Cleveland Ave.“Cynt” attended North Forsyth High School. In her early days she was employed in various jobs, such as Sarah Lee and held various factory positions.She enjoyed her time relaxing and sitting on the porch with Amos, her life partner of over 30 years. Her hobbies included playing cards and listening to her favorite music. She loved music from R’Kelly, S.O.S Band, O’Jays, and many more hits. “Cynt” also enjoyed cooking and could make some of the best southern cooked foods that people in the neighborhood would always stop by to eat.On the late evening of Thursday March 31, 2022, God dispatched his angels to his child and carried her from labor to reward. Obituary Preview: Sonya Yvette Scales McKeever, affectionately known as “Song” was born July 23, 1961, to Orlando Scales, Sr. and Barbara Scales in Winston-Salem, NC.  She grew up in Winston-Salem in the Boston Project housing development. She attended the WSFCS System and later graduated from Forsyth Technical Community College with her GED.
After receiving her GED, she began working in the WS/FC School System in multiple departments including work at the Career Center, food service/cafeteria, and drove the school/activity buses for many of the schools for over 25 years. After working for the school system, she continued to spend time with her family.
“Song” lived her life to the fullest and always kept her smile. With her jokes and loud music, she knew how to keep you laughing and make you feel good. She enjoyed cooking and was known by family as a “foody” and did not mind letting you know if something was wrong with your cooking in a loving way. You could catch her many times either shopping or having fun at the sweepstakes. Sonya was a dedicated grandma that enjoyed spoiling all her grandchildren. She lived for her husband, kids, grandchildren, and her family. “Song” was looked to as the “big sister” that you could always lean on.
On Monday March 7, 2022, God dispatched his angels and carried Sonya to her new heavenly home. Preceding her in death were her parents Orlando and Barbara Scales, Sr.; Grandmother Bernice Davis; Grandfather Clarence James; one brother Orlando Scales, Jr.; and a nephew Kelvin “WOO” James, Jr.

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Belvia Delores Nowlin Venson, was born August 28, 1953 to Barbara Jean Nowlin of Winston-Salem NC and Randall Kershaw of New York, New York. She departed this life on January 20, 2022.
Belvia, passionately known as Penny, was loved and cherished by family and friends throughout the community. She enjoyed attending church and watching sports on tv. She looked forward to spending time with her brother Willie Nowlin at Winston-Salem State football games each year. In her earlier years she loved to draw and shared her love as an artist throughout her home.
Penny worked as a formal employee at Forsyth Memorial Hospital for over 20 years. Her colleagues knew her as a kind compassionate soul, always willing to help others. During her last 10 years of her career she worked in the hospitality industry at Taco Bell and Graylyn Estate as laundry attendant. Penny was a devoted mother and loved to love on people. Her sweet spirit and smile brighten every room she entered. Her love for God and those she encountered was visible to all who knew her. Penny also loved to sing, one of her favorite songs was “ I shall not be moved”. She was a God fearing woman of amazing strength and unwavering faith. Her favorite Bible verse, was  John 3:16- “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that who ever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Penny is preceded in death by her father, Randall Kershaw; and brother Kenneth Cole.
She is survived by her mother Barbara Jean Nowlin, three children Rodrigueze Nowlin of Charlotte, North Carolina and Velma Renae (Ernest) White of Winston Salem, North Carolina and Michael (Lavonda) Nowlin of Augusta, Georgia, grandchildren; Donta Nowlin of Rochester New York, Quashan Young of Winston Salem, North Carolina, Rodrigueze Nowlin Jr. and Bryson Nowlin both of Charlotte North Carolina, Mishiya Nowlin of Greensboro, North Carolina, Aaliyah Lewis of Agusta, Georgia, Rashard Nowlin and Rylan Nowlin of Charlotte, North Carolina and one great granddaughter BreeAnn Nowlin of Charlotte, North Carolina; brothers Willie Alfonzo Nowlin, Lester (Henrietta) Nowlin, and Ronald Nowlin, sisters; Sharon Nowlin, Vanessa (Anthony) Westberry, Roslyn (Irvin) Payne all of Winston Salem North Carolina and a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins.
A viewing will be held from 5:00pm until 7:00pm Friday, January 28, 2022 at The Trinity Center of Winston Salem.
Funeral Services celebrating Penny’s life will be held at 12:00 pm Saturday, January 29, 2022 at The Trinity Center of Winston-Salem, 5307 Peters Creek Parkway Winston-Salem, NC 27127. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.

