Juanita was born on January 2, 1931, to Joseph Havlina, Sr. and Neva (Edwards) Havlina in Pasco, Wash. and grew up on the family’s farm near Connell, Wash. In 1954, she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from WSU and the St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Spokane, which partnered with the college. Rex and Juanita moved from the Hatton farm to Ritzville in 1960 when they expanded their family farming partnership with Rex’s brother Elwyn, leasing farmland near Marcellus. In addition to fulfilling her responsibilities as a busy farmer’s wife, Juanita worked as a registered nurse at the Ritzville Hospital. After retiring, she served for thirteen years as a member of the Ritzville Hospital Board of Directors.
In 1981, Rex and Juanita moved into the home they built in Ritzville, where Juanita indulged her passion for maintaining her yard and flower gardens. She enjoyed book club meetings with fellow members of the local AAUW, and she treasured her friends from the local Methodist Church. For several years Juanita participated with the Spokane chapter of Healing the Children, at first by hosting a teenage girl brought to the U.S. for surgery, and later as a grant writer. Involvement with this organization included Rex and Juanita taking a round-the-globe trip with other chapter members, visiting branches of the organization serving children abroad needing medical care. Their participation led to them adopting their Korean-born son Tom in 1988.
Rex and Juanita celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2023. Juanita is survived by four children, ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and by her brother, Joseph Havlina, Jr. She was preceded in death by her sister, Gloria Harper, by her beloved husband Rex, recently deceased on March 17, 2024, and by their son Tom, who passed away in 2020.

William Harder Jr - December 16, 1961 - April 01, 2024

Departed: 04/01/2024 (Ritzville)
Obituary Preview: William (Billy/Bill Jr.) George Harder, Jr. died April 1 at the age of 62, in Kahlotus, WA.
Billy was the first child born to Bill Harder, Sr. and Vivian (Hamilton) Harder, on Dec. 16, 1961. He was joined by his brothers Kurt and Eric in 1964 and 1969. The boys were raised on their family’s Kahlotus, WA wheat and cattle ranch, partaking in chores and taking on responsibilities from an early age. Billy proved his toughness in his youth getting bucked off a horse then pitch from a four-wheeler. Never a quitter, he always got right back up and kept going, never complaining.
Billy was the quiet, even-keeled one in the family. If you knew his father and brothers, you know there was no point in competing those volumes. Billy’s quiet strength gave him fortitude and made him resilient, both traits he would draw on for years to come.
Billy attended school in Kahlotus for all 12 years as did many of his classmates, several of whom remained his closest and most cherished friends his entire life.
Billy and his family had many close friends in the Kahlotus community. The adults in their circle of family friends became extended parents to Billy and his brothers just as their children became like extended siblings. The families enjoyed many years and many adventures together including camping trips, Sundays at the river, clam digging trips, and RV adventures.
Billy’s was a close family unit. The family worked together, vacationed together and often argued “together.” It was a true testament to their fondness for one another that they spent their free time together attending Nascar races and Cougar football games, playing Texas Hold 'em or visiting casinos, and vacationing in Mexico together.
Following in his mother’s footsteps, Billy graduated from Washington State University in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics. In particular, he studied and excelled at accounting, a career path suggested to him by one of his Kahlotus high school teachers. And this path served him well as he developed into the Business Manger for his family’s diversified agriculture business.
Billy was also the ‘parts’ guy, constantly dispatched to pick up parts here, there, and without fail back to here again. He took this role seriously, often bringing back 5 of any given item instead of the 1 requested, eating at the best restaurant nearest the parts dealer, and making friends with every vendor along his way. If you’ve spent any time at all on highways between Kahlotus and the Tri Cities or Spokane, surely, you’ll remember seeing Billy zoom by with his proud “WSU 84-Ag” license plates.
After his brothers passed, Billy took a more active role in the operation of the family business; and, following his dad’s passing, became the primary decision maker. He welcomed bringing his nephews and niece into the family business just as his father had welcomed he and his brothers. There were many stories, histories, rituals, habits, and routines to pass on to them and he was so excited to extend the legacy.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Billy was a dedicated man of service. He took pride in his community serving on the Kahlotus School Board and taking his father’s founding commissioner seat for the Port District of Kahlotus.
His was a member of and served terms as Treasurer for the local Lyons Club, the Franklin County Wheat Board, and the Franklin County Cattlemen’s Association. His many years of service also included memberships to the Washington Cattlemen’s Association, National Association of Wheat Growers, Washington Association of Wheat Growers, and Kahlotus City Council.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Bill, Sr. and Vivan, and by his brothers, Kurt and Eric. He is survived by his sister-in-law Terri (Dusty Roller), his niece, Nicole, his nephews, Eric Max (Ally) and TJ; and, Max’s son, Eric Andrew, whom Billy adored. He is also survived by his uncle Clarence Hamilton and Clarence’s wife, Laura, as well as numerous cousins in the extended Hamilton and Harder families.
Please join the family for a memorial service to be held, Friday, April 12 at the Kahlotus Grange Hall at 11 am. A graveside service at the Harder Family Cemetery will immediately follow with a lunch of Billy’s favorite, Longhorn BBQ, after the graveside service at the Kahlotus Grange Hall. Memorial gifts may be made in Billy’s memory to Washington Cattlemen’s Association, PO Box 96, Ellensburg, WA 98926, or Washington Association of Wheat Growers, 109 E. First, Ritzville, WA 99169.

