Louise H. Waller - August 20, 1925 - March 12, 2022

Departed: 03/12/2022 (Fairport)
Obituary Preview: Louise Henrietta Hetzel Waller died on March 12, 2022 in Rochester NY. She was 96.
She is survived by her two daughters, Dr. Elizabeth Waller (Paul Nunes) and Susan Hipple (Tom Hipple), four granddaughters, Emily Nunes (Billy Jones), Julia Nunes, Sarah Hipple (Nigel Laracuente), Margaret Hackenberger (Kore Hackenberger), and her three great-grandchildren, Eva Jones, Luke and Nevin Hackenberger.
Louise Waller was born to a family of German descent in Chicago IL. She was an only child, the last of five births, all of whom died or were stillborn. She attended the University of Chicago where she met her husband of 19 years, Leslie Waller, author, whose early work she edited.
She and Les moved to New York City in the early 1950s, attending Columbia University and receiving master’s degrees in English. They spent summers on Fire Island NY, first as renters in Ocean beach, and then in Ocean Bay Park, where they built a house.
After the birth of her second child, she went to work full-time at Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Publishers. She became an editor and shepherded the words of several well-known writers, including Robert Frost, Kurt Vonnegut, Charles M. Schultz and Joanne Greenberg (I Never Promised You a Rose Garden).
Eventually she left the fiction branch at Holt, going on to the textbook department. In addition to editing, her job consisted of traveling around the country and the world to recruit academics to write new textbooks in their subject matter. Among them was James McConnell’s Understanding Human Behavior, for which he became a target of the Unibomber. She also took on a number of non-textbook projects, such as the revision of McClane’s New Standard Fishing Encyclopedia.
After many years in New York, she took an editing job in the Chicago area at Rand McNally to be near to and care for her father until his death. At age 60, she shaved a decade off her resume, and moved to Dubuque, IA to work for William C. Brown Publishing, editing primarily psychology and sociology texts. She later returned to New York City and took jobs at St. Martin’s Press, and then Columbia University Press.
After her retirement at 75, she became a docent at the Hudson River Museum, a volunteer job she enjoyed immensely. At age 80, she moved to Rochester NY, to take advantage of its top-tier medical facilities.
She was a life-long Democrat and animal-lover. She enjoyed theater, literature and art. Donations in her memory may be given to any charity which promotes these passions. The family will honor her privately.

Carl Norman Friedman - September 09, 1945 - February 07, 2022

Departed: 02/07/2022 (Fairport)
Obituary Preview: CARL NORMAN FRIEDMAN September 9, 1945 - February 7, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of the beloved patriarch of our family, Carl.  He passed away peacefully from a rapidly progressing illness on the evening of February 7, 2022.  He will be sadly missed by his wife, brothers, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family and friends.
Carl demonstrated a strong desire to help those in need at an early age. He achieved BSA Eagle Scout status, Order of the Arrow and continued with Explorers while still in his early years of high school. He worked at BSA summer Camps and taught life-saving skills.  He served as a Collins, NY volunteer fireman and also volunteered his time in community service programs to uplift others.
He graduated with a BS from MSU in KY.  He was a member of the Teacher Corp in Buffalo, NY for his MS and worked on a doctorate program at the University of Buffalo. He always joked about graduating “ABD,” (all but the dissertation)!  He eagerly continued on a life-long path of learning over the years, whether it was for fun or his career.
He was a member of high school and college wrestling teams, the Schenectady Curling Club, enjoyed playing golf, bowling, antiquing, camping and fishing in the Adirondacks, and even a few games of the neighborhood Thanksgiving Day touch football game.
Carl always shared his love of nature, animals and God with his family and friends.  He began his Catholic faith journey in Morehead, KY with a beloved priest, Father Edward Haggerty, who not only guided Carl through his studies in Catholicism, but celebrated the Sacraments of Marriage and his children’s Baptisms.  Carl’s spiritual journey continued to strengthen throughout the years, completing a two-year program with the Albany Catholic Diocese. He retired after serving 38 years with the New York State Department of Education.  He loved his career.  He always looked forward to the challenges and rewards of helping parents, students, and school personnel in need of guidance.  He was a member and served in leadership roles for the New York State Attendance Teachers Organization
and the International Association of Attendance Teachers.  Early on in his career he was an Assistant Principal, and while at BOCES developed  award-winning programs to assist students with their path to the future.
He cared for and was always ready to help those in need.
He took on challenges in a steadfast manner with determination.  His zeal for life was infectious.  He inspired our entire family to live life, enjoy the journey and most of all love….
Carl wished to be cremated.  There will be a Catholic Mass and Burial Service on Saturday May 7th at 11:00AM at Church of the Assumption 20 East Avenue. Fairport, NY. with Burial to follow at White Haven Memorial Park in the Maplewood Mausoleum.

