Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral home's website to inform friends, family, and community of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help facilitate communication among friends and family, provide closure, and offer a sense of community during a difficult time.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template to guide the process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, city of residence, and surviving family members. It may also include details about their occupation, hobbies, achievements, and any notable accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for a length of around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide all necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms and websites that allow you to publish an obituary. These can include funeral home websites, social media sites, and dedicated obituary websites like Legacy.com or ObitsArchive.com.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the platform or newspaper. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for print publication, while online publication may be free or low-cost.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after it's been published. However, this may depend on the specific policies of the publication or platform.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration for which an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep it available indefinitely, while others may remove it after a certain period of time.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes, it's common to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary. This allows friends and family to make a donation in memory of the deceased instead of sending flowers.

What is a memorial service versus a funeral service?

A funeral service typically takes place shortly after death and involves the presence of the body. A memorial service, on the other hand, can take place at any time and focuses on celebrating the person's life without their physical presence.

How do I write a good obituary?

To write a good obituary, focus on capturing the essence of the person's life and personality. Be honest, sincere, and respectful in your writing, and try to include unique anecdotes or stories that showcase their character.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including humor or lighthearted moments in an obituary can help celebrate the person's personality and make the tribute more engaging and relatable.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're having trouble writing an obituary, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member. You can also seek guidance from a funeral home or crematorium staff member.

Can I republish an old obituary?

In some cases, yes. If you want to republish an old obituary for anniversary of death or another significant occasion, contact the original publication or platform to inquire about their republication policies.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search for old obituaries through online archives like Newspapers.com or GenealogyBank.com. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to historical records and archives.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

Yes. When writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly, be sensitive to the emotional impact on family and friends. Focus on celebrating their life and achievements while avoiding graphic details about their passing.

How do I handle conflicting opinions within the family when writing an obituary?

In situations where there are conflicting opinions within the family, try to find common ground and focus on honoring the person's life rather than getting bogged down in disagreements. Consider seeking mediation from a trusted third party if necessary.

What if I need to correct misinformation in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately to report any errors or inaccuracies. They will work with you to correct the mistake as quickly as possible.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Yes! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. Just be mindful of privacy settings and respect for family members' wishes.

Are there any cultural or religious considerations when writing an obituary?

Absolutely! Be sensitive to cultural and religious traditions when writing an obituary. Research specific customs or protocols that may apply to ensure respect for the deceased and their loved ones.
