Thomas "Tom" Mickey - May 27, 1938 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Watertown)
Obituary Preview: PLEASE NOTE THE DATE OF DEATH HAS BEEN CHANGED TO KEEP OBITUARY CURRENT.
Thomas Anthony Mickey (85) of Watertown, South Dakota, passed away peacefully in Orange Park, Florida on March 26, 2024. Tom was the oldest of 7 children born to William and Mary Mickey on May 27, 1938. A memorial service will be held for Tom in Watertown, South Dakota at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel on Friday, June 21, 2024 at 3:00 p.m.  Celebration of Life and Dinner get together after the service at Rick and Cyndi Wadsworth's Farm, 18917 446th Ave Hayti, SD 57241. Tom was born and raised in Lancaster, Ohio. He was an ambitious youngster who worked delivering newspapers and holding the position of caddy master as a teenager at the local golf club. Soon after graduating high school, he and his childhood friend Steve Krepel enlisted in the Air Force, where he proudly served for 8 years. Upon leaving the military, Tom quickly landed a job at the Federal Aviation Administration as an electronics technician. His job took him many places over those 30 years, most notably Tonopah, Nevada; Cold Bay, Alaska; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. He would eventually retire and settle in Watertown, South Dakota, home of his late wife Dianne Mickey.  Tom had a love for the great outdoors. In his early years he enjoyed golf, but his true passion was all things fishing. He often talked about he and his dad fishing together, using money he earned working a paper route to purchase fishing tackle, rods, and reels. He passed down his enthusiasm for camping, hunting, and fishing to his daughter and 4 sons. Their family often packed up the kids, dogs, and even a pet turkey and drove hundreds of miles in a station wagon to go camping, hunting, and fishing for the weekend. After his retirement, he and Dianne spent time wandering the roads of the USA in a motorhome with dogs, birds, and even fish in tow, camping, looking for yard sales, and fishing together. They both truly lived their best lives. Tom had an outgoing personality and a natural charisma that made it easy for him to make friends, no matter the situation or where life took him. He was a man of many stories—some factual, while others were questionable. Tom’s witty sense of humor and the ability to be a glorious pain in the neck at times will be sorely missed. Tom was beloved by all who had the pleasure to know him. He was keenly aware of the beautiful life he was blessed with. Tom was genuinely grateful for all the love and kindness shown to him throughout his long life. Tom would often say, emphatically with a chuckle, “The sun always shines on Angel Mickey.” Tom is survived by his children, Cynthia Wadsworth (Rick) of Hayti, South Dakota, Thomas C. Mickey (Teresa) of Middleburg, Florida, William Mickey of Milton, Florida, Steven Mickey of Watertown, South Dakota, and Alan Mickey of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruthann Krepel of Queen City, Arizona, Jane Nash (Tom) of Phoenix, Arizona, and Bernadine Bolen (Dave) of Orange Vale, California; and many nieces and nephews. Tom is preceded in death by his wife, Dianne Mickey; his parents, William and Mary Mickey; two sisters, Bernadette Chandler-Smuda and Virginia Doran; his stepson, Mark Gilland; and his granddaughter, Halee Mickey.

Ross J. Mitchell - May 17, 1940 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Watertown)
Obituary Preview: Please Note Date of Service
Ross J. Mitchell, age 83, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Prairie Lakes Healthcare.  Memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Watertown with Father John Fischer celebrating.
Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2024, with scripture service and rosary at 7:00 p.m., at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown.
Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Watertown.  Active urnbearers will be Clifford Mitchell, Michael Miller, Gary Mitchell, and Ken Mitchell.
Ross Joseph Mitchell was born May 17, 1940, in Watertown, South Dakota to Carolyn (Fox) and Clifford Mitchell.  Ross grew up in Watertown, where he attended I.C. school and graduated in 1958 from Watertown High School. He attended St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minnesota. He married  Nina (Schmeling) on February 17, 1973, at I.C. church in Watertown, and they were happily married for 52 years. Together they have two children: Elizabeth “Beth” and Clifford “Mitch”. He gave his children the gift of his family values and his deep faith; he believed in hard work, and he was very proud of the professional accomplishments of his children.
He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years. He started in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but he worked the majority of his career in Watertown in the positions of Night Supervisor, Distribution Clerk, and in the finance section.
His family will remember him as loving, patient, funny, sensitive, and caring. He was devoted to his wife, and a wonderful father to his children. In his earlier years, he enjoyed pheasant and duck hunting with his family and friends. In later years, he and Nina were rarely separated from each other, and they loved doing everything together.