William F. Space - May 01, 1941 - January 29, 2022

Departed: 01/29/2022 (Fairport)
Obituary Preview: William F. “Sam” Space of Fairport, NY passed away on 1/29/22 after a long journey with Alzheimer’s Disease.  Those who were lucky enough to know Sam know that he was larger than life and lived his life based on love and devotion to family and friends, service to country and community, and stories that he loved to share. Sam was born on May 1, 1941 in Williamsport, PA, the home of little league baseball, to Gerald and Ruth Space.  He was raised in Forty-Fort, PA and graduated High School in 1959. He attended Wilkes College and graduated with a BA in education and mathematics in 1963.  At the end of his senior year at Wilkes he was named “Young Man of the Year.”
Sam’s service to country began when he joined the United States Marine Corps in the summers of 1960 and 1962 in the Platoon Leader Class.  He received his commission as a Second Lieutenant upon graduation from Wilkes College.  He completed Naval Aviation training and became a Captain and navigator of F-4 fighter jets, flying over 400 missions during 2 tours in Vietnam. Sam received multiple recognitions and honors including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Navy Achievement Medal for Meritorious Service in Vietnam.
In 1970 Sam was honorably discharged from the Marines because he wanted to spend more time with his family.  He had met Bonnie, the love of his life in 1960.  Bonnie tells that he had seen her around and decided one weekend that he would spend time with her until he really got to know her.  By the end of the weekend they were dating, and by the next year they were engaged. They married in Wilkes-Barre, PA in June 1963.  Their beloved first child and only son, Michael arrived later that year.  Daughter Sharon arrived in 1964, and daughter Carol perfectly completed their family in 1968.
After the Marines he became a sales manager for Procter & Gamble where he worked until he retired in 2000.  His job with P&G brought him to Fairport in 1971 and he lived there until his death.  This is where his service to community flourished. Sam was active in the Fairport Packers youth football association.  The family spent weekends skiing at Ski Valley where Sam served as president and was active on the board and membership committee. He joined Rotary shortly after moving to Fairport and remained active in the club until recently, serving as president and being honored as a Paul Harris Fellow.  Sam also served on the Zoning Board of Appeals for Perinton for over 30 years and on the board of the Fairport Federal Credit Union.  After his retirement he became a rules official and served on the board of the Rochester District Golf Association.
Sam is survived by his loving family including his adored first wife of 58 years, Bonnie; son Michael Space, daughter Dr. Sharon Space, and daughter Carol Space Fisher and son-in-law Barry Fisher and Swiss exchange daughter Maja Bamert;  5 grandchildren he idolized including Emily Elizabeth, Eric, Julia, McGwire, and Will; sister Janet Curcio and niece Lisa; sisters-in-law Judy and Carol and brother in law Jim, and many nieces and nephews; and distant cousins Johnny Yakabuski and former Senator Delbert Cragle of Nebraska.
Rather than turn this into one of Sam’s endless stories that could entertain his family and friends for hours, we will end with a quote from Sam’s flight journal.  “I have too often looked death in the face to be afraid of him now.”  You’re right Sam, death should be afraid of you.  We love you and we miss you.
Celebration of Life will take place on May 13, 2022 from 4:00PM -7:00PM at The Perinton Community Center. 1350 Turk Hill Road.  Fairport, NY. 14450, with a service at 4:30 PM. Sam’s family asks that you view a video featuring Sam speaking of his military service at https://youtu.be/7ILaAuWHOOo We also ask that you share all your stories and pictures of Sam with us via email at rememberingsamspace@gmail.com

