Obituary Preview: Martin Eldon Smith Martin was born November 18, 1931, in Chanute, KS, to Donavan Wise Smith and Elfleda Belle (Daggett) Smith. He passed away on April 15th at the age of 90. He was married in 1960 to Barbara Ann Glenn at Westside Evangelical United Brethren Church in Wichita, KS. Martin was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara, his parents, and his siblings (Forest, Marilyn, and Dale). He is survived by his children: Curtis (Luanne) Smith of Chicago, Stan (Laurie) Smith of Wichita, and Elizabeth (Ron) Hendricks of Wichita, and his grandchildren John Smith, Ryan Smith, Hannah Arellanes, Isaac Smith, Paul Hendricks, and Susan Muninger, and four great grandchildren. There will be no services at Martin's request. Martin attended public schools in Chanute, Kansas City, Coffeyville, and Concordia, KS, graduating from high school in 1949. He completed a Bachelor of Arts at York College, NE (1953), a Master of Education at Wichita State University (1965), and a Doctor of Education at The University of Wyoming (1970). He served in the U.S. Army (54-56); was a Field Representative for Westmar College (56-57); was an Assist. Sales/Rental Mgr. in Wichita (57-58); and was employed by the Wichita School District for 32 years (58-91). He retired in 1991. He was a teacher for seven years and a school administrator for 25 years; serving at Mayberry and Allison Jr. Highs, and at Heights and Southeast High Schools. He worked part-time at Wichita State, Newman, and Baker Universities. Other employment at different times of his life included: Grocery clerk, farm laborer, dishwasher, bookkeeper, ditch-digger, waiter, custodian, and oil field roustabout. Related Professional Service-Professional Practices Commission, KS St. Dept. of Ed. (5yrs.); Kansas State High School Activities Executive Board (4yrs.) and Board of Directors (8yrs.); Project Success (Univ. of Nebr. 1991) identified Martin as a "Highly Successful School Administrator" and included his responses in a study which involved over 400 administrators representing every state and territory. Professional Organizations-National Association of Secondary School Principals; Kappa Delta Pi (Hon. Soc.); Phi Delta Kappa (Prof. Frat.). Volunteer Activities after Retirement-Kansas St. High Sch. Activ. Assoc.: Hall of Fame Committee (91-95/Chair 2 yrs.); Sportsmanship Committee Chair at 6A basketball tournaments (92-94/3yrs.); represented the president of The University of Wyoming at the inauguration of a Wichita State University president; United Methodist Urban Ministry-volunteer (Board of Directors; Executive Board; Chair of Personnel Committee); and volunteer at Westside and Aldersgate United Methodist Churches in Wichita, KS. *The family would like to extend our gratitude to the staff at Oxford Grand Memory Care and to Traditions Health for their loving care and friendship to our father/grandfather.

September 19, 1961 – April 14, 2022 Mr. Johny “JB” Bair, who has been a resident of Kansas the past forty years, having lived the greater part of that time near Wichita, in Valley Center, Kansas has journeyed to his Lord and Savior.
Mr. Bair was born in Künzelsau, West Germany to Everett and Johanna Bair on September 19th, 1961. He became a Naturalized American in 1965 and lived most of his childhood in northern California. John was an accomplished mechanic, bringing to life old Volkswagens, Chevrolets and even aircraft. He graduated from college with a degree in Aviation Maintenance as was licensed as an FAA Airframe and Power Mechanic. His true gift was his empathy and compassion for the people that had left this world for a better place. He worked for 25+ years at Wilbert Vault Company providing services to many families throughout Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska as the gentleman that set the final resting place of their beloved. Regardless of rain or shine, he was going to be there for every family, every time!
Mr. Bair was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Johanna Bair. John was a man of solid character and trusted by all who knew him. He united with the Ashbury Church and as an accomplished drummer from his high school days, giving praise and glory with the clash of his cymbals (Psalm 150:4-6) and the beat of his drum to his Lord.
He was also a big part of the Wichita Fellowship Club (http://www.wichitafellowship.org/101club.htm) and loved to visit the 101 Club to fish. Having been a faithful Christian man Jesus said, "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give Thee a crown." Mr. Bair leaves to mourn his departure, his partner in life, Mary Jane Blum, 2 sons, Jerry Joseph of Maine and Shawn Michael of Wichita, 2 daughters, Christina Marie Ashbrook of Wichita and Chelsea Rose Bair of Newton, his brothers Karl Erich of Germany and Jerry Owen of California and his sister Susan Ann Bair of Texas. He has nine grandchildren and six nephews and nieces and many other relatives and a host of friends
Funeral services will be held at the 101 Club, 2206 E 101st St N, Valley Center, KS 67147, Saturday, April 23, at 10 A.M., conducted by Pastor James Gillespie, pastor of the Andover Baptist Church.
Mr. John Bair’s ashes will be laid to rest at the 101 Club, that he is forever remembered.

