Steven Riggio - March 07, 1954 - April 21, 2022

Departed: 04/21/2022 (Barrington)
Obituary Preview: Steven “Steve” Riggio, age 68, of Fort Myers, Fl, formerly of Barrington, IL passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2022.
The Riggio family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of Steve.
He was born on March 7, 1954 in Chicago, IL to Joe and Rosalyn Riggio. Steve graduated from Schaumburg High School in Schaumburg, IL in 1972 before attending Western Illinois University the following fall. A passionate gymnast in his formative years, he turned his love of balance, immense resilience and unrelenting courage into building Riggio/Boron Ltd., a highly successful and prominent leader in caulking and façade restoration in and around Chicago.
Over the span of his successful career, Steve’s contributions include President of Chicago’s Chapter of the Association of Subcontractors and Affiliates (ASA) as well as an Executive Member of the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings (CCHRB). Steve’s participation and constant commitment to such organizations was a testament to his resolve to uphold the integrity, history and growth and its historical architecture.
Steve’s positive impact and dedication to the community reached even further than the Chicago skyline. As an involved member and supporter of The National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, Steve was dedicated to celebrating the heritage and representation of youth in sports. He also found great joy as a member of the McGraw Club at the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation in Dundee, IL where he founded and hosted the annual Ice Fishing Derby. An avid gamesman with great interest in fishing and hunting, Steve never missed an opportunity to combine his love for the outdoors with spending time with what he often referred to as his greatest accomplishment, his children. This was never more apparent than when he, an annual competitor at The OZ Invitational Fishing tournament in Islamorada, FL, broke the glass ceiling of the historically male-dominated tournament by being the first to compete alongside his daughters, a tradition that has irrevocably changed the tournament for the better.
Steve’s primary purpose and greatest source of joy was spending quality time with his children, grandchildren, and loved ones. Whether it was snowmobiling in the UP, boating on the Fox River, or simply gathering around him while he played the guitar, his love was infectious. He was passionate about cooking and entertaining and embraced any opportunity to celebrate the milestones and accomplishments of those he held so dear. Known affectionately as “Daddio” by not only his beloved daughters but many of their close friends, Steve’s charisma and commanding personality will forever be missed. While his absence is incredibly evident, in his wake is a legacy of unrelenting fervor and spirit, to which we are eternally grateful.
Steve is survived by his mother, Rosalyn Riggio (Donatello) of Chapel Hill, NC; his children, Stephanie Riggio and Crystal (Mark) Marino; Katie (Dane) Waggoner, grandchildren, Breanna Ross, Bryce Marino, Nate Marino, Sebastian Marino, Stevie Marino; his great-grandkid, Genevieve; his siblings, Jeff (Yearha) Riggio of Chapel Hill NC, Rich (Maria) Riggio of Chapel Hill, NC, and his 5 nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Riggio; and his daughter, Melissa Riggio-Danek.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 6, 2022 from 2-9 p.m. at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 149 W Main St. (Lake-Cook Rd) Barrington, IL. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home the following morning on Saturday May 7, 2022 at 11:00 a.m.
Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Barrington.

