James "Doc" Johnson - November 20, 1939 - April 24, 2024

Jim passed away peacefully on April 24, 2024 at age 84 at Bedford Specialty Care from complications with Alzheimer's. Doc was born on November 20, 1939 in Burlington, Iowa to Dorothy (Behtz) Johnson and Vernon Johnson. He graduated High School from Burlington, IA High School.
Doc then enrolled at Iowa State University, Ames, IA in the school of Veterinary Medicine graduating with a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1963. After graduation he enlisted in US Army's Veterinary Corp, as a lieutenant and leaving as a captain. He was stationed in Spokane, Washington and was in charge of meat inspection for the Army.
When his tour of duty was completed he came back to Iowa and practiced in Mt. Ayr, Iowa for 4 years. In June of 1970 Doc entered into a partnership in Bedford with Dr. Jim Lucas who was a classmate in college.
In 1984 Jim began working for the Iowa Department of Agriculture for SW Iowa and served in that capacity for 25 years. His duties included information to farmers about new regulations, examining herds, and much more.
Doc was a member of the Bedford Golf Club and enjoyed many rounds of golf with his golfing buddies. He was an avid fisherman, deer and turkey hunter. Jim was recognized at half time of a Bedford football game as the Voice of the Bedford Bulldogs for announcing the home games for a number of years. Jim also received the ISAA Mo Kelly Award for public address announcing in 2006. In 2015 Coach Kirk Ferentz awarded Jim the Iowa Coaches Association Distinguished Service Award on the University of Iowa football field with Coach Bob McCoy, who had nominated Jim.
Jim and Kathryn L. (Kay Hansen) Johnson were married in September 1962. Jim is survived by his son, Steve, of Bedford, his daughter, Jill, of Urbandale, granddaughters Erin Daube and great grand daughter Avrie, Grandchildren, Alexis Johnson, Caleb Johnson and Micah Johnson. Also, his niece Kari Willson and many other cousins.
Preceding Jim in death were: his son Mike of Bedford, his sister, Shirley Willson and her husband Bill Willson.

Laton Carl Goodson was born April 14, 1932 and passed away April 17, 2024 while a resident at the Cresthaven Care Facility in Creston, IA.
He was the youngest son of George and Jessie (Hern) Goodson of Ravenwood, Missouri.
He spent his childhood years working hard on the family farm. He attended country school and graduated from Ravenwood High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged.
On April 10, 1955 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Wilma Louise Gray.
This marital union was blessed with six children. - Debbie (spouse Jeff Beason) of Lenox, Iowa, - Carl (spouse Wanda Goodson) of Corning, Iowa - Ron (spouse Pam Goodson) of Ankeny, Iowa - Alan (spouse Lori Goodson) of Lenox, Iowa - Dave (spouse Jenny Goodson) of Creston, Iowa
- Linda (spouse Tim Bean) of Roy, Utah.
Laton and Louise spent their entire lives associated with farm life. In their earliest years they raised hogs, calves, and milked dairy cows. As the children became adults and left home one by one, so did the milk cows. The last milk cows left the farm almost immediately after the last child moved out.
Left to share his memories are his six children, several grandchildren, Laton's older brother Charles Goodson and a few cousins.
He will be missed.

