José "Joe" Antonio Loureiro - August 06, 1967 - April 09, 2024

Departed: 04/09/2024 (Andover)
Obituary Preview: José "Joe" Antonio Pereira de Loureiro was born on August 6, 1967 in Parada de Gonta, Portugal. He was the first born of Antonio Loureiro and Casimira Almeida.
He spent a happy childhood playing with his siblings and many cousins in the backwoods and tiny streets of their scenic mountainous village. He often joked that his only toys were the sticks and rocks he found on the ground. Sundays were devoted to God and family; church followed by a big meal, courtesy of Tony and his fattened rabbit, garden and grapevines. Stories and laughter were fueled by love with a little help from the homemade aguardente (firewater).
The family moved to the US in 1979 and settled near extended family in Elizabeth, New Jersey; with Jersey just being an extension of the happy times made in Portugal.
In 1981, the family relocated to Milford, MA, where Joe attended high school before enrolling in the Army Reserves. In the army Joe got to "see the world", but fortunately, no combat. Taking advantage of his GI benefits, he enrolled in Northeastern University, graduating with a degree in electrical engineering.
Joe met the love of his life, Ellen at Biogen in the mid-90s. He worked in metrology, she in QC where her laboratory equipment "conveniently" needed calibrating. His charming pick-up line, "want to go running sometime?" worked. Their first date, a two-hour run around the Charles on a 90-degree day, miraculously led to their second. The rest is history.
Future wife hooked; it was time to move on in his career. He did a short stint at a smaller company before moving on to an engineering geek's ultimate playground, Raytheon Technologies, where he worked for 24 years in various positions in Operations and Quality. Joe was the ideal employee: hardworking, reliable, dedicated, and efficient. According to his most recent performance review and Program Director feedback, "His knowledge of processes and policies helps us comply during audits. He has a positive can-do attitude; he is always well prepared and shares detailed data to ensure data driven decisions. Joe was an instrumental part of the Product Support Team. His impact will certainly be missed. We are deeply saddened by this tremendous loss". Upon news of his passing, the company's stock price tumbled 500 points.
After marrying in 2000, Ellen convinced Joe that it was a good idea to buy the "oldest house in Andover". It had always been her dream to settle near trees, having grown up in the city next door. "It's full of character!". The house on Chester Street has been in a perpetual state of repair ever since, but Joe and Ellen soon learned that walls don't make a home and aren't necessary when you're blessed with the most wonderful neighbors anyone could ever wish to live next door to (bonus. some neighbors even run).
Andover has been the perfect place to raise their two sons, Tomas and Joseph, the pride and joy of their Dad. Having three brothers of his own, Joe knew what boys needed and encouraged their physical activity. Growing up in Europe, he easily transferred the needed skills to master futebol. That didn't come as naturally when the boys decided American football was their sport of choice. Mom had to teach them those skills, but Dad was still determined to be involved, so went to the library to do "research". His teacher, "Football for Dummies". The family has created countless memories together: watching sporting events, attending never-ending "any excuse for a party" family gatherings, and vacationing happily with family and friends around New England, Virginia, and California. Joe at his proudest moment, able to share his childhood home on a trip to Portugal.
Though always active, Joe's early onset mid-life crisis was how his nickname "crazy running Joe" got coined. After completing several warm-up runs (including Boston, 9 times!) Joe became bored and dabbled in other challenges: snowshoeing, biking. He even tried his hat at triathlons until he remembered the hard way that he never learned to swim. Only placing first "in his age group", went against his competitive nature; so, began his career in ultramarathoning, completing both 100-mile and 180-mile races.
Joe was both a gentleman and a gentle man; calm, kind and steady.
Joe finished his final race on April 9th, delivered into the loving arms of God. He passed peacefully in his sleep with his beloved wife by his side.
In addition to his wife, children and parents, Joe is survived by his brothers Paulo Loureiro and his wife Jenny Cameron of Littleton, and David Loureiro and his wife Linda of Milford; several nieces and nephews and more extended family-too numerous to count. He is pre-deceased by his brother Carlos and sister Cristina.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 19, 2024, at St. Patrick's Church, 118 South Broadway in Lawrence, followed by burial at Spring Grove Cemetery, 124 Abbott Street in Andover.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, April 18, 2024, from 4 to 8pm at Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence Street, Andover.
In Lieu of flower donations, please consider making a donation in Joe's name to the American Heart Association.
Those attending or unable to attend church services and burial are invited to join the family for a luncheon following the burial at approximately 1:00 PM at Autograph American Tavern, 89 Main Street Court, Andover.

