Gayl Lynn Franssen - July 28, 1952 - August 24, 2020

Departed: 08/24/2020 (East Syracuse)
Obituary Preview: Gayl Lynn (Love) Franssen, was born July 28, 1952 in North Bend, OR to Donna and Roger Love. She lived in Reedsport, Oregon until the end of high school. Gayl was an outstanding swimmer, winning many races statewide and holding the school record in backstroke for over 20 years. After graduation, she moved to Eugene, OR to attend and graduate from Business College. She married Richard L. Franssen at the age of 22 and together they had two children. The family moved extensively while Rick was in the Navy, living in California, Idaho, New Mexico, Mississippi, Ireland, before finally settling in upstate New York to raise the children. Gayl was always supportive and proud of the boys as they graduated from college and started families of their own. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and them with her. At work, Gayl was universally popular because of her ever-present smile, overwhelming kindness, and it didn’t hurt that she threw great parties!
In the early 2000’s Gayl and Rick decided to part ways.
In 2005 Gayl met her partner Bruce Curry and started a life with him. They both liked travel and jazz music. She and Bruce would go to concerts in the park and at local wineries. Gayl recently recalled that wherever they went, she and Bruce were like the King and Queen of the ball. Their likeable and engaging personalities were fun to be around.
In her spare time, Gayl loved decorating, cooking interesting treats, reading, and cross-stitch. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Gayl and her sister made a commitment to see each other annually, despite living on opposite sides of the continent and in different countries. They kept that pact for over 20 years. When visiting the west coast, Gayl was sure to include stays with dear friends Marilyn, Barbara, and extended family. In between visits where almost daily phone calls filled with confidences, laughter, and unlimited love.
Gayl was the kind of person that put everyone else first. She loved to help. She would send cards, letters, and visit friends, family, and people in nursing homes just to brighten their day and let them know that she was thinking of them. Every day with Gayl was brighter. "Please help us remember Gayl’s beautiful spirit by “paying it forward” without expecting anything in return. Based on her life and the memories shared at the Celebration of Life after her passing, you’ll be showered with love anyway. After living for 5 years with breast cancer, Gayl died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, NY on August 24 th , 2020 at the age of 68. To make a donation to fight breast cancer in Gayl’s memory, please visit https://tinyurl.com/y5388qty"

