Tabitha was born on January 11, 1981 in Saint Joseph, MI, to Myron "Butch" and Sheila  (Bowman) Conklin.

On December 6, 2008 in La Porte, IN, she married Peter who survives.  Also surviving is her son, Paul Ludwig of La Porte; 2 brothers, Christopher (Jamie) Conklin of New Buffalo, MI, and Myron "MG" (Lisa Huff) Conklin III of Sawyer, MI.; 1 sister, Michelle (Christopher) Brown of La Porte; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Tabitha was a homemaker.  She enjoyed retro video games, monkey book, and spending time with her family.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte. A private family service will take place at a later date.

James "Jimbo" J. Corbett - August 15, 1963 - April 15, 2022

Obituary Preview: James “Jimbo” J. Corbett, 58, passed away, surrounded in love with his family on Friday, April 15th 2022 at Franciscan Health Michigan City.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Bobby Joe Corbett and Louise Corbett, along with two brothers, Kimmy Lee and Robert Corbett.  Surviving are his siblings, Joseph (Katrina) Corbett, Terry Corbett, Sandra (Leslie) Lipscomb, Alan Corbett, Brenda (Ronnie) Sullivan, Randall (Angela) Corbett and John Corbett, along with many nieces and nephews.

James was brought into the world by his parents, Bobby Joe and Louise Corbett on August 15th 1963.  Upon his arrival, both parents couldn’t agree on his name and in some unknown happenstance, he left the hospital with 2 birth certificates, 2 names and 2 birthdays.  His “alias”, as his family called it, was Andrew Kenneth after his grandfather.  The mix up wasn’t discovered until later in his adult life. Even though he had another name attached to him, he was and always will be the legend, James J Corbett.   His name came from the iconic American world heavyweight champion boxer, James John Corbett, and he, without a doubt, filled the shoes of the name.  For a small guy, he was mighty and had muscles like Popeye to prove it.

James was the great protector of his family and always had the backs of his fellow Corbett crew.  Jimbo was tough, but he also had a softer side and the kindest smile. He loved his dogs as if they were his children and enjoyed taking many pictures of all of the dogs in his life.

James had an amazing artistic ability and just like his mom, he was an outstanding poet. He was not only gifted with words, but also had an incredible skill at drawing. His nieces and nephews were always in awe of his creativity. James doodled cartoons, made picture frames, and created baby shoes out of potato chip bags for them.

Jimbo had an eye for photography, especially when he was out on the boat, where he took stunning photos of Lake Michigan at sunset.  He had so many happy places like being on the water, fishing, deer hunting, mushroom hunting, and riding his motorcycle.  His Harley Davison motorcycle was his pride and joy and it was as much of a symbol of freedom to him as the American flag and a Bald Eagle.

In his free time, Jimbo was also musically inclined and was the go to video man while his brothers jammed in their band, The No Cover Band.  Listening to his brothers rock n’ roll wasn’t the only place that Jimbo liked to jam.  Every Sunday morning he looked forward to the music and songs that his Pickens family would play at Full Gospel Church in Michigan City, where he attended. The Word of God at his cousin Dennis Pickens' church meant the world to him. He had an incredibly powerful faith in his Lord and Savior, and knew that God blessed him every waking day just by being alive.

James was grateful to be alive by, not only the grace of God, but by the aid of the amazing doctors, nurses and dietitians at Davita Dialysis, where he was treated for over 17 years. He even wrote a poem about his experiences there and how they taught him to keep himself healthy throughout the years of his treatments.  He started each day with a thumbs up, a smile and a strong will to live. James had a heart of gold and held everyone he loved near and dear to his heart.  His legacy and love will live on in spirit and will stay forever with those who loved him.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m., on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at Door Village Cemetery.

Surviving Edward are his son, Alfred "AJ" Moya of Tucson, AZ; grandson, Anthony Williams of Tucson, AZ; significant other, Kimberly Aust of La Porte; siblings, Suzanne (Eddie) Dowdy of La Porte, Lisa Linn of La Porte, John (Stephanie) Wellinski of La Porte, Charles Wellinski of La Porte, James (Billie Jo) Wellinski of Mishawaka, and David (Ann) Engelbrecht of Iowa; 12 nieces and nephews; 6 great-nieces and nephews; as well as special dog, Buddy Cole.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Gayle Turner; and great-niece, Makayla Ethridge.

