Jay Robert Holmes - April 18, 1934 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Aurora)
Obituary Preview: Jay Robert Holmes passed peacefully on April 27, 2024, at the Ozarks Methodist Manor in Marionville, Missouri. Born April 18, 1934, in Cheyenne, Oklahoma, Jay was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend to many.
Jay had five siblings and was the youngest boy of two brothers and three sisters. The Holmes family traveled through Illinois, Kansas, and Oklahoma via two covered wagons. His older brother, Fred, drove one of the covered wagon teams at age 12. Jay and his siblings lived in a tent for one year, did not enjoy running water, nor electricity, throughout their childhood in Missouri and learned to live off the land with very little. Their mom made their clothes from flour sacks—something of an embarrassment to the boys, as was the fact that the family couldn’t afford a car. They raised cattle, gardened, hunted, and fished while living in several towns including Monett, Aurora, Crane, and Springfield.
Jay played football at Aurora High School and served as the team’s co-captain. Jay was an avid Chiefs fan. He also loved his high school poetry class and recited famous poems for decades following graduation in 1953. A handsome, friendly student beloved by many, Jay was Homecoming King his senior year. While at Aurora High, a cute redheaded freshman, Carol Jones, caught his eye. Jay and Carol celebrated 67 wonderful years of marriage on February 22, 2024, and enjoyed retirement on their farm.
Jay served in the United States Army from 1954-56 where he had basic training in Texas, followed by specialized transportation training at Fort Knox in Kentucky. He and his unit were later deployed to Germany. Jay regaled his wife and children with German words, coins, photos, and shared many adventuresome stories from his time in the service.
After serving in the military, Jay’s career was in auto body work where he also expertly painted pin stripes and was often asked to paint the most detailed work. His career spanned from Wichita, Monett, Reliable Chevrolet, and eventually to Warren Auto Works in Springfield where he retired as shop foreman. After retirement, Jay and Carol raised cattle, chickens, and enjoyed gardening. Their door was always open to friends, neighbors, and family. During downtime, they were fond of playing Rook, Dominoes, and other board games.
Jay Holmes will be greatly missed. He made his mark in a variety of significant ways and touched many people in all walks of life. Blessed to celebrate his 90th birthday recently, a milestone Jay had looked forward to all year, he is preceded in death by his parents, Geneva and Clay Holmes; his stepfather, Jack Walker; his siblings Fred Holmes, Joyce VanNortwick, Wayne Holmes, Wanda Mathews, and Jean Shade; his cousin Emery Holmes; his granddaughter, Shana Hight, and her husband, Scott. Survivors include Jay’s treasured wife, Carol; his children, Beth (Holmes) Carter and her husband, Bob; Alison Holmes, and Steve Holmes; granddaughters Amy Grabher and her husband, Chris; great-grandchildren Ethan Jay and Grace Grabher, of California; granddaughter Monica Marshall and her fiancé, Brenden; step-granddaughters, Allison Twist and Jessica Connolly, their husbands, Erik and Doug; and their 12 children in Arizona; cousins, Ben Johnston, Carol Webb, John Holmes, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home in Aurora, 303 S. Jefferson Ave. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. followed by the service at 2:00 p.m. with military honors at Maple Park Cemetery in Aurora afterward. Pastor Mark Reavis will officiate.

Walter Spruce Pettit, Jr. - November 11, 1926 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (Aurora)
Obituary Preview: “Walt” Pettit passed “from this world to the next” of natural causes with quiet dignity on April 19, 2024. Walt was born in Springfield, Missouri on November 11, 1926, to Walter, Sr. and Vena Belle Pettit. He was the youngest of three children. He grew up idolizing his sister Ruth and his brother Frank who were 18 and 16 years older than Walt respectively.
Walt graduated from Greenwood High School in 1944 then entered the Army serving in active duty during World War II and later as an Officer in the Army Jag Corp during the Korean War. Walt was a proud veteran who was honored to serve his country for over 16 years.
