Sally Ginsberg Tannen - August 02, 1954 - April 23, 2024

Departed: 04/23/2024 (Burlington)
Obituary Preview: With profound sadness and grief, we share that our mother, Sally Ginsberg Tannen, died from lung cancer at the age of 69. Sally was the warmest, kindest, and most universally beloved person we knew. We are devastated that she left us too soon and grateful we were able to spend her final days holding her hands and telling her how much we loved her.
She leaves behind her husband Arnie, sister Anne, children Michael, Rob, Jon and Elizabeth, and grandchildren Grace, Stella, Nora, Cedar, Shepard, Ralph and Shirley.
Until recently, Sally was a lifelong New Yorker: she grew up in a Midtown East apartment with Anne and parents Susan and Stephen; their cousins, Mary and Nina, who happened to be the same age, lived next door. According to Mary, Sally was “the nicest of us four-the warmest and shiniest.” She and Anne attended the (now shuttered) New Lincoln School, where she was introduced to the values of progressive education that shaped her almost fifty year career in the field.
Sally knew from an early age that she wanted to teach, and received her Masters in early childhood from Bank Street College of Education in New York after majoring in English at Washington University in St. Louis.
Despite her deceptively mild demeanor, she had a lifelong passion for adventure. During college she led groups of young people on hiking and biking tours through the Alps, and her favorite part of school was the time she spent living with a family in rural England. During the forty-three years she and Arnie were married, they enjoyed abundant travel together.
In her mid-twenties, while teaching first grade at Village Community School, lifelong friends of her parents - Margie and Peter Rogatz - set her up on a blind date with our dad, Arnie, recently widowed and the father of three young boys. A year later, they were married. By all accounts everyone who knew Sally thought it was a crazy undertaking, and that if anyone could handle it, it was her. They were right about both. A few years later they had a daughter. Sally brought life, light and nurturing to the family.
So that she could work part time and spend more of her days being a mom, she stepped back from teaching and pivoted to admissions: a role she held at several downtown schools before stepping into a new challenge as Director of the Parenting Center at the 92nd Street Y - where she stayed for twenty years, and from where she eventually (mostly) retired. She hosted podcasts such as You Got This and Ask Sally Tannen, dispensing advice on all areas of parenting. Sally was known as a “legend” and “the baby guru” at the Y. Her favorite activity was running a regular drop-in group for new moms who marveled at her ability to calm the fussiest of babies. (And reluctantly obeyed her only rule: no hot coffee near the babies!) She also loved leading a class on grandparenting, and continued to do so virtually as recently as last month.
Sally was a true host: she expressed her love through physical affection and through food - traits she shared with her husband. Together, they loved to have family and friends over for holidays and dinners, and eat at their favorite restaurants (for years, every Friday evening at the Gramercy Tavern bar). She had the ability to prepare restaurant quality food without recipes or apparent effort, and to make everyone that crossed her path feel warmly welcomed.
In 2021, she and Arnie moved from New York City to Shelburne, Vermont to pursue their retirement dream of leaving “the city” and enjoying “the country.” There, Sally found another dream job arranging flowers at the Inn at Shelburne Farms. She delighted in cultivating a home flower and vegetable garden, enjoying Vermont’s spectacular scenery, building community with new neighbors and friends, and - most of all - hosting her seven grandchildren.
Sally was most devoted to her role as grandmother, or “Gigi”: from bath time to making Play-Doh to reading and more reading, she did everything she could to be a playmate and caretaker for the little ones who she adored and who adored her back. Her love for literature fostered the imaginations of her grandchildren and for that we will be forever grateful. We wish more than anything that she could have had more time with them.
Arnie speaks of Sally (his “bride”) as the best thing that’s ever happened to him, and none of us expected him to outlive her. It rocked our world when she received a diagnosis of stage four lung cancer in December of 2022; we’re fortunate that she stayed mostly healthy and free from the cancer’s effects until her last weeks.
We welcome your warm wishes and thoughts as we grieve this terrible loss. If you want to make a donation in Sally’s name, Arnie invites you do so to the Cancer Center at the University of Vermont Medical Center.

Stanley Samuel Greenberg - April 25, 1936 - April 02, 2024

Departed: 04/02/2024 (Burlington)
Obituary Preview: Stan Greenberg, loving husband of Kay, died peacefully in his home at the Wake Robin Life Care Community in Shelburne, VT on Tuesday April 2, 2024. Born April 25, 1936, in Passaic, New Jersey, Stan’s life was filled with joy in music, family, sports, and travel. His first and always friend and playmate throughout his life was his loving sister, Mary Jane. He loved listening to the radio, both the drama shows and classical music and spent much time becoming an expert pianist. He earned his doctorate from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. Blind since birth, he worked and traveled all of his adult life using a white cane and, in recent years, a guide dog.
