron grip on her independence and a love of life. A fall in 2021 put her in the hospital for weeks and took her left eye. “The view of the river is great and they are so nice to me here,” was the first thing she told her grandson Evan from her ICU bed. She became a favorite of nurses and within a year she was back to living by herself and finishing more sudoku puzzles than one would think possible with one eye.
She will be missed for her grace, intelligence, compassion and joie de vivre.
In addition to her four children, she is also survived by her brother, Jerry (Nancy); exchange daughter, Cris, and grandchildren, Seth (Anna), Shayla (Andy), Mattea (Tony), Jessie (Nels), Tyler, Evan, Stacey (Chris), Peter (Jessie), Spencer (Julie), Sophie, Sam, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 22, at Messiah United Methodist Church, 17805 County Road 6 in Plymouth. Visitation 1 hour prior to service.

Obituary Preview: Mary Almina Hartzell, age 89, of Minnetonka, MN, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Friday, February 25, 2022.
She was born on November 6, 1932 to Clarence and Vera Miller in Minneapolis, MN and grew up in the Minneapolis area. When she was 12 years old, she heard the Gospel for the first time at a Salvation Army evangelistic meeting, responded and was saved. The next night her brother, George, gave his life to Christ at the same meeting. They later moved to a farm near St. Francis where she attended high school and was involved in starting a Christian Fellowship Club.  At one of those meetings her pastor invited a pastor from Russell, MN to speak. That pastor brought along a young Bethel student to be the soloist, named John Hartzell. John and Mary began writing to each other and later a courtship began.  After graduating, Mary made plans to attend Northwestern College and John decided to transfer there as well. They were engaged that fall and married on June 23, 1951.  From that time on, Mary was John's partner in life and ministry for the next 70 years.  Mary was always known to be a prayer warrior.  When her first child was born in 1953, she started the practice of praying for him every day, and continued with each child as they came along. Then, as each child married, she added their spouses, grandchildren, spouses of grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She would often seek out prayer requests from her children and also from friends and everyone she knew.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, daughter Suzanne, sisters Ruthie and Doris, and brother Harold. She is survived by her brother George (Lorraine) and her children: Tim (Lynne), Janna (Don), Mary Ann (Jeff), Dawn (Steve), and Paul (Holly), 22 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren.

Departed: 02/19/2022 (Wayzata)
Obituary Preview: Leo Thomas Collins              May 6, 1945 – February 19, 2022
Plymouth, MN – Leo Thomas Collins went to the front of the line in heaven on Saturday, February 19, 2022. His wife and family were by his side and in his heart as he received his last rites. The “honest broker,” athlete, coach, loving and beloved family patriarch, and master of joyful expression died due to complications from COVID-19. Leo was 76 years old. Having lived and worked in the Twin Cities area his entire career, he died in Florida, where his retirement winters were spent in Sandestin. A kind-hearted man whose soul pumped with compassion and purpose, Leo’s life was devoted to his family, friends, and giving back to his community. His love for the University of Notre Dame, his active participation in athletics, and his dedicated commitment to charitable causes consumed his days.
Leo was born in Alexandria, MN, on May 6, 1945, and grew up in Fargo, ND, the eldest of eight children. At Fargo Shanley High School, he was an honor student, Eagle Scout, Roger Maris Award recipient, and All-American football player, lettering in several sports. Following his father’s footsteps to Notre Dame, he played both hockey and football, was a member of the 1966 National Championship Football Team and was pivotal in the resurgence of ice hockey at Notre Dame. Leo obtained a Bachelor’s in Business and Economics in 1967, later receiving a Master of Economics degree from the University of St. Thomas.
His involvement in athletics nurtured his competitive spirit and polished his people-centric personality—traits that defined his success in business and philanthropy. After college, Leo briefly worked in business before transitioning to teaching and coaching (St. Thomas Academy, Henry Sibley, and Macalester College).  In 1980, he began his career as an investment advisor, retiring in 2013 as a Vice President for RBC Wealth Management.
Community service was at the core of Leo’s being. He served as a volunteer for the Catholic Church, Crossroads Africa, Peace Corp, St. Joseph’s Orphanage, The Special Olympics, U.S. Olympic Festival, Notre Dame Club of Minnesota, Notre Dame Senior Alumni Association, Interfaith Outreach, University of Minnesota Athletic Directors Advisory Council, St. Thomas Senior Center, and many more.
In 2006, RBC Dain Raucher awarded Leo the National Dick McFarland Volunteer of the Year for his work with Interfaith Outreach, including founding the Earl Cup Woodhill Classic Golf Tournament. In 2012, Leo was inducted into the Shanley High School Hall of Fame. He was also recognized by Mpls St. Paul Magazine for his volunteer work. Leo’s most recent honor was serving two terms as President of the Notre Dame Senior Alumni Association. His retirement years were spent volunteering, traveling, playing golf, and painting. Most Saturdays found Leo with members of the Notre Dame Alumni Association, serving breakfast to over 200 people at the Dorothy Day Center. He contributed to the Wayzata Depot Model Train Display and was a self-proclaimed comedic magician, entertaining any and all guests in his “Sports Bar.” Leo loved all fireworks and relaxed by painting scenes of the beautiful gardens he and Gwen built around their home. His effervescence for life was infectious. A long-time hockey goalie, he shared that love with his sons and grandsons. Leo will be forever #1 in our hearts!
Survivors include his wife, Gwen Wells-Collins; children Sean (Sandy) Collins, Minneapolis, MN; Babette (Todd) Wheelden, North Andover, MA; Colman (Kara Gonos) Collins, Hopkins, MN; and Gwen’s daughter, Taunya (Steve Morris) Wells, Los Angeles, CA; the “top four grandsons on the planet” Antonio Collins, Drake Wheelden, William Collins, and Fenix Wheelden; siblings Ken (Marci) Collins, Boulder, CO; Paul (Debbie) Collins, Clifton, VA; Mary Johnson, Walker, MN: Beth (Jim) Dutcher, Gillette, WY; Patrick (Teresita) Collins, Vero Beach, FL; Katie Collins, Brooklyn, NY; sister-in-law Linda Collins, Fargo, ND; cousins Kathy (Tad) Dunlap, Kensington, MN, and Keith (Jan) Bakke, St. Louis Park, MN; and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and teammates. Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements and other details. They can also be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, a friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral service, burial arrangements, and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of someone's passing, often including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is usually longer and provides more biographical information.