Edward was an Inspector for many years.  He enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles, especially riding his, and cookouts at the beach.  Edward was often found watching golf, Survivor, and his favorite sports teams, the Bears and Cubs.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte. No visitation or services will be held.

Martin Allen Barnes - June 03, 1941 - April 14, 2022

Obituary Preview: Martin Allen Barnes, aka "Marty", "Butch" and "PaPa", 80, of La Porte, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2022 at Miller's Merry Manor, New Carlisle, IN.

Martin was born on June 3, 1941 in La Porte, IN, to Betty (Burden) Barnes and Martin John Hough.  He was later adopted by Keith Barnes.

On April 24, 1965 at St. John's Lutheran Church, La Porte, he married Connie Jean Dittmer who survives.  Also surviving are his children, Brenda (Victor) Hull, Kelly (Thomas) Owens, and Jeffrey (Theresa) Barnes all of La Porte; 7 grandchildren, Lindsey (John Berry) Hull, Matthew Hull, Nickolas (Josie) Owens, Tyler (DeMira Hunter) Owens, Jordan (Christian) Porter, Megan Barnes, and Kyleigh Barnes; great-granddaughter, Ellianna Owens; and 2 second cousins.

He was preceded by his parents; grandparents; aunt; uncle; and 2 grandchildren.

Martin proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 4 years, with the last two years serving as an Embassy Guard in Geneva, Switzerland.

Martin was a phone man for at least 35 years at General Telephone Electric.  After retirement, for fun, he accepted a job as a bagger at Al's Grocery Store, La Porte, mostly to chit-chat with customers and catch up on local gossip.  He enjoyed walking, cutting wood, mowing his lawn, and watching football, basketball, and NASCAR.  Martin was often found enjoying his early morning coffee at Jenny Rae's Restaurant, reading the paper and harassing the waitresses.  He is fondly remembered for his dedication to his children and grandchildren.  Martin would escort his children to school activities and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren's Little League games.  Martin will be dearly missed by those who love him.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2022 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.  Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

A time of visitation will be held from 5 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Virginia was born on May 16, 1933 in Walnut Ridge, AR, to Arthur and Luna (VanWinkle) Ramsey.

On February 14, 1952, Virginia married John Seabourn, who preceded her in death on December 26, 1985.  On October 6, 2018, after 19 years together, Virginia married William Marlow, who survives.  Also surviving are Virginia's daughters, Peggy (Scott) Seabourn-McCrea of San Rafael, CA and Oleta (Todd) Kaminski of New Carlisle; 4 grandchildren, Jennifer Kaminski of Marco Island, FL, Dillon (Taylor) Kaminski of New Carlisle, John (Shaina Orlowski) Kaminski of New Carlisle, and Tyler Kaminski of New Carlisle.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Roy Ramsey; and sister, Sue Ramsey Maddox.

Virginia was a laborer for many years at American Rubber. She was a member of the VFW, Falcons, and Moose Lodge, where she held numerous positions within each organization.  Virginia enjoyed bowling and loved to travel.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.  A private burial will take place at a later date.

Obituary Preview: Nina Lucille Firebaugh, 92, of rural La Porte, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at Chesterton Manor.     Nina was born in La Porte, IN, on December 30, 1929, to Wheeler Richard and Iva Gertrude (Barnes) Meyers.    She was the beloved wife of Charles “Dan” Firebaugh for 66 years. They were married on September 4, 1954, in Galena Baptist Church. He preceded her in death on November 25, 2020. Surviving are her children, Jane Firebaugh of Porter, Jerry (Mona Reinhard) Firebaugh of Winfield, IL, and Karen Firebaugh of rural La Porte; sisters, Eleanor Benford of Michigan City, Irma Freeman of Sheffield, AL, and Betty (Bill) Swanson of rural LaPorte; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Maurice Meyers and Don Meyers; and sisters Esther Martin, Ruth Conklin, and Carol Waak.

Nina accepted Christ as her Savior as a young person and lived out her faith. Nina met her husband, Dan, while they attended Bryan College, where she graduated with a degree in English Literature. Dan went on to be an educator and elementary school principal. Nina was a homemaker, dedicated and loving to her husband and children. She made many memories with her children, including teaching her daughters to crochet, sew, cook and bake. She enjoyed talking with her children after school and hearing about their day, and, in the process, imparted wisdom and life lessons. Her smile and friendliness were known to many. She read her Bible faithfully and applied that to daily life. She attended Liberty Bible Church.

