Wayne Russell Johnson - October 04, 1955 - August 01, 2023

Departed: 08/01/2023 (Wichita)
Obituary Preview: Wayne Russell Johnson, of Wichita, Kansas, died Aug. 1, 2023, at age 67 after a sudden illness.
Wayne was born Oct. 4, 1955, in Elgin, Illinois, the second son of Dorothy Eleanor (Barr) Johnson and Stanley Wayne Johnson.
He was one of seven siblings and is survived by brother David Johnson and sister-in-law-Eunice Johnson, Waukesha, Wisconsin; brother Barry Johnson, Springfield, Missouri; sister Robin Redwing and brother-in-law Frank Redwing, Springfield, Missouri; sister Carla Whittaker and brother-in-law Kent Whittaker, Omaha, Nebraska; sister Monica Morgan and brother-in-law John Morgan, Fenton, Missouri; sister Laura Johnson, Springfield, Missouri; and his two biological children, Jamie Dixon and Jeremiah Meyer-O'Day, both of Wisconsin, as well as his uncle Charles Barr of New York and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and grandchildren. Both parents preceded him in death.
Wayne grew up largely in Wisconsin, with the family living in several different towns including West Bend and the Horicon and Rubicon areas, before relocating to Springfield, Missouri when he was age 17.
He spent time during the summers in the Ozarks with paternal grandparents Hester and Lowell Johnson.
He attended Hillcrest High School in Springfield but ventured out on his own at a young age, returned to Wisconsin as a young man and spent a number of years working and traveling with carnivals as far away as Venezuela. True to his ‘60s upbringing and ‘70s young adulthood, he considered himself a hippie and embraced a countercultural lifestyle including a rejection of authority and “the system,” a joyful outlook on life and a fondness for cannabis.
Wayne was an early adoptor of personal computers (Commodore 64 era) and an active participant on bulletin board systems, a precursor of the modern internet. This was an enduring interest, as Wayne went on to study computer science in his 60s.
In the 1990s, Wayne became a caretaker for his Grandma Hester for a number of years and eventually settled in Wichita, where she was from. He worked for a computer shop and also as a mechanic for Gabby’s Goodies, where he helped maintain a fleet of ice cream trucks.
Wayne almost always made it “home” to Springfield for Christmas at Mom’s, sometimes arriving overnight and always accompanied by a dog or two. He was a dog lover and trusted their judgment of other people.
During his years in Wichita, Wayne developed a network of close friendships including with an elderly cousin, Pete Redmond, with whom he went out to dinner almost every night. Wayne had a kind heart and a habit of “adopting” people in need including the homeless, even when his own circumstances were challenging. Wayne had some worrisome health challenges in recent years, including almost losing a leg due to a bout with COVID and suffering a severe dog bite on his arm while he was working under a car. Though he was encouraged to move to the Ozarks to be near the support of his siblings, Wayne stayed in Wichita where he lived life on his own terms, beholden to no one. His trademark phrase was ‘Keep smiling, it helps!”
The family will gather for a celebration of life on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, his birthday week. Wayne was loved, and he will be missed. Rest in peace, brother.

