Mary Ellen Morocco - September 11, 1944 - October 29, 2020

Departed: 10/29/2020 (Lowellville)
Obituary Preview: Mary Ellen Morocco passed peacefully and unexpectedly in her sleep at her home on Thursday, October 29, 2020.  She was born September 11, 1944, in Youngstown, a daughter of Dennis and Irene (Mickler) Joyce and had been a lifelong area resident. Raised in Lowellville, she was a 1962 graduate of Lowellville High School.  She married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, William J. Morocco on September 18, 1965. They resided in Lowellville where they raised their children. She was a loving mother and later a wonderful grandmother. Her grandchildren and great-granddaughter, who affectionately called her "Nunnie” or “Hey, Nun!” are so grateful for the blessing of her as their grandmother. In fact, she was everyone’s Nunnie - she had such a big heart that anyone that knew her, knew she was their Nunnie, too. She made everyone feel special. Her smile could light up a room and warm any heart. She loved a good joke and a funny story; she was known for her big laugh and her even bigger heart. She never met a stranger and even if she did, they quickly became fast friends.   She will be deeply missed. Family was the most important thing for Mary Ellen, and being a wife, mother, and Nunnie was her greatest joy.  She was the heart of her family.  She was active in all her children and grandchildren’s lives and was always available to go on an adventure, take a shopping spree, keep a secret, and solve a problem - all while providing a buffet of cookies, candies, and snacks. She loved taking care of her yard (especially riding the lawnmower and occasionally getting stuck in the mud), reading a good murder-mystery novel, knowing all the words to every Law and Order episode, and binge-watching Investigation Discovery in a cozy pair of pajamas. She loved animals, especially her dogs that have passed the Rainbow Bridge. She enjoyed spoiling her dogs Brinkley, Lulu, Lucy, and (half of) Buddha. She was a great and loyal friend.  She was deeply devoted to those who she loved; she helped provide care and comfort to many friends and relatives when they were in need.   She was an active member of Our Lady of Holy Rosary Church in Lowellville; she was also a member of Ladies Mt. Carmel Society, regularly attended rosary prayer group, and served her community as a volunteer at the church’s food pantry.  Her passion for serving others drove her commitment to volunteering at Our Community Soup Kitchen every Tuesday and at the Dorothy Day House whenever she was asked.  She loved her time spent there and always came home with a story to tell about the friends she had made while volunteering.  It was truly her calling for these past few years. Mary Ellen is survived by her children, Kimberly (Rich) Pecchia of Campbell; Sandra of Struthers, William of Lowellville, and Patrick (Alicia) of McKinney, Texas; seven grandchildren, Alexa Morocco of Lakewood, Anthony Jacob Carson of Struthers, Marissa and Anthony Pecchia of Campbell, and Aiden, Landon, and Avery Morocco of McKinney, TX; one great-granddaughter, Spencer of New Middletown; brother Dennis Joyce of Austintown; brother-in-law Pat Morocco (Norma) of Vista, CA; sisters-in-law Helen Morocco of Las Vegas, NV, Dorothy Soltis of Cleveland, OH, Nerina Morocco of Lowellville, and Mary Jane (Michael) Prestonise of Oceanside, CA; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, close cousins, and dear life-long friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband, William; her parents; her sister, Patricia; her mother- and father-in-law, Anna and Joseph Morocco; her beloved grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins; brothers-in-law Anthony, Robert, and John Morocco and Michael Soltis; and sisters-in-law Shirley, Norie and Rose Morocco.  She missed them so much and we know that she is happily drinking coffee and gossiping with them in Heaven. Family and friends will be received on Thursday, November 5, 2020, from 9:30 - !0:30 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Lowellville, where a prayer service will begin at 10:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church. Interment will follow at Holy Rosary Cemetery. Due to COVID-19, we kindly ask that all guests, whose health allows, wear a mask, and follow the 6-foot rule.  Friends and family who are unable to attend in person will be provided a link so that they may be able to virtually attend the services. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide an opportunity for loved ones to express their condolences.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention the cause of death, funeral arrangements, and any charities or organizations where donations can be made in lieu of flowers.

Who writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or cremation service may offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary. Professional writers or journalists may also be hired to craft a more elaborate or personalized obituary.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly, depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Traditional newspaper obituaries are usually concise, ranging from 100 to 200 words. Online obituaries can be longer, often up to 500 words or more, allowing for a more detailed and personal tribute.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos of the deceased. Some newspapers may also accept photos for print publication. Including photos can make the obituary more personal and help readers connect with the person being remembered.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you'll typically need to contact their obituary department directly. They will provide guidance on word count, formatting, and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication fee.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Newspaper obituaries can range from $50 to $500 or more, while online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This allows them to have control over how they're remembered and can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life.

What is a self-written obituary called?

A self-written obituary is sometimes referred to as a "living obituary" or "autobit." It's a unique opportunity for individuals to tell their own story and leave a lasting legacy.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived newspapers or microfilm copies.

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you've found an old obituary that you'd like to republish, be sure to check the original publication's copyright policies first. You may need permission or have to pay a fee to reprint the obituary.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement that simply states the fact of someone's death, without providing additional biographical information. Death notices are often used when there isn't enough time or resources to prepare a full obituary.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death and provides basic information about the person's life. A eulogy is a speech or written tribute that celebrates the person's life and shares personal anecdotes and memories.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or quotes can help capture the personality of the deceased and bring comfort to those who are grieving.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If you're unsure about sharing certain details about the deceased's life, such as their cause of death or personal struggles, consider consulting with family members or close friends. It's essential to be respectful and tactful when sharing sensitive information.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased's memory and support a cause they cared about.

How do I correct errors in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or online platform where the obituary was published as soon as possible. They will guide you through their correction process and make any necessary changes.

Can I create an online memorial page instead of an obituary?

What are some alternative ways to share news of a death?

In addition to traditional newspaper obituaries, you can share news of a death through social media posts, email notifications, phone calls, or text messages. You can also use online platforms specifically designed for sharing news of a passing.

How long does it take for an online obituary to be published?

The time it takes for an online obituary to be published varies depending on the platform and their review process. Some online platforms publish immediately, while others may take several hours or days.

Can I edit an online obituary after it's been published?

Policies regarding editing online obituaries vary by platform. Some may allow edits at any time, while others may have restrictions or require additional fees.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration that an online obituary remains available depends on the platform's policies. Some platforms keep obituaries active indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

Can I request removal of an online obituary?
