Born in Poughkeepsie, NY on September 18, 1929 she was the daughter of Anatole Kolodny, M.D. and Ellen Plass Kolodny of New York City and Rhinebeck, NY.
A graduate of the Horace Mann-Lincoln School and Finch Junior College in NYC, she attended Columbia University and Juilliard School of Music and became an accomplished pianist. Olga graduated from SUNY New Paltz with a Bachelor’s degree in Education and Journalism.
She composed articles for several newspapers and publications across the country.  She was also Editor of the Awa Lau Wahine, a military magazine for Naval and Marine Corps wives in Oahu, Hawaii, where she was stationed with her first husband, Marine Corps Lt. Col. O. W. van den Berg Jr. (predeceased).   She authored several books well into her 80’s and was actively working on a series of Odes she planned to publish.
Olga was a sixth-grade teacher at the Chambers Elementary School in Kingston, NY for 18 years and then changed careers to serve as Director & President of Valeur Mansion Corporation (Valeur) in Rhinebeck, NY, for 17 years.  During her tenure with Valeur, she was instrumental in organizing the restoration of the historic mansion, once home to Alice Astor and Serge Obolensky.  The former Astor estate, named “Marienruh” was where she devoted her efforts promoting the site for public and private social events, business gatherings, conferences, and fundraising benefits.  During that time, she became the owner of Valeur Mansion Catering, Inc. and in parallel, became Administrator of Valeur-Jensen LLC. which managed several rental properties in the area.
Olga remarried in 1981 to Mr. Keith Spencer Jeffery of Devon, England (predeceased).  Their marriage was highlighted by travel and exploration of England to visit extended family, friends, and take in the history and landscape of the English countryside.
Throughout her life, Olga traveled extensively, loved people, and was an engaged and articulate woman.  She was passionate about history and a host of social and political issues.  Following her retirement from Valeur, she filled her time supporting and participating in several regional organizations and groups.  These included being a member of the DAR Livingston Chapter, Hudson River Heritage, Rhinebeck Historical Society, and most recently the local organization, Rhinebeck at Home.
As mobility issues limited her travel, through encouragement by members of Rhinebeck at Home, she would frequently host teas for small groups to engage in conversations on a variety of topics.  Her front door continuously revolved with friends, business associates, and acquaintances that would regularly pop in for a visit to catch up, discuss current events or reminisce about the past.  She was blessed with the gift of storytelling and would regularly share experiences of her life and travels that would hold listeners spell bound.  She held strong political views and was outraged at the current state of the world.  She felt and expressed profound compassion for those searching for a safer place to live and obtain a better quality of life.
Olga’s last years were enriched by the compassion of her friend and caregiver Candace “Candy” Benson.  They would cruise the back roads of the Hudson Valley visiting places steeped with memories and local history.  They even embarked on a long road trip to visit family in Virginia.
Survivors include three daughters, Ellen van den Berg (Paul) Siebold of Rhinebeck, NY; Marcia van den Berg (William) Connell of Lynchburg, VA; and Dr. Margaret Valeur-Jensen of DelMar, CA.  Three step-children: Mark, Julia and Giles Jeffery reside in England.

Wayne A. Brandes Sr. - January 21, 1945 - March 06, 2022

Departed: 03/06/2022 (Rhinebeck)
Obituary Preview: Wayne Andrew Brandes, 77, of Rhinebeck, NY passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, March 6, 2022.
Wayne was born in Queens, NY, on January 21, 1945.  He was the son of the late John and Lillian (Hebert) Brandes of New York, NY and Ste. Agathe, ME, respectively.  He was one of five siblings, including the late John Brandes, the late Lorraine Kremenick, the late Kenneth N. Brandes, and Elaine DelBene.
Wayne attended Thomas A. Edison Vocational and Technical School in Queens, NY.  After earning his GED, he worked in NYC as an ice cream truck driver and taxi driver.  He knew the city streets like the back of his hand, and this is undoubtedly why.
Wayne enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on October 23, 1963 at the age of eighteen.  He told stories of his boot camp experiences at Camps LeJeune (NC, 1963) and DelMar (CA, 1963), as well as his time in The Marine Security Guard School (VA, 1964-67) with great pride and deep emotion. These years were so impressionable on him that he recalled such detail in these memories as if it were yesterday.  Anyone who was lucky enough to hear these stories likely learned a thing or two that they could carry with them throughout their own lives.
His Military Occupational Specialty as an Aircraft Mechanic equipped Wayne with the knowledge and skills he had to fix anything; knowledge and skills that he proudly and lovingly passed on to his children and grandchildren as his “little helpers.”  On August 6th, 1965, Wayne was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was soon stationed in Italy, serving as a Marine Corps Security Guard at the United States Embassy in Rome.  He was honorably discharged on October 22, 1967.  Wayne prided himself on being a Marine. “Once a Marine, always a Marine.” he would say.  And it was true.  He lived his whole life by the three core values of the Marine Corps: Honor, Courage and Commitment.
Wayne was a 52 year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.  From 1978-1995 he worked as an electrician with Local Union #3 for many companies, most notably Fischbach & Moore.  He was Foreman or General Foreman on numerous job sites across New York City, such as Columbia University, Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, New York Transit Authority, and the World Trade Center.  One of his proudest accomplishments was the installation of the electronic toll collection system for Amtech and TBTA, aka, EZ-PASS.
Wayne was a well-known resident of Rhinebeck.  If he wasn’t at home tinkering or tending to his fruit trees, he could likely be found at Williams Lumber or Pete’s Famous Diner.  He was a beloved member of the Sepasco Village Community for over 43 years.  He spearheaded many of the beautification projects of the lake and served on the Sepasco Village Board for many years.  He was an outgoing and dependable neighbor, always willing to lend a helping hand.  He was everyone’s go to guy for anything that needed fixing.  He will be deeply missed in the community.
Wayne’s second home was Ste. Agathe, ME, where he spent his summers as a child and where his many Hebert family members reside.  Wayne was never happier than when he was fishing on Long Lake, in summer or winter, and spending time with his beloved cousins.
Wayne’s bright smile was one of a kind.  That, and his playful personality will be remembered fondly by all. Those who knew Wayne knew he delighted in his garden, had a fervent love of Elvis and a passion for his purple hot rods.  He was a colorful storyteller and an electric dancer.  But perhaps his most defining characteristic was his big heart and how much he loved his family.  He was an amazing father and an even greater Pop-Pop to his twelve grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
Wayne is survived by Eileen Brandes Meinsen of Rhinebeck; his five children, Kenneth Brandes and his wife Paula of Old Greenwich, CT, Wayne Brandes, Jr. and his wife Aimee of Port St. Lucie, FL, Brett Brandes and his wife Jennifer of Red Hook, NY, Deva Lapatas and her husband Panos of Derby, CT, and Jan Rita Rexhouse and her fiancé Peter of Rhinebeck, NY; and his dear grandchildren Audrey, Devin, Grace, Vance, Violet, Vynn-Vegas, Lillian, Alexandra, Leandros, Ethan, Jackson and Hudson as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Memorial calling hours will be held at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., on Saturday, April 2 from 10 AM to 2 PM.
A graveside service will be held at the Rhinebeck Cemetery with services by Fr. Crawford of Good Shepherd Church, the American Legion Post #429, and the Marine Corps Honor Guard following Memorial Hours.
Memorial donations in honor of Wayne can be made to The Arbor Day Foundation.  This link will take you to “Trees in Memory” where you can have trees planted in his honor. https://shop.arborday.org/trees-in-memory