John L. Howard Jr. - October 07, 1926 - April 03, 2024

Departed: 04/03/2024 (Andover)
Obituary Preview: John L. Howard Jr. beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away Wed., April 3, 2024 at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, surrounded by his loving family. John was born in Long Island City, New York on October 7, 1926 to John L. Howard Sr and Bertha (Corella) Howard. His mother died in 1928 and John was blessed with his loving stepmom, Florence (Flynn) Howard.
The family moved to Wallkill, New York when John was five and he spent his youth in the country where he loved the outdoors hiking, hunting and exploring. He vacationed at Lake Cazenovia NY often with his stepmom’s family and cousin, later Syracuse Bishop Francis Harrison. He worked summers on the New York Thruway and attended 1944 summer military camp at Camp Smith. A wrestler, Golden Gloves boxer, and member of the New York State Guard, he had earned more than enough high school credits when he volunteered for the US Army during WWII, receiving his high school diploma later.
Following 4 months of basic training, John served in the Philippines Sept. 1945 - Dec.1946 with the 615 Ordnance Ammunition Co. a disposal unit where he suffered injuries in an explosion. His story is in the Andover book Heroes Among US – Book IV WWII. With a Staff Sergeant honorable discharge Dec. 10. 1946, he then attended the University of Iowa, earning more than the required PhD credits in physical education. He started a marketing career with Dupont in Newburgh, NY and was a ten-year member of the National Guard.
When his best friend John Barbatsuly suffered a hunting accident and was admitted to Vassar Hospital, John met the love of his life, student nurse Ethel Hatt. They married August 10, 1957 and have cherished 67 years of marriage. Blessed with four children – Mariann, John, Linda and Nancy, the family moved from New York to Delaware, to Tennessee, back to Delaware and finally Andover, Mass. He especially enjoyed coaching youth football, being president of Shawsheen PTO, an active member of Andover Triad and Andover Vets. A devoted family man, with a move to Texas in the offing, John declined and joined sales at Irving Tanning. Later, becoming independent, he began marketing for US leather tanneries, like Thiele Tanning, supplying footwear manufacturers. Associates described John as “a walking encyclopedia” of the leather industry. Outgoing and personable, with a great memory for names and faces, he enjoyed the warm welcome of his many business contacts. He spent decades in year-round business travel in the US and Canada, carrying spare car parts in case of and emergency. An expert skier, he embraced winter.
Part of his heart remained with his alma mater, the University of Iowa. Often, clad in his Hawkeye t-shirt, he would meet fellow Hawkeyes, spending time sharing their love for the University of Iowa. To the very end he was ready to recruit for his Hawkeyes, regaling the nurses and doctors with anecdotes John shared his motto, ‘right is right and wrong is no man’s right.’ Strong and resilient, he worked in marketing until age 96. John treasured his family and his country, viewing every day as a promise for good in life and in the world.
Survivors include his wife, children, and grandchildren - Katarina (Fiorentino) and husband Jake Klatzkow, Corbin, Kelwyn, and Aisling Howard, his sister Bernadette Noe and her children Terry, Patricia (Donald) VanLeuven, and Stewart Noe Jr.

