Brian Phillip Butler - October 25, 1974 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (West Orange Township)
Obituary Preview: Brian Butler, 49
Brian Butler, age 49, of Manchester, New Jersey, passed away Saturday morning April 20th, 2024.
Brian was born in Florida and raised in West Orange, attending Our Lady of Lourdes and graduating with the class of ’93 from Seton Hall Prep. He moved on to Essex County Community College and remains very close with many school friends.
Brian was a loving and caring person who would open his heart to friends and family and bend over backwards to help them out. He had a great sense of humor and loved sharing it whenever he could.
Through Brian’s career he wore many hats and embraced whatever opportunity he pursued. Brian really enjoyed his jobs as a bartender, a wireless sales rep and a sales rep for Bil Jac dog foods, but the job that meant the most to him was being a counselor at Frost Valley YMCA in the Catskill mountains of Claryville, New York. He first went to Frost Valley as a camper of 9 years old and returned every summer working with horses, loving nature and fascinated with life in the mountains where he could embrace sunrise, sunset, lightning storms, fresh air and freedom to run and play. When he was too old to be a camper, he had no choice but to become a counselor where he became ‘Super Brian’ and made sure that all of his campers had as much fun as he did every summer. His antics, fun, excitement and creativity were well known and loved by campers and staff. His warm and approachable nature helped his campers to get the most out of their experience. For the rest of his life these would be the days that meant the most to him and the lifelong friends he continues to hold close, laugh and reminisce with.
Brian’s love of adventure would lead him to capture his friends and take off on random road trips. Many stories of them are still told. Brian, himself was a great storyteller and never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
In 2003 he inherited the job of ‘family’ Santa Claus from his dad and accepted it with enthusiasm. The youngest generation in the family was awed by this 6’2” Santa who would bring them presents every Christmas.
In 2021 he moved to Manchester to be a caregiver for his mother, MaryJo.
In 2022 he met his girlfriend Alysia who stood by him and brightened his life while he went through some difficult times with his health. Her love was his strength.
He is survived by his mother, MaryJo Connolly (nee Weisbrot), his brother Jason Connolly, as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, Godparents, Godson and his cat, Indiana.
Friends and family may visit Dangler Funeral Home, 340 Main Street, West Orange on Friday April 26 from 6 to 9 pm. There will be a final viewing Saturday morning April 27th at 9am then leaving at 9:30am for Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 225 Ridgedale Ave, East Hanover. John Douglas Pflug - December 28, 1930 - April 17, 2024

Departed: 04/17/2024 (West Orange Township)
Obituary Preview: Obituary for John D. Pflug Sr.
John Douglas Pflug, Sr, of West Orange, NJ passed away peacefully on April 17, 2024, with family by his side as he transitioned to his heavenly reward. Husband, Son, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Friend, John was a Good Man, the Best of the Best, full of compassion and love.
John was born December 28, 1930, in Orange, NJ to Elizabeth and George Pflug. One of seven children, he graduated from Orange High School and went on to work at a local supermarket in Montclair, where he met the love of his life, Ann Napolitano. After a 2 year, courtship, they were married on April 22, 1951, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Montclair, NJ.
John was soon drafted and inducted into the United States Army, in Feb. 1952. He was commissioned to Fort Sam Houston in Austin, Texas, where he attended training for four months. Later that year, he was deployed to Korea where he served for over a year, achieving numerous commendations, and served as a medic and dental prosthetic technician. While in Korea, John Jr. was born, and it wasn’t until six months later when he met his son for the first time. Upon being honorably discharged in Feb. 1954, at the rank of Corporal, John and Ann moved to West Orange, NJ where their family grew, welcoming their two daughters, Kathleen and Sharon.
John began a career with the Bell Telephone company in 1955. Starting as a lineman, he progressed through the organization to oversee Installation in various offices in New Jersey. After 32 years, he retired in 1987, to start his new career as a “househusband”, where he refined his culinary skills, while Ann continued to work at West Orange Degnan House, for several more years. His favorite pastime and passion was playing golf. He started playing at a young age with his brothers, and in his later years especially enjoyed playing with Ann, or Mom, as he called her, his children and grandson. And when a pro tournament was in town, he and Ann would strategically secure a spot by a green for hours, to watch the players throughout the day. His other passion was the NY Yankees. From Spring Training to seasons’ end, he would not miss a pitch with Ann at his side. He especially loved attending games at the stadium, taking in the excitement, and sampling every cuisine available...a true fan!
John was a craftsman, which was exemplified by his handcrafted Christmas ornaments which were lovingly made and given to family and friends for over 40 years. Most every ornament had a meaning, being tied to a personal or global event in his life that year.
John and Ann were lifelong parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in West Orange, NJ for 70 years, where they could be found in the chapel regularly for daily mass. Very active in the church, they served as Eucharistic ministers and operated the Peace and Good Corner religious gift shop for over 20 years. John was also a founding member of the Holy Name Society chapter at Our Lady of Lourdes and as a Charter Member of the Knights of Columbus achieved the honor of a third-degree.
But most important to John was family and friends. John, Dad, Baba, Great Grandpa, Uncle John, you name it…he was always there. Attending every family gathering, every family event and every ball game and recital for his kids and grandkids…nothing was more important to him, than being with those that he loved. And...His wisdom and compassion made him the go-to guy for his many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and more.
John was predeceased by his parents, grandson John Douglas Pflug, III, grandson-in-law Garrett Gurrieri, siblings, Audrey (Leonard) Krieger, Daniel (Reggie) Pflug, George (Muriel) Pflug, Virginia (Tom) Pizzano, Fred Pflug and Vincent Sorge. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ann, of 73 years, sister Marlene Sorge, sister-in-law Josie Pflug, son John Douglas Pflug, Jr. and wife Kim, Kathy and husband Joe Modica, Sharon and husband Paul Moench, grandchildren Jessica and Alex Patentas, Kristi Pflug, and great grandchildren Yianni and Dimirtri Patentas and Johnathan Chadwick Pflug.
Through good times and bad, John and Ann persevered grounded in their faith in God and family.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations should be directed to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1 Eagle Rock Avenue, West Orange, NJ 07052.

