Rosaria "Sarina" Scalora - October 01, 1934 - February 08, 2024

Departed: 02/08/2024 (Wilmington)
Obituary Preview: Rosaria "Sarina" Scalora passed away peacefully with her family by her side on February 8, 2024.  Sarina was born to Carmela LoGuidice and Francesco D’Arro in Calatabiano, Sicily on October 1, 1934.  Raised in Sicily during World War II, she went to school until 5th grade then learned to sew, helping her family survive by working as a seamstress. After the war, she immigrated to the United States where she took up residence in Wilmington, Delaware. Using the skills she learned in Sicily, she quickly found work as a seamstress, making alterations to wedding dresses. Soon after immigrating, she was reunited with her childhood sweetheart, Joseph from their hometown in Sicily.  They married in 1962 and moved to Eddystone, Pennsylvania. In 1966, they moved to Wilmington, Delaware where they raised their two children, Carmela and Mario.
Sarina worked to ensure her family was prosperous and cared for. Although she did not work outside of the home, she was a true partner to her husband and was instrumental in the many ventures and success throughout their life. She always managed to make sure her husband, children, and her parents were taken care of. In the early 1980’s she and her husband purchased a seasonal rental property “Sarina Apartments” in Wildwood, New Jersey. Sarina met and became friends with people from all over the world.  Spending summers in Wildwood brought her much joy and happiness.
For Sarina, food was love. She was a frugal shopper but was always able to create amazing meals for her family and anyone who stopped by. When you walked into her home, the first thing you frequently smelled was a pot of tomato sauce simmering on the stove. She could effortlessly turn a meal for four into a feast for eight or more and it was always delicious. Her tomato sauce was amazing and in 1998 she won best homemade sauce in the Wildwood Mama Mia Italian Festival.  During the holidays, she would make that sauce with meatballs and stuffed shells and deliver it to the doctors and staff who helped take care of her and Joseph. Each Christmas Eve was always special for her. She loved being with her family as they enjoyed the meals and pastries she prepared for them. Being together as a family and sharing a meal together meant everything to her. As she cooked, she loved sharing her recipes with her children and grandchildren. Her ability to cook simply but abundantly and deliciously was truly amazing.
Later in life, when she wasn’t cooking for her family, she enjoyed watching the Philadelphia Phillies on TV. She was always ready to cheer their victories and scowl at their losses. She shared this passion with her family, who were always ready to sit down with her and enjoy a game.
Sarina adored her husband of 59 years and was proud of her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments.  She worked hard all her life, but nothing was more important to her than family.  During her retirement, she and her husband, Joseph, spent the summers in Wildwood, New Jersey and the winters in Orlando, Florida, where she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, dancing, playing cards, and cooking.  She led a very full life surrounded by friends and family who will miss her dearly.
Sarina is survived by her children, Carmela Skomorucha (David) and Mario Scalora of Wilmington, DE, her grandchildren, Lauren (Sam), Adam (Morgan), Caroline & Charlotte.
In addition to her parents, Sarina was preceded in death by her husband Joseph and brother Guiseppe D’Arro.
A Mass of Christian Burial Will be Celebrated for Sarina on Saturday February 17, 2024 at 10:30am in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 9th & Dupont Street, Wilmington, DE.  Family and Friends are invited to a visitation, prior to Mass, starting at 9:00am in St. Anthony’s Church.  Internment will follow Mass in Cathedral Cemetery.