This past year in particular was very hard on him. His family is incredibly grateful to the many healthcare professionals who have cared for him over the years. He had some truly amazing people looking out for him, providing exceptional care every step of the way. The family writes: “We hope there is a beautiful Northwoods lake there where you are now with great walleye fishing. Departed: 04/08/2022 (Barrington)
Obituary Preview: Christian Boissonnas, 80, of Lake Barrington Illinois, passed away surrounded by his loving family on April 8, 2022.  He was born in Paris, France on March 21, 1942 to Marie-Louise Lobenstine and Remi Boissonnas.  Christian is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Barbara, their daughter Stephanie Cole and sons Roger and Eric Boissonnas and David and Jim Dunlap.  They all were a source of great love and pride for him. He also leaves his brother Jean in Belgium, brother Alain and his sister Marie-Christine in France as well as 15 grandchildren, 2 greatgrandchildren and his former wife, Susan King.
Christian left France in 1960 to attend Cornell University.  He spent his entire career as an administrator in the Cornell University Libraries until his retirement in 2001. He and Barbara moved to Illinois in 2003.
Christian spent his life in service to others.  He was a volunteer fireman, a fire chief, an Emergency Medical Technician and was on the Suicide Prevention phone lines for 10 years, where he was elected Chairman of the Board. He stepped up to lead Boy Scout Troop 4 when no one else was available. He mentored countless young librarians over the years. After moving to Illinois he was elected to his Town Board and later was elected Chairman of his Condo Board and member of the community’s governing body.
He was devoted to his family and unflinchingly provided a strong, solid foundation of fiscal responsibility and ethical behavior with great love and affection. He treated everyone he met with dignity and respect, and was genuinely interested in learning about their lives. A great reader of all sorts of genres, his curiosity about science and the universe was insatiable.
Christian loved all kinds of animals and noticed things about them that no one else ever imagined. His intuition about them was remarkable.  He drew great pleasure from a long list of rescued dogs and cats over the years, and even when it was no longer possible to walk a dog, he so missed having a pet around that we adopted a cat.
Christian had a delightful sense of humor, often with a little twinkle of his French point of view. Everyone loved to be with him for the kindness, wisdom and generosity he always showed.  At the same time, he was exceedingly humble, never boasted or was willing to accept praise for his brilliant mind and good works.  Extremely proud of his French heritage, Christian will be deeply missed by family, friends and colleagues all over the world.

