Leatrice Savoy Decuir - March 22, 1932 - January 06, 2024

Departed: 01/06/2024 (Lafayette)
Obituary Preview: Leatrice Savoy (Bonin) Decuir (1932-2024)
Leatrice, lovingly called Baby Lea, was born in Lafayette, Louisiana in 1932 to Enoch and Annette Mestayer Savoy but was a resident most of her life in New Iberia.  She was the older sister of Suellyn Savoy Burnham, whom she was very close to in her later years.  Leatrice was married to Hudson Bonin, who owned a meat market in town with two of his brothers.  She was incredibly loved by Hudson, who encouraged her to pursue her passions.  Later on, they built a home on enough land to house cattle and horses and own the shop there.  She had horses named Smokey and Morocco and rode in Sugarcane Festival parades, having sewn her own western costumes.  One of her fanciest costumes replicated "Zorro," which was popular in those days - complete with a real sword.  Leatrice had many interests and talents, some including creating exquisite ball gowns and special occasion formal gowns.  She took an interest in raising award-winning Persian cats and participated in cat shows where she made a few long distance friends.  One of her hobbies was creating live-edge redwood coffee tables back in the 80's.  Traveling was one of her enjoyments, and she visited many beautiful states over the years and even traveled to Canada with one of her daughters on a memorable field trip that is still talked about today.  During her working years, she became an expert wallpaper hanger, including murals, working in some of the most high end homes in New Iberia and Lafayette.  This was a trade she enjoyed and worked well into her 70's.  After that time, she learned jewelry making and visited numerous jewelry shows as far as Houston, New Orleans, Shreveport and San Francisco.  She exchanged ideas with her sister Suellyn, who had also taken an interest in jewelry making with her husband, Gerald, an instructor in stonework for jewelry during his retirement.  Her pieces were custom made with beautiful gemstones, and she sold them in local as well as Shreveport stores.  Lea and her sister Sue enjoyed exchanging fiction books and discussing the latest TV shows over the phone.  They talked several times a day as aunt Sue lived near Toledo Bend.
Leatrice and Hudson had five children, Wayne Bonin (Melissa Robin), Nanette Bonin (Scott Gilder), Mitzi Merrill (w - Jack Merrill), Linette Robin (Jeffery Robin) and Michelle Badeaux (Greg Badeaux).
Beloved grandchildren are Robin Bonin, Jenny Robin, Jeffery Robin, Jr., Kaitlin Montero and Mia Montero; and her beloved great-grandchildren, Eliot Bonin, Elise Bonin and Oliver Bonin. Leatrice took great pride in spending time with her grandchildren and was present for countless recitals, dance revues, plays, music events and graduations.  She started attending The Bayou Church in her eighties and was baptized as a believer in Jesus Christ at the age of 85.
She was widowed after around 18 years of marriage to Hudson and was later married to Lyn Decuir.   She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hudson Bonin and sister Suellyn Burnham and is survived by all of her children and grandchildren.
She was 91 and passed away from old age in the most peaceful of manners at Calcutta House in Lafayette, La.  She will be remembered with love and sadly missed, but we know she lived a full life, was getting tired, and was ready to meet her true Father in Heaven.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Michelle's house with family in the near future.  The family thanks Hospice of Acadiana and the entire staff at Calcutta House for their amazing care of Leatrice, comfort given to her and the family and for providing a beautiful place of respite for Leatrice to peacefully pass.