Salvador Avila Gongora - February 02, 1961 - February 05, 2024

Departed: 02/05/2024 (Wilmington)
Obituary Preview: It is with a very heavy heart that the Fair Hill Training Center community bids farewell to Salvador Avila Gongora known most simply as “Chava” or to English language folks as “Chubba.”
Chava celebrated his 63rd birthday 2 days prior to his death Monday 2/5/24 at Fair Hill doing what he always did – showing up and taking care of his equine friends.  Chava was an extraordinarily kind and gentle man who was loved by both horses and people with friendships that spanned over 30 years in the area.  He worked with Michael Dickinson Racing for 20 years until Michael’s retirement and had many wonderful horses in his care over that period; but perhaps his best-known charges were Cetawayo and Bowman Mill, both multiple Graded stakes winners.
The next 10 years of his work life was with Lady Olivia at North Cliff farm splitting his time between the youngsters offsite and Carla Morgan’s training operation in Parlo III at Fair Hill.  On the fateful day Chava had mucked his stalls and was walking a horse in the shed when suddenly he collapsed and never recovered.  He received immediate CPR and defibrillation from his co-workers and FHTC staff until the EMTs arrived soon after and took over the resuscitation efforts, but it was not to be . . .
Salvador Avila Gongora (Chava) leaves behind Ludubina Solis, his wife of 35 years , a son Jose Ma, a daughter Yamilet Avila, and  4 grandchildren.  The funeral service will be held 3-5 pm Thursday February 15th at Corleto-Latina Family Center 807 N. Union St. Wilmington DE 19805 (302-273-8508) with a small reception after.  Chava’s family will meet him again in Mexico to bury him in his home country. Needless to say Chava’s premature departure precluded much planning and the family would be very grateful for any kindness and support we are able to offer.  A  GoFund Me has been set up @ https://gofund.me/eb908642   “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” —Aesop In closing some words for Chava from singer Kenny Chesney . . .”It ain't fair you died too young, like a story that had just begun.  But death tore the pages all away.  God knows how we miss you.”

She loved listening and dancing to the music of John Legend and shopping. May she rest in Peace Come to Me
God saw you were getting tired, and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around you and whispered, “Come to Me.” With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you pass away.  Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay.  A Golden Heart stopped beating, hard working hands to rest.  God broke our hearts to prove that he only takes the best. Acknowledgements
We wish to extend our sincere appreciation for the great kindness shown to us in our time of sorrow.  The many expressions of sympathy continue to be a source of comfort and will be remembered with immense gratitude. May God Bless and Keep you!

Departed: 12/17/2023 (Wilmington)
Obituary Preview: Josephine P. Silvestri, of Wilmington, passed away suddenly in her home on Sunday, December 17, 2023.  “Jo” made a major life change, leaving Wilmington and moving to Maryland at the age of 93 to be closer to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. This was a brave move but those who knew Jo, would not be surprised to hear, she made friends and adjusted to her new home quickly.
She was born in Wilmington on March 9, 1928, to the late Sebastiano and Edith (Susi) Pupillo. Jo was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Nick “Nicky Dazz” Silvestri in 2013, her son, Lawrence, her brothers Paul, Joe and Mario and her sister, Marguerite Wyre.
In the 1940’s, Jo worked in her dad’s corner grocery store in East Wilmington and it was here that she developed her work ethic. After graduating from Wilmington High School in 1945, Jo began working as a secretary for several Magistrate Judges in the U. S. District Court of Delaware where she remained until 1966.  Later, she took her secretarial skills to the DuPont company until she retired in 1996.
Jo devoted much of her time volunteering at St. Anthony’s, her parish home, the Ministry of Caring, Ronald McDonald House and St. Francis Hospital.  Jo was a great organizer and social chairman.  She and Nick planned many trips for their friends, card games and outings for their families to enjoy.  With her son and daughter-in-law, Jo and Nick hosted many day-trips to see Broadway Shows in New York City.

Josephine was a very spiritual and devout Roman Catholic, never missing Mass and praying the rosary daily.  She maintained her membership in the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality at St. Anthony’s, even after her move to Maryland. She believed that prayer and sacrifice could accomplish miraculous outcomes when made in the honor of the Lord.  She supported the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales throughout her life.
Josephine’s greatest joy in life was being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  To all three of her children, she was unconditionally devoted and supportive.  She formed a special bond with all her grandchildren by freely sharing her time and love.  With each of her 8 great grandchildren, Josephine had a special smile and touch.

After attending Richard Stockton University, he honorably served in the United States Navy and the Navy Reserves for twenty-five years. During that time, Gilbert spent a tour on board a submarine tender, which took him to many ports of call throughtout Europe and the Middle East. He especially loved visiting Spain. Gibert’s joy was his wife, children, and family. He had a wonderful sense of humor. Gilbert enjoyed playing his guitar; and worshipping at his brother Jerry’s church, singing and praying. Gilbert took to heart these two verses from the Bible; Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith,” and John 11:25-26, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though they die, and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.”

