Donald 'Don' Leroy Eckert - May 13, 1931 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Lafayette)
Obituary Preview: Donald ‘Don’ Leroy Eckert, 92, died Monday, April 15, 2024, at the Sunrise Assisted Living community in Westminster, Colorado. Don was born May 13,1931 in Lamar, Colorado, a son of the late Ethel M. (Burchett) Eckert and Sherman A. Eckert. He graduated from Lamar High School in 1949 and attended Lamar Junior College and, briefly, the University of Colorado. In 1951 Don enlisted in the United States Navy, completed basic training in San Diego, CA., and trained to become a Navy Hospital Corpsman. As a Navy Corpsman attached to the Marine Corps, Don was deployed to serve in the Korean War conflict. Upon return to the US, Don completed his service at Walter Reed National Military Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland where he met the love of his life, Dorothy ‘Dottie’ L Hill who was completing her nurses training there.
Don and Dottie were set up on a blind date. Dottie was dating someone else at the time, but when she met ‘Donnie’, that was it! Love at first sight, for both. Don would serenade her outside her dorm window, and story has it that there were times he would ‘sneak’ through the window into the dormitory. On June 25,1955 Don and Dottie were married in Elkins, West Virginia, and honeymooned in Niagara Falls, NY. They moved to Lamar, Colorado starting their young family before moving to Boulder, Colorado in 1968. Don was a 20-year employee of Syntex Chemical in Boulder as a warehouse foreman. He retired in 1988.
In addition to providing for his family, Don was extremely active in several community service organizations. He was a Lifetime member of the American Legion Post 10 in Boulder serving as post Commander 1985-1986. He was also a life member of VFW Post 807, also in Boulder, as well as the Forty & Eight Voiture, and the Loyal Order of Moose fraternity.
Don was a dedicated and loyal patriot. Second only to his family was his love of country. A large US flag flies prominently in the front yard of his Boulder home. On May 4, 2014, Don was selected to travel on the Northern Colorado Honor Flight (renamed High Plains Honor Flight in 2019) to Washington DC to visit the monuments and memorials dedicated to service men and women. He was honored and humbled to have been selected. The trip was a highlight of memories and cherished friendships that he spoke of frequently and never forgot. On Memorial Day weekend 2016, Don was the recipient of a Korean Ambassador for Peace medal at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Ft. Collins, Colorado. The medal is an expression of appreciation from the Korean government to American service men and women who served in the Korean War.
Music was also a big part of Don’s life. In high school, he performed the part of Major-General Stanley in the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, ‘The Pirates of Penzance’. He had a lovely tenor voice. No matter where he was, and throughout his life, he was frequently found singing, humming, whistling, or just drumming his fingers as he listened to music. Don had a large library of CDs spanning nearly every genre of music. After Dottie passed, Don would play CDs in the house every morning as he had breakfast and read the Boulder Daily Camera…front to back. After he moved to Sunrise, that ritual continued. After breakfast, he would return to his room and listen to CDs for a couple of hours. It was common for staff and other Sunrise residents to stop as they passed in the hallway to listen along with him.
Fun, yes. Don loved to have a good time. Saturday nights were usually date nights with Dottie, and they would go dancing. He loved dancing with his favorite partner, and he was a good dancer. Don loved to gamble, too. Blackhawk was a favorite destination to play the slots. He was pretty lucky most of the time and rarely walked away having lost money. His winning ways continued after he moved to Sunrise where he was found at the Bingo table at just about every opportunity.
Don was charismatic and people were drawn to him. His smile, infectious and a little bit mischievous. You never quite knew if he was serious or ‘pulling your leg’. He loved to tell stories, and there was ALWAYS a story. When he was still able to drive, it was not uncommon for him to decide to jump in the car, on a ‘whim’, to take a road trip; to West Virginia, Washington State, Washington DC, North Carolina, Virginia…anywhere really. His children finally made him get a cell phone so they could keep track of him. He didn’t think it was necessary because if he wanted you to know where he was, he would have told you!
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Eckert; parents, Ethel and Sherman Eckert; brothers, Clarence Eckert, Norman Eckert, and Charles Eckert; sisters, Edna Francisco, and Velma Stalins; daughter, Victoria Lynn Eckert; and son-in-law Timothy ‘Tim’ Stevens. His memories will be remembered by his family; daughter and son-in-law Sandra and Charles (Sandy and Chuck) Simmons of Dacono, CO; his son Bradley ‘Brad’ Eckert of Boulder, CO, and his daughter Pamela ‘Pam’ Eckert of Boulder, CO; grand-children Brandon Eckert, Jonathan and Carley Simmons, and great grand-child Aubree Eckert.

Elwood K. “Woody” Shelton - December 08, 1928 - March 06, 2024

Departed: 03/06/2024 (Lafayette)
Obituary Preview: Elwood Kessler “Woody” Shelton, 95, passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at his Boulder home with his family by his side.
Woody was born on December 8, 1928, in Richmond, Indiana, to Elwood and Mary Kay Shelton. His father’s job took the family around the midwest, from Indiana, Ohio, and Minnesota; however, upon landing in Colorado, Woody fell in love with the Rocky Mountains.
Woody became a star back for the Denver East football team, eventually leading him to play college ball at Indiana University before transferring to the University of Colorado in 1950. Under coach Dallas Ward, he was the Buffaloes' leading receiver in 1951 and was anticipated to earn All Big Seven honors in 1952 before an injury cut his senior year short. His other achievements on the gridiron included finishing his career with 2,018 all-purpose yards and setting the record for CU’s longest non-scoring passing play, which stood for more than 40 years. Much to coach Ward’s chagrin, Woody also rode bulls in the offseason. He graduated from CU in 1953, was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, and was forever a Buff.
After college, Woody was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves and became a pilot, specializing in helicopters. The bulk of his military career was spent in Panama, in the Canal Zone with the Army Corps of Engineers. Following his military service, Woody attended veterinary school at Colorado State University, graduating in 1963 and leading to a lengthy career as an equine practitioner. He retired from the racetrack in 2000 to start a practice in Summit County, which he ran until his full retirement at the end of 2011 when he was 83.
Woody was a lifelong learner, returning to school in the 1990s to earn a master’s degree in kinesiology. He was an avid skier, pheasant hunter, reader, and outdoorsman. And of course, he loved crossword puzzles—starting every day with the one in the newspaper.