Ross always had a genuine smile and warm greeting every time he ran into friends around town. He loved living in Watertown – he treasured the history and all the friends and families that he worked with, grew up with, and connected with over his long life. His family always joked that he knew everyone in town, and it wasn’t far from the truth! If he didn’t know someone directly, he knew someone in their family, and had a fun story to remember them.
He truly enjoyed spending time with all of his immediate and extended family – siblings, nieces and nephews – and stayed in close contact with them throughout his life. One of his favorite things was just to be with family.
When Ross and Nina were raising their children, they would travel throughout the United States, taking many family vacations in the R.V. and embarking on journeys that often rivaled National Lampoon’s Vacation due to all of the misadventures that followed them along the way. After his retirement, he and Nina took to taking much longer trips and traveled all over the globe. He always said that they had to get out and see things while they could! His curious mind soaked up the history everywhere that they went. Some of their favorite places were Egypt, China, Russia, Greece, and Spain, and they adored their many cruises. As always, they made wonderful friends while on their adventures.
Ross was an active member of Holy Name of Jesus Church, where he enjoyed being a Eucharistic Minister, server, and going to bible studies. He loved going to Wednesday morning mass and having coffee and rolls so he could chat with friends after services. Ross, along with Nina, was a very busy volunteer in his retirement. He volunteered for over 12 years at Prairie Lakes Hospital, and he also gave his time to Meals on Wheels and was a member of WARSP. He  was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a lifetime member of the Elks. Of course, Ross occasionally made time for a lazy evening in his recliner to watch a little television.
Ross is survived by his wife Nina, daughter Elizabeth (Michael Miller) of Castle Rock, CO; son, Cliff (Jaime) of Oak Creek, WI; their grand-daughter Elena (Miller); his brother Gary (Mariel Luna) of Winchester, VA; sister Monica (Charles Stutes) of Rayne, LA; sister Joan (Ken Busch) of Prior Lake, MN; sister Carol (Dennis Dingman, deceased) of Sioux Falls, SD; brother Ken (Georgia) of Eagan, MN; brother-in-law Bill (Cheryl) Schmeling, of DeSoto, KS; sister-in-law Charlotte (Dan) Muller of Sioux Falls, SD; and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents Clifford and Carolyn Mitchell, his infant brother John, and sister-in-law Joanne(James) Murdoch.

Margaret Fae Robish was born April 3, 1928, in rural Hazel, SD, to Edwin and Cletus (Schaefer) Robish. At the young age of 7 Margaret’s mother passed away after their family contracted diphtheria. As a result of exposure to the disease Cletus passed away 2 weeks after giving birth to Margaret’s youngest brother, Maynard.  Edwin raised his family alone with the help of his mother, who lived with them until all the children graduated from High School. At 16 Margaret was hired by Bertha Gjerde to be her “chore girl”.  Bertha made the statement to Maurice, “Don’t let her get away!” in 1948 they were married.
Margaret was baptized at Kellerton E. U. B. Church, rural Hazel. She attended country schools Brantford #2 for grades one through seven and eighth grade at Opdahl #2. She was a 1946 graduate of Hazel High School.  Margaret was proud to have been a Mustang cheerleader for 4 years and a catcher for the Hazel Fast pitch Softball Team. She worked for George and Verna Redlinger, The Gjerde Farm, and JC Penney.
Margaret married Maurice Gjerde on September 12, 1948, at Kellerton Church. To this 58 year union, they raised three children; Bryce, Renae, and Cleo. They made a living on a farm near Vienna, SD before moving to Watertown, SD in the fall of 2003. Maurice and Margaret created M & M Bus Travel Service they adventured to the Norsk Hostfest in Minot, ND and the Tulip Festival in Orange City, IA.  Maurice passed away in 2006, however, Margaret continued the bus trips for a total of 33 years. She took 26 buses to Daniel O’Donnell concerts. She was recognized by him at several concerts and had the privilege of personally meeting him.
