John A. Peterson - June 29, 1945 - May 11, 2022

Departed: 05/11/2022 (Portland)
Obituary Preview: John A. Peterson 1945-2022
DURHAM, MAINE—John A. Peterson, 76, of Durham, Maine and formerly of Boylston, MA, died Wednesday May 11 in Portland, Maine.
He was born June 29, 1945 in Worcester the son of John and Gladys (Paul) Peterson. He attended Norwich University then graduated from Springfield College. John married Paula Scher in 1968. He worked for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette first as a reporter and later as a copy editor. He retired from Hanover Insurance Company.
John (Peter, Pete, Dad, or Bapa to his family and friends) had an insatiable intellectual curiosity – he was a thinker. He was genuine and openminded wanting mostly to understand why things are the way they are. From his dedication to his family and its genealogy, to his fascination of the cyclical nature of life. He explored and learned all he could, leading to hobbies like mastering rockabilly and honkytonk on the piano, riding a chopper motorcycle, flying a variety of aircraft, and pitching in senior league baseball. More recently, participating in think-tank style gatherings with neighbors and metal detecting the local woods and on old farm properties captured his interest. Peter also fancied himself an amateur moonshiner and prided himself on being the family’s chief chipmunk trapper. His playful and mischievous sense of humor often involved talking to Murphy (of Murphy’s Law) and finding the irony in situations where he found himself and others.
After Peter and Paula followed their daughter and family to Maine, his greatest joy became watching his grandsons’ grow up. He was their best wrestling opponent, bucking horsey, and scary monster. He was undoubtedly their biggest cheerleader on the sidelines.
Even with all his interests, it was his family that kept his attention. Peter was a dedicated husband, dad, and grandfather - brimming with love and pride.
John was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Paula Peterson; his daughter, Kristin Guibord and her husband Michael of North Yarmouth, ME and his grandsons, Orion and Jonah Guibord. His sister-in-law Barbara Scher of West Boylston MA, brother-in-law Gerry Scher of Worcester Ma,
A graveside service will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Boylston, MA on June 25, 2022 at 11:00am.

Danuta Barnard - May 28, 1925 - April 17, 2022

Departed: 04/17/2022 (Portland)
Obituary Preview: SCARBOROUGH, Maine - Danuta (Dana) Mey Barnard, age 96, a resident of the Piper Shores retirement community here, died on Sunday, April 17, 2022, at the Holbrook Health Center at Piper Shores.
She was born in Lwow, Poland (now Lviv, Ukraine), on May 28, 1925, the only child of Tadeusz and Stefania Grochowska Mej, as the name was then spelled. She lost both parents while she was a girl. Her mother died in 1937. Her father, a businessman, disappeared in Russian custody in 1940 after the Soviet Union occupied eastern Poland under terms of a deal with Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany, which had invaded Poland from the west.
She lived with relatives for a time returning to Lwow after the Germans attacked their one-time partners in 1941 and drove the Soviets out of Poland. Danuta pursued her education at Catholic, public, and private schools; her diploma was unofficial because Nazi occupiers made no formal provision for educating Poles.
She then worked in Radom, Poland, until a massive Red Army summer offensive routed Soviet troops to the outskirts of the city on July 29, 1944. She joined a local Bosch team on the only open road out of Radom. After they had made their way through Czechoslovakia and Austria, Danuta lost contact with her group during an Allied air raid on the railroad station in Ulm, Germany.
Danuta was an office worker with the Bosch company in Goppingen, Germany, when American troops captured the city on April 20, 1945 – Hitler’s last birthday, as it happened, for he killed himself before the German surrender on May 8. A U.S. Army medical clearing company that was processing displaced persons of more than 20 nationalities hired Danuta as an interpreter. She also worked for U.S. Army Refugee Relief Team 6 in Piding, Bavaria, helping screen refugees entering the U.S. zone from Russian-occupied Austria. Once the border was closed, she worked in the personnel office of the U.S. Army recreation area in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, former site of Hitler’s alpine retreat.
Sponsored by Catholic Relief Services, she came to the United States in March 1953, became a proud U.S. Citizen and worked for several years in New York City. On a 1959 visit to Maine, she met Bowdoin College’s alumni secretary, Ohio native and Navy veteran, Peter C. Barnard, Bowdoin ’50. They were married Dec. 17, 1960, in a civil ceremony in Brunswick, followed by a religious ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral (Episcopal) in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
Over the years, as Peter worked at Bowdoin, Pine Manor Junior College, and the Maine Medical Center, the Barnards lived in Brunswick, Cumberland, Boston, Freeport and Yarmouth before settling at Piper Shores, where Peter died in January 2005.
Danuta worked 10 years as administrative secretary for the Bowdoin College psychology department and was a painstaking needlepoint artist. At Piper Shores, she served on the residents’ marketing committee and volunteered in the community’s nursing wing.
She is survived by her late husband’s two nephews and niece, in California, by two cousins of her late husband and a host of friends.
She wanted to express the highest regard she had for the Piper Shores Retirement Community and how grateful she was to the Founders who conceived the idea and the management and staff who made it a success.
Funeral arrangements are being made by Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Homes in Portland. Burial at Riverside Cemetery in Yarmouth will be private. A celebration of Danuta’s life will be held at a later date. To view Danuta’s memorial page or to share an online condolence, please visit www.ConroyTullyWalker.com