Donald Lee Barrett II was born on November 2, 1970 in Omaha, NE the son of Phyllis (Schrodt) and Donald Barrett. He grew up attending school in Council Bluffs and Bedford. He participated in football at Bedford while he was in high school.
Donnie worked as a dishwasher for many years while living in Council Bluffs. Donnie enjoyed many activities throughout his life. Including, listening to music especially the Beetles, visiting with family, and watching the Pittsburg Steelers. Donnie was extremely good with dates and numbers. If he knew your birthday he never forgot it. Donnie was a faithful member of the Sons of the American Legion Post in Bedford.
Preceding Donnie in death are his parents, Phyllis and Donald Barrett and sister, Angela Barrett.
Left to cherish Donnie's memory are his sister, Lorraine (Bill) Gale; nieces and nephews, Tim Gale, Cassie (Tyler) Wagner, Justin Gale, Joshua Gale, and Katie Barrett; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Jean Marie (Akers) Beemer was born September 7, 1932, on a farm in Taylor County, Iowa. She was welcomed into the home by her parents, Frank Abram Akers and Jessie Evelyn (Lacox) Akers along with a brother, Francis. Jean attended Gravity School where she met Dick Beemer. They were united in marriage on December 23, 1947. Together they began a lifetime of farming east of Gravity. To this union, two daughters, Dixie and Diane, were born.
In 1960, they moved into Gravity where she worked part-time at Lovitt's Grocery Store, Bedford sewing factories and in the Bedford Sale Barn lunch room. She enjoyed camping, sewing and reading. Her biggest joy was spending time with her grandkids and great-grandkids. A few years after retirement they moved to Corning where they lived until she moved to Vintage Park in Lenox.
Left to cherish Jean’s memory is her daughter, Diane Sheffield and husband Scott of Gravity, Iowa; six grandchildren, Troy Weeda and wife Jacque; Kristie Sapp and husband Eric; Cory Weeda and wife Carrie, all of Lee's Summit, Missouri; Todd Sheffield and wife Jen of Pella, Iowa; Trent Sheffield and wife Angie of Albia, Iowa; and Tracy Gerlits and husband Jesse of Des Moines, Iowa; thirteen great-grandchildren, Dani Dey and husband Mathew; Trey Weeda; Mikhayla Land and husband Ryan; Paige Maggio and husband Phillip; Brianne Ham and husband Spencer; Katelyn George and husband Landon; Travis, Adam, Olivia and Brooklyn Sheffield; Jaden, Madelyn and Abigail Gerlits; and one great-great-grandson, Rhett Maggio; along with m any other family members and friends.
Preceding Jean in death are her parents, Frank and Jessie Akers; father and mother-in-laws, Hudson and Mary Beemer; brother-in-law, Dean Beemer; brothers and sisters-in-law; Francis and Bonnie Akers, a nephew Wayne Akers; her loving husband Dick Beemer in April of 2018; and her daughter and son-in-law, Dixie and Roy Weeda.

Jerome 'Jerry' Lee Mauderly was born October 12, 1941 in Nodaway Township, Taylor County, Iowa, the son of Corwin Emery Mauderly and Jean Muriel (King) Mauderly. He grew up in a family of one brother and four sisters attending rural schools, graduating from the Bedford High School with the Class of 1960. After graduation he entered the United States Army serving three years in Hawaii. Upon his honorable discharge he moved to South Dakota where he worked in the mining industry, returning to Taylor County where he began farming with his family. Jerry was united in marriage to Carolyn Kay Young in 1967. Jerry and Carolyn called the farm their home just west of Bedford. The couple raised two children, Douglas and Sarah.
Jerry was a farmer at heart and enjoyed both row crop and raising cattle. He was known as a hunter, but everyone knew he loved fishing most of all! Many times he would stock fishing ponds across Taylor County, with a 'lifetime of fishing rights'! Together he and Carolyn enjoyed camping, square dancing, and playing cards. His loving wife Carolyn passed away in December of 2019. He was so very blessed to live in his farm home up until the very end, passing away surrounded by those he loved and cared for.
Left to cherish Jerry’s memory are his children, Douglas Mauderly of Bedford; and Sarah Popelka and husband Michael; two grandchildren, Claire (18) and Sam (15) Popelka, all of Seattle, Washington; his four siblings, Karen Scalf and husband Barry of Bedford, Iowa; Donna Melvin and husband Terry of Blockton, Iowa; Diane Scotten and husband Ed of Bedford, Iowa; Wade Mauderly and wife Ramah, of Bedford, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Ron Young and wife Barbara of Davenport, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Linda Weeber and husband John of Lenox, Iowa; and Lois Thompson of Shenandoah, Iowa; along with many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Preceding Jerry in death are his parents, Corwin and Jean Mauderly; his loving wife Carolyn Mauderly; and one sister, Phyllis Traster (Jack).
Jerry served his country and his community.

She attended Skinner School for 1 year, Fairview School for 1 year before moving to the large Guss farm with her parents where she attended Weston school, riding her pony each day.
In 1938 she moved with her parents one mile west of Bedford, Iowa. She finished her education in 1943 from the Bedford High School with a normal training certificate. One week after her 18 th birthday, she started her teaching career.
While teaching near Gravity, Iowa she met Drexel Keith who become her husband three months later June 15, 1946. Vivian continued teaching until their son Randy was born in 1952. Drexel and Vivian moved to a farm next door to her parents in 1954. In 1955, a daughter Kay Lynne joined the family.
Vivian helped her husband with the produce business for several years. In 1970 she worked for the National Farmers Organization in Corning, Iowa for 8 years as head of the Microfilm department. That fulfilled a life long dream.
Following Drexel’s passing in 1991, she filled her hours with sewing for others. In 1993, she left the farm and moved into Bedford. In 1997, with the help of Louise Weller, she organized the Forever Young group for senior single persons. This was her pride and joy.
Proceeding her in death were her parents and her husband.
Surviving her are Randy Keith and his wife Linda of Mt Pleasant, Iowa, Kay Lynne Sheffield and her husband Greg of Winterset, Iowa. Her five grandchildren, Brian & Kristen Sheffield, Kim & Morgan Simmons, Casey & Staci Sheffield, Erin & Keith Musser and Alex & Courtney Achen and 15 great grandchildren. Along with her life long Sunday morning coffee friend, Diane Baker, who she loved so much.
Vivian will be missed by her loving family and friends.

