James Gioia - March 04, 1941 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (North Andover)
Obituary Preview: Our Wonderful Dad. Our dad was fun. One of our best childhood memories was playing hide and seek with the lights off in the house. Our dad hid on top of the refrigerator on his hands and knees. It took forever but we finally found him. Our dad was dedicated. He was one of the longest working self-employed merchants in Chelmsford. He worked as a barber for almost 60 years. Dad was fast. At the beach he would give us a mile head start and within seconds he flew right past us. Dad could dance. His legs moved so fast and he even had rhythm! Dad loved the beach so much that our parents had us on the beach by 7:30am on a Sunday morning with a box of twinkies, a bag of chips and a bottle of coke. We’d be soaked in baby oil. At the end of the day we’d drive home in dad’s convertible with the sun beating down on us while sticking to each other in the back seat. All in all it was a great beach day! Once our grandparents owned beach cottages it wasn’t long before dad became part of the beach wall. He’d have his sunglasses and gold chains on and wave to everyone. We became the ski ball family and lived at the center. Our brother had a moped. Dad would be seen riding up the coast. I think he enjoyed it more than our brother did. Dad enjoyed Foxwood and loved Las Vegas. On their anniversary every year our parents went out to Las Vegas. After our mom passed, my siblings and I took care of our dad for several years later. Dad loved a good game of 45’s. He played up until a few years ago and most of the time would beat us. Dad loved his grandchildren so much. He went to many baseball games, football games, basketball games, karate tournaments and dance recitals. When Dads great granddaughter Charlotte was born (named after our mother) he just lit up. Instantly the two became best buddies. Our dad was strong. As his health failed, he overcame many obstacles that seemed impossible. He just never gave up or complained. Our last words from our mother were” take care of dad” could she have known something then? Our mother would have been so proud of us. We treated dad like a king! My brother made a mean American chop suey. My sister Jane could whip up a whole Italian feast with her eyes closed. My sister Kath made baked ziti just like my dad’s mother. And my cooking was just edible as my dad would say. I’d tell him it hadn’t killed you yet and we’d just laugh. My brother Jimmy was shake boy always bringing dad a strawberry shake. It was so cute to see the youngest grandchildren in bed with dad all of them drinking their shakes. We had stock in Oil of Olay as it was the best lotion. Dad’s skin looked better than ours . It’s a wonder he didn’t slip away with all of it on him. We have had so many laughs. Dad always told a few jokes. Our parents taught us the importance of family and always helping out. We were blessed with a special family that just stepped up. Dad give Mom a big hug from all of us and keep watching us from above! Until we all meet again.

James "Jim" Christopher Burke - April 30, 1947 - April 14, 2024

Departed: 04/14/2024 (North Andover)
Obituary Preview: On Sunday, April 14, 2024, loving husband, father, and grandfather James (Jim) Christopher Burke, 76, of North Andover, Massachusetts, passed away due to complications with Leukemia, surrounded by family.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen, by his three daughters and their husbands, whom he loved like his own sons, and his beloved four grandchildren; Jennifer and Joseph Barba and their children Grace and James of North Andover, MA; Jami and Damien Fischer and their children Emerson and Sloane of Los Angeles, CA; and Jillian and Reza Kashani of Los Angeles, CA.
The only child of Hubert and Monica (McDowell) Burke, Jim came from humble beginnings. He learned the value of hard work and perseverance from his father, Hubert, who was raised in an orphanage and worked toward settling in North Andover. Jim grew up in a yellow house on Main Street, which he proudly still owns today. As a kid, he collected comic books and Lionel Trains. During his teenage years, he developed a love for classic cars, classic rock, and sports. Despite being a fair-skinned Irishman, he loved a perfect beach day, in his early years at Salisbury Beach and later as a regular at Cold Storage Beach in Dennis, MA. He was a passionate New England Patriots fan and loved college basketball, especially the Villanova Wildcats.
Jim was an altar boy at St. Michael’s Parish, and a graduate of North Andover High School and Lowell Technological Institute (now the University of Massachusetts, Lowell). He also earned an MBA from Northeastern University. He worked in Finance and Project Management for Textron Systems Corporation and Raytheon Technologies; he truly enjoyed his second career at Raytheon which led him to many new cities and taught him to maximize his road warrior status. He loved to travel for fun or for work and enjoyed the challenge of figuring out a new place.
As a proud townie, he served on North Andover’s town charter committee, and was dedicated to community service. On the weekends he could be found on the sidelines of many North Andover fields and courts, cheering on his kids, and later grandkids. He fondly reminisced of his days as the girls travel team soccer coach, often sharing that it was one of the most rewarding experiences that he shared with his girls and their friends.
In retirement, he enjoyed meeting up with friends for coffee, walking around the neighborhood, monitoring the stock market, and exploring the “backroads” on drives around New England, and the Pacific Coast Highway in CA. He loved spending time with his family, especially at his favorite place - on the deck in his backyard at the Cape. His favorite time of day was “happy hour”, ideally with a cold beer and a great sunset.
Jim was a devout Catholic. Family was the most important thing to him and he is forever grateful for being included as a member of Karen’s extended family which included the Armentis, Troianos, MacIlvanes, and Bourkes. He loved being a part of this big, fun, loving family.
Finally, we would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Massachusetts General Hospital’s Cancer Center who cared for Jim over the past few months, particularly the oncology nurses on Lunder 9 and 10, we are so grateful for your superior care, humor, and compassion.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Thursday April 18th at Conte Funeral Home, 17 3rd St, North Andover, MA 01845 from 4-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Michael’s Church, 196 Main St, North Andover, MA 01845 on Friday April 19th at 10am.  Burial will follow in Ridgewood Cemetery, North Andover.

