Willa Elizabeth Tomchuk - August 24, 2014 - April 28, 2024

Departed: 04/28/2024 (St. Albert)
Obituary Preview: To view Willa's service, please click here.
Willa Elizabeth, a beacon of courage and love, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2024, after a valiant fight with brain cancer. Born on August 24, 2014, in St. Albert, she was a cherished daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin and friend. Willa’s nine years were marked by her indomitable spirit and her ability to inspire everyone she met.
Willa was the beloved daughter of Michael and Andrea, and the adored big sister of Weston. Her bond with her family was the cornerstone of her life. She was the pride and joy of her grandparents, Lynn Mulrooney (Nana), the late William Mulrooney (Poppy), Huguette Bouffard (Grandmaman), and Bruce & Debbie Tomchuk (Grandpa & Nana). Willa was also lovingly remembered by her great-grandmother, Jeanne Bouffard (Memere), and she was a cherished memory of her late great-grandparents, Elizabeth (Gammy) & Cyril Martin. Her extended family of cousins, aunts, and uncles will forever hold the memory of Willa’s bright spirit in their hearts.
A special thank you to Dr. Chatur (Willa’s primary doctor) who was with us when Willa passed to make sure it went exactly how we want it to. Also to her homecare team as well as Willa’s bedside nurses for making these past few weeks as calm and comforting as they were for not only Willa but our family. We will carry our absolute appreciation for you in our hearts forever.
Willa’s love for Disney was as vast as the ocean, with a particular fondness for the iconic villains who were as complex and vivid as her own imagination. The sight of the Disney Castle on screen was enough to light up her entire being, a joy that was magnified when she saw it in person. Her world was painted in her favorite color, purple, a hue that embodied the depth and warmth of her personality, much like her treasured purple Baby Bunny that never left her side.
Willa’s love for the cuddly Koalas sprang from her favorite movie “Sing,” a film that captured her heart and filled her with happiness. Willa was a water baby at heart, with swimming being some of her most cherished past time . She found solace in the water, where she could be free and buoyant, embracing the freedom that the water provided.
Willa loved being part of a school community. Being around her classmates and friends brought so much sparkle to her eye. Often being annoyed if Ms. Joyce (her main nurse who went to school with her) was in front of her blocking the kids from her view.
Books were windows to magical worlds for Willa, and those who had the privilege of reading to her knew they held a special place in her life. Her recent adventure into the realms of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson brought new dimensions of wonder to her already vivid imagination. Loving, courageous, and spirited are the words that best describe Willa. She faced her journey with a bravery that belied her years and a sweet face that touched all who knew her. In the face of adversity, Willa showed us what true courage looks like, reminding us of the words of A.A. Milne, “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
Willa’s legacy is one of love and bravery. She taught us to cherish every moment, to find joy in the small things, and to approach life with a fearless heart. Her spirit will continue to be a guiding light for her family and all who were blessed to know her.
Willa Elizabeth’s life was a precious gift to us all, and though her time here was shorter than we had hoped, the impact she made will be felt for generations. As we say goodbye to this remarkable young soul, we take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace, free from pain, and that her legacy of love and courage will continue to inspire us every day.
A ceremony will be held in St. Albert Funeral Home on Friday, May 10th at 2:00 pm, where Willa was born and where she took her last breath, surrounded by the love of her family and the community that adored her. Her light will forever shine in the hearts of those she leaves behind. If you wish, we ask you to wear purple.

Mervin Roger Sims - November 17, 1944 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (St. Albert)
Obituary Preview: To view the livestream of the service, please click here.
Mervin Roger Sims, known fondly as Roger, passed away peacefully at Pilgrims Hospice in Edmonton, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and an enduring legacy of love. Born in Consort, Alberta to parents Lee and Grace Sims of Veteran, Roger touched countless hearts with his generosity, humour, and unwavering spirit throughout his life.
Growing up in the tight-knit village of Veteran, Roger forged lifelong friendships and cherished memories while playing hockey, ball, pool, and the occasional game of hooky. His childhood experiences instilled in him a strong work ethic and a passion for community involvement.
Roger's love story began when he met the love of his life, Carol Elizabeth Craig. Together, they embarked on a journey filled with laughter, adventure, and deep companionship, celebrating nearly 60 years of marriage. Their bond was the cornerstone of their family, and Roger took immense pride in being father to Craig (Marianne) Sims, Barbara (Scott) McKee, and Leland (Karen) Sims. The softer, loving side of Roger was on full display when he was around his treasured grandchildren Madison and Coleman McKee, Marina and Jack Sims and their mom Christine Whalen, and Lauryn, Audrey and Grace Sims.
Roger's entrepreneurial spirit led him down various paths, from farming grain and cattle to venturing into construction and manufacturing. His dedication to his work was matched only by his passion for serving others. Roger was a pillar of his community, dedicating his time and energy to causes close to his heart. As a Charter Member of the Veteran Lions Club and a 40+ year member of the St. Albert Breakfast Lions, he embodied the Lions' motto of "We Serve" in everything he did. Roger also generously dedicated his time to the St. Albert Food Bank, the Refugee Committee of St. Albert, the RV Condo Association as well as several campaigns for municipal and provincial politics.
Roger loved the outdoors. Hunting with his friends in the Big Country was a favourite pastime. He was an avid golfer and fisherman and enjoyed time spent camping around the fire. Not many could best him in cribbage, although daily games with Carol did leave him skunked more times than he’d like to admit.
Roger and Carol's love for travel took them to far-flung lands, creating unforgettable memories. From exploring the vibrant streets of Europe to basking in the sun-kissed beaches of Grenada with their beloved Baptiste family, every adventure was a testament to their love and shared interest in exploring new vistas. Friendships were forged, and old friendships renewed in Rio Bend, El Centro, California as he and Carol embraced a snowbird lifestyle from 2002-2017, often hosting friends and family in their spot in the sun. In his final years, Roger loved retreating to Pineridge Golf & RV Resort, where he and Carol welcomed visitors with open arms, creating cherished memories that will endure for generations to come.
Roger was predeceased by his parents, Lee and Grace and nephew Jamie Auten. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and sister Jeryl (Darryl), nieces Catherine, Lee and Elizabeth, nephew Lincoln and sister in law Phyllis Craig, along with a host of relatives and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.
Roger can now rest easily as his legacy of love, hard work, and community spirit will be remembered fondly by all those who knew him. May his dedication to family, friends, and making a difference in community inspire us all.
A Celebration of Roger's life will be held on Monday, April 29th at 2pm, in St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Drive, St. Albert, where family and friends will gather to honour his memory and share stories of love and laughter.

