Carolyn Nell Duncan - October 29, 1935 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Nitro)
Obituary Preview: Carolyn Sutton Duncan, 88, of Poca, West Virginia died peacefully on March 24, 2024 from complications of cardiovascular disease. There will be a graveside service on April 5, 2024 in Saint Albans, West Virginia and a private gathering later in the month in Phoenix, Arizona.
Immediate surviving family members include sister Margaret Cogan Jarvis; children Karen Lawrence Holstein (Don Philyaw), Kimberly Lawrence Haslett (Dave), Jim Lawrence (Elena); and niece and namesake Carolyn Ann Hawley (Scott). Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren who called her Nana. She was predeceased by her parents named below; brother James Carrol Sutton; sisters Carolyn Sue Sutton Johnson, Nancy Sutton Bowles, and Deborah Sutton Spruce; stepbrothers Thomas Cogan, Jr., and Robert Cogan; and great-grandson Garrett Holstein.
Carolyn Nell Sutton was born in Charleston, West Virginia on October 29, 1935 to Hilda Cowie Sutton (Mother) and James Alva Sutton, Jr. (Daddy). Domestic abuse and lack of income led young Hilda to ask her trusted sister-in-law to care for her 6-month-old baby. Belva Sutton Stone (Mommy Belva) generously agreed. She and her husband, Dale B. Stone (Red), raised Carolyn and became loving, active grandparents to her 3 children.
Although raised as an only child, Carolyn was fortunate to spend many good times with her blended family which included several cousins near her age. She had many happy memories of the fun and mischief she got into with the family children and her neighborhood chums. Her favorite childhood story was about her and Carolyn Sue when they hid in the dark, smelly chicken coop to smoke cigarettes and cuss out loud. She never smoked again.
Carolyn was proud to be one of the 55 students to graduate from Ansted High School in the Class of 1953. She attended reunions that were held near the June 20th West Virginia Day for many years, often traveling from Arizona. With her passing, 14 former classmates remain.
Following high school, she attended Morris Harvey College. There, she fell for the charms of a handsome athlete who attended on a basketball scholarship. They were joined in marriage by the late Reverend Elizabeth Caudill. He enlisted, and their first child was born at Travis Air Force Base in California. Together, they had two more children before divorcing in the early 1960s.
Carolyn worked at a variety of jobs in organizations large and small, profit and non-profit. The most challenging was her promotion to "Wiring Harness Inspector" at the FMC Ordinance manufacturing plant in South Charleston, West Virginia where they built Army tanks. Her favorite job was RSVP Project Director for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in Pulaski, Virginia. There, she worked with many friendly people and developed a special relationship with the Senior Center Director, Tina Faiszt. During her 27-year marriage to Jim Duncan, she completed a correspondence course in home decorating and became interested in landscape gardening. Her favorite flowers were Daisy, Siberian Iris, and anything in shades of peach. She and Jim preserved home-grown foods, enjoyed their dogs and grandchildren, and helped care for 3 of her parents who retired and moved close to them in Dublin, Virginia. Extended family often visited during holidays, summer breaks, and other special occasions. Carolyn enjoyed being "The Hostess with the Mostest."
After she retired from work and divorced, Carolyn and Mommy Belva moved to The Highlands at Dove Mountain, an active adult community in Marana, Arizona. Mother bought the house next door. They lived 11 minutes from Carolyn's daughter, Kimberly, and 2 hours from her son, Jim. She was so happy to be close to the 10 grandchildren who lived in Arizona. She socialized more than ever and stayed connected to many of the women she met in activity groups. She was known among them as friendly, kind, pretty, and fashionable, and they liked to hear her Southern accent. Her guilty pleasure was shopping.
Due to progressing health problems and the inability to drive any longer, Carolyn (Mom) returned to West Virginia to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Gary Jarvis. They shared household meals, chores, and expenses and assisted each other in any way they could. As her health declined in the last couple of years, Mom's primary caregiver was her niece, Carolyn Ann, who lived next door. Her husband and children willingly helped in so many ways. Mom treated Margaret and Gary's three grandchildren as hers, too, and she was grateful to receive their love and attention. The group of seven was known as "Team Carolyn."
Carolyn Ann did an exceptional job of seeing that Mom received proper medical diagnoses, care, and support to bounce back after many medical emergencies. She considered it her mission and a blessing to care for Mom. She often prayed for guidance and kept her promise to Mom that she could die at home. That was made possible by family and dear medical providers Erika Bailey, Beth Copenhaver, Jessika Dirickson, and Stephanie Shepherd.

Pamela Sue Nelson - October 01, 1948 - February 19, 2024

Departed: 02/19/2024 (Nitro)
Obituary Preview: Pam Sharp Nelson of Tornado, and Hurricane, WV joined her family in peace on Monday, 19 Feb 2024 after a prolonged illness.
Born on 1 Oct 1948, to Ed and Virginia Sharp of Nitro (deceased). She was soon joined by 2 sisters, Patricia "Trish" Sharp-Doll of Salt Rock, WV (deceased) and Linda Sharp Withrow of Nitro, WV (deceased).
Pam grew up playing tackle football and is said to have been the "star quarterback" of her neighborhood team. This love of football continued her entire life, and she was crazy for the Miami Dolphins. She was also known, to family, for her abilities on the basketball court and never let the fact she was a woman get in her way of doing anything she set her mind to.
While most who knew her knew of her devotion to Elvis, what was not as known was her love for fishing and camping, both of which she naturally put others to shame. Pam was a killer at Stinger croquet and horseshoes and discovered later in life a joy in audiobooks and frequently scandalized the nursing home playing them out loud.
Pam had 2 daughters, Cindy Nelson-Morton (Dale) of Hurricane, WV and Autumn Lindley (Michael Beyrer) of Greensboro, NC to whom she devoted herself to teaching through example to be strong people and to help those you can. As such, she had her dream job helping teenagers in the Right From The Start program through the Women's Health Center in Charleston, WV for more than 15 years.
Pam's greatest joy, though, was her 7 grandchildren: Bryant Morton (29) of Hurricane, WV; Taylor Beyrer (26) of New York, NY; Hagen Lindley (24) of Greensboro, NC; Sean Morton (23) of Hurricane, WV; Coleson Lindley (22) of Greensboro, NC; Andrew Lindley (19) of Greensboro, NC; and Sophia Lindley (19) of Greensboro, NC. She loved them beyond measure would do anything for them.
Pam's family would like to thank the staff, nursing assistants and aides of Genesis Putnam and Kanawha Hospice for taking care of their mom and GeeGee. You made a huge difference in her life.