In 1949, Walt graduated from Drury University with degrees in Political Science and Economics. In 1953 he graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Law Degree.
While at Drury Walt met his first love, Carol Roberts. In 1950 they were married and enjoyed 44 happy and fulfilling years together until Carol lost her long battle with breast cancer in 1995. Walt’s survivors include his three children, Shelley Hume (Jeff Van Haveren), of Nixa, Walter S. Pettit, III “Skip” (Betsy) of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Scott Roberts Pettit (Theresa) of Aurora, eight grandchildren (JP Stockton, Jack Hume, Sean Hume, Lauren Tarbutton, Sam Pettit, Ben Pettit, James Pettit, Allison Patton) and thirteen great-grandchildren (Kylie, Liam, Samara, Mattea, Anna, Luca, Aiden, Lexi, Brooks, August, Isla, Everly and Miles). He cherished his special bond with his nieces and nephews, especially Carroll Caruthers (Richard), Bob Roper (Ellen), Martha Roper (Peter Scales) and David Sigmon (Mary Alice). All of whom, with their spouses and partners, survive and will miss him.
In 2003 Walt married Ann Medcalf White. They enjoyed 16 years of marriage before Ann died of breast cancer in 2019. Walt is also survived by stepson David White of Republic. In 1953, Walt started his law practice with his father-in-law Earl Roberts in Steeleville, Missouri. In the beginning, he practiced some criminal defense work that he did not enjoy. He lost one of his first trials where his client claimed to be innocent of stealing hogs. Walt was crushed when the guilty verdict was read by the jury foreman. For over a year Walt thought he failed an innocent man, until he received a gift (a leather wallet) from his client who was serving time in prison and a note that read, “Dear Walt, I wished I hadn’t stole them hogs.”
In the mid 1950’s, Walt and Carol then moved to Springfield where Walt worked as an associate with the Neale and Newman Law Firm. Walt said the work was rewarding but the hours were hard as Mr. Neale wanted him to be at the office early and Mr. Newman wanted him to stay late.
In 1958 Walt and Carol moved to Aurora where he worked with talented lawyers, J. Hal Moore, Larry Meyer, Bob Keeter, Jack Steinle, and Joe Woodcock.
Walt worked as a general law practitioner, but concentrated his time on estate planning, probate, corporate and real estate law. He served thousands of clients over the 67 years of his legal career. He partnered with his son Scott for over 35 years. In 2013 Walt’s grandson James joined the practice. Walt always considered the practice of law as a labor of love. He was the model of honesty and integrity. He always treated his clients, the court staff, judges, and opposing counsel with the utmost respect and civility. He carried an active Missouri Bar card and business cards in his wallet to the day he died. Walt was an advocate to the end.
Walt has also been involved with several civic and service organizations. He was a board member and officer for the following clubs: Aurora Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Lions, Aurora Airport Board (where he and Dr. A.J. McCallum obtained the Hill Burton Grant to improve and expand the airport in the 1960’s), Aurora Little League (President), Aurora School Board (Chairman), Aurora Hospital Board, Aurora Industrial Development Board, a founding member of the Aurora Area Community Foundation, Union National Bank, Boatman’s Bank Board of Directors, Drury University Board of Trustees (serving as a member of the Finance Budget and Audit Committee), and served many years as a Elder, Deacon and Sunday School teacher at the First Presbyterian Church in Aurora. Walt was a member of Sigma Nu (Drury) and Phi Delta Phi (Mizzou).
Walt joined the Masons through the Canopy Lodge in Aurora in 1965 and later became a very active Shriner. He served as Potentate of Abou Ben Adhem in Springfield in 1974. He was the first “Pote” to reside outside of Greene County. He was recognized by the Scottish Rite Masonic organization in 1981 as a 33rd-degree Scottish Rite Mason. Walt was employed in 1980 by the International Shrine as Chairman of its Jurisprudence and Laws Committee. In this position he was lead counsel for all 23 Shriner’s Hospitals and Burn Institutes across the United States, Canada, and Mexico until in 2001. He delighted in helping children needing orthopedic treatment all over the world at no charge to the patient or family.
