Scripture service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, December 12, 2022, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion, Iowa, with visitation to follow from 4 to 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, with an additional visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. a livestream of the service can be viewed at https://youtu.be/lZxdrfpl33U. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Elma, Iowa.  Conway-Markham Funeral Home of Elma will be assisting Murdoch Funeral Home with local services.
Arthur was born on a farm near Cresco, Iowa, on August 19, 1929, son of John and Anna (Kubicek) Drtina. He attended a one room country school until 8th grade, where he rode a Shetland pony a mile and a half to school. Arthur graduated 12th grade at Assumption High School in Cresco, Iowa. He served his country in the United States Coast Guard for four years. After boot camp he spent 13 months at Okinawa, Japan on a United States Coast Guard Loran Navigation Station during the Korean War. The rest of his service was spent on a United States Coast Guard Loran Station at Charleston, South Carolina. On May 7, 1952, he was united to Theola Drake. He worked at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids for 34 years, retiring in 1989. Arthur’s hobbies were playing guitar, harmonica, singing, and going fishing. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Arthur is survived and lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Janel Johnson and Linda (Paul) Carpenter, two daughters-in-law, Gladys Drtina and Teresa Drtina; son-in-law, Pat Hills; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and his best friend Ruby Stephens.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Theola (Drake) Drtina; daughter, Debra Hills; sons, Arthur Jr. Drtina, and Donald Drtina; parents, John and Anna Drtina; two brothers, Frank Drtina, and George (Katherine) Drtina; and five sisters, Helen (Ed) Shimek, Lillian (Adolph) Shimek, Irene (Leo) Hyberger, Grace (Ray) Bagan, and Marie (Floyd) Copeman.

David was born in Elma, Iowa and grew up helping on the family farm, where he enjoyed gardening. He served in the Navy and lived on the submarine USS Grayback. He became a Peace Corps volunteer traveling to central and South America.
David married Marta Robelo in 1970. He worked in Aquaculture, working on Tilapia farms. He obtained his PhD and was Associate Professor working abroad. He taught at Mobile University in Nicaragua and Ava Maria College.
His children were impressed by his honesty, discipline and responsibility. He made people laugh and feel special. David is survived by daughters; Sue-Yin Margareta Hughes and Saida Hughes; granddaughters, Lucita Hughes-Fahey and adopted children, Raquel Davila, Lucia Davila and Mercedes Medina Robelo; sister in law, Lucia Robelo; niece, Melissa Robelo Moncada; nephew, Javer Moncada; grandnephew and namesake, Felix David Moncada; and grandniece Adriana. He is also survived by his sisters; Peggy Nibaur and Donna Cashman. David enjoyed a deep relationship with girlfriend Rodella Walters of Iowa
.
David was preceded in death by his wife, Marta Robelo Hughes, sister Ginny Bergen, brother Bill Hughes and parents George and Mary Clementine Hughes.
A rosary and memorial mass were held at 10 AM, July 20, 2022 in Albany, Oregon and burial was at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery on July 22, 2022.

He was was born in Elma, IA on October 30, 1939, the son of Henry and Veronica (Polansky) Smith. He attended Elma Public School. He lived in Waterloo for a time and worked at the 7-up Bottling Company and Northrup King. Later he moved to Des Moines where he was an assistant to a bricklayer. He returned to Elma where he owned and operated the Farmer’s Inn. He later worked at a variety of jobs. He especially enjoyed working at the Blue Bird and socializing. He continued to live in Elma after retirement.
His family and friends will fondly remember him as “Hankster”. His favorite line when offering to do a job was “I’ll do it for five bucks and two cans of beer”. He was well-known for singing “his own songs” and donning those “rose- colored glasses”. He enjoyed watching westerns, playing cards, taking walks and spending time with his nieces and nephews.
Hank is survived by his sisters, Margaret George of Phoneix, AZ, Jeanette Dickhoff of Des Moines, IA, Sue (Tom) Miller and Teresa (Joe) Klobassa of Elma, IA, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Monica Komarek and Marie Smith, brother-in-law, Alphonse Komarek and William Dickhoff.

Paul David Block Jr. was born on August 31st, 1968 in Cresco, Iowa to Paul Sr. and Alvina (Mecklenburg) Block. He attended and graduated from Crestwood High School in Cresco in 1986. Paul worked as an auto mechanic at Holdiman Motors in Waterloo, Iowa for several years. He then was employed at John Deere in Waterloo for 10 years. In 2019, Paul moved to Jesup, Iowa. For the last three years he has worked at Pries Enterprise in Independence, Iowa as “the best maintenance technician they ever had!”
Paul enjoyed fixing his sister’s and niece’s cars. This was probably because of the free meals he would receive for payment. He never turned down the chance to lend a helping hand to someone who needed it. He loved spending time with his family, hunting, camping, the outdoors, motorcycling and four wheeling. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Elma.
Paul is survived by his mother, Alvina Block of Cresco, Iowa; girlfriend, Casey Bickel of Quasqueton, Iowa; and his unbelievable number of siblings, Dianna Block (Tim Morris) of Onalaska, Wisconsin, Renita (Jack) Tesch of Backus, Minnesota, Suzan (Gary) Strahl of Chatfield, Minnesota, Andrew (Deb) Block of Orchard, Iowa, Daniel Block (Dalynn Melver) of Lime Springs, Iowa, Phyllis (Gene) Climer of Lebanon, Missouri, brother-in law, Craig Lines of Chetek, Wisconson, Beth (Jeff) Young of Waterloo, Iowa, Carol (Steve) Meade of Holmen, Wisconsin, Ed Block of Rowley, Iowa, Karl Block of Elma, Iowa, Marie (Bob) Rasmussen of Waterloo, Iowa, Marge (Isaac) Richmond of Sumner, Iowa, and Margaret Block of Cresco, Iowa; step grandchildren, Korbyn, Addy, Zerek and Ella; numerous nieces and nephews; an aunt and two uncles.
Paul is preceded in death by his father, Paul Block Sr; sister, Marsha Lines; nephew, Adam Block; an aunt, Vickie Block, uncles, Victor Mecklenburg and Larry Rickard, paternal grandparents, John and Hannah Block; and maternal grandparents, John and Clara Mecklenburg. Paul was the best son, brother, uncle and friend anyone could possibly ask for. He will be truly missed beyond measure!