At Eastman, Stan met his first wife, Nancy, and soon after graduating, started a family, Fred and Lisa. Living in northern New Jersey, Stan commuted to New York City to work at Scepter Records, which was founded by his mother. He was a key part of their many hits, working with artists such as the Shirelles, Dionne Warwick, and B.J. Thomas, earning two gold records. Living near New York City meant easy access to the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera - regular, passionate attendance at music was a constant in Stan’s life.
Stan had two careers, first as a record producer, arranger, and executive and second as a human services leader. He retired from active employment in 1996 when he was executive director of the Westside Center for Independent Living in Los Angeles. His music activities included conducting orchestras, choruses, and theatrical performances as well as being a professional pianist. Since retirement he had been a member of several nonprofit boards. He was chair of the Vermont State Independent Living Council and President of the Board for the Specialized Community Care Agency in East Middlebury. He devoted much of his life to advocacy for the rights of people with disabilities, Black people, and farm workers.
He moved from Beverly Hills, California, to Altamonte Springs, Florida, and finally to Burlington, Vermont, where he fell in love with and married Kay and welcomed her children, Aaron, Marni, and Joshua into his family. Stan and Kay had a bi- coastal marriage for 6 years and all the time their relationship deepened and grew over 41 years of their marriage.
Music was a constant throughout Stan’s life. He was at the first Executive Director for the Lyric Theatre Company and served as the music director for 14 of their shows at the Flynn. He delighted in conducting the performance of musicals such as South Pacific and Fiddler on the Roof and sharing them with his friends and family. Stan and Kay were founding members and Stan was on the Board of the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival.
Many also knew Stan as a sports fan - he was a font of information on teams from the past and present. He followed baseball, basketball, hockey, and football, and across his various moves was an avid Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, and Patriots fan. He absolutely loved the broadcasting of Vin Scully, longtime Dodgers broadcaster. He recorded one of longtime Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell’s songs and they became life long friends.
As expressed in his article “The State of Blindness” for the Braille Monitor in May of 2009, Stan had a nuanced view of blindness from both his own lived experience and also many years of professional advocacy. In the article, he expressed deep confidence in the ability of people with disabilities to experience all the joys of a full life and contribute to society in deeply meaningful ways. He called out the many ways that society puts roadblocks in the way and challenged all of us to address them honestly.
Stan is survived by his wife, Kay Stambler, his children, Lisa Sawin (Steve) and Aaron Stambler (Elaine Miller), his sister, Mary Jane Goff (Sam), his grandchildren Emma Sawin (Nate Gallup), Will Sawin (Yihe Dong), Oliver Sawin, Desiree Kennedy (Josh Benavides), Destiny Kennedy, Henry Kennedy, Sarah Stambler, and Esther Stambler, and his great-grandchildren River Sawin, Liam Sawin, Jayden Benavides and Isaac Benavides. Stan was predeceased by his children, Fred Greenberg, Marni Stambler, and Joshua Stambler.
A memorial gathering will be held at Ohavi Zedek Synagogue in Burlington at a future date and a Circle of Remembrance will be held at Wake Robin in Shelburne, Vermont, on May 5, at 2:00 p.m.
Donations in his memory may be made to Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival, 20 Winooski Falls Way, Suite 7, Winooski, VT 05404..

Nancy Looby - June 07, 1935 - March 08, 2024

Departed: 03/08/2024 (Burlington)
Obituary Preview: Nancy Looby, nee Godfrey, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2024 in Burlington, Vermont after a brief illness. Nancy was born in St. Albans, Vermont on June 7, 1935, the daughter of the late Arthur and Evelyn (Lambert) Godfrey.
Nancy grew up in Swanton, Vermont surrounded by loving relatives. Nancy especially enjoyed her time with her grandparents, Clifton and Florence Lambert, grandmother, Alma Godfrey, and her cousin who was like a brother, Ted Lapier. Nancy graduated from Swanton High School and Vermont Junior College. She worked briefly as a medical secretary before meeting the love of her life, Clement Looby.
After three short months of meeting, Clem proposed to Nancy, and on September 15, 1956, they married in Swanton, Vermont. Clem and Nancy’s marriage was an inspiration to many. They loved each other deeply and their love extended outward to their children, grandchildren, sons-in-law and daughter-in-law, extended family, and friends. They opened their house to numerous people for dinner or a stay. Nancy loved to feed people, and always had a meal, with more than enough left over, for anyone in her home. Every night, Clem and Nancy would sit down before dinner, have a cocktail and “visit”. It was not unusual for friends to stop by to join them. To this day, we smile when we talk about how they would “sit and visit”.