Dr. Richard Alan Kemp - January 28, 1935 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (North Andover)
Obituary Preview: A devoted husband, father, and grandfather with a passion for medicine, Dr. Richard Alan “Dick” Kemp of North Andover, MA and formerly of Marion, MA and Hartford, CT, passed away on April 11, 2024, surrounded by his family and his devoted wife of 68 years, Loretta.
Dick grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan and graduated from Albion College. There, he met the love of his life, Lorie, whom he married the same weekend they graduated in June, 1956. Dick received his M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School where he developed his passion for medicine and the Michigan fight song. A lifelong learner and always willing to try something new, Dick had a storied and adventurous career in medicine for more than 50 years. He worked in leading-edge medical research as a resident at the University of Pennsylvania; was a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps at Walter Reed General Hospital; taught at the Bowman Gray medical school at Wake Forest University; and served as Director of Anesthesia at Maine Medical Center, Tobey Hospital, and Cape Cod Hospital. He was a pioneer in outpatient anesthesia. He established one of the earliest ambulatory surgical centers in the country, the Hartford Surgical Center, where he served as the Medical Director for 20 years. While in Hartford, he went on several medical expeditions to Brazil, performing more than 75 surgeries as part of a surgical team treating children in remote parts of the Amazon.
He served on the Massachusetts Health Coordinating Council, was President of the New England Society of Anesthesiologists, President for the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA), and head of the finance committee for the town of Marion, MA. Having moved to Edgewood Retirement Community in recent years, Dick participated with characteristic community spirit and enthusiasm, and was an Edgewood Community Trustee.
Dick pursued his personal interests in the same manner as his work and professional life: he was willing to take risks, and enjoyed learning new skills. He loved sailing, cross-country skiing, tennis, bowling, horseshoes, gardening and being outdoors. Dick typically became an expert in his endeavors and, in pursuing his passions, he provided his family with a life filled with rich experiences and beauty. An enthusiastic competitor, he showed up to all family events ready to play–Marco Polo, Crazy 8’s, checkers, wiffle ball, poker, and dominos. His true enjoyment in life came from watching those he loved to compete, and his presence was always known, felt, and valued. His open arms and beaming pride at the end of each event will be missed and cherished as well as his love of a game well played or a bold and energetic performance.
Dick will be remembered for his dedication to his work, his deep love of family and perhaps most of all, his deadpan and witty one liners that have become cherished stories that will long be embellished and shared.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife Lorie, his four children Eric Kemp and his wife Elizabeth, and their children Harrison, Alexander and Katherine; Jody Judge and her husband Paul, and their daughters Hannah, Kate, and Abigail; Jennifer Forelli and her husband Briggs, and their children Matthew and Meg; and Megan Harlan and her husband Geoff, and their children Merritt, Jack, and Grace; as well as two siblings John and Nancy and many nieces and nephews.