Albert Floryan Wszolek - August 13, 1943 - April 11, 2022

Obituary Preview: He never made it to Luckenbach, Texas, not with Waylon and Willie and the boys, but he reckoned he was just fine living the simple life right where he was.

Albert F. Wszolek, 78, of LaPorte, formerly of Gary, died April 11, 2022. He was a switchman for Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway, retiring after 35 years, and served as the state legislative representative for United Transportation Union Local 1383. A proud Army veteran who served in Vietnam, he was a member of the VFW in Rolling Prairie. He also was a member of the Polish Roman Catholic Union in LaPorte.   An avid bowler who coached the youth league at 12/20 Bowl, Al always laughed about the time he told a salesman that he’d “bowl ya for it.” Of course he won. And just like his father and brothers before him, Al enjoyed the quiet calm of a day on the lake, especially when the fish were biting. When retirement left him bored, Al turned to an old hobby and reupholstered items at Furniture Werks in Michigan City. If he wasn’t watching sports (his beloved Cubs won a World Series in his lifetime!) or westerns on the old boob tube, he was putzing around in the garage or admiring wildlife from his back yard. Al surely will be remembered for all the family gatherings he hosted. They meant so much to him.

Al is survived by wife, Patricia (nee Cave); sons, James, David and Thomas Wszolek; daughters, Christine (John) Pletz, and Cynthia (Chad) Rodda; grandchildren, Colin (Arianna), Jacob and Matthew Rodda, Kate and Sean Pletz; and sister, JoAnne (late Tom) Sullivan. He was preceded in death by parents, Frank and Elizabeth Wszolek; brothers, Joe (late Rosalie), Frank (MaryAnn) and Jerry (late Bonnie) Wszolek; and his precious pug Quiza.

If you’re wondering what took him, he’d tell this writer, “skip that chapter and make it a mystery.” A jokester till the end, he mused that this should end with “everyone can kiss my a$$ goodbye.” That was Dad.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; grandson, Gregory Spencer; 6 brothers, Gerald, Wesley, Donald, Roland, George Jr. and twin brother, Paul; and 6 sisters, Ardell, Georgia, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Darlene, and Eunice.

Pauline retired from Berkel, Inc., La Porte, in 1999, where she worked for Human Resources for 11 years. She was previously employed for 10 years at Fenkers Furniture. Pauline was a member of the Presbyterian Church of La Porte, Charm 'N Chatter Home Extension Club, American Legion Auxiliary Post 83 and the Polish Falcons Club. She loved working with crafts of many kinds, dealing with antiques, attending auctions, and collecting antique dolls.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

A time of visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m until the time of the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

(Sara) Daley of Hudson Lake, Shanntelle (Chris) Wiltfong of Rolling Prairie, Lisa Boyd of Ohio, Cheyenne (Johnny) Daley of MI, Jamie (Adam) Wallis of New Carlisle, Chance (Lynsey) Daley of New Carlisle, and Cynthia Sue (Carl) Daley of Three Oaks, MI; numerous grandchildren, Chelsea (Les) Holewinski of Rolling Prairie, Destiny Daley of La Porte and Nikki Daley of La Porte; numerous great-grandchildren; siblings, brother Jay Daley of South Bend; 2 sisters, Joy Daley Riley of Paducah, KY and Janie Daley Doty of Kalamity Falls, OR; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; sons, Jerry "Moose" Jay Daley and Scott Edward Daley; daughter, Connie Daley; sister, Joanne Marie Smith; and brother, Jerome Sherman Daley.

Joseph was a truck driver at Rieth-Riley for many years. He enjoyed spending time with family.

Larry was a machinist for 10 years at Polygon.  Previously, he had worked in auto body repair and continued to enjoy doing such in his spare time.  He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, and cooking.  Larry also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and had previously been part of a motorcycle group that rode for charities.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.  A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

On July 13, 1946 in La Porte, IN, she married Irwin "Irv" Mellenthin,who preceded her in death.  Surviving Fran are her daughters,  Cathy (Herb) Hagenow of Rockford, MI and Lynn (Norm) Daniel of Coloma, MI; 6 grandchildren, Andy (Char) Hagenow of Rockford, MI, Matt (Karen) Hagenow of Knoxville, TN, Jason (Missi) Hagenow of Ravenna, MI, Jennifer Klitchman of Coloma, MI, Nikki (Kevin) Needham of Coloma, MI and Courtney (Ken) Fisk of Howard City, MI; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 9 step great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Marilyn Burrows and Dolores (Bob) Keller both of La Porte, IN; her beloved caregiver, Tammy Ruminski;  as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Kate Schumaker; father-in-law, George Mellenthin; mother-in-law, Laura Mellenthin; son-in-law, Chet Schlipp; grandson-in-law, Bill Klitchman; and brother-in-law, Gene Burrows.