Ben Wiles, Jr. - January 14, 1917 - September 26, 2019

Departed: 09/26/2019 (East Syracuse)
Obituary Preview: Ben Wiles Jr., a resident of Cedarvale for more than 70 years, died on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at University Hospital SUNY Health Science Center, Syracuse, New York.  Mr. Wiles was born in Syracuse and was the son of Ben and Barbara Stickley Wiles.  Mr. Wiles’ death was the result of a stroke and related complications.
As a child, Mr. Wiles lived at 438 Columbus Avenue in Syracuse, New Yorkin a residence now identified as the Gustav Stickley House. Mr. Wiles was Gustav Stickley’s grandson and could recall many activities that he shared with his grandfather in the Columbus Avenue house and in the family camp on Skaneateles Lake.
Mr. Wiles attended the nearby Sumner School in his elementary school years.  After skipping some grades, he finished at the Sumner School two years sooner than normal. He then attended and graduated at age 16 from the Nottingham High School.  After graduation from high school, he attended Syracuse University where he majored in Economics and Political Science and from which he graduated in 1937.While in college, he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Mr. Wiles was also the manager of the university’s intercollegiate basketball team. In these years, Mr. Wiles spent many hours in the enjoyment of summer activities in Skaneateles.  In particular, he was a participant the weekly sailboat races on the lake.  In this, he and the other racers sailed a class that had been recently designed and built at the Skaneateles Boat Works.  The class was formally known as the Interlake class.  It was informally known, then and now, as the “Mower” class
Upon completing his studies at Syracuse University, Mr. Wiles attended the Harvard Law School in Boston.  This was the first time when he had lived away from his parents’ house at 438 Columbus Avenue.  This abrupt shift away from a continued residence in Syracuse was mitigated somewhat by a practice he adopted of sending his clothes from Boston to Syracusefor washing and having the clean clothes promptly shipped back to him in Boston.
After completing his legal studies, and recognizing the perilous state of affairs in Europe at this time, Mr. Wiles decided to join the armed forces.  In August 1941, he and a friend traveled to the government offices on Whitehall Street in New York City and he enlisted in the Navy. After several months of training, he was detailed to the U.S.S. Pollux.  The Pollux was assigned to the Pacific theater where it made several voyages to deliver supplies and equipment to Australia and other allied outposts.
After several months service in the Pacific, the Pollux was directed to return to San Francisco, its home port.  During this trans-Pacific voyage, the Pollux navigator died and Mr. Wiles was required to add the navigator’s duties to his own.   Reflecting on this episode, Mr. Wiles has said it was particularly gratifying when the Farallon Islands, which are approximately 32 miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge, showed up in their expected location and at about the time expected.
While completing his naval training, Mr. Wiles met and married Harriet Elizabeth Brace.  The couple was given a nineteenth century farmhouse on Cedarvale Road in the Town of Onondaga as a wedding present.Together they renovated the house and barns on the 27 acre property and raised, at various times, sheep, chickens and a cow.  When these efforts were less than successful, much of the tillable land was shifted to oats, hay and, later, raspberries.  Land unsuitable for crops was used as pasture for horses.
In his teenage years, Mr. Wiles’ family owned and operated the Tecumseh Golf Club in Syracuse.  Moreover, even as he was engaged in his law studies, he was supplying management advice by mail from Boston to improve Tecumseh’s profitability.  This experience proved invaluable when, in 1953 and the years following, Mr. Wiles bought the land for and successfully developed the North Syracuse Golf Club.
In 1964, the North Syracuse property and business were sold.  The proceeds from this sale were used to purchase 264 acres of land a short distance from his Cedarvale home along the Pleasant Valley Road.  Following this purchase, Mr. Wiles devoted great efforts toward the protection of the Pleasant Valley property from development.  In particular, he took satisfaction in naming a tree’s species and estimating a tree’s age.  In addition, he was not shy about sharing his analyses with others who were treading the woodland trails with him.  In the winter, when his house was heated by two wood-burning stoves, he took great pleasure in the sounds and smells of the fire.
In this period, Mr. Wiles was the attorney for the Town of Onondaga Planning Board, and he also served as a trustee for the Marcellus Public Library.
After completion of his military service in February 1946, Mr. Wiles chose to return to Syracuse with his wife and family and join in a law partnership with his father.  During this period, he was also a founding member of the Samuel J. Tilden social club.  The “ Tilden Club” was organized through lunch time meetings at a Round Table at the University Club.  The sole qualification for membership in the Club was for the applicant to have been unfairly defeated in an election.  Mr. Wiles quickly satisfied the Tilden Club’s membership requirement through unsuccessful runs for the Mayor of Syracuse, for a seat in the New York State Senate, and for the Onondaga County District Attorney.
At the time of his death, Mr. Wiles was 102 years old.  In recent months, he reported to his visitors that he was “a happy man”.
Mr. Wiles is predeceased by his wife, Betty Brace Wiles, by his three brothers, John, Richard and Peter, and by his two sisters, Edith and Barbara. He also is predeceased by one of his daughters, Amanda Brown.
Mr. Wiles is survived by his four other children and by their spouses: Christopher (Renee) Wiles of Syracuse, Marion (Allan) Krauter of Skaneateles, Parker Brown of Syracuse, Ben (Sharon) Wiles of Schenectady, and Karl (Mary) Wiles of Syracuse.
He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and by the spouses of grandchildren as follows:  Allegra (Andrew Wechter) Wiles of Pittsburgh, Emilia Wiles of  Pittsburgh, Annette (Robert) Pickup of Skaneateles, David (Alexa) Krauter of Marblehead, Eric (Megan) Krauter of Skaneateles, Sabra (Chyld King) Brown of Boston, Alastair (Elizabeth Johnson) Brown of Brookline, Benjamin (Veronica Herrera) Wiles of Los Angeles, Laura (Jake Swearingen) Wiles of Bayonne, Theodore (Elizabeth Gardner)Wiles of New York City, Owen (Nikki Rosard) Wiles of New York City, Isabelle Wiles (Sam Kallman) of Syracuse.  He is also survived by 17 great-grand children.
There will be a memorial  service on November 2, 2019 at 2 p.m. in the University United Methodist Church at 324 University Avenue in Syracuse, New York.
Contributions may be made to the Gustav Stickley Home Foundation, 226 Teall Avenue – #6017, Syracuse, New York 13217, or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Leave condolences for the family on the Tribute Wall