Susan C. Levin - August 02, 1940 - March 27, 2022

Departed: 03/27/2022 (Portland)
Obituary Preview: Susan Castleman Levin Obituary
Levin – Susan Castleman, 81, lived a life. A full, active, joyous life. In her prime, she would leap out of bed at dawn and dash off to any number of pursuits: tennis, golf, kayaking, painting, photography, creative writing, bridge, volunteering, sometimes all of these in one day. A typical outing also included delicious cuisine. She relished a finely presented restaurant meal, and brusquely dismissed anything that fell short of her standards, leaving a trail of delighted or dispirited chefs and waiters in her wake. To end the day, Susie would recline with a glass of red wine, next to her husband of 48 years, Richard (Dick) Levin (deceased in 2017), taking in a colorful sunset over Three Mile Harbor in East Hampton, New York, or the Intracoastal Waterway in Jupiter, Florida.
In her working years, she taught the deaf and hard of hearing in the New York City public schools in the 70’s and 80’s, and dabbled in a few other professions, including brief stints as an ice cream parlor owner, software programmer (Logo Power!), and a real estate partner with Dick. In her free time, she became a powerful advocate for students with learning disabilities.
Susie and Dick persevered through infertility challenges in the early years of marriage, suffering four miscarriages before adopting Stephen and then eventually giving birth to Robert. As with every part of her life, Susie brought her indomitable spirit to mothering. She showed up for every last sporting event, and was constantly cooking up creative ways to have family fun or navigate the challenges of raising two boys.
Susie and Dick were accomplished travelers, starting with a world tour honeymoon in 1969. And they didn’t just stick to the trendy spots, visiting Nepal on that first trip, Soviet-bloc Eastern Europe in the 1980s, Egypt and Jordan in the 1990’s, and Cuba in 2001.
Susie fiercely battled Parkinson’s Disease in her last 10 years, following her father Eli’s motto that living well is the best revenge in the face of adversity. As someone who deemed any temperature below 67 degrees “freezing,” she reluctantly moved to Portland, Maine, in 2019 to be closer to family. In her own style, she quickly adjusted, settling in at The Cedars senior community. She continued to squeeze the most out of every moment, even when that meant outdoor wintertime gatherings due to covid restrictions.
Her drive and determination inspired her family and her peers. If she has any pull where she is now, she’ll be working hard to make things better for all of us. She died on Sunday, March 27 with the words “peace” and “Oseh Shalom” on her lips.
Susie was born a Detroit girl to Eli and Marion Castleman, growing up with sister Carol and brother Lee. Susie is survived by her sons Stephen Levin (and wife Colleen Levin) and Rob Levin (and wife Sarah Cushman), and four grandchildren, Evan, Cedar, Kai, and Corbin, as well as her niece, Stacey Alexander, and nephews Bradley Falk, Michael Jacobson, and Andrew Jacobson.
An informal memorial service is planned for late May, both in person and on zoom. For details see her memorial page at www.ConroyTullyWalker.com.
Any donations in her memory can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, www.parkinson.org/. Memorial Service for Susan C. Levin – Thursday, May 26 at 3:30 PM Hybrid - Both on Zoom and In Person Zoom link: email Rob Levin (see below) In person: Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine 1342 Congress St., Portland, Maine