Obituary Preview: Carol Ann Allen, 81, retired Corporate Secretary/Treasurer, Allen Millwork Co. passed away Monday, April 11, 2022. Per Carol's wishes no Services will be held, and her body has been donated to KU School of Medicine for medical research. Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Jerry; son, Jay (Lisa) Allen; daughter, Cindy Allen; grandchildren, Matthew Allen and Megan (Jesus) Ornelas. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, John Cole and Bernice Gillig and her sister, Johnna Luck.
Carol Ann Cole was born October 9, 1940 to John and Bernice Cole in Great Bend, Kansas. She was raised as an only child for the first 5 years until her only sibling Johnna was born. Her mother's family was large and so she was raised amongst lots of fun and loving aunts, uncles and cousins. The family moved to Wichita in 1945 and when Carol went to junior high she met and fell in love with her future husband and life partner Jerry Allen. They were proud class of 1958 graduates of Wichita North High and enjoyed participating in reunions with their classmates. In the early years Carol helped to put Jerry through college at Wichita University and they soon added to the family with 2 children, Jay in 1963 and Cindy in 1966. Jay went on to go to college and graduated with honors which always made her proud.  He then married a beautiful girl, Lisa Hoover and they gave Carol and Jerry their only 2 grandchildren, Matthew and Megan.  Jay is now the third generation running Allen Millwork Co., the family business.  Cindy tried college but it didn't stick and she now has a second family with her career as a bartender at Savutes Italian Restaurant where she has been now for 29 years. As a young couple Carol and Jerry did their best to show the kids the country and they took many family trips to lots of fun and educational places.  Carol was a great vacation planner and always made sure that everyone was included in the fun wherever they went.  Most trips were in the family station wagon with the kids bickering in the backseat, but Carol always had car games for them to play to try to keep them occupied.  There was Table Rock Lake and Silver Dollar City, skiing in Colorado, trips to racetracks to watch SCCA road races and loads of museums and mini golf along the way.  On one trip she even found herself playing nurse when Cindy's mini-golf backswing smacked Jay on the bridge of his nose causing quite a bit of discomfort for him and mild hysteria in her.  Thankfully, Jerry always kept it together for them.  They were together through thick and thin for 61 years, or as they liked to say 122 years combined. After the kids were grown and gone they got to do more traveling as they liked it.  They traveled extensively to watch their beloved Shockers play baseball and basketball as far as California and Hawaii. One of her favorite trips was a cruise they took in Alaska.  She and Jerry also visited Europe.  They ended up traveling to all 50 states in their 61 years together and she counted every one of those years a blessing as she was with the love of her life. Carol had many bad years because of her health as far back as 1970. She was diagnosed with Cushings disease and had lung problems that ended up with her having to have her left lower lobe of her lung removed.  Later in her life after she'd overcome all of that she began having serious arthritic problems and was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.  Because of all these health problems she and Jerry both decided that on their deaths they would like to donate their bodies to science to possibly help someone in the future.  So, per her wishes there will be no other services.  A memorial fund is set up through the Arthritis Foundation.

Tonda was a loving daughter, sister, and mother of five children, and grandmother to eight grandchildren (David Schulte, Alex Schulte, Ben Schulte, Morgan Woods, Zack Woods, Nathan Woods, Aaron Woods, Jennifer Church), one great grandchild (Carter), and many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews. Tonda was born on October 2, 1950 in Winfield, Kansas, to Lemuel and Delia (Malone) Maynard. She lived in Arkansas City, Kansas growing up, then moved to Wichita in 1974 where she met and married the love of her life, Bob Carmichael, who is now deceased.
Tonda was preceded in death by her late husband, Bob Carmichael, her daughter, Sheila Church, brother, David Maynard, and her father, Lemuel Maynard. She is survived by her dearly loved companion, Doug Samuelson of Great Bend, Kansas, and four of her children, Kristina Schulte (Mark) of Sedgwick, Kansas; Patsy Woods (Jeff) of Pittsburgh, Kansas; Debbie Brandon, and Tim Monasmith (Ann) of Park City, Kansas; mother, Adelia Maynard of Wichita, Kansas; and five siblings, Mike Maynard (Terri) Sebring, Florida; Roxie Herrman (Harvey) of Wichita, Kansas; Connie Jordan (Matthew) of Hutchinson, Kansas; Vickie Fleming (Ed) of Wichita, Kansas; and J.R. Maynard of Wichita, Kansas.
Tonda loved Jesus, her Yorkie dogs (Ears I and Amy [gone to doggie heaven] and Ears II). She also loved to send greeting cards to her siblings, children, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. We will all miss receiving her beautiful cards in the mail, and the United States Postal Service will certainly miss her.
Tonda posted this on Facebook in October 2021. “The Lord laid this in my heart.” Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” Lamentations 3:22-24. As I scrolled through her Facebook over the last couple of days, there were many postings about Jesus, His love, and her love for her family friends. As the EMS attendants were wheeling Tonda out to the ambulance it was told that she lifted her arm up. Obituary Preview: Pat Alkire, 88, was born December 9, 1933 in Stroud, OK, later moving to Geneseo, KS and attending High School with siblings Donna and Larry. Next, he attended Fort Hays and KU, where he earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Pat was drafted into the Army in 1956 and for two years, he served as a Medic in Korea.  After being discharged, he moved to Wichita to start his life-long career as a Pharmacist. For many years, Pat worked at Skaggs Pharmacy and Osco Drug. He marred his first wife, DeeAnna Boltjes and they had four children - Laurel, Melanie, Michael and Heather.  In 2010, he married Charlotte Harris, who died in 2018.  Shortly after, Pat moved to Via Christi Ascension Village.  Pat enjoyed baseball and loved to support his Jayhawks in basketball.  He had a great sense of humor and was known to say "don't take wooden nickels."  Pat grew up in a very humble, conservative family, was taught the value of a dollar; he worked all of his life to earn and save money.  Pat rarely travelled, but he followed his grandkids everywhere for their events, dance classes, swimming lessons, and special moments. If you asked Pat how he was doing, he would always say: "I am fine" even if he wasn't feeling well. Pat was a blessing to his friends and family.