Dr. Robert H. Sagerman - January 23, 1930 - February 01, 2022

Departed: 02/01/2022 (Rhinebeck)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Robert H. Sagerman, a pioneering physician in the creation of modern radiation oncology, died on February 1, 2022 in Rhinebeck, NY. He is survived by his wife, Malyne; his children Jason (Rachel), Eric (Jane), Evan (Marci), and Roger (Abigail); and his grandchildren Lia (Nick), Alison, Owen, Aiden, and Piper. Dr. Sagerman (Bob to his family and friends) was born on January 23, 1930, in Brooklyn, NY, to Irving and Ethel Sagerman. He was joined by a younger brother, Arthur, in 1934. Dr. Sagerman graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School 1947, New York University in 1951, and finally, hoping to become a physician like his father, New York University Medical School in 1955. He married Malyne Barnett in 1954, who for the next 67 years would be the central and most important person in his life. After medical school, Dr. Sagerman worked at Meadowbrook Hospital in Long Island during the final polio epidemic, after which he went to Charity Hospital in New Orleans where he trained as a radiologist. Drafted into the Air Force during the Korean War, Dr. Sagerman was stationed at the 5040th US Air Force Hospital at Ladd Air Force Base in the Alaska Territory, where he was the northern-most radiologist in the Western Hemisphere. While stationed in Fairbanks, Bob and Malyne welcomed their first son, Jason.  After his military service, Dr. Sagerman returned to New York, where he worked at Montefiore Hospital in both diagnostic and therapeutic radiology, during which time he and Malyne welcomed a second son, Eric.  In 1961, they moved to Palo Alto, California, for work at Stanford University Hospital, where Dr. Sagerman trained in the nascent field of radiation therapy, and where a third son, Evan, was welcomed into the fold.  In 1964, Dr. Sagerman returned to NY to work at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, during which time he and Malyne had a fourth son, Roger.  Finally, in 1968, Bob and Malyne moved to Syracuse, NY, where he established a department of radiation therapy at SUNY Upstate Medical Center. Dr. Sagerman served as chairman of that department until 1994. During those years he did research sabbaticals at The Institut Gustave Roussy (France), Stanford University School of Medicine, Hahnemann University School of Medicine, and Loma Linda University Medical Center. As a medical researcher, Dr. Sagerman specialized in tumors of the eye and tumors in children. He wrote the premier textbook on tumors of the eye, and published over 240 peer-reviewed papers. He served on countless medical boards, refereed for numerous medical journals, and collaborated with colleagues across the globe. Working with medicine’s governing bodies, he established training and review programs and protocols for technicians, physicians, and entire departments in the field of radiation oncology. As a teacher Dr. Sagerman trained hundreds of physicians and medical students, and as a physician he treated tens of thousands of patients.  Bob was known to come home from work each day, put down his briefcase, and wrestle on the floor with his four boys before dinner. This continued until 1993, when he broke his daughter-in-law's couch while wrestling his sons before Thanksgiving dinner.  Bob loved opera (although he could not sing a note), sailing (although he was once lost overboard), skiing (where he was known for his distinctive crouch), and good food (well, any food, really). He was intelligent, capable, hardworking, and modest.  He steadily and unfailingly earned the love of his family and friends, the respect of his colleagues, and the gratitude of his patients. When asked how he could work in a field as depressing as cancer treatment, Dr. Sagerman replied “You have to understand—the majority of my patients get better. Of those that I can't cure, I can add significant and meaningful years to their lives. I know what my patients’ prognoses are 95% of the time when I first meet with them. It’s only a small percentage of patients where I’m truly surprised—sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Overall, I feel like I add a lot of hope to the world."
His friends and family agree.

Her children and grandchildren are continuing to advance the spark of learning according to the example she set.