Margaret participated in the Happy Homemakers Extension Club, Circle and Ladies Aid at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, rural Henry, and Sons of Norway. Even though she was of a German descent, Margaret acquired Norwegian traditions, such as making lefse by the hundreds. She was noted for her delicious potato salad, date cake, and making people smile portraying Bubbles the Clown.  If she knew your birthday or anniversary, she most likely reported it to the radio station or sent a greeting card with a corresponding holiday stamp.  At monthly family birthday gatherings, Margaret decorated a cake with some interest of each birthday member. She “earned” her bleacher butt attending grandkids church functions, music concerts, sporting events, and 4-H shows. No matter the event, she “developed” her hobby of taking pictures of anything and everything, even the TV screen of her favorite Twins baseball player. Her sincere love of family was captured in every one of her snapshots. Margaret was an avid Minnesota Twins, Vikings, and Timberwolves fan.  Although she loved talking on the phone, if you called her during a Twins game, she may have cut the conversation short so she could focus on the game. Margaret stated, “what a day!” to prove her appreciation for each day, as she viewed every day as something special. Often saying “I am never bored; I don’t even know what boring means”.
Grateful for her advice on life are her children; Bryce (Kay) Gjerde, Renae (Harold) Singrey, and Cleo (Ralph) Fulton; grandchildren; Crystal (Dale) Thue, Jasmine (Richard) DeSmet, Aaron (Amy) Singrey, Joel (Pam) Singrey, Stuart (Laura) Lewno, Tiffany (Ryan) Stormo, Katie (Brady) Goodall, Eric (Nadine) Gjerde, Angela (Austin) Fleming; 25 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Estelle Robish; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In the 1970's, she spent many weekends with her husband at motocross races, helping the dealership’s riders (or “their boys,” as she likes to call them) go out and win. Even in her later years, Marilyn’s irresistible, kind, and compassionate personality shined through, and she was adored by everyone. Danny Krueger - April 18, 1957 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Watertown)
Obituary Preview: Danny Krueger, age 66, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024 at Avera McKennan in Sioux Falls, SD.  Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown.
Danny Ray Krueger was born in Watertown on April 18, 1957, to Fredrick Vincent Krueger and Dorothy Mae McPeek. Danny Ray lost his father at a young age but adored his mother, Dorothy. He took his kids to visit her and have her delicious banana bread often. Danny Ray’s mother always enjoyed buying everyone Dairy Queen footlongs and shakes during the many projects Danny Ray started.
Danny Ray whistled and wooed Deb as teenagers and wanted a family right away. Soon after, they had their son, Shane Krueger, born in October of 1974. As soon as Danny Ray was 18, he married Deb the very next day, April 19, 1975. Although young, they continued to build their family with Mindy (Brian) Hill, born in December of 1977; Danelle Krueger, born in July of 1979; and Cassie Krueger, born in June of 1981.
He tried many jobs but finally found his place welding. The first time he welded he knew it was the job he loved. Danny Ray would begin and end his welding days with Todd Good at B&G Welding.
Tragedy also hit Danny Ray’s family as they lost their little angel, their daughter Cassie, at 10 years old, in October of 1991. After years of pain and loss, Mindy brought in the first grandchild, Gavin, in July of 1997. Weeks later, Danelle had Kayden in August of 1997. Dan and Deb were ecstatic to become Papa and Nana. Although Papa showed little emotion, he loved his grandchildren more than anything.
Soon after, Dan and Deb bought the lake house and began millions of projects as he could build anything,  with some still being worked on to this day. We all knew him as a hard worker, with many breaks drinking coffee, smoking, and thinking. He was quiet, yet so full of thoughts.
As Dan continued to build his dream house, his kids continue to add to the family. Mindy added Brayden (Bubba) in October of 2003 and Gracie in September of 2005. Shane finally joined in and added Cora in November of 2007. Years later, Danelle keeps it going with Ethan in March 2013 and Brandon in March of 2016. Kayden had the first great-grandchild, Theo, in March of 2016. Brian Hill then married Mindy, and Dan was proud to accept him as his own. Nick Bent was not family by paper, but he helped him through some of the toughest years.
Danny Ray is remembered for his love for racing, helping Danny Hall, and riding his Harley with Bobby Hall. He was happy to put miles on his bike with Deb and each of his kids getting to ride with him. Everyone saw Dan as a good guy and hard worker who was quiet but full of wonder. He also was a Trump supporter, but we love him anyway.
Dan had heart issues and beat cancer. He was strong and his stubbornness kept him busy washing dishes and completing many projects.  His siblings Doris,  Darwin, Diane and Darlene also lost their lives to cancer.