Mamie Lee Goodwin - Unknown - January 10, 2022

Obituary Preview: Mamie Lee Westberry Goodwin, 90, of 5555 Stone Crossing Dr, was born on September 1, 1931 in Orangeburg, SC to Herbert and Mary Lee Westberry.  She was the second of seven children.
She was a graduate of the local Orangeburg County Schools.  While finishing her education at the age of 15 she married the love of her life, Luther James Goodwin in 1947. After finishing her education, they moved to Winston-Salem to begin a new Journey. From this union came six beautiful children. Together they instilled in their children many things but most of all the power of knowing the Lord and building the foundation on how to live a life that would honor God. “Gem” as she was affectionately called loved the lord and stood on his word that carried her each day as she began with a prayer and song.  She was a member of Union Bethel AME Church before moving her membership to Christ Kingdom Building Worship Center.  Her love for Christ drew thousands and allowed her to touch and serve  the lives of adults, administration, students  and youth in many ways.
Throughout her life she held many different careers including working for Reynolds and National Linen. In her career choices she had a stronger passion in being an entrepreneur. Her and her husband decided to open a restaurant called the Luncheonette in downtown Winston-Salem. Together they operated for 40 years. After closing she continued her entrepreneurial skills by being a hairstylist after graduating from LaMae Beauty College. While still pursuing her gifts and talents she still wanted to give back by becoming an educator/cook in the WS/FCS Career Center, where she retired.
After retirement she continued her work on her entrepreneurial gifts. Mamie enjoyed cooking and especially baking special desserts for the children and grandchildren. She loved being around people and encouraging them. Anytime there was a problem she always knew God could solve them by going to the bible and giving you a Word. In her spare time, she loved gardening, traveling, and playing the piano.
On the evening of Monday January 10, 2022, God dispatched his angels to carry Mamie Lee Westberry Goodwin to her new heavenly home. She was proceeded in death by her parents Herbert and Mary Lee Westberry; her husband Luther James Goodwin, whom she was united in marriage to for more than 49 years. Her son, Luther James Goodwin, Jr., two brothers, Herbert and Henry Westberry; two sisters, Lizzie Mae Westberry and Ida Mae Adgerson and one granddaughter, Danyell Westberry.
Mamie leaves to cherish her memory five generations.  Her five children, Mary Ann Speas, Lewis (Wanda) Westberry, Ellen (Kenny) Wallace-Searcy, James (Tukessa) Goodwin and Marta (Shannon) Kinzer. 2 Special Granddaughters whom she help raise; Camille Speas and Crystal (Dwight Glenn); 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grands and 14 great, great grandchildren; two sisters; Vernell Greene of Brunswick, New Jersey and Ruby Smalls of Winston-Salem, and a host of special nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
A public viewing will be Friday January 14, 2022 from 4 to 8pm at Christ Kingdom Building Worship Center, 3894 Northampton Dr, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.
The family will have private service on Saturday January 15, 2022 at the church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Betty Lynn Parker Eason was born on August 11, 1976, in Miami, Florida to James Lines and Stormy Parker at Jackson Memorial Hospital. She was a graduate of the Miami-Dade County School System.
After graduating from high school, Betty went forward in her educational pathway in receiving many various degrees. She earned two Associate Degrees, one bachelor’s degree, and most recently a master’s degree from Laurel University. Her career and education led her to become a supervisor with Essilor of America (Optical Management) and was tasked with supporting the west coast markets. She was extremely productive and attentive in her task while working. Most importantly carried a high standard of quality in all her work and in life.
Outside of work and school she enjoyed her family and spending time with them. July 21, 2001, she married the love of her life, Charlton Eason, both being only 24 years old. A love that continuously grew stronger each day. The two of them grew together and always trusted God on every step that was made in life. They remained as one through the good and bad times because they shared a bond and love that would always hold them together.
From their union came their two precious children Tristian J. Parker and Asaundi J. Eason. As a family they enjoyed their time together and traveled. Spending time with family meant more than anything in the world because of how much Betty valued life and spending time with the ones she loved. She also enjoyed crafts and was quite good at creating a variety of goods and gifts.
On the morning of Tuesday November 23, 2021, God dispatched his angels to carry Betty Lynn Parker Eason to her new heavenly home. Preceding her in death were her parents.
Betty leaves to cherish her memory is her husband of 21 years Charlton Eason; children Tristian j Parker and Asaundi j. Eason; grandson Ty-storm Parker; sister Amber Huet; aunt Linda Parker; a host of brother and sister in laws, nieces, nephews; and special friends Angie Wyrick and Nancee Roll.