Nancy read voraciously. Typically, she could be found reading more than one book at the same time. She passed down her love of reading to her children and grandchildren. During summers, she worked as a children’s librarian at the library and a substitute librarian during the school year. Nancy’s love of books and instilling her love of reading to others led her to return to college where she graduated with honors from Trinity College of Vermont with a double major in Elementary Education and Psychology. She tutored many students in reading and writing. Nancy loved all types of books, but especially mysteries and cookbooks. Even towards the end of her life, she read constantly and found an interest in World War II history books and anything about Winston Churchill. She even took an interest in medical textbooks. Whenever her children were ever ill, she would read to us, no matter our age. It was always comforting to hear her share the books from her childhood.
Most important to Nancy was her family and a welcoming home. She loved her children deeply and became involved in what they did. Nancy was a Cub Scout Troop Leader, a Girl Scout Leader, homeroom mother, Sunday school teacher, and softball coach, among the many roles she played. She cheered her children from the sidelines and attended every event in which we were involved. When she had grandchildren, she loved each of them so very much. Nancy also loved animals, especially cats, and her beloved dog, Harris. Nancy and Clem supported the Humane Society throughout their lives.
Nancy will be missed by many. She is survived by her children, Lorraine (Michael) Cunningham, Theodore (Winnie) Looby, and Andrea (Jay) Amicangelo, and grandchildren, Aaron (Laura), Kate, and Sean Cunningham, Charlotte, Russell, Josephine, and Desmond Looby, and Wesley Amicangelo, and her beloved cat, Gracie. What gives us comfort is Nancy and Clem are reunited, talking about their day, as they sit and visit for eternity.

Departed: 02/11/2024 (Burlington)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Bissonette, 86, of Hinesburg, VT, passed away on February 11 at Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home following a long battle with dementia.
She was born on January 28, 1938, in Forest Dale, VT, the daughter of Fred Bryant and Ruby Gould Bryant. While living on a farm in Monkton, VT, she attended Hinesburg High School (1956 graduate), where she met Wayne Bissonette, and they married on November 27, 1957. Together they raised their children Michael, Joe, and Penny on the Bissonette farm in Hinesburg, where their hard work resulted in a happy and successful farming life. Barb and Wayne were very active members of the Vermont Farm Bureau, and farming was at the heart of everything they did.
While working alongside Wayne, Barbara also worked for the US Postal Service, rising from clerk to postmaster and overseeing the construction of new buildings in Starksboro and Hinesburg. After she retired in 1998 she volunteered at the Fanny Allen Hospital providing assistance and directions, and she and Wayne enjoyed traveling in their camper and being snowbirds in Florida.
Barb was a generous soul, never missing a chance to help her family. She was always up for a heated game of cards or the opportunity to “poke around” a store or for just listening and offering her opinion. She loved to laugh, to bake cookies and make chicken and biscuits. She was an amazing crafter, particularly with knitting and fancy crochet work, and she loved to read.
She is survived by her children, Michael Bissonette (Deb), Joseph Bissonette (Stephanie), and Penny Egan (Joe), as well as her beloved granddaughters – Kate Myhre (Dan), Sara Landry (Justin), Jeannine (John Sullivan), Erin, Emma, and Carrie – plus four great grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by her niece Demi Fischer (Hank, and children Joe, Tom, and Nick), with whom she had a very special relationship.
She was predeceased by her much-loved husband Wayne, her cherished brother Rod Bryant and his wife Bobbi, and many other friends and family whom she sorely missed.
As per Barb’s wishes, there will be no services, and a private burial will take place at a later date.

Departed: 01/21/2024 (Burlington)
Obituary Preview: James Jasper Bullock, age 92, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 21st, 2024, at the McClure-Miller Respite House in Colchester, VT. James had been living with family in Hinesburg, VT since October 2023. He suffered from COPD and throat cancer. He was a prostate cancer survivor too, but RSV proved too much for him. God called him home to glory, peace, and eternal life.
James was born in a farmhouse in Swansea, MA on July 24th, 1931, to Mildred (Tanner) and Alvin Bullock. He and his siblings grew up in Bristol, RI. James was a right tackle on the Bristol High School Football team and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. Following graduation James joined the Marine Corps and served as a switchboard operator in Korea and Japan before returning to the US. James married Ann R. Vincent on August 13, 1955, and they had seven children, settling first in Bristol, RI before building a house in Warren, RI. That house was designed by his wife, Ann, and built by James and his late father-in-law Napoleon Vincent, a Master Carpenter.
