Departed: 03/29/2024 (Boonton)
Obituary Preview: Lucille L. Scerbo
Lucille L Scerbo died, as she hoped, at the home she came to as a bride in April 1951. Born in November of 1927, she was the seventh child of Charles F. and Catherine Julia (Dunn) Hopkins. Except for her first two years in Jersey City, Boonton was her Home Town.
Lucille was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish - as a Catholic Daughter, Rosary Society member, Eucharistic Minister and Teacher of Fourth Grade, Catechism and Gym. She was a Girl Scout Leader and a fundraiser for various causes. Cille was the supportive wife of Al Scerbo, who was involved in Boonton and Morris County politics over a thirty year span. Some of the best memories (and there were many) of that time included the Boonton Centennial in 1967 when Al was Mayor. Their pride of town and love of community, always a huge part of their lives, was especially evident.
Cille had an uninhibited laugh and was always ready to encourage everyone to have a good time (there is even a photo of her standing on a table dressed for a party, doing just that.) She had “fans” among multiple generations.
Lucille was predeceased by her husband Alfonse and daughter Anni, all seven of her siblings and their spouses, and her Scerbo in-laws with the exception of Louise Carter who now lives in Florida. Arthur Lloyd Charlton - June 27, 1927 - March 17, 2024

Departed: 03/17/2024 (Boonton)
Obituary Preview: A. Lloyd Charlton
Arthur Lloyd Charlton, 96, a longtime Boonton resident known for his community involvement, his friendly smile and his sense of humor, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2024. After a lifetime of service, his second act included taking up the trumpet at 80, tap-dancing at his 90th birthday party, and reaching the goal of visiting all 50 states.
Born June 27, 1927, to Frank and Virginia (Salmon) Charlton in the West Main Street house that his father helped build, Lloyd, as he was known, grew up in Boonton during the Great Depression and World War II era. Among his most memorable times were four summers spent at a family farm near Phillips, ME, where he worked, climbed mountains, bathed in a frigid river, and fixed up a broken-down Model T with his younger brother. Lloyd also became an avid photographer; throughout his life he was seldom without his camera. He joined Boy Scout Troop 1, served as a Civil Defense Air Raid Warden as a teen, graduated from Boonton High School just before his 17th birthday, and worked full time as a mailman before being drafted into the Army in the closing days of the war. He served from 1945 to 1947, attaining the rank of Technician Fourth Grade while in Korea.
Lloyd attended Tufts College (now University) in Medford, MA, on the G.I. Bill. He played on the freshman football team (and forevermore could recite the results of all its games, usually lopsided defeats), pledged Delta Upsilon, and graduated in the college’s “Centennial Class” of 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. He remained a devoted “Jumbo” who often returned for Homecoming and reunions. He last journeyed to “the Hill” in September 2023 for a football game, where he enjoyed meeting the coaches and watching his beloved alma mater prevail, 28-10.
After college, Lloyd tested products at Consumers’ Research in Washington, NJ, America’s oldest consumer protection organization, where a young lady in the mailroom caught his eye. After pursuing her for several years, he and Antoinette “Ann” Pulsinelli were married on June 9, 1956. They would enjoy 36 years together and raise three children before her death in 1993 after a long illness.
With a growing family in the late 1950s, Lloyd left the product testing field to once again work for Uncle Sam, first at the Atomic Energy Commission in New York City, and then for the bulk of his career at the Army's research base at Picatinny Arsenal, Dover, NJ. Post-retirement, he helped out at local stores including Boonton Photo, and at age 83 worked as a Census Taker for the 2010 U.S. Census.
Community service was the hallmark of Lloyd’s life. He was named Boonton's Citizen of the Year in 2007; two years later he was honored as the Boonton - Mountain Lakes YMCA Citizen of the Year.
He is perhaps best known for his 60+ years of involvement in the Boy Scouts of America; generations of Boonton boys learned outdoor skills and citizenship from him. Twice he was Scoutmaster of Troop 2 totaling 15 years, starting in the 1950s and again in the 1970s. He was Chairman of the Boonton District BSA Camping Committee for 20 years, a founding committee member of Cub Scout Pack 201, and “Mayor” for many years of a Klondike Derby “town” where Scouts tested their skills in winter competition. In 1974 he received the Silver Beaver award for distinguished and noteworthy service, the highest honor bestowed at the Council level; he also received the District Award of Merit.
Lloyd was elected to the Boonton Board of Education in 1965 and served for nine years. He was a life member of the Boonton High School Alumni Association; a life member and former trustee of the Boonton Historical Society, who led walking tours of Main Street until he was 94; a member and former trustee of the Salmon Family Association; and a member of the Rockaway Valley Garden Club. A Rotary Club member and chapter president in 2005, he received the Paul Harris Fellow Award in 2006. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels, coached Little League teams, and at age 78 drove solo to the Gulf Coast where he helped rebuild homes after Hurricane Katrina.
A lifelong member at the First Presbyterian Church of Boonton, Lloyd served as elder, deacon and member of the "Presbyaires" singing group that entertained at nursing homes and senior centers. It was while singing (as best he could, but always enthusiastically) with the Presbyaires that the widowed Lloyd met and fell in love with Theresa (Prunier) Crespo, and they married on Nov. 18, 2000. Together, Lloyd and Terry enjoyed many adventures – he introduced the city girl to camping, and they journeyed domestically and abroad – that were always filled with laughter.
Lloyd and Terry began to record oral histories of local residents, then turned them into books, co-writing and self-publishing four books about Boonton in the first half of the 20th century. Copies were donated to the Holmes Library, local schools, the Morris County Library and Rutgers University, and were placed in a time capsule celebrating the town's 150th birthday to be opened in 2117.
Always willing to help with a project, Lloyd also made time to attend all the school concerts, plays and sports events of his children and then his grandchildren. And he was notorious for dropping in on old friends, including some he hadn’t seen in decades, usually bearing copies of photos he had taken of them.
In addition to his wife, Terry, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Nancy A. Charlton Questa (Angelo), William B. Charlton (Adrienne) and Arthur L. Charlton, Jr. (Susan); and step-children Carol Crespo (Lee Harris), James Crespo, Ray Crespo (Rebekah), and Joseph Crespo (Kay Thayer). He was the cherished grandfather of Anthony Questa, Nicholas Questa (Alexandra), John, Joshua, Bridget, and Jacqueline Charlton, and Jackson Crespo; and great-grandfather of Angelo “RayRay” and Nicholas “Nicky” Questa. He also is survived by his brother, John “Jack” Charlton (Barbara), four cousins, numerous nieces and nephews, and dear friends. In addition to his parents and first wife, he was predeceased by his sister, Alice Heaton. He also leaves numerous boxes of photographs, many rocks collected from around the world, and a treasure trove of memories.
Family and friends are welcome to visit on Friday, March 22, from 4-8 p.m. in the Dangler Lewis & Carey Funeral Home, 312 W. Main St., Boonton. The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church of Boonton, 513 Birch St., with interment to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Boonton.

