Josephine Gail Salzburg - March 30, 1955 - February 27, 2024

Departed: 02/27/2024 (Daytona Beach)
Obituary Preview: Born on March 30, 1955, Josephine Gail Johnson Salzburg (Gail) left this world on February 27, 2024. A competitive spirit who hated losing, and already having beaten cancer once, Gail decided she could no longer weather the storm against a second cancer. Gail’s departure has left a void in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
One of five children, Gail was born in Atlanta, Georgia and grew up in Miami, Florida, where she attended 4th-12th grades. She was a cheerleader and softball player at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy. She then attended the University of Florida, joined the Chi Omega sorority, and ultimately began dating her best friend, Mark Salzburg, who she married in 1980.
Before embracing motherhood, Gail worked as a banker and became one of the first women Vice Presidents in Miami. Later in life, Gail and her husband partnered to build Salzburg Animal Hospital, a successful local veterinary practice.
Gail and Mark were blessed with two children, Sloane and Derek, who were the center of Gail’s world. Her devotion to family knew no bounds, and her love and guidance will forever be cherished by those she leaves behind.
A dedicated and passionate Gator fan, football season was a joyous (for the most part) time for Gail, and her spirited- some may recall them as loud- cheers will forever echo in the memories of those who shared those moments with her.
Gail’s magnetic personality made her the life of every party. Her ability to connect with people, coupled with her infectious laughter, ensured that every gathering was filled with joy, warmth, and a beautifully set table. Gail had an innate talent for creating spaces that radiated love and beauty.
Gail made friends everywhere she went- from the tennis court, to book club, her motherhood besties- the silver lockets, sorority sisters, to life-long childhood friends- she made and kept friends from every era. Many considered her the strongest person they knew, and she tackled all of her life’s challenges with unwavering strength and fortitude. Gail’s departure leaves a vacuum that can never be filled, but her memory will forever be a beacon of love and resilience for those who knew and cherished her. May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the beauty and warmth she so effortlessly brought into the lives of others. [Although Gail loved flowers, she asked that in lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in honor of family members gone too soon; or the American Lung Association in the hopes that more awareness will help catch non-smoker’s lung cancer earlier.]

A third generation Floridian and proud class of 1965 Mainland High School alumnus, Kerian was born on August 6, 1947. She was born in Altoona, PA, and moved to the metropolitan DC area in her early teens. Eventually settling in Cheverly, MD right across the street from her parents, her family enjoyed an idyllic upbringing raised with a large extended family close by. She had a lengthy career with several federal government agencies, retiring from the Secret Service. She relocated to Daytona, the family‘s favorite vacation destination, first to Spruce Creek to a home she and her husband designed, followed by their final spot on the ocean in Oceans IV to be close to her sister. Family was everything to her and she was truly loved by all who knew her. She enjoyed all forms of entertainment and music, nature, her home and garden, and was a loving Mom to many pampered pets. Along with her razor sharp wit, she was an excellent role model and showed tremendous compassion, caring and kindness to everyone. She was a woman of great faith who led by example. She took time to visit neighbors who were ailing or in nursing homes, always thinking of others’ needs before her own. Left to cherish her memory are daughters Lida (Bob) Krause, Jennifer Wright, grandchildren Louisa and Nathaniel (Bethany) Krause, and adoring nieces and nephews, too many to name individually. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service details, allowing them to attend and show their condolences.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable accomplishments, military service, or charitable affiliations.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should aim to capture the personality, spirit, and essence of the person who has passed away.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and length of the piece. On average, it may take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to craft a well-written and meaningful obituary.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a wonderful way to personalize the obituary and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you'll typically need to contact their obituary department directly. They'll provide guidance on their specific submission requirements, including word count limits, formatting guidelines, and deadlines.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Absolutely! Online obituary platforms have become increasingly popular in recent years. These websites allow you to create and share an obituary with a wider audience, often with more flexibility in terms of content and design.

How long does an online obituary remain available?

The duration for which an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep it active for a few weeks or months, while others may maintain it indefinitely.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

Do I need to include all family members in an obituary?

No, you don't need to include every single family member in an obituary. Focus on listing immediate family members, such as spouse, children, grandchildren, parents, and siblings. You may also choose to mention close relatives or special friends.

Can I include humorous or lighthearted anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including funny stories or quirky characteristics can help bring the person to life and make the tribute more relatable and engaging.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

How do I find inspiration for writing an obituary?

You can draw inspiration from various sources: memories of the person's life events, conversations with friends and family members, old photos or mementos, or even other well-written obituaries.

Are there any specific writing styles or formats for obituaries?

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

How do I proofread an obituary for errors?

Carefully review the text multiple times for spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and factual inaccuracies. Ask others to review it as well before submitting it for publication.

What if I'm struggling emotionally while writing an obituary?

It's normal to feel overwhelmed when writing about someone you've lost. Take breaks when needed, seek support from loved ones or professionals if necessary, and remember that this tribute is a celebration of their life.

Can I reuse an existing obituary template or example?

You can use templates or examples as guides but try not to simply copy them verbatim. Instead, use them as inspiration to craft a unique tribute that genuinely reflects the person who has passed away.

How do I know if my obituary is ready for publication?

You'll know your obituary is ready when you've included all essential information, told a meaningful story about the person's life, and reviewed it carefully for errors. Trust your instincts – when it feels right, it's ready!
