Beth’s sense of humor and big heart extended beyond her family to the many friends from high school, military bases, and the school district. She was always willing to help anyone, anytime, anywhere, and she loved to bake cookies for many occasions or no occasion at all. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The author should be someone who knew the person well and can provide an accurate and heartfelt tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charity donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or private memorials.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides a fuller picture of the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online platforms may allow you to edit or update the notice after publication.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the passing of your loved one, you can opt for a private obituary or memorial page on certain online platforms. These platforms often offer password-protected or invitation-only access.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber or serious. Including humorous stories or personality traits can help capture the essence of the person and make the tribute more engaging and relatable.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. They may issue a revised version or publish a correction notice.
