Ryo Shishido - June 19, 1917 - June 17, 2023

Departed: 06/17/2023 (Mountain View)
Obituary Preview: Ryo Shishido Resident of Sunnyvale June 1917 – June 2023 Ryo Shishido’s fantastic life ended on June 17, 2023, only 2 days before her 106th birthday!
Ryo (Kakuta) was born and raised in Fukushima, Japan. She married Zensaku Shishido, also from Fukushima, in 1940 and immigrated with him to the Philippines. She was almost killed when the WWII started and Philippines became the battleground between the U. S. and Japanese forces! She had 4 children during this period but 2 did not survive the war. Her youngest son was born in 1947 after they returned to Fukushima, Japan. In 1955, the family immigrated to the U.S. under the Refugee Relief Act of 1952. They began their 2nd immigrant life on a strawberry farm in Morgan Hill. 5 years later, at age of 51, Zensaku became a very successful, self employed gardener. They lived briefly in Mtn. View and E. Palo Alto, then moved to their dream home in Sunnyvale in 1970. In her 50’s Ryo started taking a correspondence Shamisen class offered by the Fujimoto School of Shamisen in Tokyo, Japan. She loved it and excelled in her study, earning a rank of an instructor! It allowed her to have her own shamisen class and teach under the granted name of Fujimoto Hideyoshi. She was also a talented singer and dancer of Japanese folk music, and became immersed in the world of shamisen, Japanese folk music and Japanese American social life! She spent the next 35 years teaching shamisen and performing at numerous community events. These were her happiest years! She withdrew from her shamisen and Japanese social life after suffering a devastating hearing loss! After her beloved husband died, she insisted on living independently until age 98! She finally moved in with her daughter in Cupertino where she remained for 8 years! She was in a Japanese style care facility for 2 months when she contracted COVID from another resident and died 2 days before her 106the birthday. Her mind remained crystal clear and she was looking forward to her birthday party! We are all shocked that the COVID caused her “early” death long after the pandemic was declared over!
Ryo is survived by devoted children Eileen (Richard) Fujikawa, James Yoshinaga (Fumiye) Shishido and Hiroshi (Nazzi) Shishido; Grand children Russell Fujikawa, Wendy (Erick) Sugimura, Stephanie Alisa (Jason) Fisk, Grant Daisuke and Edwaed Yuji Shishido; Great grand children Lana and Emily Sugimura, Kimiko and Kenji Fisk. She has one younger sister and many nieces and nephews in Japan.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 26 at 3 PM at Mountain View Buddhist Temple, 575 North Shoreline Blvd., Mtn. View, CA 94043. Please be aware that masks are required for everyone attending the service.

Elizabeth Jeanne Doyle - October 17, 1924 - May 06, 2023

Departed: 05/06/2023 (Mountain View)
Obituary Preview: Elizabeth Jeanne Doyle (“Betsy” to her friends and family) died with family at her bedside on May 6, 2023, from complications of a December 2020 stroke. She was 98. Betsy was born in Salt Lake City on October 17, 1924, to parents Lyle Maxon Barker, a mining engineer from Iowa, and Isabel O’Neill, who started out teaching grade school in a one-room schoolhouse in Wisconsin. Betsy’s family moved to Arizona when she was still a toddler, where they lived in a succession of copper mining towns. The first was Clarkdale, home to the United Verde Copper Company where her father rose to superintendent of the smelting operation. Betsy loved the Arizona desert and had many tales of family adventures in the Verde Valley and neighboring Jerome, Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon. Those days in the desert inspired her love for startling sunsets, the night sky, her eye for color and design, and her life-long fascination with the moon, the weather, and wildlife. The family’s next stop was in Ajo, another small desert town where her father was manager of the town and the copper mine. There, Betsy attended Ajo High School, graduating as one of three co-valedictorians in 1942. She had grown into a real beauty and had many friends and admirers. She played clarinet in the high school band and piano at high school dances, aspiring at one time to be a concert pianist. She also marched as the drum majorette for the high school band and loved to swim and play tennis competitively. Betsy went first to college at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where she was selected as social chairwoman of her dorm and earned membership in The Spurs, a sophomore honor society. After one year, she joined her brother Art at Stanford in Palo Alto, California, where she stayed until the Navy moved Art to Southern California. Betsy was a resident of Casa Naranja in Lagunita Court and remembers fabulous meals on white tablecloths served by waiters in short-waisted black jackets. She was a busy coed, and particularly enjoyed marching with the Stanford band as their baton-twirling majorette. Betsy next transferred to Mills College, across the San Francisco Bay, graduating in 1946, and went to work as a secretary at UC San Francisco Medical School. She enjoyed life at the then-glamorous Residence Club for Women on Nob Hill. It was in San Francisco that she met her husband-to-be, John Justin Doyle. They married at Old Saint Mary’s Church in 1950 and shared a lifelong love of the Lord and commitment to their vibrant Catholic faith. In the years after John died, Betsy attended Bible Study Fellowship in Redwood City as well as Catholic Charismatic Bible Institutes and conventions. Betsy and John had five children, one of whom, Isabel, died shortly after birth. Betsy and John, who worked for 37 years in sales for IBM, moved from San Francisco to Sacramento (for five years), then to Seattle (two years), Spokane (six years), and back to the San Francisco Bay Area, where they remained. Betsy collected dear friends at each stop in her life, all of whom appreciated her kind selflessness, grace and lively sense of humor. John contracted Lou Gehrig’s disease and passed away in 1989, just days after their 39th wedding anniversary. In 2000, Betsy moved to The Terraces of Los Gatos, where she lived for almost twenty-three years. Her good friends and kind helpers at The Terraces filled her life with meaning and joy. Betsy’s younger siblings Art Barker and Rosemary Barker passed away in recent years. She is survived by her dear sister-in-law, Ruth Barker; her precious children, Mary Elizabeth Doyle (David Greenwood), Anne Marie Doyle-Shultz (Al Shultz), William M. Doyle, and John J. Doyle, Jr.; her treasured grandchildren John Patrick Doyle, Elizabeth Ann Anderson (Todd Anderson), Hannah Shea Doyle, and Caroline Hallanan Doyle; one very special great grandchild, Emerie Shea; and her wonderful nieces, Peggy Barker and Kathy Barker Hayes (Ken Hayes) and nephew, Neill Barker (Pam), and all of their children and grandchildren. Betsy has been a delight and a constant light in our lives. We will hold her memory close.