Phyllis Irene Barrett was born on May 27, 1951 in Clarinda, Iowa the daughter of Lewis Charles Schrodt and Evelyn Lorraine (Harris) Schrodt. She grew up attending rural school west of Bedford, graduating from Bedford High School with the Class of 1969. After graduation she worked various places, she ended up in Council Bluffs where she met Donald (Butch) Barrett, the couple were united in marriage in May of 1970. To this union three children were born to bless her life, Donald (Donnie), Lorraine and Angela. Phyllis was blessed to raise her granddaughter Katie.
Phyllis moved to Clarinda where she attend Iowa Western Community College graduating with her LPN Degree in 1992. She returned to Council Bluffs where she worked at Risen Son Nursing Home and North Crest Care Center. Butch passed away in August of 2003, and Phyllis returned to live in Bedford near her family. She worked for Bedford Manor Nursing Home and Imagine the Possibilities. Phyllis loved her family . . . and she was a planner! She cherished planning family gatherings and she would have them frequently. She really did not need a reason to plan time together, whether they were 'sister trips' or getting together for snacks or just playing cards or hosting picnics. Phyllis loved the ocean and the sound of the waves! She traveled from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico! On one of her trips she stated: "Stop, listen and hear these waves. After I'm gone, when ever you hear the sound of those waves, please remember me and how much I loved the Ocean!"
Left to cherish Phyllis’ memory are her children, Donnie Barrett of Shenandoah, Iowa; Lorraine Gale and husband Bill of Woodbine, Iowa; six siblings, Scharry Hipsley of Bedford, Iowa; Karen Herzberg and husband Everett of New Market, Iowa; Kay Dukes and husband Leroy of Bedford, Iowa; Janice Schrodt-Campbell of Bedford, Iowa; Lewis Schrodt and wife Brenda of Clearmont, Missouri; and John Schrodt and wife Stephanie of Deerbrook, Wisconsin; a brother-in-law, Dale Fearnot of Kenesaw, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Tim, Justin, Josh, Cassie and Katie; nine great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Preceding Phyllis in death are her parents Lewis and Evelyn Schrodt; her husband Butch Barrett; her daughter Angela Barrett in 2022; two sisters, Pauline Fearnot and Cindy Croson; a brother, Charles Edgar, at infancy; two brothers-in-law, Lonnie Croson and Mike Hipsley.

Diana was preceded in death by her parents, Dominique and Effie Broussard; adopted sister, Margaret Trahan and ex-husband, Henry Hebert. Helen Louise Troncin, age 98, passed away on Friday, February 16, 2024, at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda, IA, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on May 3, 1925, in Taylor County, IA, Helen was the daughter of Wayne and Minnie (Graybill) Hensley. She shared her childhood with her older brother Harold and her younger brother Lynn, growing up on a farm in the Bedford/Hopkins area and attending rural schools. Jerry Hensley, her nephew joined their immediate family and was raised as a brother.
On May 3, 1942, she married Kenneth Troncin in Savannah, MO, and they had two sons, Ralond Dean, and Richard Wayne. They enjoyed country living and working south of Bedford on their family farm. Kenneth and Helen loved spending time together during their 64 years of marriage.
Helen was a wonderful cook and had beautiful flower gardens. Beyond the responsibilities of the farm, she found joy in expressing her creativity through painting, knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Kenneth and Helen had fun bowling and square dancing over the years. They shared the excitement of buying and selling antiques and traveling to antique shows across the country. Many customers visited their farm where they had an antique shop. Helen moved to town after their farmhouse was destroyed by a fire in 2012.
Preceding Helen in death are her husband, Kenneth; parents and in-laws; son Richard; grandson, Michael; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Betty Hensley; and brother, Lynn Hensley.
Left to cherish Helen's memory are her son, Ralond (Ruby) Troncin; grandchildren, Michelle Troncin and her husband Kenny Jason, Rick Troncin, and Troy Troncin; sister-in-law, Marie Hensley; nephew Jerry (Londa) Hensley; great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
May God grant comfort and strength to those who mourn Helen's passing. Her love, creativity, and family devotion will remain forever.
Helen has generously donated her body to the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Science in Des Moines, IA. A private family interment will be held at a later date.

Beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, Joachim “Joe” Pittelkow was born February 6, 1954, in Atlantic, Iowa. The son of late Dora and Wilhelm Pittelkow, Joe grew up on the family farm in Bedford, Iowa with his sisters.
Joe was a veteran of the US Navy and served on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga. After the Navy he briefly lived in Norfolk, VA where his daughter Erica was born. Joe worked in computer programming for companies in the Midwest, including for the Royals, where he originally met Janet Milone as a colleague and friend, but it would not be until years later that they reconnected and became partners. He also lived in Hawaii and California before retiring in Lee’s Summit, MO.
Joe loved his dogs and was a huge fan of the KC Chiefs. He loved music - especially the Beatles, watching movies and enjoying a good burger. Joe is survived by his partner Janet Milone of Lee’s Summit, MO; his daughter Erica Lynch and husband Matthew Lynch and grandchildren Veronica Lynch and Michael Lynch, of Los Angeles, CA; his sister Hanna Pittelkow of Sioux City, IA and daughter Annie O’Dell and children Ashley of Maryville, MO and Jeremy of Sioux City, IA, and son
Paul Pittelkow of Sioux City, IA and children LaToshia and Derek Pittelkow of Des Moines, IA and Heather of OK; his sister Heidi Poppa and husband Larry of Bedford, IA, and daughter Lori Welch and husband Rande and children Eric and wife Kayla of Chariton, IA, and Cameron and Kelle of Bedford, IA and son David Woods and fiancée Andrea Wisely of Independence, MO and daughter Adalyn; his sister Ingrid Pittelkow of Bedford, IA; his sister Betty Wilcoxson and Don Devereaux of Bedford, IA; niece Connie Ward and husband Mike, along with many other relatives and friends.
Preceding Joachim in death are his brother Wilfried in 2006 and Wilfried’s wife Sue in 2007, and sister Marijana in 1945.

Freddie David Strough was born November 18, 1940, at home in Nodaway County, Missouri to Freddie Richard Strough and Flossie Belle (McElroy) Strough. At a young age, David and family moved from northwest Missouri to a farm in Taylor county, Iowa. As stories have it, David and his three brothers spent years of mischief and working hard as they grew up on the family farm. He attended country school and graduated from New Market Community High School in 1960.
David married his high school sweetheart Dwila Sue Pratt on March 17, 1961 at the United Methodist Church in New Market, Iowa.
After high school David worked on a ranch in Nebraska, with family friends Harold and Gail Glasgow. David returned from the ranch and farmed for 23 years in Taylor county, Iowa. He was constantly busy and on the move. He had a knack for constructing just about anything that was needed for the farm, out of whatever materials he had available. David then worked 19 years for NSK Corporation in Clarinda, Iowa.
David and Sue built their forever home in 2004, on their 79 acres and put the land in prairie and native grasses. David and Sue spent many enjoyable hours searching for and identifying wild flowers they had planted. David enjoyed the outdoors. He spent time gardening, bird watching and hunting for Indian artifacts with the family. David enjoyed making furniture for their home. He discovered that he liked photography and took many pictures of the sunrises and sunsets that they enjoyed seeing each day.
David liked spending time with his brothers and also enjoyed taking numerous trips around the United States with Sue and her sister and brother-in-law, Ethel and Dennis Leek.
David may be best remembered for his quick playful wit and quiet demeanor.
David was proceeded in death by his parents, Fred and Flossie; and brothers, Robert and Donald Strough.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 62 years, Sue Strough of Gravity, Iowa; brother, Jim (Judy) Strough of Shenandoah, Iowa; sister-in-laws, Cheryl Strough of New Market, Iowa and Chris Strough of Clarinda, Iowa; children, Randal (Sharon) Strough of Boonville, Missouri, Peggy (Mark) Driscoll of Clarinda, Iowa, Brian (Angie) Strough of Fulton, Missouri; grandchildren, Zach Strough, Andrew (Jessica) Strough, Hunter (Caila) Driscoll, Teal Driscoll, Scott Strough, Jared (Reagan) Strough, Kelsi Lindemann, Cody (Sarah) Lindemann and Colton (Maddie) Lindemann; 9 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

