Katie was born on May 24, 1935, in Roland, NC, to the late John and Lou Ella White Bethea.  She was also preceded in death by her husband Eddie Carmichael, three sisters, and four brothers.
She was a member of Mt. Horeb AME Church in Evergreen, NC.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at Evergreen Community Cemetery, 1574 Old Hwy 74 Evergreen, North Carolina.
A walk-through viewing will be held from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm on Friday, July 16, 2021, at D&A Funeral Services Chapel, 212 South Wilkes Street, Chadbourn, North Carolina.
She leaves to cherish her memory four sons Fletcher Bethea of Whiteville, NC, William Carmichael (Tabitha) of Jacksonville, Florida, Roscoe Bethea (Darlene) of Evergreen, NC, and James Bethea of Evergreen, NC.  A host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  A special niece Mildred McDufffie and a special nephew Alton Bethea.

Obituary Preview: Nettie Lee Frink, age 86 of Chadbourn and formerly of Brooklyn, New York, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, surrounded by her loving family.
Nettie was born on November 29, 1934, to the late William Howard and Rena Smith.  She was also preceded in death by her husband Rudolph Mack “Blusie” Frink; son Howard Smith; granddaughter Keisha Smith; and stepdaughter Dorothy Jacobs.
A walk-through viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2021, at D&A Funeral Services Chapel, 212 South Wilkes Street, Chadbourn.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 2021, at Belvue Cemetery, 1055 Clarendon-Chadbourn Road, Chadbourn with Pastor Virgil Reaves officiating.
Nettie very much enjoyed taking care of people, so, it should come as no surprise that she enjoyed a long career in the healthcare industry, where she worked, and eventually retired from Creedmor Psychiatric Center in New York. Nettie also nurtured and cared for those she loved through cooking for them. She enjoyed being creative with her meals and if she ever made you any of her signature dishes like potato salad, banana pudding, and any of her fancy mixed green salads, you knew how gifted she was in that area. Nettie also found peace and solace in doing word puzzles, and you could always be assured that a puzzle book was never far away from her. Nettie was the mother to her son Howard Smith, and a marriage to the love of her life, Rudolph Mack “Blusie” Frink, created a beautiful, blended family that consisted of her son, and his three daughters.
Nettie and “Blusie” relocated from Brooklyn to Chadbourn in 1995; and while Chadbourn was his hometown, Nettie took to southern living and begin making a life for herself. She became a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Chadbourn, where she served on the Usher Board. She attended regularly, as her health permitted.
She leaves to cherish her memory, daughter-in-law Emelda Smith; stepdaughters Margaret Frink-Britt and Sabrina Frink; granddaughter Tara Brown; grandson Kevin Smith; great-grandchildren Terrence Smith, Khyrie Rosado, Vanessa Joyner, Mickey Smith, Destiny Smith, Lavon Smith, and Shania Smith.  A host of cousins, friends, and extended families including the Reaves, Lesane and LeGrand.

Willie Joe Walls - October 28, 1926 - February 16, 2021

Obituary Preview: Willie Joe Walls of Chadbourn entered into the presence of the Lord on February 16 at Brookdale Senior Living in Durham. He was 96.
Born Oct. 28, 1926, to Dillie E Walls and Hollie Faulk, Mr. Walls was reared in the Grist Community of Chadbourn, served in the U.S. Army after graduating high school, earned a Master’s Degree from NC A&T University and taught agriculture at the high school level.
After working for the NC Department of Public Instruction, Mr. Walls returned to Columbus County and became the first African American to serve as Assistant Superintendent for the Columbus County Schools, from which he retired.
He was well known in the community as President of the Westside Alumni Association, Gospel DJ and General Manager of WVOE radio, and more.
He was also a recipient of The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, presented by the governor of North Carolina.
He was predeceased by his wife of more than 60 years, Dora Kilgore Walls.
He leaves cherishing his memory a son, Dr. Bertram Walls(Marilynn) of Delray Beach, Florida; two daughters, Denelda Walls-Brandon(Steven) and Sabina Walls Cox(Kenneth) both of Durham, NC; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a special Goddaughter; and many relatives and friends.
A walk-through viewing was planned from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, February 19, at D&A Funeral Services Chapel, 212 South Wilkes Street, Chadbourn.
A graveside service with military honors was planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, February 20, at Belvue Cemetery, 1055 Clarendon-Chadbourn Road, Chadbourn, with Pastor Jerry Ganus officiating.
