What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to announce the death of a loved one and provide information about their life, achievements, and surviving family members. It also serves as a way to share funeral or memorial service details, allowing others to pay their respects and celebrate the person's life.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary. The writer should be someone who knew the person well and can provide accurate and meaningful information about their life.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details. You may also include a photo, quotes, or personal anecdotes to make the obituary more personalized.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. Keep in mind that longer obituaries may incur additional costs in print publications.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some print publications allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can help personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. They may have specific guidelines, forms, or online portals for submitting obituaries. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, edits can be made to online obituaries relatively easily. However, print publications may have stricter policies due to printing deadlines and space constraints. Check with the publication or platform for their specific editing policies.

How long will my online obituary remain active?

Can I include quotes in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose quotes that resonate with the person's values, personality, or sense of humor. Make sure they're properly attributed if they're not original phrases.

How do I handle errors in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately if you notice any errors in the published obituary. They may be able to correct it online or issue a correction notice in subsequent print editions.

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you want to republish an old obituary (e.g., on a special anniversary), check with the original publication or platform for their reprint policies. You may need permission or require additional payment for republication.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died unexpectedly?

Yes. When writing an obituary for someone who died young or unexpectedly, it's essential to be sensitive to the grieving family's emotions. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their passing.

Can I include pets in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families consider pets part of their family unit. If pets played a significant role in the deceased person's life, you can mention them in the obituary as surviving companions.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of someone's passing, often without biographical details. An obituary provides more comprehensive information about the person's life and achievements.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?