Laila V. (Hill) Salo - September 15, 1945 - February 17, 2024

Departed: 02/17/2024 (Andover)
Obituary Preview: Andover, MA – On Saturday afternoon, February 17, 2024, Laila (Hill) Salo went to her heavenly home after a five-year battle with Alzheimer’s. Surrounded by her daughters, Lisa Sullivan and Lori Gress, her son-in-law Norman Gress, and her sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Hal Lichtle, she passed away peacefully in the excellent care of Prescott House, North Andover, Massachusetts.
Laila was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts in 1945, graduating from Fitchburg High School in 1963. In 1968, Laila married and moved to Lunenburg where she raised her daughters. In 1993, Laila moved to Leominster, MA, where she proudly purchased her condo and savored the sights and sounds of nature over many cups of coffee and dark chocolates on her private deck. She would go on to enjoy her empty-nest and retirement years until it was time to take up residence in the Avita memory care wing at Stone Hill in Andover, MA, just a mile from her daughter Lori, where she thrived for the last two years.
Laila enjoyed raising her daughters. They were her pride and joy. When her girls were young, Laila stayed home but eventually made her way into accounting beginning with Leominster Hospital and retiring from Montachusett Opportunity Council (MOC) in 2010.
Laila would support the girls’ efforts as they got involved in Brownies and Girl Scouts (the BOXES of Girl Scout cookies she delivered!), after-school sports, dance classes and recitals, and anything the girls were a part of. She put up with sleepovers, would be the mom screaming outside when it got dark out, “Girls, time to come in!” and could often be found enjoying a hot cup of coffee or tea with her neighbor/dear friend, Nancy Meserve, in the afternoons. She was a wonderful mom, sister, aunt, and friend.
Throughout most of her life, she was involved in her church – Messiah Lutheran Church of Fitchburg, MA, and the Ladies of Kaleva, the Finnish community that was headquartered in Fitchburg and on the shores of Fort Pond in Lancaster, MA. In the cooler months, the Ladies of Kaleva would host events at the Kaleva Home in Fitchburg, including the well-attended family Christmas parties where her daughters and other children begrudgingly performed holiday songs knowing they would be rewarded by a visit from Santa Claus. In the warmer summer months, Laila would often be found at her family’s camp at Fort Pond with the girls (and their many friends) soaking up the sun during the day or on the dance floor at night at the weekly Finnish “Hops” (dances) in the Big Camp on the property.
Laila had many dear friends, some of whom have already preceded her in death, including her very best friend of 77 years, Sandra (Lappi) Ouellette who passed just last summer, in July 2023. She is preceded in death by her parents, Yalmar Hill and Vieno (Saari) Hill. Laila leaves her aforementioned daughters and sister and brother-in-law as well as her grandsons, Jackson and Oscar Gress, nieces Tracy (Lichtle) Frederick and Halee (Lichtle) Bange (Joe), her grandnieces and nephew, Madisyn, Rachel, and Adam, along with several cousins in the States and abroad in Finland and Sweden.
A private burial service was held on Thursday, February 22nd at Forest Hill Cemetery in Fitchburg. A celebration of life will be planned later in the spring/early summer.

Ann Olga DiBona - July 12, 1935 - February 14, 2024

Departed: 02/14/2024 (Andover)
Obituary Preview: Ann Olga DiBona, 88, of Andover passed away peacefully on February 14, 2024, with her family at her side.
Olga was born in Millinocket, Maine, the seventh child of the late Berardino Brigalli and the late Annina Rainaldi. She graduated first in her class from St. Martin de Tours High School. Upon graduation, Olga moved to Boston to live with her oldest sister, Angie, and attend nursing school.
Olga’s life in Millinocket was magical. She had loving parents and older sisters who doted on her. There were many cousins in Little Italy, where she grew up. There was a celebratory feast with all her relatives every holiday. While walking home from high school one afternoon, she spotted a toddler floundering in the river. Olga and her cousin, Joyce McKinnon, rescued the boy. As was typical of Olga, she stepped back and allowed her cousin to receive most of the credit and accolades.
Sadly, her mother had a stroke when Olga was 12 years old. She helped her family care for her until her mother’s death, when Olga was 14 years old. After that, Olga’s three sisters adjusted their lives so they could help raise her.
In 1958, she married the late James R. DiBona, the love of her life. Throughout their 57 year marriage they lived all over the United States and in Spain, moving as required by Jim’s developing career. Anita was born February 5th, 1940 in East Boston, MA, daughter of Emma and Leo Giardullo. Although an only child, she was surrounded by a multitude of cousins and neighbors in the close-knit Italian neighborhood of Byron Street. All who knew her at a young age remember Anita as a vivacious, charismatic, and talented girl.
She had much success as a young lady, winning “Miss Marsha Jordan”, a fashion and etiquette contest in Boston, at the age of 16. Anita was also very involved in the Catholic Youth Organization, elected the National Vice President at age 19 and later named the Outstanding Catholic Youth of 1960.
Anita was an accomplished pianist early in life and made Liturgical Music her career. She graduated from Emmanuel college with a BA in Music, and received her Masters in Music Education from UMass Lowell. She was liturgical music director at Holy Redeemer Parish in East Boston, Saint John the Baptist Church in Peabody, and Saint Augustine Church in Andover. Anita spent the bulk of her career in Andover as both Organist and Director of the Adult and Youth Choirs. Her former choir members and co-celebrants from each Parish are among her dearest friends. A highlight in her career was a trip to the Vatican with the Saint Augustine Choir in 2001 to sing for Pope John Paul II.
Anita was Musical Director for many community theater productions, often times directing her first husband, Dan McDuffie, in starring roles in musicals for the Winthrop Playmakers, the North Shore Players in Danvers, and Andover Summer Theater. Anita enjoyed her summers at Seabrook beach, sitting in the sun, playing crosswords or Sudoku for hours. Above all, Anita was a devoted, cherished Mother and loving Grandmother. She showered love on her Grandchildren with Easter Egg hunts, birthday celebrations and holiday gatherings, tennis games, piano lessons, recitals, and numerous beach days. Joseph B. Bardetti - December 06, 1966 - January 24, 2024

