Obituary Preview: Marie “Celina” Garcia Toivanen passed away on April 25, 2022.
She was born in the small village of San Jose, New Mexico on July 2, 1939 to Frutoso and Magdalena (Gallegos) Garcia.  Throughout childhood, Marie wanted to be a teacher.  She would gather the kids in San Jose and teach them lessons in various subjects. Some of her peers remember this and have thanked her for those lessons.
Marie attended elementary school in San Jose and graduated from Las Vegas Robertson High School.  She received her BA and MA degrees from New Mexico Highlands University.  She did post-graduate work at UNM and NMSU.  After graduating from Highlands, she moved to Grants, New Mexico to commence a teaching career that lasted 48 years. She taught at Sierra Vista, Mesa View, St. Teresa of Avila and Mt Taylor Schools.  Her favorite subject to teach was reading.  She was an excellent reading teacher, and she loved children.  Many former students have fond memories of Ms. Toivanen.  Marie was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma (Psi Chapter), life member of the National Education Association, American Federation of Teachers, International Reading Association, Grants Cibola County Association of Educational Retirees, and New Mexico Retired Teachers Assoc. Marie received the St. Jerome medal for Outstanding Catholic School Teacher in 2002.  She was named to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers by one of her former students. She was a Ham Radio Operator and was a member of the Upper Rio FM Society.
Marie was the keeper of the family memories, and she was considered the family historian. She had a great sense of humor, and would recall many of her childhood antics, making everybody laugh.  Marie had an excellent command of the Spanish language and was often called upon to translate for many people and businesses in different situations.  She was very proud of the fact that she alone raised her two children and made sure they both acquired a college education.  She is survived by her son Dwayne Toivanen and wife Marlene of Grants, NM, and her daughter Aili Toivanen and partner Frank Jaramillo of Houston, TX.  She is also survived by her beautiful grandchildren that she adored:  Aleena Macumber, Jacob Macumber, Nathan Conway, Olivia Marie Toivanen and Ava Aili Toivanen. She is  survived by her siblings:  Joe D. Garcia, Jerry Garcia and wife Frances of Grants,  sister-in-law  Elia McComie of Washington, D. C., special nephew Marvin Bustos and partner Marcella; her special nieces:  Ruth Hambright,  Dorothy Otero and Debra Estrada as well as by many other wonderful nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Jose F. Garcia, Jimmy Garcia and Ray Garcia; sister Bella Garcia; sisters-in-law Francis Garcia, Vera Garcia and Isabel Garcia; and nieces Donna Garcia and Sally Montoya.  A Rosary Service will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at 7:00 PM at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at 10:00 AM followed by interment at Grants Memorial Park at Noon.  A reception will be held at the Knights of Columbus following the internment.

A Rosary will be recited on Saturday April 30, 2022, at 9:30 AM at St Francis of Assisi Church in Gallup, New Mexico. A Mass Will be Celebrated following the rosary at 10:00 AM by Reverend Josh Mayer. With Internment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Gallup.

His sister Teresa Blea and Herman Vialpando of Bernalillo, NM and sister Jo Ann Polinski and husband Joseph of Spring Lake, North Carolina. Grandchildren Mitchell and Trevor Warr and Riane, Liam and Peyton Mirabal. In-laws Gloria and Gerry Weddle and Sally Zamora Tim and Denise Lujan, Jill Lujan, Troy and Walter Sarracino, Patricia and Jo Romansky. Further survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He is Preceded in death by his Parents Jesus and Alvina Blea. Albert Blea was a proud Vietnam Veteran. He worked for over 30 years in telecommunications. He retired from the telephone company and then became a Cibola County School Bus driver for over ten years and was an owner of JJ’s Snack Shack at NMSU-Grants Branch for eleven years. Albert’s proudest accomplishments were his time in Vietnam as a load-master for the Air Force, being a husband, father and grandpa. People will remember his many great stories, his graceful dance abilities which he shared with his wife and his pride in his daughters, son-in-laws and grandchildren. He enjoyed reading, welding art pieces for his wife June, telling fantastic stories about Vietnam, his father and the history of Grants, and making the best red chile in the Blea and Sanchez family. He was devoted to his faith and family. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him. On Friday April 22, 2022 at St. Teresa Of Avila Catholic Church a Rosary will be recited at 9:30 AM, Then at 10:00AM a Mass will be celebrated by Deacon Timo Lujan. VFW Post #3221 will be providing Military Honors. The Internment will take place on Friday July 15, 2022 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:30PM. Honorary Pallbearers will be His Grandchildren Riane Mirabal, Liam Mirabal, Peyton Mirabal,Trevor Warr and Mitchell Warr. Cope Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements

She is survived by three sons; Eddie Gonzales Sr. and his wife Gloria. Timmy Gonzales and his wife Antoinette Sanchez-Gonzales. David Gonzales and his fiancé Anna Hardy. 13 grandchildren; Naomie, Eddie Jr., Trey, Sylvan, Anthony, Celeste, Davin, Dawson, Marcus, Nicholas, Christan, Matthew, and Travis. Three great-grandchildren; Isaiah, Natalie, and Kai. Her sister; Marvella Gonzales and her husband Felix. Her Brother in-laws; Florencio Gonzales and his wife; Isabel. Thomas Gonzales and his wife Juanita. And Gene Chavez. Along with numerous other nephews, nieces, and God-children that also survive her.
She was preceded in death by her husband Eloy Gonzales Jr. A son; Norman Gonzales. Her parents; Frutoso and Rufina Martinez. A brother; Gilbert Martinez. A sister; Christine Martinez. Her in-laws; Eloy Sr. and Onecima Gonzales. Brother in-law; Jerry Gonzales. Sister in-law; Diana Chavez. Two nephews; Jerry Gonzales, Mickey Gonzales and his wife Mary Ellen and baby Justin.
On Tuesday March 22, 2022 at St. Vivian’s Catholic Church in Milan, a viewing will be begin at 6:00 PM then a Rosary will be recited at 700 PM. On Wednesday March 23, 2022 also at St. Vivian’s Catholic Church a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am by Father John Paul Sauter. Interment will follow at Grants Memorial Park.
Pallbearers include; Eddie Gonzales Sr., Timmy Gonzales, David Gonzales, Marcus Gonzales, Anthony Gonzales, and Eddie Gonzales Jr.