Terry T Janzen - July 15, 1930 - March 27, 2024

Departed: 03/27/2024 (Ritzville)
Obituary Preview: Terry (Terue) Theodora (Grimmesey) Janzen
Terry was born on July 15, 1930 in Tokyo Japan. She lived in Japan until 1939 when she moved to California with her family. Orris R., Satoye, brother Robert, sisters Barbara and Kay Grimmesey.
Terry, her siblings, and her mother Satoye were taken to an internment camp in Poston, AZ during the WWII war. Part of Terry’s legacy throughout her life was her empathic ability to connect with those that were in pain or felt isolated and those early years moving from Japan to the United States formed some of her core beliefs to be kind and compassionate. Terry loved children, art, animals, the study of nature, and formed an early love of books as her father had a large library in their home.
Terry graduated from Chaffey High School in Upland California where she met her future husband, Herbert Janzen. They were married in 1948 in New Mexico.
Terry and Herb were blessed with six children, Ronald, Christina, Deborah (Thomas), Orris (Teresa), Leslie (Carolyn), and Maria. Terry was very active with her children’s activities. She was the Brownie and Girl Scout leader for her daughters and enjoyed planning outdoor learning activities. Terry lost her oldest son Ron in 1984 and her youngest daughter Maria in 2012. She was blessed with twenty grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Terry was a very gifted artist and won awards. She completed hand-drawn portraits of all her children and those beautiful drawings hang on the walls of their homes. Terry loved to garden and was noted for her beautiful flowers and large vegetable gardens. Her yard was featured in the town newspaper one year as an “Outstanding Yard of the Year”. Terry’s interest in soil as a gardener continued through her work testing soil for the farmers at the Adams County Conservation in the 60’s. Later she worked at the Ritzville Grade School as a para-professorial until her retirement in 2000.
Terry enjoyed working with children of all abilities and math and reading were her specialties. She created a large library in her classroom with books that encouraged lifelong readers. During her time at Ritzville Grade School she helped to coordinate, and teach, curriculum for Camp Wooten, an overnight environmental education camp. She hand-drew the sweatshirt design that they still use today (check for the name Janzen under the tree). She passed her love of nature to her granddaughter Michelle who is carrying on her legacy.
Terry cared about making a difference in the community and was very active with the local and state Democratic party. She received a plaque for her thirty years of service as an election observer for Adams County and training new observers.
Terry was also a member for the City of Ritzville Tree Board and was instrumental in adding trees to the landscape in her town. She volunteered at the Burroughs Museum as a docent/tour guide and together with her family created a beautiful rose garden around the gazebo in memory of her grandson Jeromy who died in 2011.
Herb and Terry moved to Cheney Assisted Living in July of 2021 a day before her 91st Birthday. She was welcomed with open arms and found a very happy new home. Herbert passed away in May of 2022, they were married for almost 73 years.
Terry’s love of books continued throughout her life and prompted her to organize a library area by her apartment called “Terry and Friends Library”; she loved to take care of the books and help spread the joy of reading. She made many new friends with residents and staff members. She told us that everyone took good care of her and she sometimes stayed up late with other residents to play late night games.
In November of 2023 she broke her hip and had to be moved to the Nursing Home section of Cheney Care Center. She never completely recovered and missed her beloved Herbert.
Terry’s love of Jesus was always reflected in every aspect of her life and is evident in all she did. She always loved unconditionally all she met.
God called Terry home on March 27, 2024, surrounded by family. We will miss her greatly and also know that she made a positive difference in so many lives and will continue to be a presence in our memories.
If you have any photos, stories, or memories of Mrs. Terry Janzen please send to debibalfe@gmail.com The family will hold a celebration of life ceremony in mid-July.
Donations in her memory can be sent to the Ritzville Museum Volunteer Association or the Ritzville Library.