John Monks - July 06, 1930 - March 30, 2024

Departed: 03/30/2024 (North Andover)
Obituary Preview: John Monks, 93, of North Andover, MA passed away peacefully late on Saturday, March 30th, 2024.
Born on July 6, 1930, in Orange, Connecticut to Leroy and Hazel Monks, John was the youngest of three children including his brother Stiles and sister, Nancy. John had a rather idyllic upbringing. He was raised in a close family by loving parents and had many friends. In high school, he attended Hebron Academy in Maine and then went on to college, spending two years at Cornell University and graduating from Vanderbilt College in 1952 with a major in business and economics.
In 1953, he was drafted and served two years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea. Upon his return, he had a successful career in banking, initially working for People’s United Bank. While there, he attended the graduate school at Brown University. He went on to work for Chase Bank, Gateway Bank, and Sterling Capital Mortgage Company. In 1974, he married Carolyn Tucker, and they raised their three children together in Westport, Connecticut. He cared deeply for the town of Westport where he served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, coached his children’s sports teams, and was an active member of the Westport Public Library board of trustees. John was passionate about several things in life: the game of tennis, European history, and languages. In his free time, he dedicated himself to these passions and built lifelong friendships with the people he met pursuing his interests.
In 2001, he met and fell in love with Linda Francis; they married in 2004. Together, they enjoyed travel, entertaining with friends, attending movies and theatrical productions, and especially family gatherings.
Family was of the utmost importance to John, and he was a devoted father to his three children, Max, Anne, and John, Jr. Each year, he looked forward to a weeklong gathering on Block Island with his kids, grandchildren, sister, nieces, and nephews. Even as his health deteriorated, he made the trek to Scotch Beach to put his toes in the sand. John was a true extrovert who loved being with people. In his final days at Edgewood Retirement Community, this was made clear by the outpouring of love and support that came from his many friends. He was quick with a kind word, a funny joke, and was famous for his sidelong glances. He sought out the best in others and made friends everywhere he went. To him, every get-together was “a party.”
John is survived by his loving wife, Linda Francis, his son Max Monks and daughter-in-law Raena Monks of Loveland, Ohio, his daughter and son-in-law Anne and Bo Babcock of Hamilton, MA, and his son, John Monks, Jr. of Denver, CO. He will be greatly missed by his beloved granddaughters, Emerson, Adeline, Maiselle, Molly, Emma, Posey, and Collette.
His best friend and sister, Nancy Wheeler of Branford, Connecticut passed away six years ago, and we find great comfort in imagining the two of them reunited and holding court, surrounded by love, laughter, and an ocean view.
A private burial and celebration of life will take place in Connecticut later this month, and a memorial service is planned for his community of friends at Edgewood.

Jacqueline Cyr Lewis - August 30, 1934 - March 28, 2024

Departed: 03/28/2024 (North Andover)
Obituary Preview: NORTH ANDOVER, MA - Jacqueline (Jacqui) Cyr Lewis, 89, passed peacefully on March 28. She lived a long, adventurous life, and she leaves a legacy of curiosity, creativity, and bountiful love. She was born to the late Joseph S. and Cecile (Charest) Cyr, and she was proud of her French Canadian roots. In fact, she liked to remind her children that her first words were in French rather than English.
Jacqui was an imaginative force, fueled by myriad interests: she was a gifted songstress, a passionate puzzler, an animal lover, a person of deep faith, and a savvy traveler. She flourished in cultures vastly different from her own and was inspired by Middle Eastern art.
In 1969, Jacqui and her husband Jim packed up seven young children and moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for a “couple of years.” That adventure took them on a journey through the Middle East and Europe that lasted more than 30 years. During that time, she immersed herself in volunteerism. She taught ESL in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. In Iran, she co-chaired an audiotaping program for the blind at the Empress Farah Center and was President of the School Committee. In Saudi Arabia, she was a co-founder (and later President) of the Jeddah International Women's Group. She was immensely happy when she had work to do.
Back in the United States, Jacqui preferred to stay close to the coast, her favorite spot. She obtained her real estate license and was a founding member of the Seabrook Beach (NH) Civic Association. Since 2014, she has been an engaged resident of the Edgewood Retirement Community in North Andover, MA, where she met extraordinary friends and especially enjoyed playing cards and attending Sunday brunch dates. In recent years, she rescued Crosby, a tuxedo cat, who became her stalwart companion.
Jacqui earned a BA from Regis College in Weston, MA. As President of the Glee Club there, she had an opportunity to co-conduct alongside the great Arthur Fiedler. That experience was one of her most memorable. In fact, throughout her life, Jacqui sought out and participated in chorale groups, where she often was a soloist.
Jacqui is survived by seven children: Kevin Lewis and his wife Kathy Shorter (Salisbury, MA); Jane Putnam and her husband Peter (North Andover, MA); Cindy Lewis and her husband Mark Thompson (Lexington, MA); Jim Lewis (Riehen, Switzerland); Laurie Ruel and her husband Brian (Bethesda, MD); Christopher Lewis (Norfolk, VA); and Jacqueline Lewis (Ocala, FL). Also among her survivors are 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, as well as sister Anne Marie Gallant and husband Bill. Jacqui’s beloved husband, Jim, predeceased her, as did her parents and sister, Bette Jane Cyr.