Walt has been honored with many awards over the years. He was named the Aurora Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year” in 1960, just two years after arriving in town. Since then, he has also received the Community Service Award, the Lloyd R. Ellis Award. In 2012, Walt was recognized with the prestigious “Missourian” Award for his outstanding contributions in business, service, and the arts. In 2023, Walt was elected to the Aurora Houn Dawg Hall of Fame.
Walt was an active golfer, fanatical supporter of the Aurora Houn Dawgs, the Drury Panthers, St. Louis Cardinals, Springfield Cardinals, and Kansas City Chiefs. He loved the time he spent with family and friends at Table Rock Lake.
A family reception/visitation will be held from 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2024, with a memorial service following at 3:00 p.m. at Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home of Aurora. Departed: 03/11/2024 (Aurora)
Obituary Preview: Donald Joe "Don" "Bro. Don" "Cy" Hilton of Aurora, Missouri was born December 21,1935 on top of the hill in Crane, Missouri. He passed away on March 9, 2024, after a sudden decline in his health. His official date of death is recorded as March 11, 2024, subsequent to the withdrawal from life support measures.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Wayne and Wilma Lee Hilton and infant brother Jimmy Wayne.
Don is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 59 years Freda (Watkins); son, Wayne (Vivian) Hilton; daughter, Gayle (Robert) Mattingly; grandchildren, Matthew Mattingly, Kaitlyn (Michael) Palmquist, Ashlee Mizer, Victoria Hilton and Lexie Hilton; great-grandchildren, Sora Mizer and Anakin Mizer; baby sister, Cheryl Ann Hilton Wilson Farless; nephew, James Farless; niece, Marti Kelley; great-nephew, Nicholas Kelley and great-nieces, Emily Kelley and Jessica (Zac) Almaraz, as well as many extended family and dear friends.
He was a proud Crane Pirate, Class of '53 where he was an outstanding three sport athlete (basketball, baseball, and football until they didn't have enough players to make a team) and had the good fortune there to meet Red Schoendienst and get a really nice signed photo which can still be found hanging in his office at home. His education and legendary sports career continued at Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo. '53, then Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Ok, '57 and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Dallas, TX. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Church Music with a minor in Piano and a minor in Mathematics. He could actually use a slide rule.
Bro. Don served his entire adult professional life wearing the many hats of a Southern Baptist church staffer, including, but not limited to, Minister of Music, Youth Minister, Senior Adults Minister, Ukelele Band Director, Choir Director, Youth Choir Director, Childrens' Choir Director, Head of Security, Substitute Church Secretary, Mimeograph operator, Sound Engineer and was licensed to Preach the Gospel and exercise his gifts in the work of the Ministry. He served at Clever FBC, Marionville FBC, Monett FBC, McGehee FBC where he served for 25 years and was the longest serving Minister of Music in Arkansas at the time of his retirement, and after a few weeks of relaxing retirement resumed his ministry at Southside Baptist 2003, serving there until called home. He sang as guest chazzan or cantor, in Hebrew, at Temple Meir Chayim in McGehee for many High Holy Days. He was often invited to sing slowly at Evening Star Baptist Church. He was the choral and band director at Spokane, Highlandville, Billings, Wheaton, and Exeter High Schools during the mid-1960s to early '70s. He never threw anything away, so his family is left with an eclectic mix of band instruments, ukeleles, choral music scores and a comprehensive selection of sacred music.
His alter-ego, Cy, was the ukelelist tenor for the world renowned, groundbreaking Hillbilly-Mock genre quartet known as The Booger Boys (they could really pick 'em out). He and his bandmates, Big Brown Savage on ukelele, Schroeder Cowan on jug and washtub bass, Linus Allen on singing saw and Ambrose McNeeley on guitar toured widely during 1957-60 and several raucous reunions.
