Departed: 04/02/2024 (Metuchen)
Obituary Preview: In memory of our Dear Rafael, a devoted husband, excellent father, exemplary grandfather, uncle, brother and friend. A kind man who touched the lives of everyone who knew him. We say goodbye with a heavy heart to a remarkable soul that embodied love, kindness and unbreakable dedication to his family.
At the age of 20, he arrived in New York City, where he met his wife, Juana. A jack of all trades who knew a little about everything. He was a taxi driver, navigating through the bustling streets with skill and charisma. He was a superintendent in the maintenance of buildings, a real estate investor and worked at the Ford Motor Company in the paint department, this spoke of his versatility and work ethic.
Rafael found genuine pride and joy within the walls of his home, where he was a pillar of strength and love for his wife, children and grandchildren. He appreciated every moment he spent with his family, covering them with hugs, kisses and affection. His kind and selfless nature knew no limits.
He was a true problem solver who believed in self-sufficiency and often imparted his wisdom. Although perhaps it was possible that he did not have all the answers in advance, he had the determination and creativity to find solutions through trial and persistence. His hands were always ready to fix, repair and build, leaving a valuable legacy of ingenuity, inventiveness, love and laughter with his invaluable life lessons.
He is survived by his wife, Juana; his children, Leafar (wife Kim), Leazar (wife Stephanye), Oiluj (wife Carla) and Jezebelle (husband Kyle); and grandchildren, Savanna, Julianna, Jacob, Olivia, Jasmine, Brielle, Liani, Kameron and Syrus.
May our Lord Jesus guide him and direct his last steps with divine light and make his face shine on Him with a lot of Peace and confidence to dwell in eternity.
He was so special and even though he no longer walks by our side, his spirit will guide us and inspire us forever.
Rest in peace, Dear Rafael, knowing that your love will live in the hearts of all those who were blessed to know you.
Donations may be made in Rafael’s memory to Arbor Day Foundation.

Joan I. Arbeiter - May 08, 1937 - March 09, 2024

Departed: 03/09/2024 (Metuchen)
Obituary Preview: Joan Arbeiter, Parent, Educator, Mentor, Professional Artist, Dedicated Feminist
May 8, 1937 – March 9, 2024.
Long-time companion of the late Daniel Gerzog, (d. 2021), Joan is survived by her daughters Lisa Arbeiter of Mons, Belgium and Gail Goldstein of Ellicott City, Maryland, and her son-in-law Jamie Goldstein and three grandsons Daniel, Benjamin and Adam Goldstein, as well as her younger sister Priscilla Lindenauer formerly of Teaneck, NJ, her cousin Susan Dukess of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, and nieces and nephews.
Joan grew up in Brooklyn and from a very young age was enrolled in the Brooklyn Museum Art School for children, which planted the seeds for her lifetime in the arts. Joan attended Midwood High School (1951-1955) and Douglass College (1955-1958), earning her BS in Education from Brooklyn College (1959) and a diploma from duCret School of the Arts (1971) and a Masters of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute (1981).
Joan taught elementary school in Manhattan (1959-1963) before moving to Metuchen and raising her daughters with her former husband (Jay, m. 1958-1990), where she established the Joan Arbeiter Studio School (1976-1990). Joan was also a beloved Art Instructor and Foundations Coordinator at the duCret School of the Arts in Plainfield, NJ from 1983 until her retirement in 2015; there she mentored and taught many courses including Art Appreciation, Art History Survey & 20th Century Art History, Color and Design, and Acrylic Painting. Joan instructed 28 art programs for the NJ School of The Arts (1995-2002), as well as NJ Teen Arts Festivals (1998-2003) and other arts groups for children and adults (1989-2003), and over the years served as a Moderator, Panelist, Guest Lecturer, Guest Demonstrator, Coordinator, Jurist (Art Selection), and as a Consultant to Educational Testing Service in Princeton for Arts Propel (1988). Her noted accolades include the Elan Award for Mentoring and Lifetime Achievement from the Women’s Studio Center (2004) and the Excellence Award for HerStory from the Manhattan Arts Magazine (2000). Joan was primarily an acrylic painter but experimented with other media, and showed her artwork in countless juried, invitational and group shows, and dozens of solo exhibitions.