James J. Barry Jr. - January 08, 1940 - March 27, 2024

Departed: 03/27/2024 (North Andover)
Obituary Preview: James Joseph Barry, Jr, 84 of North Andover, endearing husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away on March 27th. Jim was born in Lawrence on January 8, 1940, to James J. Barry Sr., and Mary (Casey) Barry. He attended St. Patrick's grammar school and Lawrence High School, Class of 1958, of which he was very proud! It was there that he was nicknamed “Bim”.
Jim lost his loving wife of 57 years, Sheila Moynihan Barry in 2020 after a long illness. The love and care he showed her during those years was unmatched. They met in high school and were married on April 4, 1963. They initially made their home in the Tower Hill section of Lawrence, and in 1976 moved to North Andover where they raised four children.
Jim worked for Mass Electric and later for Bay State Gas Co. for over 25 years. He also worked part time for the IRS during tax season for many years and sold real estate.
When their second child, Teddy, was diagnosed with autism at 2 ½ years old, there was little known about it. Jim and Sheila approached his diagnosis with grace and fought hard for services and the proper care for Teddy and many other children. There were many obstacles to overcome through the years, but they never gave up, all the while working and providing a wonderful childhood for their children.
Jim’s favorite place was on the beach. He was the tannest Irishman that ever lived, often spending entire summer days on Salisbury Beach until the sun went down. Then it was time for a “cuba libre”, but only with real Coke, never Pepsi, and the lime had to be perfect. In 1986 Jim and Sheila bought a small property in Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard and enjoyed many years with family and friends exploring the island and soaking up the sun on State Beach. This was one of their favorite places to enjoy together and they were very proud of that accomplishment.
Jim was also an avid sports fan. Baseball, basketball, football, you name it.
He coached many baseball teams over the years for the North Andover Pony League, and also for the North Andover Cardinals of the Northeast League with one of his best buddies, Paul Theberge. He especially loved watching his children and grandchildren’s sporting events.
If you knew Bim, you definitely listened to a story or two over the years. Let's just say short stories were not his strong suit. No detail was left out -- you were in it for the long haul. In his retirement, his favorite thing to do was painting with his longtime Lawrence buddies, Bob “Mase” Mason, Mike Hughes, Billy Batemanand Rick Danahy. They would most certainly tell you being stuck on a ladder next to Bim, you weren't getting out of there anytime soon.
Jim is survived by his four children, daughter Mary Kathryn Brennan of North Andover, son Edward “Teddy” Barry of Dracut, son James Barry III (Jay) and his wife Joanne of Medford, daughter Beth Barry Gately and her husband Jack of Plymouth; six grandchildren, Jon Brennan (Taylor), Amy Brennan Rock (Matt), Aidan and Catherine Barry, William and Caroline Gately; great grandson Connor Rock; great granddaughters Emerson Rock and Miles Brennan, sister Maureen Barry, his “fifth kid” and nephew Jack Brock, son-in-law John Brennan; as well as several close nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim was predeceased by his older brother John Barry, sister, Sr. Ann Marie Barry, sister Elaine Gillick, and his grandson Patrick K. Barry.
The family would like to thank the staff from Prescott House for their commitment and compassion in caring for Bim, as they affectionately called him.
Family and friends may call on Thursday, April 4th from 4-7 p.m. at Conte Funeral Home, 17 3rd Street, North Andover. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, April 5th at 11:30 a.m. at St. Michael Church in North Andover. Burial will follow at Ridgewood Cemetery North Andover.

