Joe David Featherstone - March 27, 1945 - March 28, 2024

Departed: 03/28/2024 (Conroe)
Obituary Preview: Joe David Featherstone left this world behind on March 28, 2024, with his loving wife Katie by his side. He joined our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at the age of 79. He was also reunited with his favorite horses, Junior and Poco, and four legged riding buddy, Dooley. Joe had a special place in his heart for his animals, so there is no doubt they were happy to see him and ready to ride again.
Joe David was welcomed to this world on March 27, 1945, by Tom Bill and Dolly Simms Featherstone. As young boys, Joe and big brother Tommy learned to love country life together while living in Centerville, Texas. After his father’s untimely death, Joe’s mother Dolly remarried and gave birth to his little sister Robin. Joe grew up in the Spring Branch area and graduated from Spring Branch High School in 1963. Later that same year, he was hired as an Engineer Tech for the Department of Highways and Public Transportation.
Joe married his high school sweetheart Vickie, and was blessed with two daughters, Jamie Denise and Jennifer Dawn, within fourteen months of each other. Joe and his second wife Geneva welcomed his youngest daughter, Jolene Deva, in 1974.
In 1976, he started a new career as a Sales Manager for Houston Bumper and continued working in the sales/auto parts industry for the next 35 years. During this time, he also restored antique vehicles and transported race horses all over the United States. While working for his son-in-law Jesse’s company, Joe got the chance to use his charming and convincing personality yet again. He was tasked with informing land owners about the clearing of the right of way on their property, collecting outstanding debts from customers, and keeping the employees in line too. They never knew what he was going to say or do next, so he kept them on their toes. Even though he was the safety instructor, the field guys always looked forward to him visiting the job site because they knew he kept candy in his truck for them.
Joe was heavily involved for many years in the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and the Montgomery County Fair Association. He was a Lifetime Member of both. He enjoyed taking part in barbecue cook-off competitions with his team “The Maverick Cookers.” They did quite well, won many trophies, and fed a lot of lucky people throughout the years.
Whether he was riding for fun, doing team penning, or running relay races at the Texas Renaissance Festival, Joe’s happy place was on the back of one of his much loved horses. Since horseback riding was in his blood, trail rides were another favorite pastime. “The Maverick Trail Riders Group” were like his second family. He shared many good times with them laughing, dancing, and playing dominoes. He shared his love of horses with his kids, grandkids, and the children who called Boys and Girls Country of Houston their home. He was thrilled about how taken those kids were with his horse Junior.
Playing Spades with his girls at the holidays was a tradition, and his specialty was playing “cut-throat." He delighted in watching his opponents (daughters) squirm as he won again and again. He knew how much his girls loved his cooking and baking too. After his kids took home all the holiday leftovers one year, he started making extra food, so Katie and he would have some leftovers too. Spending time with his family and going to his grandkids events brought him great joy.
His wife Katie also brought him great joy. They started dating in 2000 and were married, May 31, 2013. She adored him, and the feeling was mutual. They shared so many fun and memorable experiences and treasured their time together. Instead of buying presents for each other on special occasions, they saved their money for little get-aways. One of their favorites was visiting the casinos with their stack of $1 bills. With her kind heart, she brought out his more gentle, mellow side, and his fun-loving personality, brought her out of her naturally shy shell.
Joe always kept busy with various projects, like building sheds, repairing fences, fixing wagons, or working on meat smokers. Even though he retired at the age of 70, he never stopped working. He kept busy with household repairs outside and household chores inside. He wanted to iron all their clothes because he knew he would do it better and didn’t believe in paying someone else to do something he could do himself.
With his devious grin and unique dance moves, Joe was always the life of the party. He lived life to the fullest, was dearly loved, and will be greatly missed by all. Praise God for the wonderful blessing of our time with him and the memories we will cherish and share for the rest of our lives.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Katie; his brother, Tommy Featherstone and wife Terry; his sister, Robin Cruser and husband Jeff; his daughters, Jamie Featherstone, Jennifer Martinez and husband Jesse, and Jolene Featherstone; his step-daughter, Carly Crawford and husband Matt; step-son James E. Davis III; grandchildren, Jenna, Johnny, Julia, Jillian, Gavin, Avery, Jaxon, Jace, and Drew; several cousins; other family members; his beloved dog, Ringo; and numerous friends, who were like family to him.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, April 27th at 11:00 A.M. in The Chapel at Conroe Funeral Directors at 1504 N. Thompson Street, Conroe, Texas 77301.