Barbara Kemp - November 08, 1946 - April 06, 2022

Departed: 04/06/2022 (Barrington)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Kemp passed away peacefully April 6, 2022, at her home surrounded by her loving family.  She was born November 8, 1946 in Indianapolis to Raymond and Rita Grote.  Barbara vividly remembered the day she moved into her new home at the age of four, she looked out the window and saw a boy with his dog, pulling a wagon down the street.  She quickly became friends with his family, and years later she began dating that boy, attending frequent school dances, the prom, and then marrying that boy with the dog and a wagon, Donald Grant Kemp Jr, in 1967. In childhood, Barbara was a model student and athlete at Holy Spirit Grade School in Indianapolis where she eventually acted as a student teacher to younger students and yet was more well-known as the star kickball player who kicked the ball clear over the school and church every game.  She also enjoyed singing in the church choir at all masses each weekend and the Catholic Youth Organization.
Barbara graduated from Scecina Memorial High School in Indianapolis in 1964, top-ranked in her class.  She had many jobs growing up from babysitting to painting houses and garages, fixing fences, repairing roofs, planting a garden, and more.  She started a job at age 16 working for the phone company as an Operator, saved money and bought her own clothes and her first car, a red Volkswagon Bug.  What surprised her most as she later reflected about the time was how long clothing and hairspray lasted once she married and moved away from her 7 younger siblings, whom she adored as she teased them or told them scary stories if they didn’t go to bed on-time. Engaged at age 16, Barbara also began saving up for her wedding dress, which she bought then sewed and modified in various ways to improve it before the big day.  Don returned from Vietnam in 1967, and the two were married at Holy Spirit Church after a hilarious story about getting the marriage license, which you’ll have to hear about in person from a family member at her services.  Married on Easter Sunday afternoon, permitted only with a special request to the Diocese she had to make in advance, as Don was required to report for duty in Delaware in the next few days.  If you knew Barbara, you know she was quick on her feet when resolving issues in nearly every situation and these were not exceptions.  That said, her biggest challenge on wedding day was getting time alone in their 1-bath home to a family of 10.  After learning to cook for 2 instead of 10, she decided to take up political actions and phoned into the radio stations regularly to speak about the women’s rights, minorities, and a myriad of topics popular in the 1960’s.  An athlete, adventurist, and used to working with young people, she became a Boy Scout Leader, and one of her favorite events was white-water rafting.  This time in life had an impact on how she raised her children, having three daughters in Scouts who each became Scout Leaders and all grandchildren participating in Scouting, including two Eagle Scouts, Sean and Ryan. Moving back to Indianapolis and beginning a family, Barbara and Don loved traveling, camping, and boating.  Weekends and week-long vacations were well prepared events, packing the GTO or later the van to camp somewhere in the continental United States.  Barbara made it to all the Lower 48 States.  Yes, this adventure began in the ‘70’s and the photos of Don and Barbara and their personally-customized van are must-see’s. Barbara did go back to the phone company in Indy.  She worked up until mandatory leave, which in that day meant she had to quit her job to have a baby.  Always a hard worker, her old boss called her back to work again after her second baby and she decided to work there a little while. After work and while the girls were in school, and between college classes at Indiana University, Barbara and Don ran the local t-ball league for a few years.  Coaching a team and umpiring was Don’s role while Barbara played practice assistant coach (watch for line drives from her power swing, kids!) and running the concession stand on game nights.  There were many exciting nights at the ball field for Barbara, especially that one time the phone pole that carried electricity to the metal concession stand was struck by lightning with Barbara still in it! In the mid- ‘80’s Barbara, Don and their three girls, Susan, Cheryl, and Sarah moved to New Jersey as Barb and Don took rotational job assignments at Bellcore in Morristown.  Barbara picked up a Scout Mother role right away and took Sarah’s troop camping.  She’d lent out her camping gear while Susan and Cheryl were scouting in Indy and brushed it off for another fun season with Sarah in New Jersey.  Barbara was THE mom who knew how to camp and cook for the crowds and Sarah can tell great stories of that first outdoor camping adventure ever for all the other girls and moms in the troop.  So funny!!  Barbara also had a secret job assignment while working for Bellcore in the Washington DC area for which she needed top security clearance, and all the neighbors back in Indy took time to make a long-distance call to ask why the secret service had come asking questions about the whole family.  She was sworn to secrecy and couldn’t exactly tell us why, but we know she had something to do with National Emergency Preparedness.  She did in fact write the book on the subject then, and another one a few years later.  The newer one is called “Handbook of Next-Generation Emergency Services.”  We think she should have also written one about the challenges as a working woman in the corporate life in the late 20th century, especially the part about when the DC folks asked her to live in the bunker with the President and others should the nukes fall and the world needed smart people to rebuild the planet.  She said “no” when they said she couldn’t take her family with her. The late ‘80’s brought them to Illinois.  Family and friends visited from far and wide for many years to their home, especially for holidays.  Barbara was crowned the “Queen of Thanksgiving” after consecutive decades of hosting for crowds of family and friends.  Photo available of this momentous occasion. Don and Barbara retired from Ameritech in the ‘90’s and ventured off to Colorado where Barbara was invited to a new role as Senior Vice President of ICG Telecom.  What brought them back to Illinois?  Grandchildren of course! Barbara enjoyed her children and grandchildren immensely, traveling to sporting events, scout events, musical performances, and recognition events.  She also loved reading books to them and to her friends, as she was a member of multiple book clubs, jazzercise coffee clubs, Village volunteer work for Barrington Hills, and more in the Barrington area in her semi-retirement.  Barbara never really stopped working, owning multiple businesses to the end, and we laughed at her work-from-above when somehow all the plans we were making for her final arrangements that were experiencing multiple roadblocks due to Easter holidays suddenly worked into place just as the family had hoped. Barbara is survived by her husband of 55 years, Donald; children, Susan (Patrick) Kenny, Cheryl (Chris) Hagen, and Sarah (Roberto) Brenes; grandchildren, Sean and Ryan Kenny, Connor and Ciara Hagen, Juliana Miller, and Natalia Brenes; siblings, Janet (David) Embler, Mark (Jeannie) Grote, Dennis (Beth) Grote, Rachael (Michael) Reddick, Kathy (late Rex) Lawrence, and David (Dar) Grote; sister in law, Luz Grote, her brother-in-law Jim (Deanna) Kemp, sisters-in-law Kathy (Jim) Smith and Patty (late David) Ooley, and many nieces, nephews, and dear cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Al Grote. Visitation is 4-7pm, Sunday April 10 at St. Anne Catholic Church, 120 N. Ela Street, Barrington.  A second visitation is Monday, April 11 at the church beginning at 10am until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11am.  Burial to follow.