Dick graduated from Fort Cherry High School in McDonald, Pennsylvania, where he lettered in varsity wrestling and football. He then attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration. He was a letterman on the Pitt wrestling team and was a loyal member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. While at Pitt, Dick met the love of his life, Nan. Dick and Nan married after their graduation and then moved to California.
Dick worked for over thirty years in defense and government contracting both in corporate management and in consulting. During this time, he also earned his MBA degree from Golden Gate University. One of Dick’s proudest achievements in his career was the formation of 3Wedge, a California LLC, as the Founder and President. His concept and ideas for a golf application on the Palm Pilot finally emerged into a trademarked software product called ultraCaddie, The Ultimate Golfing Companion. Many of his friends will remember Dick as the “ultimate golfing companion.” The most important feature to him was the live multiple game betting capability. Dick was a pioneer in the golf technology industry. Now, the USGA allows electronic devices to be used during competitions. 3Wedge was eventually acquired by another software company.
Golf was not Dick’s pastime; it was his passion. It was on the golf course that he channeled his work ethic, competitive spirit, love of the outdoors, and effortless camaraderie into the game he loved. Dick was a Senior Club Champion, Match Play Champion and the Team Match Play and Scratch League Captain at Boulder Ridge Golf Club. He was also a previous member of Winchester Country Club and Shoreline Golf Links. Dick was also a champion pool player in the Silicon Valley pool league and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Dick was most proud of his two sons, Richard and Matthew. At every opportunity, he coached their basketball, football, and baseball teams. As they grew older, he was always their biggest supporter from the sideline. He was the best father and was always there for his boys whenever they needed him, anytime.
Dick is survived by his mother Dorothy, wife Nan, two sons, Richard and Matthew, grandson Michael, siblings and their spouses, James (Terry), Robert (Jennifer), Mary, Jean (Paul), Colleen (Steve) and Sean (Jeannine) and many other loved ones. He is predeceased by his father, James.