Departed: 01/24/2024 (Andover)
Obituary Preview: Joseph B. Bardetti of Andover died peacefully on January 24th. He spent his last few days surrounded by family and friends, a gift they will always cherish. Joe, affectionately “Joby” to those who knew him from childhood, was born the life of the party on December 6th, 1966, and later dubbed the one “most likely to have a lampshade on his head.” He attended Phillips Academy - Andover and Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
After college, Joby moved to Chicago to work as a Creative Director at the Leo Burnett advertising agency. While working in the marketing world, Joe also tried his hand at stand-up comedy, allowing him to showcase his smart wit and wise-ass humor on an audience beyond his family and friends. As you can imagine, Joe’s parents were thrilled when their son decided to leave his job and become a full-time stand-up comedian after all of the tuition they had paid. He went on to become a headliner at some of Chicago’s top comedy clubs, including Zanie’s, and did guest spots in the Boston area when he came home to visit.
Though Joe was extremely successful in the comedy circuit, his hours were not very conducive to being a dad. After many years on stage, he went on to become a Co-Founder and Managing Creative Director of The Well advertising agency in Chicago. Joe and his family moved back to Andover in 2004 for a year to help sell the family’s car dealership so his father could retire. This has become the longest year of their lives, as they are all still in Andover. Well, technically Joe now only lives there in spirit, as he would be very quick to point out. Of all he has achieved, Joe’s greatest accomplishments are his three children, Sophia, Julia, and Luke. He beamed with unmistakable pride whenever he spoke about them. From sharing stories of travel and adventure about Sophie, to watching Jules shine on the stage at her dance recitals, to seeing Luke pitch on the baseball field, they were by far his biggest joys. Joe
loved watching baseball, especially the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox, vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard, and mapping out a way to drag everyone to see every tourist site on a trip. He was always learning and sharing his knowledge about anything and everything.
Joe, always the consummate entertainer, tried to keep everyone laughing until the bitter end, in his last few days saying to his family, “I didn’t have it in my schedule to die this week,” amongst many other inappropriate comments that should not be put in writing. He was always the biggest personality in any room, doing his best to get a laugh (or possibly an eye roll from those who knew him best). Anyone who knew Joe would describe him as brilliant, creative, generous, warm, sentimental, and wildly entertaining. May he finally be in peace with his dad.
Joe was a loyal friend to many, from every chapter of his life. In addition to these cherished friends, Joe is survived by Elizabeth “Liz” Bardetti and their three children, Sophia, Julia, and (Joseph) Luke. He is also survived by his mother, Marilyn Bardetti and was predeceased by his father, Joseph F. Bardetti. Joe is also survived by his sisters, Deana Bardetti and Jennifer Bardetti Hardock and her husband Mike Hardock, as well as his brother-in-law and good friend, John Taxiarhos. Joe also leaves behind many extended family members, including his loving nieces and nephews Taylor, Zak, Ashley, and Brooke Hardock and Simon Taxiarhos, all of Andover as well as Colin, Ryan, Owen and Jack Baker, of Toms River, New Jersey. Lastly, he leaves his two sweet pups, Tessi and Mookie, who are the only two in the family who have more hair than Joby did.
Calling hours will be held Saturday, January 27 at The Cochran Chapel at Phillips Academy in Andover (2 Chapel Ave) from 11am-1pm, with a funeral service immediately following at the Chapel. Burial will be at West Parish Cemetery in Andover following the service.