Keith Cormack - November 24, 1964 - January 25, 2024

Departed: 01/25/2024 (Conroe)
Obituary Preview: Larry “Keith” Cormack born in Stuggart, Arkansas on November 24, 1964 passed away peacefully into the arms of our Lord on Thursday, January 25, 2024 at home with family by his side. He showed such strength and courage in his battle against cancer, he fought the good fight and was an inspiration to us all.
Keith was raised in Conroe and enjoyed all the benefits of small-town life. He lived in a tight-knit community, played outside till dusk, and experienced the true thrill of "Friday night lights" playing football at CHS. However, most importantly, it is where he met his lifelong friends.
Keith was a very friendly person who always had a desire to help others. He would spend hours talking to anyone who needed help, and he would be their friend. For him, helping people was like a calling. He deeply cared for his friends and family, especially his parents, with whom he shared a strong bond. He always made sure that they knew how much he loved them. Seeing people happy was something that made him very happy too.
Keith had a great passion for honoring the military personnel who served our country. He had a genuine desire to serve and was an enthusiastic volunteer with Wreath’s across America. For over 30 years, he was part of the Texas Chowboy’s cook-off team in Montgomery County and had formed lifelong friendships with his teammates.
Keith was an amazing cook and loved to create, grow and share recipes with his family and friends, but he also enjoyed eating out. He was a Foodie before being a Foodie was cool! Every year Keith grew many varieties of tomatoes, mostly to give away, which gave him great joy to share the bounty of his garden.
Keith attended Sam Houston State University and then worked as a manager in several restaurants before becoming a Territory Sales Representative for North Houston/Conroe areas. He worked for Glazer for 13 years before joining Sysco. While working at Glazer, he became friends with the owners of a new restaurant called Tin Roof BBQ in Atascocita. Keith was always ready to help them in any way possible and was considered a "go-to" guy. Later in his career, he became a manager at the restaurant and continued to provide his ongoing support. Keith's last job was with Automatic LP Gas Co. in Conroe, where he worked until his illness. He greatly appreciated his time there.
Keith was preceded in death by his infant brother, George Michael Cormack; maternal grandparents, Johnnie and Margie Lane; paternal grandparents, Raymond and Gladys Cormack; Grandmother, Alice Cormack (his only great grandparent with whom he was so fond of) and numerous dear aunts, uncles, cousins and other family members. He is survived by his loving family: Mother, Patsy Lucher (Danny Smith); Father, Larry Cormack and wife, Patti; sister, Penny Darlene Roberts; nephew, Gage L. Roberts and niece, Grace R. Roberts. Keith is also survived by many other dear aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and a host of caring friends. f In lieu of usual remembrances, the family suggests memorials to: St Jude-Children’s Research hospital at www.StJude.org

Milton was preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Ann Smith; two sons, James Smith and David Smith; two grandsons, Micah Smith and Charles Smith; and his beloved wife, Beverly in 2018. He is survived by his loving family: Daughter, Robin Smith; Daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Robert Cole; Son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Tonya Smith; Daughters-in-law, Lola Smith and Mikki Smith; Brother and sister-in-law, Donald Ray and Barbara Smith; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers: Matt Hicks, Christopher Smith, Michael Hanna, Elijah Burks, Steven Burks, and Don Squyres. Honorary pallbearers: Donald Smith, Stephen Smith, Lucas Smith, Robert Cole and the “Slow Poke Sam’s” RV Club members.
Milton Smith was raised in Bryan, Texas during the depression, WWII, "the fifties", and the Cold War. These events had a major impact on his memories and the forming of his values. As a child he enjoyed making gadgets like magnets, transistor radios, and other electronics. He witnessed his first TV show in a neighbor’s yard as they all gathered to watch wrestling through a thick layer of static. By age 12 he bought his first amateur radio handbook. He later built his own Heath Kit for Morse code, received his operator’s license and used his call sign K5JQ on his license plate for decades. It was a natural choice to get a degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Army, and employed by Gulf States Utilities Company Technology and career didn’t hinder life for the Smith Family--but made it richer and fuller. In a recent reflection, Milton said, “I was married to the perfect wife. We started dating when she was 14, and I was 16. The best part of it all is our six children.” Throughout his life Milton and Beverly worked to further the Kingdom of Heaven. He was ordained as a deacon in June of 1967 at Woodland Baptist, and he continued to serve as a deacon at each church where he was a member. He gave out the Holy Bible with the Gideon’s for decades, and he and Beverly served God while camping with “The Slowpokes” RV club. Milton and Beverly traveled across America for over 35 years researching family history at libraries, cemeteries, courthouses and in the homes of many relatives—building relationships that lasted--and documenting stories that live on through their books and videos. In retirement, he created a newsletter for over 2,000 former employees of GSU and, he continued to support Wednesday coffee groups for his retired co-workers in pursuit of maintaining those treasured friendships. As an avid lover of technology, Milton put 100s of videos online about family, friends, trips, ancestry, and more. Milton left a legacy of leadership. A legacy of capturing life’s moments. A legacy of heirlooms, but most beautiful and undeniable, was his legacy of love for the Lord.