George Charles Gergulas - November 14, 1929 - January 26, 2024

Departed: 01/26/2024 (Boonton)
Obituary Preview: George Charles Gergulas, 94, was called Home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 24, 2024. George was born November 14, 1929, in Orange, NJ, to Charles and Estelle Gergulas, who were Greek immigrants. The youngest of their three sons, he graduated from Central High School in Newark, and then worked as a machinist’s apprentice for Westinghouse in Bloomfield. From 1950-1954, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, given Q clearance while working stateside on the atomic bomb. It was during this time that he came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior, and the following Scripture verse shaped his life for the rest of his days: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
After his military service, George attended Barrington College in Rhode Island, graduating with a degree in history; upon graduation, he returned briefly to Westinghouse. A few years later, he began his career working for the Union County Public School system as a high school industrial arts teacher, and retired in 1993 after 30 years there.
George married his dear wife Elsie (Heintz) in August 1966, and shortly thereafter, moved to their home in Stirling where they raised their family. Many happy memories were made in this home; it was from here that Elsie was called home to Heaven in 2017, and where George lived for a total of 55 years. After an illness last spring, he recovered in the home of his daughter Marilyn, her husband Courtney, and their children, which was a time cherished by them all. In July 2023, he relocated to Victoria Mews Assisted Living in Boonton; he thrived in this new community, seeking to be a friend to others and also leading a weekly Bible study while his strength allowed.
George enjoyed reading and studying his Bible, spending hours taking notes and delving deeply into God's Word; praying faithfully through the many prayer lists he kept; traveling extensively across the continental USA numerous times with his family; and creating a variety of projects at his school and at home. He was a skilled woodworker and machinist and spent a long stretch of his retirement years volunteering at the Veterans Affairs Hospital wood-shop in Basking Ridge. Blessed is the man.... whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper. ~ from Psalm 1