Robert Russell - September 26, 1946 - February 17, 2024

Departed: 02/17/2024 (Ritzville)
Obituary Preview: Robert C. Russell (Bob) passed away unexpectedly Saturday, February 17th, 2024, at the age of 77, surrounded by his family.
Bob was born to Earl and Irma Russell on September 26, 1946, in Harrison, Arkansas. While primarily growing up in Wichita Kansas, he (and his brother Phil), also spent many summers working on a close relatives’ family farm in Arkansas. He recalled working very hard, getting up well before sunrise, feeding animals, chopping wood and building and painting miles of fence. It wasn’t all work, as they also had adventures causing mischief and spent time at the swimming hole with the local kids.
After graduating high school in 1964, he joined the Air Force in early 1965, just missing being drafted into the Army. Bob completed his basic training, then technical training in Mississippi on the maintenance and repair of various communications equipment, including high powered radar. Upon graduation, the graduates were given two choices of their preferred duty stations. He would say, “of course you picked your home state, but I was friends with a few guys from Washington, so I put that down, and as luck would have it, that’s where I ended up.” In a Veterans Day article published by the Othello Independent, November 5th, 2008, he was quoted as saying "It (Othello) was a desolate, god-forsaken place then, but a good place for a young man to be. I turned 20 here and I am happy with my choice. It changed my life for the better, and I met my wife.” While stationed at “Radar Hill” Air Force radar station in Othello WA, home of the 637th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron (AC&W Sq), he met and later married Deborah Grow in the Summer of 1969. Soon after, they were stationed in Germany, on the border near Czechoslovakia where they lived off base, enjoyed many biergarten festivals and welcomed Tiffany to the family in December 1970.
Following his two Air Force enlistments, and honorable discharge in 1972, they returned to Othello where he began work on the Milwaukie Railroad. In early November 1973, the couple welcome their son Rob to the family. Bob would later work for the Burlington Northern Railroad, and finally the Washington Central Railroad before switching careers.
In 1990, Bob retired from the railroad and began working at the local building supply, where he gained many professional and personal friendships and watched as the community expanded, often saying, “I sold all the materials for that entire neighborhood” as he talked of the changes around town. He was a current member of the Adams County Planning Commission, serving many years, and enjoyed being involved in the community’s development.
In 2013, he retired and devoted his time to numerous hobbies including woodworking, Corvettes and car shows, music, Bingers coffee club, and as he would say, “living the dream”. He loved scroll sawing intricate ornaments, name signs, firefighter plaques, puzzles and creating beautiful wood cutting boards among other projects. Bob and Deb were active members of numerous Corvette clubs over the years and would regularly attend meetings from the Tri-Cities to Wenatchee and most recently Spokane, many times attending events several times a month. Together they took several cross-country caravan trips to Bowling Green, Kentucky, Corvette headquarters, and attended countless car show events each year throughout the Pacific Northwest, including Montana and Canada, making many friends. He proudly volunteered his time whenever possible for veteran’s groups on projects such as Christmas bike giveaways, senior utility payment programs, as well as simply driving friends and acquaintances to doctor’s appointments to Spokane and the Tri-Cities, as often as they needed help.
Bob loved the outdoors, occasionally hunting, however, more often these were family outings. Most weekends were spent boating at O’Sullivan, weekend long trips riding three-wheelers at the Moses Lake sand dunes with brief ER side trips to fix the various incidental mishaps, or winter camping and snowmobiling in the Cascades, filled with family, music and campfires. He was the definition of the weekend warrior and would get up Monday morning and do it all again the next weekend.
Bob loved watching Gonzaga basketball (college basketball in general), and would watch countless games each season, but he always rooted for his Kansas teams. He was a fiercely local husband, involved parent and grandparent and was wildly proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. You will be truly missed by your family and community.
He is proceeded in death by his father Earl, mother Irma (2005), and brother Phil (2019). He is survived by his wife Deb (54 years of marriage), siblings Stan Russell, Rose Casey, Beth Cox, and Greg Russell, daughter Tiffany (Gary) Lebacken, son Rob (Tara) Russell, grandchildren Mandy (Robert) Langstaff,Derek (Kassilin)Lebacken, Gary Michael (Hannah)Lebacken, Jenna Russell (Kolby Snyder), Jacob (Emily Torpey)Russell and five great-grandchildren Riah, Liam, Paislee, Easton and Karson.
A private family service will be held, and a Celebration of Life is being planned for June.