Nick Owen Bowness - September 30, 1940 - February 26, 2024

Departed: 02/26/2024 (West Orange Township)
Obituary Preview: Nicholas Owen Bowness of East Hanover, NJ, passed away on February 26 after a brief but intense battle with ALS.
Born in Carbondale, PA on September 30, 1940 to Oliver and Eunice (Owens) Bowness. Nick is the oldest brother to Barry Bowness and Robert Bowness.
Always one to stay busy, Nick began his occupational career by delivering newspapers as a boy, and setting up pins at the local bowling alley. In his free time, Nick could be found at the baseball field, where he would develop into one of the best ballplayers to come out of Carbondale. Not one for the classroom, after graduating from Carbondale High School, Nick enlisted in the Army Reserves. After receiving his Honarable Discharge in September 1965, Nick continued to work on his baseball development, while working in a shoe factory, followed by a glass factory upon moving to New Jersey.
Nick’s job at the glass factory ended with a fortuitous accident. After burning his leg on the job, Nick landed in the hospital. The nurse in charge of his recovery was Muriel Brannick. They would be married on March 05, 1966, where Muriel would be the perfect opposing personality to Nick’s. She would continue her involvement in the health care industry, while raising their two children, Brian Nicholas Bowness and Christine Bowness Albano.
Nick had two main passions outside of his family: lifting weights and baseball.
He would spend many hours working out at the Orange YMCA. Nick would become close friends with his lifting partner, Gene Mathews. Their friendship would lead to Mathews being named as Godfather to Brian, but also the connection Nick would use to land his first sales job at Borden Foods. He would earn multiple Salesman of the Year Awards before being named a Vice President for the food brokerage Andorn, Bergida, and Danks (ABD Inc).
After wrapping up a baseball career in the Essex County League, that would include facing many big league ball players such as Satchel Paige, and developing relationships with the likes of Yogi Berra; Nick began his coaching career. His first stop: Our Lady of the Valley, where he would help guide the team to a Greater Newark Tournament title, as well as a #1 ranking in the state of New Jersey.
Nick then focused his coaching attention to Brian’s baseball career. Aside from coaching the ball clubs, Nick would also go on to run West Orange’s Mountain Top League, and the town’s travel ball clubs along side his friends Anthony Carlucci and Wendell Phillips. The teams would go on to win multiple championships including a historic 13-0 Colts team in 1983. Nick would also make a point of inviting the players’ parents to take part in team responsibilities which allowed everyone involved to feel like one big family. Many of the players on those ball clubs would call Nick their favorite and most influential coach.
The final stop in Nick’s coaching career was at Seton Hall University, where he was named an Assistant Coach as well as the Strength Coach. Aside from educating the baseball program on strength training, he also helped in the strength development of the University’s basketball team that would go on to reach the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament. It was at SHU where he would develop a life long friendships with Assistant Coach Fred Hopke, and many of the program’s most decorated players such as Mo Vaughn, Craig Biggio, John Valentin, Kevin Morton, and Dana Brown, to name a few.
Sharing in many personality traits, Nick took great pride in watching his daughter Christine out hustle and outwork her peers. While working on her Masters Degree, Christine landed her first teaching job at Oliver Street School in Newark, located just a few blocks from the glass factory Nick worked in many years earlier. But nothing would give Nick more joy than when Christine gave birth to her daughter, Charlotte Mae Albano. Nick would be front and center for Charlotte’s sporting events and activities. Charlotte would also be the reason Nick would come out of coaching retirement to throw her batting practice before her games.
Nick Bowness encapsulates the American Dream. A young man that came from nothing yet created a life filled with tremendous stories and memories. You would be hard-pressed to find someone that can lay claim to out-curling The Incredible Hulk, Lou Ferrigno, being an invited guest in George Steinbrenner’s suite at Yankee Stadium, and also having a random conversation with Kevin Costner outside of Whitney Houston’s funeral. On the surface the stories may seem hard to believe at first. But meeting Nick, you would be immediately captivated by his outgoing personality and charm. Those closest to Nick would make a point to describe his intense loyalty and genuine care for those around him.