He is survived by his children from his first marriage, Mike (Ginny), Mark, Maureen, and from his second marriage Woody (Taylor), his grandchildren Michael (Amber), Joseph, Cecil, Vera, and Lucy, and his great-grandchildren Lily, Maddie, Khloe Ann, and Landon.

Fondly known as Tor, he was a bright soul who touched the lives of everyone he met. Torin was very generous to his family and friends, always willing to help anywhere he could. He was our "Mr. Fix It", constantly building and fixing just about anything. His mechanical abilities became evident from an early age as he enjoyed working on remote controlled cars, lawn mowers, and dirt bikes. As an adult he pursued a career as a small engine and auto mechanic. He especially enjoyed working on vehicles, from cars to motorcycles or anything that had a motor. His passion for fixing things with motors was unmatched, and he could spend hours tinkering and troubleshooting until he brought them back to life.
Torin was born on May 21, 1988, in Boulder, Colorado, and grew up in the Lafayette and Erie area. He attended St. Louis Catholic School, Centaurus and Peak to Peak high schools, and attended classes at Front Range Community College.
In his free time Torin enjoyed hiking the Colorado Mountains, and fishing the nearby waters with his brother, dad, and friends. He had a genuine passion for fast cars, trucks, motorcycles and adventure. He was very proud of his Irish heritage and inherited a wonderful sense of humor. Some of Torin's happiest times were spent with family and friends vacationing in Colorado, Minnesota, and Iowa. He was also a loyal Colorado sports fan and loved watching and attending the games of the Broncos, Avs, and Colorado Rockies.
Torin is survived by his parents, Tim and Mary O'Dea, his sister, Ashleigh O'Dea, and his brother, Kieran O'Dea. He is also survived by his maternal grandmother, Marlene Jean Madison, and paternal grandmother, Frances E. O'Dea, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Henry Lansford - August 24, 1929 - March 02, 2024

Departed: 03/02/2024 (Lafayette)
Obituary Preview: Henry Lansford died at the age of 94 on March 2, 2024, at his home in Boulder, CO.
Henry is survived by his sons, Tyler and Lewis Lansford and their spouses, Douglas Arbuthnot and Heather Marsden, and his grandchildren, Cecile and Hollis Lansford. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Hollis Lansford Sr. and Minnie Coleman Lansford (née Mobberly); also his younger sister, Laura Jordan, and his wife, Neville Lansford.
Henry Hollis Lansford Jr. was born in Purvis, Mississippi, on August 24, 1929, and was raised in nearby Laurel. Henry graduated from George S. Gardiner High School in 1946. When the Korean War broke out in 1950, he was drafted into the army. After basic training at Fort Chaffee, AK, Henry was sent to Officer Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, VA; there he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Army Corps of Engineers. He shipped out to Korea late in the autumn of 1952, serving as a supply officer with the 882nd Engineering Aviation Battalion until the end of the war in the spring of the following year. In 1954 Henry enrolled at Tulane University, graduating with a B.A. degree in English literature.
On August 26, 1958, Henry married Neville Harris, who was to be his devoted spouse for 64 years. Later that summer, the newlyweds moved to Hattiesburg, MS, where Henry began graduate studies at the University of Southern Mississippi; there he earned an M.A. degree in English literature. Two years later the couple relocated to Oak Ridge, TN, where Henry worked for the Atomic Energy Commission as a technical editor, and where Tyler and Lewis were born. In 1965, Henry took employment with the recently founded National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO. In 1967 Henry and Neville moved into a new house in South Boulder, where they raised their sons and shared 55 happy years.
Henry served as Public Relations Officer at NCAR from 1965 to 1978. His subsequent professional activity was multifarious: his business card advertised his expertise in Writing, Consulting, Photography – and indeed he excelled in all three domains. But when asked by a new acquaintance to explain his work, he would invariably say that his special skill lay in the ability to organize and interpret information produced by scientists in such a way that policy-makers, legislators, and engaged citizens could grasp the practical consequences of the research for the world we share. He was especially proud of the work he did on projects that sounded an early alarm on the threat of climate change.
Henry was a generous and active congregant of the Boulder Valley Church of Christ from 1965 until the COVID-19 pandemic and old age supervened. He died gently in his sleep attended by his family and Grace Kramer, his beloved caregiver.
A memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 12, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Darrell Howe Mortuary, 1701 W. South Boulder Road, Lafayette, CO. At noon, family members and friends will have the opportunity to share reminiscences of Henry and his life.

Beverly loved God, the Sunday crossword puzzles, the Broncos (since 1968!), the Colorado lottery, Elvis, her little dogs (Stacie, Ellie, Lucy, Abby, and Niko), walks around Waneka Lake, gardening and plants, reading, crochet, cooking, video games, and spending time with family.