Fran attended Nursing College in Chicago, IL, until leaving to marry the love of her life.  She was a member of the Beechwood Ladies Golf League, South Bend Country Club, Questors, and St. John's Circle.  Fran enjoyed antiquing, attending auctions, sewing, needle point, and reading.

In their retirement, Fran and Irv enjoyed traveling and visiting their daughters and grandchildren.   They were often seen, with their friends, dancing at the country club.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 4, 2022, at St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor John Albers officiating.  Burial will follow at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, La Porte.

A time of visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the church.

Judy was born on February 4, 1942 in Gary, IN, to Forrest and Barbara (Quaife) Blaker.

On April 13, 1963 in Lake County, IN, she married Steve Schontube, who preceded her in death.  Surviving Judy are her brother, Wade (Pat) Blaker of Rolling Prairie; her nieces and nephews, Robin (Mitch) Downing, Rhonda (Jason) Wilson, Brad (Darlene) Blaker, Tasha Mannia, Nicole (Luke) Snyder, and Kristin Pate; and Judy's beloved pets, Houndy Boy, Frizz, Baby and Gray Kitty.

She was preceded by her husband; parents; sister, Karen McColley; and brothers, Forrest G Blaker III and David Blaker.

Judy was a Qualified Medication Aide for many years in Crown Point.  Her favorite past times included crafting and crocheting.  Judy got joy out of  purchasing 'As Seen on T.V.' items and reading romance novels. She loved and adored her cats and dogs as well as taking care of others.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at the German Methodist Episcopal Cemetery, Cedar Lake, IN, with Pastor Bob Vale officiating.

Brenda was a homemaker who enjoyed taking country rides and watching birds. She dearly loved spending time with her family, kids, and grandkids.

Obituary Preview: Jerry A. Pletting, 72, of La Porte, passed away on March 15 after a month-long battle with COVID-19.

The second of six children by Henry Pletting and Olga (Larson) Pearson, Jerry was born and grew up in Downers Grove, IL. After high school, he worked several professions, including auto repair and restaurant management, before becoming the preeminent water-well driller of the State of Colorado throughout most of the 1980s and 1990s. But what he was arguably best known for were his music talents. Self-taught on guitar and piano, Jerry could pick up almost any instrument and play a song by ear. He spent a lifetime loving rock and roll, most of all Paul McCartney, ABBA, Burton Cummings, Queen, The Who, and Dire Straits.

Jerry was survived by his children, Lynn Thorne and Josh Pletting; his grandchildren, Joseph and Jojo; as well as four of his siblings: Eric (Claudia) Pletting, Laurie (Mark) Swartwout, Greg Pletting, and Barbara (Abdulhamid) Ali. Preceding him in death were his parents and his brother, Steven.

A private celebration of Jerry’s life will be planned at future date.

Surviving Sheila are her 3 children, Eric D. Pressel of Union Mills, Andrea L. (Johnnie) Wiley of Fayetteville, NC, and Tracy E. Hayter of La Porte; 3 grandchildren, Victoria S. Hayter and Luke R. Hayter both of La Porte and April M. Minix of Wade, NC; sister, Karen Parker Scott of Highland, IN, sister-in-law Margaret Kreag of Peru, IN, and brother-in-law James Robert Pressel Sr. of Union Mills. She is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Ben Alan Parker.

A graduate of Union Township High School, Sheila received a bachelor's degree in nursing from Ball State University. She worked as a school nurse for the La Porte Community School Corporation and, after raising her family, for VNA and in medical records.

Sheila was a member of the Liberty Belles Home-Ec Club, People to People International, the La Porte County Historical Society, and the Miriam Benedict Chapter of DAR. She was a lifelong member of the Tracy United Methodist Church and was especially involved in United Methodist Women where she served as a district president. She enjoyed studying the Bible and prayed regularly for those she knew. She was interested in gardening, wildlife, reading, Christmas cookie baking, visiting with friends, traveling, and meeting people from around the world. She loved spending time with extended family at her summer home on Drummond Island, MI. She believed in the importance of education, integrity, and faith and raised her family accordingly.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 4, 2022 at Tracy United Methodist Church with Pastors Kay Bond and Kalvin Morrison officiating.  Interment will follow at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 4, 2022 at Pine Lake Cemetery.