While attending East Forsyth High School he was an active football player. While he was on the football team, he was a Linebacker and Quarterback. After graduation, Kelvin endeavored into various jobs and entrepreneurial ventures. He loved landscaping and was known for doing yard work such as cutting the grass. He loved cutting yards and giving his special manicured touch that he had mastered.
Outside of Kelvin’s endeavors, he always enjoyed his passion of riding dirt bikes and  four wheelers. This gave him the thrill and enjoyment that bought him peace and happiness. Even with the joy of riding with his crew, the happiest moments were also spending time with his family. “WOO” loved his family and was a family man. He especially loved spending time with his nieces and nephews creating countless memories.
On Monday October 25, 2021, God dispatched his angels around Kelvin and carried him to his new heavenly home. Preceding him in death were his maternal grandparents, Orlando and Barbara Scales, Sr.; and paternal grandmother, Nanny Mae Crump; an uncle, Orlando Scales, Jr.; and a brother, Andre Robinson.

I was born on November 5,1944 in Rockingham County to the late Walter and Belle Dalton  I received my education in the public schools of Rockingham County where I  graduated from Charles Drew High School. I received further training in electrical work.  I worked for National Linen for many years.
After joining Emmanuel Baptist Church, I became active with the Sunday School, audio/visual ministries and Transportation.  I was an active member of the Trustee Board when my health began to fail.
On January 30, 1993, I married the one who stood by me and loved me unconditionally, Annie Hairston.  I loved my family, fishing, hunting, basketball and showing off my Ford truck at car shows.
A sister, Sandra Dalton and son, Mario Patterson preceded me in death.
Left to cherish my memory is my wife, Rev. Annie Dalton; children, James (Cookie) Dalton, Jr. of Virginia and Alicia Dalton Price of Eden, NC and Russell Patterson of Alabama; grandchildren, Chelsea (Lonnie) Roberts, Faith Price, Christopher Price, Patrice (Corie) Manns, Andrea Matthews and Tyrie Brown; sister Brenda Dalton (Rev. Maria was known for her smile and hugs. There wasn't a day she didn't show happiness. Even if she had met you for the first time, she had a way of making you feel special and loved. Even on her worst day you could see that light shining on her face.
She loved the Lord Jesus with all her heart and taught us as a family to walk in His ways. She loved her children and grandchildren. She also loved to water her plants and care for her puppy and a turtle.
Everywhere she went, it was almost certain that her husband was right there next to her.
Maria is survived by her husband of 40 plus years, Miguel Arroyo; children; Ariana, Israel & Victor, grandchildren; Cindy, Heidi & Sara (twin girls), and Adrian. Adrian was her first boy grandson, He's in the NICU and was inpatient during the time of her passing, but she was able to meet him before she left. He was due to be born the day before her birthday. She also left a son in law and daughter in law whom she loved very much. Israel Villalba and Grecia Ramírez.

Obituary Preview: Michael Sparks affectionately known as “Chocolate,” departed this earthly life unexpectedly on Friday June 18, 2021 at his home in Winston-Salem, N.C.  He was born in Hartsfield, S.C. to the late Samuel Lee Sparks, Jr. and the late Frances Marion Bowman Sparks. He was educated in the local public schools of Darlington County, S.C. and attended Butler High School where he was the manager of the baseball team and also a JV Football player.  Being the servant and helper of men he was, he was reared in the United Methodist Church as a young boy and served as an acolyte. Upon leaving High School he moved to Winston-Salem, N.C. and began his professional career first with the City of Winston-Salem and subsequently began a 34 year career at Winston Salem State University(W.S.S.U.) where he first began as a Grounds man, a Lead Man, a Grounds Supervisor and ultimately the Building Environmental Services Manager where he oversaw the entire Campus Grounds Crew, the Moving and Hauling Crew and the Sanitation and Recycling Crew.  As a Lead man, Supervisor and Manager, he led by example.  He also worked right alongside his crew or with no crew as he worked many long days and nights in inclement weather conditions.  He also was a mentor and encourager to the many young men he supervised as he would encourage them to keep good work ethics as well as maintain their status on the job to be good role models for their families.  As a term of endearment he was referred to as “Boss man” by his crew.  He was also employed by United Maintenance Corporation & Lyon. He also was a professional yard man and landscaper who maintained many homes and rental properties in the area. If he could help you whether family, friend or foe he would do just that!  He had a heart of gold! He had an awesome style all his own when it came to dressing in any outfit whether it was for church or just casual!  He was also an avid Dallas Cowboy’s fan (DEM BOYZ)! As a young child when in Winston-Salem, N.C., he also attended Macedonia Holiness Church of the Apostolic Faith where his Maternal Grandmother Pensacola Bowman was a Mother.  As a young adult, he joined the St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Joseph R. Samuels and now the Dr. James R. Cook where he attended faithfully. He loved all types of music and he loved worshipping and praising God!