Pittsford NY – Passed away peacefully on September 2, 2021, at age 73. Predeceased by his parents, Jack and Mary Howe, and brother Carl.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Janice (“Jani”); uncle Guy L. (Bud) Howe, cousins and many life-long friends whom he considered as family too.
Janice would like to thank our extended family and friends who supported John during his illness and to the UofR health care professionals, especially his doctors who John called his special friends, for their extraordinary care and support.
A private burial will be held.  Friends  are invited to a Memorial Service on Friday October 15, 2021 at 2:00 PM in All Seasons Chapel at White Haven Memorial Park.  Following that a Celebration of John's  life will take place at 4:00 PM in Powder Horn Lodge in Powder Mills Park. in lieu of flowers, you are invited to make a donation to Camp Good Days and Special Times or a charity of your choice in John’s memory.
John was born in Rochester, NY on October 13, 1947.  He had a happy, adventurous childhood growing up in Long Meadow, Pittsford NY.  He loved spending summers with his parents boating and fishing out of Henderson Harbor on Lake Ontario  and travelling on the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands. His two most favorite places on the Lake were Galoo Island and Main Duck Island.  He also spent several fun-filled summers at the Y’s Camp Corey.
Following his High School education at Sutherland H.S., he entered the U. S. Navy in 1964 and served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam as a Radioman in cryptographic communications with top secret security clearance, received a Unit Citation and in 1968 an Honorable Discharge in 1968.  From 1969 to 1976 John travelled the world as a Merchant Seaman on various steamship lines.  From 1976 to 1980 John and Jani owned and operated a carpet cleaning business in Long Beach, California.
In 1980, John and Jani relocated to Rochester with their beloved parrot “Bunga.”  He then began his 25-year career at the University of Rochester’s Central Utilities where he became Operating Engineer responsible for operation of all equipment for delivery of steam and chilled water to the University Medical Center and River Campus.
John worked very hard, but he also knew how to have fun and was always up for an adventure.  For 20 years, when not working, he and Jani had many thrilling summers on their beautiful wooden Chris Craft sea skiff, “Marzoc,” which they restored and kept at Henderson Harbor.  John was so excited to share with Jani and friends his favorite fishing spots on the Lake.  And every summer included trips and over-night stays at Galoo Island, Main Duck Island and the Thousand Islands.
John retired in 2005 and bought his dream boat, which he researched for over a year before ordering.  He named the 36’ Mainship, “Jani.”  The couple decided to keep the boat at Pultneyville and joined the Pultneyville Yacht Club where many more adventures were enjoyed and many new friends were made, some of them so special they became life-long friends and family.  Winters,  John and Jani spent time in Florida and often returned to California and Nevada to visit friends and family.  John also became interested in working out and developed a lasting friendship with his trainer.
Following a life-threatening illness in 2010, (from which he miraculously recovered after nearly two years) John joined the YMCA in Pittsford and worked out rigorously five days a week.  He bonded with several amazing people there, some of whom became so close that he considered them part of his extended family.
During that time John also served as a dedicated volunteer every Thursday for Unity’s Medical/Oncology Unit at the St. Mary’s campus.   His compassion and love for people brought much joy to patients there over the years.  He often reflected on how much he admired the strength and positive attitude that the medical professionals and many of the patients projected during the difficult times they endured.
John had a dynamic personality with an extraordinary curiosity and love for life and all living things.  He had a gift of encouragement, and he always believed the best in everyone he met.  He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh and entertain others with his colorful stories and silly sayings.  He was a wonderful human being, totally authentic and remarkably stable.  He was a very grateful and happy person with unconditional love and a perpetual sense of optimism.  He will be sorely missed and never forgotten.

She was born Barbara Ann Ellsworth on November 13, 1938, in Phoenix, Arizona, the second of four children born to the late Russell Smith and Mary Helene (Worlton) Ellsworth.  A descendant of Mormon pioneers, she attended Brigham Young University, where she was active in singing groups, and the University of Pennsylvania, where she received a PhD in immunology under a National Science Foundation fellowship.  At Penn, she changed her name from Barbara to Stephanie, and met and married Lawrence David Sher in 1967.  They subsequently lived for the next year in Shiraz, Iran, where they had been invited to teach as visiting academics.  Stephanie and Larry moved to Boston in 1971 and Stephanie taught immunology at MIT, where she was on the team of scientists who developed artificial skin for burn victims, allowing many more of them to survive.  When her lab was spun off into a private company in the mid-1980s, she taught herself a computer programming language and operated a successful consultancy for the next 15 years.
Stephanie had three lifelong passions:  Her husband, Larry; the right of individuals to die with dignity and choices in care; and horses, especially Icelandics. She kept a stable of horses for the last half of her life, and especially enjoyed breeding and training them.  She and Larry took horseback riding vacations all over the world.