John William Mulcahy Sr. - September 29, 1930 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (North Andover)
Obituary Preview: John William Mulcahy Sr. passed away peacefully on March 21, 2024, at Lawrence General Hospital. He spent his life trying to “figure things out…. how to fix them.” He was born on September 29, 1930, in Randolph, Massachusetts to Clarence and Alma Mulcahy and spent his childhood in Essex, Mass, growing up in a ship building family. He was fascinated from a young age with ship construction, spending many hours with his dad and uncles learning their trade. He lost his dad while still in his teens and stepped up to the responsibilities of helping his mother try to figure out how to hold a house of four children together while coping with his deep sense of the loss of his beloved father.
He met his wife, Jean, when he was a freshman at Gloucester High School and the two married in 1952 before he began his service in the United States Air Force. He served in London as well as in the States during his enlistment. They welcomed a son, John, and a daughter, Karen, to the family in 1953 and 1956. It made sense that he spent his professional life as an electrical engineer with the Bell Telephone Laboratories in North Andover, Massachusetts, rising from his role as a technician to that of a Senior Manager. When returning home from work it was often clear that his mind was still at work on a problem that he had not quite solved or “figured out” during the day in the office. That commitment to finding a solution extended to his civic work in Boxford with the Volunteer Fire Department, a group in its infancy when he joined, and one that under his watch as Chief of the Department saw the construction of two new stations and the hiring of a full-time chief. Upon his retirement from Bell Telephone Laboratories, he continued working as an independent advisor to both domestic and European companies.
He and his wife lived happily in Boxford for over 50 years although they added the label of “snowbirds,” spending winters in Naples, Florida. He served for many years on the board of his Florida condominium and was eagerly sought out for his advice on any number of concerns in that community.
His dedication to “figuring and fixing” was especially evident in his dedication to helping to manage the care of his wife as she faced various health obstacles over the last several years.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Jean, his son John, his son-in-law, Andrew, his sister-in-law Barbara, his brother and sister-in-law Dick and Diane, niece Susan and husband Fred, niece Sandy and husband Mark, niece Pam and husband Leonard, niece Nancy, nephew Shawn and wife Heather, nephews Brian, Andrew and Richard, and, of course, the many friends that he so cherished.

Maureen Petronio - June 23, 1943 - March 14, 2024

Departed: 03/14/2024 (North Andover)
Obituary Preview: Maureen Petronio (née Allenberg) concluded her life’s final chapter on March 14, 2024. Born in Cambridge, MA, on June 23, 1943, she penned an 80-year-long story that was anything but by the book.
Tony Petronio, her beloved spouse of 57 years, children Anthony, Andrew, Tamara, Tim, and Rebekah, together with her adoring grandchildren, Anthony, Kate, Jake, Ella, and Max, survive Maureen. They were her universe, her pride, her joy, and occasionally, her editorial subjects.
Maureen’s passion was education; her academic journey took her from the historic halls of Cambridge Rindge and Latin to her undergraduate degree from Emmanuel College, her master's from Tufts University, and her Ph.D. from Harvard University. As a special education teacher in Cambridge, Maureen taught lessons that transcended books; as a consultant for the World Bank, she invested in underprivileged girls’ futures; and as a lecturer at Harvard, she unlocked the potential in every mind, all with an eye towards improving gender inequity.
Her fashion was as sharp as her mind, and her ability to edit anything from toasts to essays was nothing short of legendary. She engaged in politics with the tenacity of a seasoned diplomat and treasured her Book Club friends like rare editions in her personal library of life. A champion for women's rights and a champion at the 45s card table, she played the game of life with an enviable hand.
Maureen's exit was as graceful as her life, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter and a trail of edited toasts and essays. Let's celebrate the great narrative of Maureen Petronio, a life so well composed it would make Shakespeare want to jot down some notes.
A celebration of Maureen's life will be held at Conte Funeral Home in North Andover, MA. The visiting hours will be held on March 23, 2024, from 10-12PM with a service immediately following from 12-1PM. Prepare to share your most fashionable stories and raise a glass (preferably with a dry martini, extra olives) in her honor.
