Norma Jean German - January 21, 1932 - January 07, 2024

Departed: 01/07/2024 (Winchester)
Obituary Preview: At the age of 91, there aren’t enough pages in a newspaper to fully depict the beauty and adventure of someone’s full life—but we will try.
Norma Jean “Skip” German, 91, of Gifford and originally from Roodhouse, died peacefully on Sunday (January 7, 2024) at Country Health Care & Rehab after years of comfort and care from her loved ones.
Skip was born on January 21, 1932, in Roodhouse, IL., to Norma and Harry Vinyard, where she learned the importance of taking care of the people around her. She was a 1949 graduate of Roodhouse High School where she was a cheerleader for the Railroaders. In her early twenties, one of Skip’s friends decided to play matchmaker and encouraged her to write a few letters to someone she knew in a neighboring town. In typical Skip fashion, those letters were full of sass and enough charm that the man reading them said, “I must meet her.”
A short time later when he was home on leave from the Navy, Ben Hepworth married Skip on November 10, 1951, and they began building a life together. One founded on spoiling each other with love.
In 1953, the two welcomed the arrival of their first daughter, Sheila Marie. A couple of short years later in 1955, three became four and another baby girl joined the family, Gail Ann. Lucky for Ben, not only were the girls spitting images of their mother, but the sass quickly followed too. For years, the military family packed and unpacked their lives in new cities, states, and countries around the world. Skip had a special talent for making each place feel like home. Within a day, pictures would be hung on the walls and friends would be made. A common family phrase was “Home is where you hang your hat.”
Throughout her life, Skip found many ways to stay busy and working, both in and out of the home. After spending years with the girls at home, she worked on the many military bases where they traveled.
No matter where they were, Skip made it a priority to find a church for the family and was an active and cherished member of each congregation she joined.
Eventually, they found their permanent home in Gifford, Illinois.
In 2001, just a few months shy of 50 years together, Ben died peacefully with Skip and his daughters by his side after a brave battle with cancer. Though their time together was cut far too short, their marriage and life together was full—of lessons, of laughter, of love.
A few years later, not looking for it, but following it, Skip got what many people her age go without—the opportunity to love and be loved again. She married Clyde German of Gifford and happily welcomed a bonus family as her own.
For Skip, “the more, the merrier” was a true pillar of life. Whether you were old family, new family, long-time friends, or friends to-be, you were welcome.
Together, Skip and Clyde spent nine years together traveling—many times to Hawaii, many more times to (what felt like) thousands of school and sporting events for their many grand- and great-grandchildren—before Clyde passed away in 2014.
Whether teaching English as a second language or creating crafts for family and friends, Skip radiated a rare gentleness in everything she did. But of all her pastimes, her greatest joy was ensuring the well-being and happiness of those around her.
Skip will be remembered as kind, selfless, and of course, a little bit sassy.
She is survived by daughters Sheila (Daryl) Carlson of Gifford and Gail (John) Haire of O’Fallon; grandchildren Nicole (Jeff) Peck of Gifford, Derrick (Amber) Carlson of Oxford, Ohio, Jay (Lauren) Haire of Glenview, Lauren (Steve) Souders of O’Fallon; great-grandchildren Lea, Weston, and Andrew Peck, Hannah and Alex Carlson, James Haire, and Christopher, Ian, and Nora Souders; and siblings who fondly referred to her as “Skippy,” Charlotte Driver of Roodhouse, Dorothy Hinegardner of Pontiac, John Rhodes of Bentonville, Ark., and Mariann Rhodes of Mattoon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by many members of her bonus including stepchildren Gregory (Lisa) German of Golden Valley, Minn., Gary German of Villa Grove, Rhonda (David) Bletscher of Gifford, and Barbara Kettner of Gifford; 12 step grandchildren; and 16 step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two step great-grandchildren.

William Dale Fletcher - October 04, 1932 - January 01, 2024

Departed: 01/01/2024 (Winchester)
Obituary Preview: William Dale Fletcher was born at his family home east of Winchester, IL, on Oct. 4, 1932, a date which resulted in him responding, “10-4, good buddy” when asked his birthday for as long as his children remember. His parents were William Lee and Flora Jackson Fletcher, both deceased.
He died with hospice care on January 1, 2024, at Gower Convalescent Center in Gower, MO, after a two-year stay with his daughter and her family in St. Joseph, MO. Bill (also Willy, Willy Bill, Wild Bill, dad and grandpa) lived for 91 years, almost entirely within a mile of where he was born.
Bill was the third consecutive generation of first-born male William Fletchers in his line, the first having been born in England, all three having lived together in the same house east of Winchester for a time.
Due to being born in the midst of the Great Depression and his father’s disabling rheumatoid arthritis, Bill took on the duties of the family farm with his brother, Charlie, and their strong mother, while he was still in school.
He spent a brief and much-talked about time serving as an Army mechanic in Hawaii rather than being shipped to serve in the Korean War as he thought was going to happen during Basic Training.
He married Marcella Willis in 1959. She died in a multiple-fatality car accident in 1972. He took on the responsibility of raising their two toddlers with assistance of family and friends in addition to farming while living with injuries he sustained in the accident.
He cared about his community and was an active part of it beginning in high school. His involvement included 4-H, FFA, Scott County Farm Bureau Board, 4-H committees, Scott County Soil and Conservation District Board, Winchester Athletic Boosters, Odd Fellows, and the American Legion. He was a member of the First Baptist Church as an adult and looked forward to financially supporting the church by working with the annual pancake and sausage fundraiser. During his last few months, he quickly grew to be part of his new community in his nursing home, taking part in activities and visiting most days.
He was a softball catcher until he was almost 40 and then became a dedicated bowler into his 70s. He gardened throughout his life and was known for bringing people more vegetables than they knew what to do with. He was a lifetime fan of St. Louis Cardinals baseball and Winchester/West Central High School basketball and football. Highlights of his years revolved around volunteering at the Scott County Fair, football, and basketball games.
Bill felt deeply and let his emotions show. He was a natural animal caretaker. He loved babies. During his regular trips into town, he filled friends with stories of his kids, grandkids, and memories. He was proud to be recognized in 2010 as the Illinois Rural Electric Illinois Country Father of the Year at a banquet and in a magazine cover story.
Bill is survived by: his daughter, Tammy (Bob) Bergland of St. Joseph, MO; his son, Roger (Diana) Fletcher of rural Winchester who live in the house where Bill was born; four adult grandchildren–Morgan (Tim) Meloy, Mason Fletcher, Zach and Alex Bergland; one great granddaughter (Cameron Meloy); his brother, Charlie (Sandy/deceased) Fletcher; nieces and nephews and their families–Chris (Chris) Fletcher, Laura Fletcher, Michael (Mary) Fletcher, Jeff (Ruth) Willis, Jeremy (Carie) Willis and Amber (Miguel) Vazquez.