Patricia A. Salomone - July 17, 1941 - September 23, 2019

Departed: 09/23/2019 (East Syracuse)
Obituary Preview: Patricia A. (Johnson) Salomone, believing in the saving grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ, went home recently to eternal life with her Creator. She enjoyed 78 years of enumerable blessings, was happily married to her best friend and "partner", Paul, was a loving and sweet mother to Susan and Christine and was a cherished grandma to six grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
A farmer's daughter wed to a NYC romantic humorist of Sicilian heritage, Pat was a gentle, charming and loving person (ready to help anyone in need) who had a hearty laugh. Except when reading historical novels, her hands were always busy creating, knitting, crochet and in recent years, quilting. For decades, she baked hundreds of cookies and candies at Christmas time for neighbors and friends. And, as a member of the Plank Road Quilting Guild, she made several well-crafted, exquisite quilts for her children and grandchildren.
In her early years, she was a church librarian, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and a regular participant in S.U.'s Women's Association. At home she canned fruits and vegetables, made clothing for her children and herself, caned chairs and stripped paint from oak and mahogany beams and paneling. In mid-life, she traveled (with her husband) to 20 countries, including Egypt (3 months), Italy, China, Peru and New Zealand. She also loved touring this wonderful country with her family or best friend. Most recently, they visited Philadelphia, Gettysburg and Quebec City. She was a beautiful and extraordinary woman.
Pat leaves behind, for a little while, her life partner, Paul; her daughters, Susan Stephanie Salomone (Jean Marie) and Christine Marie Salomone Murray (Andrew Peter); her grandchildren, Jayne Marie Salomone (Adam Revette), William Gabriel Salomone Murray, Samuel Michael Salomone Murray, Matteo Jerome Salomone, Mia Jayne Salomone and Jacob Matteo Salomone. The latest to arrive is great granddaughter, Gianna Mae Revette (9 Months old).
In addition, we especially thank Pat's sister, Janice Mae Paulson for her very kind and generous help and her brother, Gordon Russell Johnson for a visit to attend and comfort The Lady. Those who wish may make donations to either Hospice of CNY or Francis House. The date and time for a memorial service, to be held soon, will be commuicated to friends via email, Facebook and telephone. Leave condolences for the family at cremationservicesofcny.com

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary website, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who may want to attend the funeral or send condolences. They also provide a historical record of the person's life and can be a valuable resource for genealogists and researchers.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary, but it's often preferred that the family provides the information to ensure accuracy and personal touch.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charities or organizations that donations can be made to in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website it will be published on. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online publications or memorial websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online obituary websites allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Some newspapers may charge by the line or word, while others may offer package deals or discounts for online publications.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your family may still need to review and edit the content before publication.

What is a self-written obituary called?

A self-written obituary is sometimes referred to as a "self-obit" or "autobit." It's a unique opportunity for individuals to reflect on their life achievements and share their story with others.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous anecdotes or quotes can help capture the personality of the deceased and bring comfort to those reading it.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. They may have specific guidelines or forms to fill out, and some may accept submissions online or via email.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes, there are many online platforms and websites dedicated to publishing obituaries. These can be a cost-effective alternative to traditional newspaper publications and often offer more flexibility in terms of content and design.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Newspapers typically have daily or weekly deadlines, while online platforms may publish immediately after submission.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made to an obituary once it has been published in print. However, online obituaries can often be edited or updated at any time.

What if I find an error in a published obituary?

If you notice an error in a published obituary, contact the publication or online platform immediately. They may be able to correct the mistake in subsequent editions or updates.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can also create a memorial page or group to collect condolences and memories.

How do I notify friends and acquaintances about a death?

In addition to publishing an obituary, you can also reach out to friends and acquaintances personally through phone calls, emails, or social media messages. This can help ensure that everyone who needs to know is informed.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, date of birth and death. It's often used when a full obituary is not desired or feasible.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a cause they cared about.

How do I plan a funeral or memorial service?

Contacting a funeral home or mortuary is usually the first step in planning a funeral or memorial service. They can guide you through the process and help you make arrangements according to your preferences and budget.

What is a celebration of life?

A celebration of life is an informal gathering or ceremony that focuses on celebrating the life and legacy of the deceased rather than mourning their passing. It can be held instead of or in addition to a traditional funeral service.

Can I delay publishing an obituary until after the funeral?

Yes! While it's common for obituaries to be published shortly after someone passes away, there's no rule that says you can't delay publication until after the funeral or memorial service has taken place.

How do I preserve an online obituary?

Many online platforms offer options for preserving an obituary permanently, such as creating a memorial page or printing out a hard copy. You can also save a digital copy for your records.

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you want to republish an old obituary for any reason (e.g., anniversary of passing), you'll need permission from the original publisher or copyright holder. Be sure to check their policies before proceeding.

Are there any regulations around what can be included in an obituary?