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Roberta Marie Shell Myers, aka “Granny,” 82, was born on June 19, 1938 to Reverend Spurgeon Stevens and Lucille McCleary.  She was raised by her grandparents.
Granny attended Carver High School.  She became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at the former Pell Care Nursing Care in Winston-Salem, NC. She later married Rossie Shell, Sr. and from their union brought David, Keith, Crawford, Michael, Cynthia, Barbara, and Reginald Shell.
Roberta joined Emmanuel Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Dr. John Mendez.  She later married Roosevelt Myers, Jr. on October 4, 1989.  The two would travel to many different places to vacation, fish, and attend Masonic events.  It made her feel like she relived her childhood days.  After the passing of her husband in 1999, she became more active in the church.  She joined the Single’s Ministry, Adult Sunday School Ministry, and EBC Spiritual Choir.
Granny also enjoyed being with family and friends when she was not at church. She was the life of the party. Many times, you would catch her playing spades with family and friends, such as Roberta Surles and Esther Boulware (both deceased).  Anytime you saw one you would see the three of them. Even when her health began to decline, she still found joy in watching her sports channels, Young and the Restless, Gaither Gospel Hour, listening to gospel music and old favorites, and many other activities to keep her active.
On Monday, January 11, 2021, she heard the voice of Jesus say, ‘Come unto me and rest; lay down, thou weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast.’ She came to Jesus as she was, so weary, worn and sad. She has found in him a resting place and her heart is filled with gladness.
Roberta was preceded in death by her parents; children Reginald “Reggie” Shell, Rossie David Shell, Jr., and Crawford Dean Shell;  her husbands, Rossie Shell, Sr.,  Roosevelt Myers; and grandparents.
She leaves to cherish most dear and precious memories her two sons, Michael Shell and Keith Shell; two daughters, Barbara Shell and Cynthia Shell; two grandsons, Damien (Janay) Shell and Rossie Shell, III;  two granddaughters, Alvinia (Chad) Scales and LaTosha (Shawn) Wilson; great-grandchildren, Chaelin Scales, Tayvion Shell, Asia Shell,  Sariyah Wilson, and Shawn Wilson; special friends, Janie “2 Cent” O’Neil, Janie Floyd, Oak Haven Apartments Community, Emmanuel Baptist Church family, Russell Funeral Home Staff and a host of cousins, and friends.

Christine was a member of Macedonia True Vine Holiness Church under the leadership of Bishop S.D. Johnson and First Lady Billie Johnson. As a member of the church, she was very active in many church activities. Her main function was being apart of the Mothers Board of the church. She loved the word and believed in the power of God, knowing all things are possible through him.
Her family brought her so much joy. She enjoyed fellowshipping with them through cooking and eating together. Christine was an awesome cook and would cook some of the best dishes that only she could do. In her spare time, you would find her shopping at Goodwill finding clothes and items that she loved. She also loved to travel and being around the water at Myrtle Beach where it brought her peace and calmness. Even at her later age she still was young at heart loving to go to Disneyworld and enjoying certain activities that brought her joy and happiness.
On the morning of Wednesday, November 11, 2020, Christine took the morning train home to travel to her final home of eternal rest with God.
Christine is survived by her children Michael (Sherri) Moses, Ahmad (Marsha) Moses, Mario (Kattie) Moses, and Rittina “DeeDee” (Paul, Sr.) Feggins; former spouse Jimmy L Moses, Sr.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Larry was the oldest out of five kids. In his childhood, he attended Fairview Elementary, Kennedy Middle School, and Atkins High School.  He ran track and played basketball at Atkins High School as well. Everyone who knew him instantly loved him for his humorous nature, calm demeanor, and random fun-filled outburst.
He was a major force and his love for his family was enormous and unmatched. Especially for his grandkids. He always lived with the principles of taking care of your family and never to worry because what is meant to happen will. Larry worked at Americraft Carton and retired as a manager at Bethesda Center for the Homeless.
In his spare time, he spent as much time as possible with his grandchildren, family, and friends. Larry enjoyed fishing, watching sports as well as reading. He especially loved to read his bible. He was a diehard Lakers, Cowboys, and UNC Tarheels fan.