Danny Ray is survived by his younger brother Donovan. Arrangements by Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel www.crawfordosthus.com Watertown, Hayti, De Smet, Bryant

Burial will be at Mother of God Monastery Cemetery in Watertown. S. Emily was born on Sept. 14, 1932, in Flasher, ND, to Lewis Meisel and Pauline (Dolderer) and given the name Clara Virginia. S. Emily was the sixth of eight children. Pauline traveled back to her birthplace in Buchau, Germany to rescue her niece Erika, who was orphaned after her father was killed during World War II. Emily said, “Erika became one of our family, like a sister.”
S. Emily grew up on a ranch near Selfridge, ND, which nurtured her love of nature and the presence of God in all things. She and her younger brother, Jim, spent time doing chores together and riding horseback was a special treat for them.
As a small girl, Emily heard a call to become a sister. At 15, her parents made it possible for her to go to high school at Mount Marty in Yankton, SD. In June of 1946, just 16 years old, Emily entered Sacred Heart Convent in Yankton. After high school and one year of college, S. Emily began teaching elementary school, a mission that would last for 23 years. These assignments would send her to the South Dakota towns of Dimock, Zell, Polo, Aberdeen, and Richardton, ND.
S. Emily loved learning, having received degrees: BA from Mount Marty College; M Ed from Univ. ND; certificate in Spirituality from St. Louis University, MO; and MA in Spirituality from Holy Names College in Oakland, CA.
She became a founding member of Mother of God Monastery on June 15, 1961. In 1979, she began new ministries in spiritual direction and retreat work, and was the formation director for the monastery until 1987. After a sabbatical, Emily served as retreat director at monasteries in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Richardton, ND.
S. Emily returned to the monastery in 1999, serving as the director of the spirituality center, spiritual director, and a member of the monastery vocation and formation teams. She was the Assistant Prioress from 2000 to 2005.
During her years as retreat director, S. Emily created an eight month “Journey Program” based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Masterfully, she created a series of workshops that blended beautifully into the powerful experience of the spiritual exercises. S. Emily touched, moved, and led others to a deeper reality of the love of God; they are too numerous to count. She said, “Of all the programs that have given me the most joy in helping others the Journey and the Inner Child have been very special.”
S. Emily is preceded in death by her parents; and siblings: Carl, Robert, George, Martin, Mary, and Erika.
She is survived by her brother, Jim and his wife, Carolyn; one sister Pauline (Polly) West; many nieces, nephews, and friends; and the Sisters of Mother of God Monastery. Arrangements by Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel Watertown, Hayti, De Smet and Bryant www.crawfordosthus.com

Burial will be St. Mary's Cemetery in Watertown, SD. Honorary pallbearers are Wayne Bessman, Ron Albertson, Bruce Hestad, Darrell Popham, Loren Berg, Mort Schooley and all Sale Barn Livestock friends. Active pallbearers Chance Popham, Clay Popham, Jeff Popham, Bob Popham, Bob Sour, Nick Stormo and  Tim Bach.
Gene was born on September 11, 1933 in Watertown, SD, to Harry and Teresa (Maag) Popham. He attended Prairie Queen country school in Codington county for two years. After the family moved to Hamlin county in 1941, Gene attended the Oxford 6 school which was on the quarter of land that the family owned and lived on. Gene received an 8th grade diploma in 1946.
After Gene’s father had health problems, Gene decided to skip high school to stay home and help his father farm. In the winter months, at the age of 13, he worked at the South Dakota Livestock Sale Barn in Watertown, SD, which was owned by his uncles, Tom and Walter (Bud) Popham. In 1969, Gene and his brother, Jerald, formed a partnership and took over the family farm of raising crops, cow/calf operation and a feedlot, which they continued to run until it was dissolved in 2014 and turned over to their sons, Mike, Bob (Jerald’s), and Scott (Gene’s).
In addition to farming, Gene became an order buyer of livestock for people and would go to sale barns many days a week. It was a job he really loved and enjoyed but tried his best to get home in time to attend his children and grandchildren’s school activities. In 1981, when the SDLS barn was closed for a short time, Gene and Jerald became partners, with others, to reopen the business. Gene’s pride in the sale barn was to go look at cattle, visit in the office with farmers and run the auction block. It was successfully run until it burned down in August, 2015.
On June 9, 1962, Gene married Marlys Sour in Henry SD, they spent over 61 years together. They continued living on the family farm until 1994 when they built a new home at Lake Kampeska. He was a member of the IC Church and the Elks in Watertown. Gene loved to play cards, enjoyed hunting and fishing (if they were biting, no time to just sit on the lake and just enjoy it), and could also be found every Fall running the combine until 2022. Nothing gave him more joy than spending time with his two grandsons.