Departed: 03/27/2023 (Mountain View)
Obituary Preview: Lily L. Loh November 2, 1941 – March 27, 2023
Lily Lee Loh went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 27, 2023.
A devoted mother, wife, sister, aunt, daughter, and friend, Lily was known for her fun spirit and love of life, faithful prayer, and gracious service to others.
Born on November 2, 1941, in Shanghai, China, Lily was the eighth child and youngest daughter of Geraldo and Mary Lee. Growing up, Lily was a good student, enjoyed knitting, and playing the piano. In 1948, her family moved to Hong Kong to escape communism, and later to Brazil. Lily came to the United States to study at St. Mary’s College and then transferred to Purdue University. She received her Master’s degree at Cornell University, where she met her husband George Loh. They were married on January 20, 1968.
After teaching fashion retailing at Cornell for two years, Lily became a fashion designer for Vanity Fair in New York City. Her daughter Christina was born in 1971. They moved to San Diego in 1973 and welcomed their son Derek in 1977.
Lily was a joyful, skillful chef and enjoyed teaching cooking classes out of her home and across the country. She wrote the cookbook, Lily Loh’s Chinese Seafood and Vegetables, had her own cooking show “Quick Woking” and appeared on CNN cooking shows. She also led a very active lifestyle – skiing, tennis, camping and boogie boarding when she was younger – and doing daily workouts and enjoying Zumba and line dancing as she got older.
Later in life, Lily led a Christian Healing Ministry in San Diego and prayed with many people. Miracles and healing happened almost every time when she prayed with the sick. After George retired, they decided to join the Peace Corps and served in Slovakia, where Lily helped start hospice and raised money to build a chapel.
Lily faced many challenges in her life, including TB, cancer and the sudden death of her husband. But her vibrant faith sustained her and, every time she prayed to God, He always assured her that everything would be okay. She shared her love of prayer by penning two books, Listen to God Daily and Listen to Jesus Daily.
Lily's family was very important to her, and she cherished the yearly family reunions with her ten siblings and their spouses for 25 years. They had many exciting cruises to Europe, Asia, and Central and South America. In 2019, she moved to Palo Alto, CA, where she enjoyed spending her golden years with her sister Helen at the Channing House retirement community.
Lily is survived by many loving family members, including her mother-in-law, Grace Loh, seven of her siblings (Benson, Daniel, Helen, Roberto, Dora, Thomas, and Jackson), her children (Christina and Derek and Serena, daughter-in-law) and grandchildren (Gabriel, Jacob, Julien, and Dominic), and many nieces and nephews. In her memoir, Amazing and Joyful Journey, Lily shared: “God has graced me abundantly throughout my entire life. Every time I think of all those amazing journeys I have had, my heart overflows with joy. I am forever grateful for all that God has done for me. Most of all, I thank God for my faith, and for all the blessings He has showered upon me throughout the years. He gave me a purpose in life, and I knew that He loved me from the moment when I was conceived in my mother’s womb. I look forward to the day when I will be with God forever, singing praises with all the angels and saints for eternity in Heaven.”
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday April 22, 2023, 10am at Lily’s last home church, St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 751 Waverley St., Palo Alto, CA 94301, with a reception immediately following at Channing House, 850 Webster St., Palo Alto, CA 94301. The burial will be held Sun, April 23, 11am at Woodlawn Memorial Park - 1000 El Camino Real, Colma, CA 94014. Please RSVP if you are planning on attending the post-Mass Reception and/or post-Burial Luncheon. christina.c.loh@outlook.com or text 530.545.8903
Flowers may be received at the church. As an alternative to flowers, Lily suggested a donation to her church in San Diego St. James Church (Eudist Priests) or the charitable organization of her choice EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network, Inc). “You will show me the path to life, abounding joy in your presence.” (Psalm 16:11)

Carlo Marenco - October 26, 1934 - March 21, 2023

Departed: 03/21/2023 (Mountain View)
Obituary Preview: Carlo passed away peacefully with his family at his side this past Tuesday morning, March 21st. His health had been declining for the past year, but his love for life, family, good food and wine never diminished, Carlo was born in San Francisco where he lived until the age of 12. His parents, Charlie and Lee owned several businesses in the city, one of which was a ravioli factory, Torino Ravioli. Sleeping to the white noise of the pasta machine and generally covered in flour while sleeping in a wooden box, was Carlo's introduction to the wonderful Italian food he loved to eat and make throughout his life. In 1946 the family moved to a 10 acre parcel of land in Palo Alto where his parents opened a Nursery called Marenco's Nursery on the corner of Alma and San Antonio. During this time Carlo would attend and graduate from Bellarmine College Prep, class of 1952, and later Menlo Business College. After college his parents needed help in running the nursery and it was here that he met the love of his life, Rose Bo, while delivering plants to her parents house. The two married in March 1959 after Carlo served two years in the Navy in Hawaii. They settled in Sunnyvale where Carlo worked at the family grocery store, Bo's Market until 1968. After the market sold Carlo went into sales for Pellegrini Brothers wine distributors where he learned a lot about our state's expanding wine industry and developed a passion for good food and wine. While working as a wine salesman Carlo realized that the south bay area was lacking quality lunch spots where one could grab a quick meal. Thus the Friendly Franciscan Deli was born. As with any restaurant the hours were long but the work was exciting and many lasting friendships were formed with staff and customers from 1978 to 1986. Eventually the long hours did catch up with Carlo and Rose so the shop was sold and the two took a much needed trip to Italy. Upon returning he obtained his real estate license and worked in the Sunnyvale area for over 15 years. Over the years Carlo pursued his love for the outdoors through hunting, skiing, foraging for mushrooms and golf. Once he "retired" he really had time to develop his cooking, sourdough bread baking and of course wine making skills. Needless to say he was never bored.
Carlo is survived by his wife, Rose, of 64 years, son Marco Marenco, (Cathi), daughter Marina Marenco (Bill) deceased, and grandson, Jim Marenco, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Donations can be made in honor of Carlo to the charity or Non-Profit of your choice. Please view/sign guestbook: cusimanocolonial.com
