David Tennant - June 28, 1937 - December 03, 2023

Departed: 12/03/2023 (Essex)
Obituary Preview: David Tennant left this life the same way he lived it... on his own terms. He died in his home in Kingsville, ON with the love of his life, Mary Frances (Vinall) by his side, and soccer on the telly.
Born in 1937 in Ayrshire, Scotland, Dave emigrated to Canada at the age of 9 aboard the Aquatania, with his parents, Agnes and David and his sister, Senga, who all predecease him. Growing up an immigrant in the north end of Hamilton, Dave developed a quick wit and a thirst for knowledge. From running a paper route as a kid to being acknowledged for his 55 years of service in Local UA67, Dave was no stranger to hard work. For many years he was one of the most sought-after welder and pipefitters in the Hamilton local, but when he wasn’t traveling for work, he mended many a Dover fishing tug and expressed his creative flair by shaping metal into pieces of art. Dave had a need to be best at whatever he put his hand to. Darts, billiards and golf provided many ashtrays and dust collectors over the years. While healing from a double knee replacement, he turned his interest to computers and “Nunees” became the computer wizard for all friends and family. Dave was familiar with ICQ long before the rest of us knew anything about instant messaging. Gardening was a lifelong passion that kept him busy outdoors and the neighbours well fed in his later years.
He had the extremely good fortune to father 4 daughters; the late Kimberly Tennant, Amanda Wood, Leslie VanSickle (Clayt) and Jennifer McRobbie (Jamie Friesen) and to give the love of a father to a 5th, Kimberly Bigelow.
Dave thoroughly enjoyed his El Dorado rum with a good cigar, and on the best days you’d hear him say with a grin “I wonder what the poor folks are doing”. Until this past year Dave was never without a doting dog... but it was Floyd the crazy boxer that he loved most. Although he dealt with many serious health issues over the years, his body continued to hang in there and allowed him to squeeze every last drop of joy this life had to offer.
Besides being husband of 35 years to Mary Fran, and Dad to 5 daughters, Dave was “Poppy” to his grandchildren Julia (Toby), Danielle (Brock), and Sarah (Dan); David (Alissa) and Matthew; Stephen, Tanner and Elizabeth; Kyle, Dylan and Tyler and was “Poppy the Great” to his little Aussie great grandsons Lennon and Felix.
Here’s to happy days... wherever you are.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral arrangements, and other details.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased or a close friend. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also assist with writing and publishing obituaries.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral arrangements and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for around 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help to make the obituary more personal and meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber or serious. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help to capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars, depending on the length and placement of the obituary.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes, many online platforms and funeral homes offer online-only obituary publication options. These can be more affordable than traditional newspaper publications.

How long do online obituaries stay available?

The duration of online obituaries varies by platform. Some may remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived after a certain period. Be sure to check with the platform or funeral home for their specific policies.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes. Check with the newspaper or online platform to see if they allow revisions or corrections. Keep in mind that changes may incur additional fees.

What if I need to correct an error in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform immediately. They will work with you to correct the mistake as soon as possible.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add meaning and context to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased's personality or interests.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If you're unsure about including certain details, such as cause of death or sensitive personal information, consider consulting with family members or a trusted advisor before publishing.

Can I include information about memorial services or celebrations of life?

Yes! Obituaries are a great way to announce memorial services, celebrations of life, or other events honoring the deceased. Be sure to include dates, times, locations, and any other relevant details.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

You can still publish an obituary without including funeral details. Simply state that services will be private or by invitation only.

Can I include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Absolutely! Many families prefer donations to charity instead of flowers. Be sure to specify the organization(s) and any relevant instructions for making donations.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

Triple-check facts like dates, names, and spellings before submitting the obituary for publication. It's also a good idea to have multiple people review the text for errors or omissions.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. Check with the original publication or online platform to see if they allow republication. You may need to obtain permission from the original author or pay additional fees.