Jesse A. Berlin - February 24, 1959 - July 06, 2023

Departed: 07/06/2023 (Wichita)
Obituary Preview: Jesse Alan Berlin, 64, was born February 24, 1959 to Jerry and Dorothy Berlin. He graduated from West High School, in the class of '77. Jesse joined his Heavenly Father on July 6th, 2023, peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.
In life Jesse was a lover of all things outdoors, an avid sports enthusiast, but above all, a dedicated family man and faithful child of God. Jesse poured his heart and soul into everything he did. "Take pride in your work" were the words he lived by, and it showed in every facet of his life. He came from a proud heritage of hardworking family business owners. At the age of 10, he leapt at the opportunity to get to work, and took his first steps towards a life of entrepreneurship as a landscaper, salesman, real estate agent, even a boxing coach. Jesse was a man of many hats who never shied away from new prospects.
When he wasn't working, you might find him tending his garden, ministering to his fellow man, cheering from the stands of his family's athletic events, or maybe casting a line in the waters of his favorite fishing spot.
Jesse let the teachings of the Lord guide his way through life. Living by verses like Proverbs 18:21, which taught him to respect the power of the tongue. Jesse used his words to spread God's love and uplift all around him. He passes on his values to his children and his children's children.
While his worldly presence will be sorely missed, his loved ones will carry his torch to keep those values alive forever. Preceded in death by: his father Jerry, and his brother Tim. May they be united in Heaven. Jesse is survived by: his wife Latoya, mother Dorothy, sister Teri, daughters Ashley, Audrey, and Alivia, son Justus, and grandchildren: Kyatt, Dakota, Kayel, Cora, and Cooper. They will keep his teachings and serve as a vessel for his love to live on.
A celebration to commemorate Jesse's life will be held at 10:00AM, on Saturday, July 15th, at New Covenant Church, 1710 W Douglas, Wichita KS 67203.
Memorials may be given in Jesse’s honor to New Covenant Church. The service will be live streamed at: https://www.facebook.com/NewCovenantChurch.wichita https://www.youtube.com/@newcovenantumc4806

Michael Edward Fontayne - June 23, 1965 - July 01, 2023

Departed: 07/01/2023 (Wichita)
Obituary Preview: In Loving memory of Michael Edward Fontayne. Born June 23, 1965 and passed away July 1, 2023. He just turned 58. Michael was faced with challenges early in life, when it was discovered at the age of 10 he had a brain tumor that rendered him blind, along with other health complications. Though Mike was on the quiet side, he was strong and met his challenges head on. He went to the New Jersey Institute of Technology and graduated the Computer Sciences for the Visual Disabled Program. He went on to create websites for organizations that catered to the blind. He also owned and operated a luncheon café at the courthouse in New Brunswick, NJ Michael married Susan Mc Million in 2003 and along with her daughter, Mary-Anne, shared a
fulfilling life together in Wichita, KS. Susan, who is also blind, shared a deep connection with Michael and they had a true love for each other. A bond many would be envious of. Michael, Susan, Mary-Anne along with a few furry pets would greet mom and I when we visited from NJ., we bore witness to a truth and happiness in their home. It was remarkable. We witnessed how love and their Christian faith helped them through the many obstacles they faced in life.
They raised their daughter Mary-Anne well, as she went on to graduate the University of Wichita. She has been a true gift from God caring for her mom and dad many years. Her sacrifice did not go unnoticed or unappreciated by our whole family. Michael’s health has been in decline in recent years due to the 50 years of medications he needed to be alive. He has been in and out of the hospital, each time fighting his way back home to Susan and Mary-Anne. This last time he lost his battle he’s been so bravely waging with this unfair life he was given.
Mike was a cerebral, well read, funny, gentle man. He loved music, movies as well as gaming online with other visually challenged friends. He loved his wife and daughter most of all, and I’m happy he got to share 20 years with them. Our mom was devoted to doing her best to make him happy, feel loved and cared for. Mike was grateful to have experienced the people that he met on his journey that really cared.
I’ll think of my little brother everyday until I draw my last breath. Your pain is over Mikey-boy. Open your eyes and see the glory of heaven, mom and dad are waiting for you.
Friends and family who will miss you dearly Michael...... his wife, Susan and daughter, Mary-Anne Fontayne, brother, Gene Engelman and his wife Linda, nephews: Chris and Ryan, first wife and forever friend, Peggy Osbahr Fontayne, best friend ever, Tresann Crapis, fun times in LBI, Tony Vescio, online buddies and Wichita friends, and me, Anthony, I’ll see you again my brother. You were so much wiser and could see life much clearer than I.
Kiss Mom, Dad, Grandma and Wee for me.