In many ways Joan was ahead of her time, and that was reflected in her artwork and exhibits. Her atypical art show called CAA Job Search Documentation exposed, in a creative and engaging manner, the absolute futility of women seeking tenured teaching posts at the University level. Her Aging Faces/Facing Aging series (a/k/a Aging is a Work of Art) used a self-invented process of monochrome acrylic wash in the fashion of watercolor, painted with cotton balls and cotton swabs, a clever solution that permitted her to capture her subject’s delicate fragility during one brief session. Her Abe Feeding Anna from this series became especially meaningful to her as she and Danny declined, and she lovingly renamed it Devotion. Some of Joan’s acrylic portraits incorporated life-stories taken directly from conversations with her models, their words carefully painted in appropriate colors. Her series known as The Vanishing Vista presented renditions of bucolic Ringoes, NJ landscapes, while juxtaposing some of those images with painstaking research about environmental poisoning and other dangers and warnings which we now take for granted. In her Street People: Portraits, with Biographical Narratives series, her homeless subjects literally lived under bridges and in cardboard boxes in Manhattan. Joan paid them to model for her, while giving them a voice by having them add their own stories in their own words by their own hand, directly onto the canvas. In her last major series, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Girl Fulfilling Society’s Limited Expectations, each three-dimensional multi-media work explored a distinct theme from the figurative “1950s Handbook”, featuring reproductions of her childhood photos and early married years, with found items, and vintage text and images.
Joan was a resident of Metuchen for 55 years, spending another six and a half years just across the border in Edison at Whispering Knoll (later Whispering Woods) on James Street. In the early years, she rang doorbells with the League of Women voters to help get more women registered to vote, helped raise money for the Douglass Alumnae club, collected money to support Theatre Six, collected money for building the original JFK hospital on James Street, and joined Temple Emanu-el just in time to help them found their synagogue building on James Street. (Ironically, the former has recently subsumed the latter.) When race wars were raging across the nation, her family attended interracial Brotherhood Suppers organized by the Metuchen Borough Advisory Coalition. During the Cold War, when a local charity sought local volunteers to help sponsor a Jewish refugee family from Kiev, her family was one of two who supported them long after the established year; the Kaufmans literally became an extension of the Arbeiter family, and this continues until this day. Joan sought out other opportunities to expose her daughters to international exchange. In lieu of hosting an exchange student (which never materialized), she and her family hosted Monica, a Swiss traveler/au pair for a few weeks, Werner, a German traveler who requested to meet Jews and experience Jewish culture for a weekend, a troupe of travelling Israeli dancers for an overnight, and a team of five Belgian girls stranded at her daughter Gail’s basketball camp in the Poconos. This last connection indirectly paved the path for her other daughter Lisa’s lifetime spent in Belgium.
Joan was also on the forefront of the trend which is now known as “together, apart”, long before it joined the common vernacular. She and Danny embraced their time together in her “country” townhouse in Metuchen and his “city” apartment bordering the Pratt campus in Brooklyn, but both equally welcomed just enough time apart each week to enjoy doing it all over again just a few days later. They were fully integrated into each other’s families as bonus grandparents. They especially enjoyed their time spent at Long Beach Island on the bay, and like many “LBI regulars”, had a standing annual rental, theirs being the last three weeks of May… even Joan’s senior tricycle was reserved for her annually during that time. That tradition continued until, sadly, coincidentally, and mercifully, both Danny and Joan became physically incapable of continuing that tradition during the exact same calendar year. Joan continued to visit Danny every month until the pandemic, and continued to phone Danny regularly until his death.
Joan Arbeiter’s correspondence and papers were accepted by the Miriam Schapiro Archives on Women Artists, a sub-collection of the Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries. Her materials primarily document writing Lives and Works: Talks with Women Artists, Volume II which she co-authored (Scarecrow Press 1996, which includes an interview with Miriam Schapiro herself), the establishment of the Ceres Gallery in in Manhattan (the first cooperative feminist art gallery of which she was an inaugural member, 1984), and many associations with the New York and New Jersey Feminist Women's Movement and how that relates to Feminist Art. The bulk of her art collection will be gifted to the Noyes Museum of Stockton University, Atlantic City, NJ, formerly of Oceanville, NJ. Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of the person's life and legacy, which can be valuable for genealogical research and historical preservation.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the deceased person's family members or close friends. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary, especially if they are handling the funeral arrangements.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies or interests, surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform where it will be published. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?