In September 2023, Gene’s family planned a 90th birthday party for him at his home. That was one of the highlights of his life and he appreciated his family and friends coming. He knew how fortunate he was to still be enjoying life at that age.
Gene is survived by his wife, Marlys, of Watertown; his children Scott (Lynn) Popham of Hayti, SD, and Chad Popham; two grandsons, Chance and Clay Popham; one sister-in-law, Nelda Popham, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lynell, Jerald, and Phillip Popham and one sister-in-law, AnnaMae Popham. Arrangements by Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel www.crawfordosthus.com Watertown, Hayti, De Smet, Bryant

Nicole Renee Carter - March 12, 1990 - March 01, 2024

Departed: 03/01/2024 (Watertown)
Obituary Preview: Nicole R. Carter, age 33, of Modesto, CA, passed away on March 1, 2024, after an unfortunate battle with addiction and declining mental health. A memorial for Nicole will be held April 27, 2024 at 1:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church of Watertown. Dan Schutte will officiate. The family requests that any memorials may be made out to Michelle Schutte in order to be put toward a trust for Nicole’s children; Deven and Jahzara Green.
An official burial date will be decided privately in the future.
Nicole was born on March 12th, 1990, in Modesto, CA, to Ronald Carter and Michelle (Bechtold) Schutte. Nicole was beautiful inside and out. She was full of life and fiercely independent right from birth! In kindergarten, she read many small books, which catapulted her to becoming an avid reader and writer. Her imagination and dramatics incentivized her to be in several plays growing up. She took part in plays with the Missoula Children's Theatre group in De Smet, SD; such as Rumpelstiltskin and Cinderella. She played Brigitta in "The Sound of Music". She received a boisterous roar from the crowd at the end of the play, when she slid for across the floor as she came out to make her curtsy. With her writing talent, she was selected for All State Journalism in her senior year of high school. Throughout school, ,she also participated in various activities; such as the Scrubs Program, playing violin in orchestra, youth basketball, softball, track, and was also a cheerleader for the Watertown Laker Hockey team. She was very talented and truly cherished being on the Lime Lights Dance Team in Brandon, SD, that took 1st Place in their division, as well as Grand Champion overall in 2002. Although, she attended grade school in the DeSmet and Brandon School Districts, she attended  Watertown High School from seventh grade through graduation with the Class of 2008.
Nicole learned about Jesus with her family at First Baptist Church and Camp Judson, but also sought the Lord on her own at times throughout her adult life. Like many, she was learning how to dive into adulthood taking various jobs throughout her younger years, but in her heart, she wanted to become a realtor. Nicole met the father of her children, and had two beautiful and talented children, Deven and Jahzara Green. She was a proud and doting mother and loved taking them to parks, the zoo, the library, doing crafts and cooking amazing meals. She had a knack for cooking! She loved her kids so very much and had a heart to be so helpful to others in need.
In the last four years, Nicole’s life took an unfortunate turn. We pray that the fight we were in to save her and the roadblocks we hit along the way, will propel us forward in making a difference in the lives of others. Our daughter's life will be an example to others and she will not have died in vain. Her children will know the goodness of who she was and the ultimate fact that in the last conversation her mother had with her, Nicole freely confessed that Jesus Christ is real, He is the Lord, that He died, was buried three days and rose to save her.
Nicole is survived by her two children, Deven and Jahzara Green; her parents Ronald (Kaycee) Carter, of Modesto, CA; her mother, Michelle (Dan) Schutte of Watertown, SD; her sister, Erica (Craig) Pierson-Way, of Sioux Falls, SD; her brothers, Garrett and Grant Halverson; Ronnie Carter, Jr., of Modesto, CA; step-siblings Derek and Jake Schutte, of Watertown, SD; Treasure and Garrett, of Modesto, CA.; her grandparents Phillip (JoAnne) Bechtold and Joseph Adams, all of Sioux Falls, SD. Nicole was preceded in death by her grandfather, Richard Carter, of Modesto, CA and grandmother, Carol Adams, of Sioux Falls, SD. Nicole comes from a very large family of many aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorials for the children’s trust can be made to Michelle Schutte 209 4th St SE, Watertown, SD 57201

Ross J. Mitchell - May 17, 1940 - May 06, 2024

Departed: 05/06/2024 (Watertown)
Obituary Preview: Date of Death Has Been Changed to Keep Service Current