Tracy Lynn Koch - January 13, 1981 - March 27, 2022

Departed: 03/27/2022 (Barrington)
Obituary Preview: Tracy Lynn Koch, 41, of Rockford, formerly of Barrington, passed away peacefully at home with her loving family, friends and furry companion by her side on March 27, 2022. She was born on January 13, 1981 in Barrington, IL to Donald and Kim Koch.
Tracy worked for many years as an insurance adjuster; she found great joy and rewards in this field, where she got to travel all across the United States and bring her beloved rescue dog, Boo, with her to work.
Tracy was an avid concert goer and lover of music, especially Blake Shelton. Her greatest joys were attending his shows (always managing a way to be front row, center) and attending the meet & greets before and after the show.
Tracy was a strong, independent woman who never complained about her situation; rather, she cared deeply for others and wanted them to be happy. She always said exactly what was on her mind and you never had to guess what she was thinking or how she felt. She was the definition of a “Bad-ass warrior” and “Just do it”.
When Tracy did settle down she purchased a home in Rockford. She worked hard for it and was incredibly proud of her home, her truck and especially her beautiful garden.
She leaves a huge hole in the hearts of her family and friends who were always entertained by her stories and hilarious sense of humor – especially her epic prank phone calls. She truly brought life to the party.
Tracy is survived by her parents; her brother, Adam Koch; her fur-baby, Boo; and by many loving friends.
Visitation will be Sunday, April 10, 2022 from 11 AM until the Celebration of Life service at 2 PM at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 149 W. Main Street (Lake-Cook Rd) Barrington, IL 60010. Interment will be private.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements, memorial services, and other details. They can also be a therapeutic outlet for grieving families to share their loved one's story and celebrate their life.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The author should have intimate knowledge of the deceased's life and be able to capture their personality, accomplishments, and spirit.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also include funeral service details, memorial contributions, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise yet meaningful, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Some online platforms may allow for longer or more detailed obituaries.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. They may require specific formatting, word count, or deadlines for publication. Be prepared to provide all necessary information and payment for the obituary.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for print publications. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to control their narrative and ensure accuracy. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and legacy.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and is often longer and more narrative-driven.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries to access microfilm records. Many online platforms also offer searchable databases of historical obituaries. Additionally, you can try contacting local genealogical societies or historical organizations for assistance.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online platforms may allow for corrections or updates within a certain timeframe.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the person's passing or want to limit access to the obituary, you can opt for a private or password-protected online posting. Alternatively, you can choose not to publish an obituary at all.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate the person's personality and bring comfort to those reading the obituary. Just be sure to maintain respect and tact when incorporating humor.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. Be prepared to provide proof of the error and any necessary corrections.

Can I republish an obituary on social media or my personal website?

Check with the original publication or platform for permission before republishing an obituary elsewhere. You may need to obtain copyright clearance or provide proper attribution.

What is the purpose of an online guestbook?

An online guestbook allows friends and family to leave condolences, share memories, and pay tribute to the deceased. This can be a comforting way for mourners to express themselves and connect with others who are grieving.

How long does it take for an online obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an online obituary varies depending on the platform and submission process. Some sites may publish immediately upon submission, while others may take several hours or days for review and approval.

Can I create a memorial website instead of an obituary?

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief?

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including this information in the obituary allows mourners to make donations in memory of the deceased instead of sending flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor their legacy.

How do I notify out-of-town relatives and friends about an upcoming funeral?

What if I want to plan ahead for my own funeral arrangements?