A time of visitation will be held from 3 - 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, 2022 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the church.

Most of his life, Neftali was an autobody repairman.   He enjoyed rebuilding, repairing and painting cars. Neftali also liked home remodeling, billiards, cooking, and dominoes. He was known as being a big practical joker.  Neftali was devoted to his family, enjoyed helping people and making new friends. As a devout Christian, he loved to share the gospel and sing and play guitar to praise God.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2022 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Rev. Israel Santiago officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date in Milwaukee, WI.

Tim was the oldest boy of five, and second in the birth order of 10 siblings total: Denise Hughes, Paulette Thibault, David Thibault, Janine Merrill, Danny Thibault, Kathleen Sheley, Terry Thibault, Jenny Thibault and Jeff Thibault. He is survived by his two daughter-like nieces, Courtney & Jenna, two children and countless additional nieces and nephews.   Tim was a great man with a wealth of knowledge. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and worked at Mid-City Supply Co., Inc., in Michigan City as their HVAC Specialist for over 18 years. Tim had a sterling reputation within the heating and cooling industry and approached the opportunity to help others with kindness and respect. He had a passion for his customers and would do whatever it took to take care of their needs (even if it meant bucking the system every now and then). When not hard at work, Tim enjoyed golfing, fishing and general banter with this friends and fellow colleagues. Tim had a great sense of humor and was a stranger to no one.   Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

Patricia Ann Bergren - September 06, 1936 - February 19, 2022

Obituary Preview: Patricia Ann Bergren (née Dille) passed peacefully Saturday, February 19, 2022, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. A lifelong resident of Chesterton, she was 85 years old.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Robert Bergren; her daughters, Aimee Bergren and Christina (Craig) Thelen; her grandchildren, JJ (fiancé Ericka) Jablonski, Melanie (James) Randall, Lily Jablonski, Miles Jablonski, and Eliza Thelen; great-grandchildren, Amelia, Penelope, Blake, Brooklynn, and Brayden; as well as her siblings, Dennis Dille and Diane Rinker.  In death Patty joins her parents, John and Myrtle Dille, and her brother John Dille.

A small business owner, Patty was a longtime member of Chesterton’s business community.  In 1970, at the age of 34, she opened a women’s clothing boutique, The Pacesetter, which was later renamed The House of Berggren.  She ran the boutique for 50 years.  On any given day, you could find her at the store, dressed in the latest fashion out of Chicago, helping women look and feel their best.  When a husband dropped in looking for gifts, Patty could always tell him what dress or earrings his wife had her eye on the last time she was in the store.

Patty was smart, driven, and tough as nails. She was a Dille which meant that she was as stubborn as the day is long.  It also meant that when someone needed something, she was there with no questions asked, doing twice what was necessary. She instilled her strong work ethic in her daughters, who went on to own their own businesses. She paved the way for women to live the lives they were called to live, even if those lives were outside of the expected social norms.

Patty loved musicals, Christmas, sitting by the pool (but not getting in it), reading, cleaning, speeding, riding her bike, her beloved dog Opal, butter pecan ice cream, needling her husband (with love), and songs from the green hymnal. She was an accomplished bowler and proud member of the Sigma Alpha Sorority.  She absolutely adored her grandchildren and played a big part in raising them.  Days with Grandma Patty always included a game of baseball in the big yard and reading unlimited books at bedtime.

Above all, Patty was a committed Christian.  Her love of Jesus colored everything she did.  Her faith wasn’t shown through grand gestures.  She lived it in the small things she did faithfully over the course of 86 years.  The ripple effect of her actions, done with uncommon humility, cannot be measured.  She made a difference in the lives of her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and customers.  If you knew her you were better for it.

Her family takes comfort knowing that Patty was received into the open arms of her Heavenly Father and is now laughing and retelling old stories with her parents and brother, in her new body, smoking a Pall Mall, and drinking a black cup of coffee.   Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at Augsburg Lutheran Church, 100 N. Mineral Springs Rd., Porter, IN, on Saturday, March 26, 2022.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m.  After the service there will be a luncheon held in the Fellowship Hall.