Departed: 02/08/2024 (Ritzville)
Obituary Preview: DOB 06/13/1935 DOD 02/08/2024 Written and provided by the family
Beloved mother and long-time Othello resident, Dorothy Louise (Magoteaux) Klingeman peacefully passed away on February 8, 2024, at Coventry House Assisted Living at the age of 88.
Dorothy was born on June 13, 1935, in Butler County, PA, to Earl Raymond “Ray” Logan and Grace Lenore (Brown) Logan. She lived in Meridian, PA, and had many fond memories with her parents, brother Jim, Uncle Chappy & Aunt Lillian. When Dorothy was 13, her dad accepted a management position with Potlatch Lumber Company and moved to Ritzville, WA. Dorothy graduated from Ritzville High School in 1953 then attended Washington State College (WSU) for 2 years studying business. After college, she accepted a position at Larson Air Force Base in Moses Lake, WA working for the bomber's legal office where she met Reginald Allard. They were married in 1956 through 1970 and had six children.
In 1973, Dorothy married John Magoteaux with 4 children. With 10 children, the house was always active with family and friends and was the center for gatherings. Dinners were a large affair that always included an extra mouth or two. During their marriage, Dorothy and John enjoyed traveling to Florida, Canada, Pennsylvania, and Alaska. They would spend many days along the Columbia River and Potholes Reservior digging for Indian artifacts and in the hills above Ellensburg hunting for Ellensburg blues. Aside from their adventures, Dorothy and John owned and operated Magoteaux’s Men’s Shop until 1984 when John experienced serious health issues. He eventually recovered, then Dorothy and John retired and enjoyed time with their children and grandchildren. John’s illness returned and Dorothy cared for him until he died in 1993.
After John’s death, Dorothy busied herself with sewing and gardening and enjoyed trips to Pennsylvania, Alaska and Oregon. She especially enjoyed her rose, peony, and hosta gardens. In 1998, she married Carl Klingeman and resided in her home on Rainier Street. They operated Carl’s accounting business until he retired in 2015. They enjoyed visiting with friends and family, hosting the annual 4th of July picnic, and traveling to Texas, Prince Edward Island and Canada. In 2015, they moved to Parkview Estates Senior Living in Kennewick, WA. Carl died in March 2019 and Dorothy moved to Coventry House Assisted Living in Othello, WA. She spent her days enjoying her family, visiting with other residents and staff, watching the birds at her feeders, and watching the Hallmark Channel. Dorothy loved family and looked forward to visits from everyone, especially the grandkids, who held a special place in her heart.
Dorothy was a long-time member of Othello First Presbyterian Church, who for many years played the piano for Sunday services, weddings and funerals and was a Sessions and Evangelism Elder. She was known for her giving spirit, strong faith, and relationship with Jesus Christ.
Dorothy is survived by her brother Jim (Betty) Logan, her six children, Steve (Pam) Allard, Mark (Susan) Allard, Cheryl Latschaw (Skip), James (Esther) Allard, Susan (Dan) Huntzinger, and Scott (Saundra) Allard: nine stepchildren Sharon Hampton, John Magoteaux Jr., Jim Magoteaux, Carl Klingeman Jr, Peggy Ann Berk, Sylvia Erickson, Becky Branson, Kathy Klingeman, and Paul Klingeman along with 3 nephews, 8 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 22 step-grandchildren, and 37 step-great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the Coventry House Staff and Assured Hospice Staff for their excellent care of Dorothy.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can also help to notify people of funeral or memorial services, and provide a sense of closure for those grieving.