Donald Edward Heilman - December 18, 1925 - November 06, 2023

Departed: 11/06/2023 (Conroe)
Obituary Preview: In Loving Memory of Donald Edward Heilman 1925-2023 Don, a beloved member of the Windsor Hills community in The Woodlands, Texas, peacefully passed away at his home on November 6th, 2023. He was renowned for his graceful storytelling, especially when recounting his life experiences. He was born during a snow storm on December 18, 1925, on his family farm home near Ridott, Illinois, to parents Violet and William Heilman. He had a sister, Eleanor, and a brother, Robert, who preceded him in passing. Growing up on the farm, Donald was not too fond of milking cows; he gladly let his brother Robert handle that task. Instead, he showed a talent for working on farm equipment and even learned how to wire their farmhouse for electricity during his high school years. One remarkable skill he possessed was rebuilding the family's John Deere 2-piston tractor engine, affectionately referred to as the "Put.. Putt.. Boom engine." He spent countless hours in the fields, both picking corn on their farm and offering contract harvesting services to other farmers. After graduating from Freeport High School, he joined the Navy in 1943 during World War II and attended Electrician’s school at the Great Lakes Naval Base, graduating at the top of his class and serving as an electrician on a LST and minesweeper until the war's end. Thanks to the GI Bill, he had the opportunity to attend college. Initially, he enrolled in classes at the Jr. college. But, a high school teacher encouraged him to transfer to Colorado, and shift his focus toward teaching, where he discovered his true calling. Donald attended Colorado A&M in Fort Collins, Colorado, and graduated with a degree in industrial arts education. He then taught industrial arts at West Junior High School in Denver. During the summers, he pursued his passion for carpentry by working as a finish carpenter on numerous custom homes in Denver to make ends meet. He also taught evening classes in jewelry making and enameling at the Opportunity School in Denver, often learning the next nights lesson from reading the jewelry company catalog, which was like a book with lots of tips. He furthered his education, attending night school and obtaining an MA in education from the University of Denver. Later, he earned a doctorate in education (EDD)from the University of Washington. While in Denver he was active with the Shriner and was a 32 degree Mason at the El Jebel Temple in Denver. Donald was a skilled educator, always generously sharing his expertise to assist friends and family with various projects. He excelled as a master carpenter and the go-to "fix it" guy. While pursuing his masters degree they lived in Denver and then moved to Seattle to complete his EDD. During his college years, he met the love of his life, Leona Marie Lawrence at a Valentine’s Day dance. They became engaged on a subsequent Valentine's Day and enjoyed a loving marriage for 68 years, exploring the world together and creating countless cherished memories. Leona passed away in 2019. Donald and Leona had two sons, Alan, born in 1953, and David, who tragically passed away shortly after birth due to a blood Rh reaction. He is survived by his son Alan and his wife Elizabeth, who live on lake Conroe, His granddaughter, Rebecca, husband Daniel Davison, and daughters, Eve and Hadley and Elizabeth, her husband, Mark Greenburg, and daughter, Frances, and son, Charlie Alan. All reside in Houston. He also had extended family in Denver, including several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart. He meticulously documented his family history on ancestry.com and loved connecting with other family members to get more data to share. He loved documenting fun events in his photo journal from big things and small things. He had 3 volumes in photo journals and they were testament to his creativity. A chance encounter with a local police officer during a return trip to Seattle led to unexpected adventures, including free passes to the Seattle World's Fair, a key to the city, and an airplane flight around the city. In 1964, they relocated from Colorado to DeKalb, Illinois, where Donald joined Northern Illinois University as the foreign student advisor. He also taught philosophy and education courses and later supervised student teachers at the University of Houston. Seeking refuge from the northern Illinois weather, they eventually retired, and moved to Sugar Land, Texas, to be closer to Alan's family while teaching part time at the University of Houston supervising student teacher's. They embraced the new community, developed strong bonds with their neighbors, and became fixtures at their grandchildren's events and sporting games, cherishing their time with Rebecca and Elizabeth. Donald's infectious smile and zest for life left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. A repository of life's wisdom, he enjoyed sharing stories and had a wonderful sense of humor, rarely complaining about anything except Brussels Sprouts and Garlic and he had a fondness for Bow ties, puzzles, and sweaters. His inspiring attitude and wonderful spirit touched the hearts of many, and his memory will be cherished forever. The family would request no flowers. If you wish, please make a donation to the Shriners hospital.
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in The Chapel at Conroe Funeral Directors.

Yes! Many families prefer that donations be made to a favorite charity in lieu of sending flowers. Be sure to include details on how donations can be made and where they will go.

How do I ensure that an obituary is accurate and respectful?

Take your time when writing the obituary, and proofread carefully for errors. Also consider having multiple people review the draft before submitting it for publication. Remember that this is a permanent tribute to the person who has passed away – make it count!