James enjoyed his job working as a lineman for Narragansett Electric. He worked there for 40 years and 4 months and often joked that if he could get new lungs he would go back to work. James loved seafood, especially Little Necks, Steamers, and Stuffed Quahogs. He was a volunteer fireman in Warren, RI and was usually involved with the local annual Clambake.
He always dreamed of having a boat of his own and finally got one in his later years. James had a quick wit, ready smile, and a willingness to lend a hand. In the lean years he heated the house with wood (possibly saving enough on heating oil to pay for the pick-up truck, log splitter, and chain saw he used to harvest “free wood”) He also took a second job delivering heating oil to homes throughout the area. His work ethic and willingness to work in year-round weather to support his family was inspiring.
James made time to bring his family on vacations to Lake Winnipesaukee in NH, or to visit his father in Paris, VA. The kids were stacked like cordwood in the red and white Volkswagen Bus we called the family car. In later years, James financed family reunions in various rustic locations like Lake Placid, NY and Londonderry, VT. During Covid he began a weekly Family Zoom meeting on Sundays that continues to this day.
James was predeceased by his ex-wife Ann (Vincent) Bullock, second wife Marie (Tanner) Bullock and partner Arlene Kovalcik. He and Arlene spent many winters in Bonita Springs, FL enjoying the warm weather and traveling by motorhome to and from Gobles, MI. James was also predeceased by his grandsons Marc Nicholson and David Bullock. James’s seven children and their spouses survive him: Michael and Candice (Waite), James and Carolyn (Bruscato), Kathleen Bullock, Ann and Ted Nicholson, Susan Cordeiro, Patricia and Denis Dionne, and Jane Bullock. James is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and their spouses, and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
James’s two sisters Betty Usher and Nancy (and Jim) Munroe and their children and grandchildren also survive him.
James is survived by his best friend Dick “Cousin” Usher and many nieces and nephews.
The family wants to thank and acknowledge all those special caregivers in RI, MI, FL, and VT that worked to heal him or alleviate his pain over the years, and the kind folks at the McClure-Miller Respite House in Colchester, VT.
A Holy Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on February 10th at St Jude Church in Hinesburg, VT by Rev James Zuccaro. There will be no calling hours or public reception. No flowers, please. Those who wish may donate in Jame’s memory to McClure Miller Respite House (UVM Health Network-Home Health and Hospice) https://www.uvmhomehealth.org/donate/make-an-online-donation/ Arrangements are in the care of the Ready Funeral and Cremation Services. Obituary Preview: In Memoriam: Arthur Raymond Wright, MD (March 5,1927- January 1, 2024)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a remarkable individual, Dr. Arthur Raymond Wright, who departed this world at the age of 96 surrounded by loved ones. Dr. Wright lived a life marked by academic brilliance, adventurous spirit, and boundless love for his family.
Born on March 5, 1927, in Lansing, Michigan, he was the son to the late C. Floyd and Margaret (Gibbs) Wright. Arthur demonstrated his exceptional intellect from an early age. A brilliant student, he completed high school at age 15 and completed two years of study at Michigan State University in a single year, prior to being eligible to apply to the Naval Academy, a testament to his dedication and thirst for knowledge. His academic journey continued at the United States Naval Academy, where he honed his leadership skills and embraced the call to serve others.
In 1952, Dr. Wright solidified his commitment to the well-being of others by earning his medical degree from the University of Michigan. His distinguished medical career began at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, where fate intervened as he crossed paths with the love of his life, Patricia Keefe. On December 27, 1956, Arthur and Patricia united in marriage at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.
Art and Pat embarked on a journey together, making their home in Augsburg, Germany, for two years before returning to the United States. Their early years were spent in Queens and Long Island, New York, before destiny led them to St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Eventually, they found their cherished homes on Terrace Street in Montpelier and Caspian Lake in Greensboro, where they created a lifetime of memories spanning over six decades.
Dr. Wright, a respected surgeon, dedicated many years of service to Central Vermont Hospital, leaving an enduring legacy in the medical community. His expertise extended beyond state lines, with impactful roles at medical institutions in Saranac Lake, New York, and the Dannemora Correctional Facility during his post-retirement years. Dr. Wright's skilled hands and compassionate heart left an indelible mark on the lives of countless patients, earning him the profound respect and gratitude of those he served.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Arthur was a man who embraced life with vigor and enthusiasm. An avid hunter, skier, sailor, golfer, and tennis player, he approached every activity with a zest for life that inspired those around him. Whether carving through the slopes at Sugarbush, navigating the open waters of Lake Champlain and Caspian, traversing the course at Mountain View Country Club, or competing on the court at the Super Seniors tennis tournament, he exemplified the joy of living in the moment.