Gary Alan Gleason - February 02, 1973 - December 09, 2023

Departed: 12/09/2023 (Wilmington)
Obituary Preview: Gary Alan Gleason, age 50, of Wilmington, DE passed away on Saturday, December 9, 2023. Gary was born in Milford, DE on February 2, 1973. He graduated from Milford High School. Following right after, Gary  served for four years with the U.S. Air Force during Desert Storm, after which he received an honorable discharge. He loved his country and being a veteran. He was a proud member of the Diamond State VFW Post 2863 since 2009,  and a Commander there from June 2023 until his passing.
He went on to attend Delaware Technical and Community College, where he obtained two Associate degrees, in Culinary Arts and Food service Management Technology. He had a very long, successful career in the hospitality industry ranging from restaurants to schools. Most recently, Gary was with Colonial School District for the past 5 years as the Nutrition Service manager, where he was not only a huge part of the three schools he served, but also made sure to do his best to celebrate every student he came across and to put a smile on their faces – even if that meant dressing up as a turkey during Thanksgiving or Santa Clause himself.
Gary had a love for many things: Philly sports, especially his Eagles, he loved cooking and trying new restaurants, listening to music and DJing for different events, but most of all, Gary loved his big (loud) orange Harley Davidson and being a part of charity work – even more so when he could combine the two. Gary participated in bike runs over the last 12 years and he loved every minute of it. To say that Gary enjoyed spending time with his family and friends would be an understatement; they were his entire world. Gary will be greatly missed by all those who knew him, who got to experience his terrible dad jokes, who rode with him, and those who truly got to experience him in his element.
Gary is survived by his wife of nearly 27 years, Kathleen (Jacobi) Gleason; his parents, James and Bonnie Gleason; his two stepchildren, Michael Jacobi and Lyndse Marriott (Alex), and grandson, Rowan; his siblings, Heather Gleason (Frank), Michael Gleason (Sara), Mark Gleason (Jackie), and Elizabeth Gleason (Rob); and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, sister and brother- in-laws, and beloved friends. Gary is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Joseph and Delores Marvel and his paternal grandparents Charles and Clara Gleason.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, and online guestbooks.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries may be longer and more detailed than those published in print.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are typically published in local newspapers, online obituary websites, funeral home websites, and social media platforms. They may also be printed on funeral programs, prayer cards, or other memorial materials.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication and the length of the notice. Some online obituary websites offer free or low-cost options, while print newspapers may charge by the word or line.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, you can write your own obituary in advance. This is often referred to as a "self-written" or "pre-written" obituary. It can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include photos or videos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary websites and funeral homes allow you to upload photos and videos to accompany the written notice. This can help celebrate the person's life and provide a more personal tribute.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. You may need to provide written proof of death, such as a death certificate or funeral home documentation.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made to an obituary once it has been published in print. However, online obituaries may be editable or updated with corrections or additional information.

How long are obituaries kept online?

The length of time an online obituary remains available varies depending on the website or platform. Some sites may keep them archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

Can I request a correction to an obituary?

If you find an error in an obituary, contact the publication or funeral home that originally published it. They will work with you to correct the mistake and reprint or update the notice accordingly.

What is an online guestbook?

An online guestbook is a digital space where friends and family can leave messages of condolence, share memories, and pay tribute to the deceased. These messages are often preserved as part of the online obituary.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This allows friends and family to make a meaningful contribution in memory of the deceased.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries to access historical records. Many genealogy websites and databases also provide access to archived obituaries.

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you can republish an old obituary. Be sure to verify any necessary permissions or rights before doing so.

What is the purpose of an obituary archive?

An obituary archive preserves historical records of deaths and provides a valuable resource for genealogists, researchers, and individuals seeking information about their ancestors or loved ones.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died long ago?

Yes, even if someone passed away many years ago, you can still write an obituary as a tribute to their memory. This can be especially meaningful for those who were never formally recognized with an obituary at the time of their passing.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an LGBTQ+ inclusive obituary?

Yes, when writing an LGBTQ+ inclusive obituary, it's essential to respect the individual's gender identity, sexual orientation, and relationships. Use language that reflects their authentic self and acknowledges their loved ones.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If you're unsure about including sensitive information such as cause of death or personal struggles, consult with family members or close friends to determine what is appropriate to share publicly.

Can I write an anonymous obituary?

In general, it's not recommended to write an anonymous obituary. Obituaries are meant to be a public tribute to the deceased, and anonymity may detract from their significance. However, exceptions may apply in cases where privacy concerns are paramount.