Denise was a resident of Boonton, NJ since 1999 with her husband Bob and their Maltese, Dooley. It was a second marriage for both, and they were life partners for 32 years. Denise had been hospitalized seven times in the last seven months of her life, and on 4 January 2024, she had a heart-to-heart conversation with her Creator and decided it was finally time to return Home. Denise peacefully transitioned shortly after seeing both her children and Bob’s children at her bedside, after a brief stay in hospice at Saint Clare’s Hospital in Denville, NJ.

She returned to the workplace in a new career in sales, customer service and merchandising for Walpole Woodworkers for 9 years.
While the birth of her two children were among her most cherished moments in life, Denise was present at the home birth of her granddaughter Meadow, which proved to be her most profound experience, cementing the bond grandmother and granddaughter had for the rest of Denise’s life. The bravery her daughter demonstrated during natural childbirth was duplicated in Denise’s dealing with debilitating disease.
Denise was raised Episcopalian and studied spiritual development in her early 40s. Denise and Bob attended many classes at the Metaphysics Center of New Jersey and the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY. She traveled to Sedona, AZ twice, first with her daughter Tracy and years later with her husband Bob.

Alfred Stephen Tarsitano - October 06, 1949 - November 19, 2023

Departed: 11/19/2023 (Boonton)
Obituary Preview: Alfred “Al” Tarsitano, 74, of Montville, NJ passed away on November 19th, 2023.
Al grew up in Brooklyn, NY, the oldest in a family of five. He attended Catholic elementary school and Erasmus High School. After graduation, he went to Brooklyn College and CCNY for his mechanical engineering degrees. Al started his career at Bechtel Engineering, and moved on to work for WW Kellogg in Hackensack, NJ, where he met his wife Denise. He ended his career at Covanta Energy in Morristown, NJ after having worked there for over 20 years. Al has always been a hard worker. Although his engineering career began after college, Al had been working since the early age of 11. He worked for both of his uncles, at a gas station and a mechanic shop, often foregoing family summer vacations to work. He put himself through college and graduate school without ever asking for financial help from anyone.
Al was an athlete and enjoyed physical fitness; he even came in second place in his high school’s Presidential Fitness Award competition out of five thousand students. He was an avid skier and traveled to Colorado and Vermont to ski. It was on a work-sponsored ski trip to Lake Placid, that he got to know his future wife Denise after sharing a seat next to her on the bus. Al was a car fanatic, and at different times in his life had a motorcycle, a Fiat, and his prized possession, a baby blue XKE Jaguar. He loved to swim and had many wonderful trips to places such as Greece, the Jersey shore, Bethany Beach, and Hawaii. He was extremely intelligent and gifted in understanding how things worked; there was nothing Al couldn’t build or fix.
Al’s greatest joy in life was his family. After a full day of work, he always had time to play with his children or help with dinner. He took an active role in their lives, coaching soccer and basketball teams and never missing an important event. He made it his mission to create a loving, close-knit family, putting everyone else’s needs before his own. He continued serving as a loving father and mentor to his adult children and wife for his whole life, ceaseless in his devotion to his family. Sunday dinners, daily phone calls, and family vacations were what he loved most. He was overjoyed with the birth of his new grandson and his daughter’s upcoming wedding.
What stood out most to everyone who met Al was his unparalleled character. He lived with grace and dignity and treated everyone he met with patience and kindness. Al always had time to listen or give advice, and was generous with his time, money, and love. He was a true angel on Earth. The greatest test of Al’s character came in the last ten years of his life when he became blind. He never burdened anyone with his disability or complained, in spite of immeasurable obstacles and difficulties. Even while blind, Al stoically managed to continue to support everyone around him and put his own needs last.
Al is survived by his wife Denise, daughter Alexandra, son Stephen, grandson Paul, and siblings, Cathy-Anne, Mary, Annie, and Michael. He was loved dearly and will be so missed by all those who knew him.
Visiting will be held on Friday, November, 24th 2023 from 2:00 to 7:00 PM at Dangler Lewis & Carey Funeral Home, 312 West Main St. in Boonton. Additional parking available across the street at Lakeland Bank and street parking.