Patricia H. Welch - May 15, 1933 - March 12, 2022

Departed: 03/12/2022 (Portland)
Obituary Preview: Portland-Patricia H. Welch, 88, died peacefully on March 12, 2022, surrounded by family. She was born Patricia Hope Ellis to Grace Powell Ellis and Dale Martin Ellis on May 15, 1933. When Pat was young, her mother remarried to her beloved step-father Mickey O’Donnell. Patricia spent her youngest years in Bolster’s Mills and Cape Elizabeth, then as a teen in South Portland, graduating from South Portland High School. Patricia was a nurse’s aide at Mercy Hospital until she married the love of her life Edward Welch in 1953. Edward and Patricia lived 38 years together in the house in which Edward was raised, in the Libbytown neighborhood of Portland, until he passed in 1992. Pat’s mother, Gracie, also lived with the family for many cherished years. The Mass. Ave neighborhood was filled with neighbors that were like family and many would gather for “wine time” after church on Sundays. Patricia would cook big Sunday dinners every week where you would not only find her large family but often friends as well. The Welchs’ door was always open to friends and family alike, and many evenings were spent with someone sitting at the table sharing a story and a drink. The family also spent many memorable summers at her camp on Pettingill Pond in North Windham. Pat went to work for the Portland School Department as a teacher’s aide and library assistant for over 20 years, mainly at King Middle School. After her retirement, she spent many years taking care of her precious grandchildren. Pat had a generous, fun-loving nature and a natural gift for entertaining. Pat would often host the King MS get togethers and annual Christmas parties at her home, as well as any other time that a get-together was necessary. Pat was a Red Sox fanatic and also loved to watch Jeopardy, many times asking people to watch with her to show off how smart she was -she knew all the answers! Pat loved to travel. A few of her favorite trips were to Jamaica, Ireland and Hawaii. She loved to decorate her home and refinish furniture - you could find her painting just about anything, often in her favorite color, blue. She enjoyed cooking and knitting and had the greenest thumb around. She was also a lover of movies, books and poetry. Pat’s absolute favorite pass time, however, was spending time with her family and friends. Pat was very active in the St Patrick’s Church Community for many years, along with her husband Ed, running the church dances, the 400 club and helping out at the annual church Bazaar. After 55 years of living on Mass Ave, Pat moved to Gorham with her daughter Erin’s family in 2008 and was most often found sitting on her front porch swing enjoying life!
Patricia was predeceased by her parents, her husband Edward Welch and her daughter Colleen Brissette; siblings Beatrice Poland, Dorothy Estabrook, Ashley Ellis, Maurice Ellis and Marty O’Donnell, as well as her special step sister Evelyn Arsenault, and many other step siblings, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Patricia is survived by her children, Edward Welch and his wife, Lisa, of Ellsworth: Susan Fairweather and her husband, John, of Portland; Kelly Kenyon and her husband, Stephen, of Harpswell; Philip Welch and his wife, Kate, of Falmouth; Erin Thibodeau and her husband, Troy, of Gorham; and son-in-law, Ralph Brissette, of Gardiner; 14 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