Dr. Wright's intellectual curiosity was boundless. A well-read individual, he delved into the intricacies of family history, the tapestry of world history, and the wonders of travel. His adventurous spirit took him to far-flung corners of the globe, leaving him with a wealth of experiences that enriched his understanding of the world. Arthur was a member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church, the Greensboro Historical Society, and former president of Mountain View Country Club and the Central Vermont Rotary Club.
Central to Arthur's life was his deep and abiding love for his family. He shared a lifelong partnership with his beloved wife, and together they built a foundation of love, support, and shared experiences. As a father to five sons, he instilled in them the values of hard work, integrity, and a love for life. His legacy lives on through his many grandchildren, who were recipients of his boundless affection, generosity, and wisdom.
Arthur is survived by his five sons, Mark and his wife Megan and their children Nicholas and Mallory Wright; Stephen and his wife Andrea and their children Benjamin and Grayson Wright; Jamie and his wife Lisa and their children Owen and Cameron Wright and Derek and Tanner Allen; David and his wife Mary and their children Jackson, Kyle and Julia Wright; and John and his daughter Marin Wright. Arthur is also survived by his sister, Virginia Ouellette, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Arthur is predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Patricia (Keefe) Wright and his brother, Robert F. Wright.
The family is forever grateful to the compassionate staff at Maple Ridge Memory Care and Bayada Hospice. Arthur will be laid to rest in a private family service.
In every facet of his life, Arthur left an indelible mark. Obituary Preview: Nancy Ann (Stewart) Frack of South Burlington, Vermont passed away peacefully on December 18, 2023 in Quarry Hill Residence.
She was born on February 4, 1936, the daughter of Weston (Pete) and Helen Stewart in Fairfield, Iowa.
Nancy is survived by her three children, Susan Cathrall of Williston, VT,, Sara Dubie and husband Chris of South Burlington, VT., and Jeff Frack and wife Kathy of South Burlington, VT.. She also leaves her three Grandchildren Karri (Cathrall) Crossman and husband Brian of Vergennes, VT., Ryan Cathrall of Rochester, N.Y., Megan (Cathrall) Badger and husband Jack, of Vergennes, VT., and her five Great Grandchildren Weston, William, Lillian, and Cameron Crossman, and Owen Badger all of Vergennes, VT.
She is also predeceased in death by her husband Ronald (Ron) Frack of 33 years in 1991, her parents, and brother David Stewart. Nancy was the maternal head of the household, creating a home “hub” where her home was filled with love, family favorite meals, the smell of a warm cookie baking or apple crisp, and where every family traditional Holiday meal was spent. These are the times Nancy was the happiest and will be missed the most. The love for her family took her to every concert, sports event, and school activity no matter where or when for her kids, grandchildren, and later on her great grandchildren. She was always there!
Everyone who knew Nancy, knew she liked, no LOVED, sports! As a graduate of the University of Iowa, her love for the “Hawkeyes” remained throughout her life! She was a member of the Universities Scottish Highlanders marching and bagpipe band performing and playing as they toured Europe, played on the Ed Sullivan show, and most proudly marched in the Tournament of Roses parade and at half time of the Rose Bowl Game in 1956 the year her beloved Hawkeyes played in the National Championship game. A true highlight of her life.
After her husband Ron left Boeing at NASA as part of the project putting the first man on the moon and living in Cocoa Beach, Florida, the family moved to Vermont in 1969. It was here that her love for Boston sports started, especially as a Boston Red Sox fan!! Her love, passion, and devotion was shared with daughter Susan. You would always find them on the road to Fenway, or watching EVERY game while wearing “lucky” Red Sox hats or jerseys, eating a ritual of Opening Day Fenway franks, peanuts, and cracker jacks. The family knew if Nancy was watching or listening to a game, there would be loud cheering, and yelling at players, players that both she and Susan knew as if personally.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It may also include details about their life, accomplishments, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the funeral home or a family member, often with the assistance of a professional writer or editor. The writer will gather information from the family and create a concise and meaningful tribute to the deceased.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about their life story, personality traits, and charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. A longer obituary may be published online or in a local newspaper, while a shorter version may appear in a national publication.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

You can usually submit an obituary through the publication's website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication and its policies. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals or flat fees. Online publications may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that their life story is told in their own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber or formal. Including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can make the tribute more engaging and reflective of the person's personality.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?