James Alan Schrodt was born August 4, 1977 to James and Kathy (Cordell) Schrodt. He passed away on February 6, 2024 at the age of 46, surrounded by his family.
Alan graduated from Bedford Community High School Class of 1995. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice.
Alan served in the United States Army from 2000 to 2004. He served 2 tours, one in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and in Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom.) He was in the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles - Rakkasans Division. Alan received the Quilt of Valor along with his father, James Schrodt, on March 19, 2022.
Alan was united in marriage to Beth Hutson on February 10, 2004 in Clarksville, Tennessee. The couple resided there until he was honorably discharged from the service. They then made their home in Bedford to raise their family.
Alan was a hard worker, after serving in the United States Army, he worked 17 years at the Clarinda Correctional Facility, before deciding to transition to a slower paced life at home. He wanted to spend more time at home with family and working on the acreage. Alan's wife and children were his whole life. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, soon to be grandpa and friend. Family meant everything to him. Alan made sure to instill work ethic and honesty to his children. He also taught them to stand up for themselves, work hard for everything you get and be proud of your accomplishment. That way you will appreciate it more!
Alan enjoyed taking trips with his family, camping, fishing, hunting, trapping, raising and caring for his cows, calves, chickens, pigs, goats, dogs and cats. He loved the annual soup supper and playing "Royale Rummy" which he won!! Alan enjoyed helping his son's Garrett and Lucas with their projects and working on cars, listening and guiding Braelyn and Layla when they asked for his advice and helping his Mom and Dad when they needed help. Alan also instilled the importance of family reunions, family time and showing respect to others in his children.
Left to cherish Alan's memory are his wife, Beth Schrodt; children, Braelyn, Garrett, Layla and Lucas; parents, James and Kathy Schrodt; siblings, Kandy (Mike) Beattie and Kerri (Seth) Rickabaugh; mother and father in-law, Sheri and Joe Hutson; in-laws, Kari (Jim) McMichael, Betty (Zakk) Wilcox and Ginny (John) Hutson; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
In Alan's younger days he was known in town by "The Dukes of Hazzard" horn and the group of friends, "The Good Ole Boys", who shared his interest of those times. Alan impacted the lives of many. He will truly be missed by all those that knew and loved him.

Evelyn June (Mumm) McMillin was born on October 16, 1933 to Edward Mumm and Olive (Heggs) Mumm, in Bedford, Iowa. Evelyn passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family at Bedford Nursing and Specialty Care on January 30, 2024.
On August 18, 1951, she was united in marriage to Francis Jay McMillin. To this union four children were sent to bless their home, Diane, Sandra, Steven, and Don. The couple made their home in Bedford and they worked together running the family trucking company with Evelyn helping schedule hauls and keeping the books. Evelyn also grew a large vegetable garden and flower garden each year. Evelyn's hobbies included crocheting, sewing and making dolls.
Evelyn enjoyed serving those that were in need. She worked as a home health aid for many years and it was a role she continued even after retiring. Evelyn spent countless hours volunteering at Bedford Nursing and Specialty Care reading to the residents, playing games, visiting and doing crafts. Evelyn was a strong and independent person, traits that allowed her to live on her own up until the past few years.
Evelyn's greatest pride and joy was her family. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Diane (Donald) Law, Sandra (Gene) Oxley, Steven (Michelle Dykman) McMillin, and Don (Laura Jackson) McMillin; grandchildren, Krista (Kyle) Chilcoat, Shanin (Dusty) Summers, Brandi (Shane) Clay, Jason (Tina) McMillin, Carmen (Michael) Perdew, Jessica (Evan) Rand, Michelle (Gavin) Vice and Jennifer (Jerrid) Fuehrer; 20 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Marilyn Hoops; along with many other relatives and friends.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Francis; parents, Edward and Olive Mumm; brother, Edward Mumm; brother-in-law, Leroy Hoops and grandson, Christopher Oxley.
Evelyn worked hard all of her life and will be remembered as a kind, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and friend. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Jacqueline Kay (Dressor) Larson was born in Effinham, Illinois on August 14, 1947 to Mike and Helen (Harmon) Dressor. Growing up she lived in Shenandoah, Iowa, Saint Charles, Missouri and Omaha, Nebraska with her family. When Jackie was 16 the family moved to Bellevue, Nebraska where she attended and graduated high school.
While in Bellevue she met the love of her life, John Larson. The couple was married June 17, 1967 in Bellvue. Two this union two children were born, Shannon and Marisa.
The couple moved to Utah and then Wyoming as John worked in the oil fields in the region. Jackie held various jobs through the years but her most important job was being a loving wife and mother to John, Shannon and Marisa. Jackie enjoyed doing crafts of all kinds, knitting, crocheting, reading and cooking.
Jackie's family was indeed her greatest joy. She enjoyed being with them whenever possible and sharing her love with them.
Preceding Jackie in death were her parents, Mike and Helen and grandson Dylan Larson.