Alan S. Russell - August 16, 1950 - January 21, 2024

Departed: 01/21/2024 (Andover)
Obituary Preview: Alan S. Russell, of North Andover MA, passed away suddenly on Sunday, January 21st, 2024, while in Naples Florida. He leaves us deeply saddened but comforted knowing how happy he was in his final years and especially during his last hours spent with his wife Christine, and talking to his children.
Alan was born in Selma, Alabama on August 16th, 1950, to James and Marjorie Russell. Alan was the 2nd of four children, including older brother James, younger sister Elinor, and youngest brother Eric. In the early 50s, the family moved back north to Montclair, New Jersey and kept a country home in Salisbury, Connecticut.
As a boy he went to Brookside School for grammar school in Montclair NJ, then for high school attended the Hill School in Pottstown, PA. He was a natural athlete and ran track once running a sub-5-minute mile. He often reminded his family that he was recruited to train for the Olympic trials. He went to Duke for one year (1969-70) where he played Rugby with his brother Jim - Alan as a fast running back and Jim was a slow moving, but ever so tough, forward.
After 1 year at Duke, he decided to take time off of school and spent the summer in Salisbury where he met his first wife Ellen. Before moving to Boston, the two spent a quiet year in rural Maine. Brilliantly smart and hardworking, Alan ultimately finished his undergraduate studies in Applied Mathematics at Babson College in Boston, and later received his MBA and CPA certification from Columbia University in New York.
He and his first wife Ellen welcomed their son Stephen in 1975 who tragically passed away shortly after that same year. Stephen remained with Alan in his heart for the rest of his life. His only daughter Eliza was born in February 1977. He married his second wife Pamela in 1984, becoming stepfather to her son, Christopher, also born in 1977. Pam and Alan had two sons, Tim and Kevin, born in 1989 and 1992 respectively, completing their extended family and creating a tight unit of the 4 siblings.
He often described his third wife Christine as the love of his life. They married in 2014 and while they didn’t have any children together, he loved her grown sons as his own, and they both adored their multiple grandchildren. His absolute joy in life was visiting his daughters' children; Harper (age 12), and Tate and Anna (age 6).
Alan was a businessman. He worked in finance and accounting for his career, starting with Alexander Grant & Company, an accounting firm in Boston in 1975, where he met his lifelong friend Norm Viens. While never being quite content with any one job, he found his calling later in life as a financial consultant at numerous higher education institutions across the country. His last position was as CFO at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC where he had also worked 10 years earlier.
He was a voracious reader, and especially loved American history with a focus on the Revolutionary, Civil, and Second World Wars. Among his favorite projects was studying about the US Marine’s invasion of Japanese-held Iwo Jima starting February 19th, 1945. Alan’s father James A. Russell was in the 4th Marine Division on Iwo Jima, and Alan was constantly looking for information on that operation; he corresponded and met with Marine Iwo Jima veterans, to learn more about the hardships his father faced. He is survived by his wife Christine, brothers Eric and James and their families, daughter Eliza Morris, her husband Andy, their children Harper, Anna and Tate of Kennett Square, PA, son Tim Russell and his wife Mary Elizabeth of Washington DC,
son Kevin Russell and his partner Mariel of Alexandria VA, stepson Chris Dexter of Alexandria VA, stepson Rick Johanson and his wife Brianne of S. Hamilton, MA their children Crew (8) and Saylor (4), Steve Johanson and wife Michele Galgana of Redwood CA, and Robert and Courtney Johanson of Arlington, MA. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, sister Elinor, son Stephen, and many friends and relatives. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday January 30th at 11:00 am at Free Christian Church in Andover MA