Eric Edwin Savey - January 06, 1930 - March 30, 2024

Departed: 03/30/2024 (St. Albert)
Obituary Preview: To view the livestream of the service, please click here.
We gather to celebrate the life of Eric Edwin Savey, a man whose life was a testament to the enduring power of love, creativity, and dedication. Born on January 6, 1930, in the peaceful town of Vilna, Alberta, Eric's journey through this world was one marked by passion and purpose, culminating on March 30, 2024, in Edmonton, Alberta, where he peacefully passed away due to natural causes.
Eric's story is not just one of personal triumph but also of the indelible impact he had on those around him. As a District Chief with the Edmonton Fire Fighters, he served his community with valor and unwavering commitment. He was a beacon of safety and assurance to many, a role he embraced with both pride and humility. His work was not just a job; it was a calling that he fulfilled with every fiber of his being.
Beyond his professional life, Eric was a man who found solace and joy in nature. His hands, ever skilled and sure, brought life to wood and soil. He built more than just a cabin and a home on an acreage; he built sanctuaries where memories were made, laughter was shared, and love was multiplied. Eric's talent for crafting small boxes and pieces of furniture was not just a hobby but a means of expressing his love for friends and family. Each piece, lovingly created, stands as a testament to his thoughtful and creative spirit.
The love story that Eric wrote with his family is one of the most beautiful chapters of his life. His daughter Lynn, with her husband Tony, and his son Carl, alongside Cindy, knew the warmth of a father's love that knew no bounds. Five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and twelve step-great-grandchildren were blessed to call him Grandpa. Though his beloved wife Kathleen and daughter Lisa preceded him in death, the legacy of love they shared continues to flourish in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
The words that best encapsulate Eric are loving, thoughtful, and creative. He was a man whose very essence was to care deeply, think kindly, and create beauty. In every interaction and through every challenge, he exemplified what it means to live a life of purpose and passion.
As we reflect on the life of Eric Savey, let us be inspired by the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Eric indeed succeeded, for he lived a life that not only breathed easier himself but also provided that same breath of ease to countless others.
In the gathering of family and friends, both blood and chosen, we find comfort in the knowledge that Eric's spirit lives on. His was a life that illuminated the paths of others, a life that showed us the beauty of the simple, the depth of the genuine, and the strength of the caring.
As we bid farewell to Eric, let us carry forward the light he has kindled in each of us. Let his memory be a beacon that guides us to live with the same compassion, creativity, and love that he so effortlessly displayed. Eric Edwin Savey's life was a masterpiece, a symphony of the heart, and a canvas of the soul. And for that, we are all eternally grateful.
Rest in peace, Eric, and know that your legacy will continue to inspire and uplift us all, as we strive to live by the example you set – an example of a life well-lived, a life filled with purpose, and a life that truly made a difference.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, April 15, 2024 at 2:00 PM, in St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Drive.

One of his last hopes was to spend time at the family cabin at the lake...his wish was to sit on that nice deck watching and joining in with everyone having a fun time.
A memorial gathering will be planned for a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation c/o the Cross Cancer Institute https://giving.albertacancer.Donate
or to a charity of your choosing.

John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years, Karen; children: Carley (Steven) and Leah (Nick); grandson, Brady; sisters: Jacqueline (Jackie) and Debbie; as well as many relatives and countless friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Ruth Brown of Wetaskiwin, Alberta. On March 25, after a three year courageous battle with cancer, John passed away holding Karen’s hand surrounded in the love of family and dear friends. He was 63 years old.
Family was the centre of John’s world. He adored his wife and daughters, and held a special place in his heart for his four-legged friends. John beamed with pride watching his daughters move through life. He took special interest in their hobbies and interests: participating in girl guide trips, fun runs, school dances, dress shopping, gymnastics and water sports. John especially valued time at the cottage with extended family and friends, spending the summers boating, fishing and floating.
Throughout life John appreciated music in many forms. As a child he learned to sing. In his fifties he joined a choir, and taught himself to play the guitar and ukulele. John enjoyed golf trips with his buddies and truly loved the annual Windermere Open. An avid sports fan, he always cheered on the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Stampeders.
John completed a B.Sc in Agriculture at the University of Alberta. He had a long successful career to which he brought vision, experience and leadership. Shortly after graduating, he worked as a research technologist at the University of Alberta’s soil and crop research farms before joining Alberta Agriculture’s agronomy unit. John moved up quickly and held senior management positions in the areas of food safety, crop diversification, industry development, cereal crop breeding, and livestock research. John advanced to become an Assistant Deputy Minister: first with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, and then with Alberta Economic Development, Trade and Tourism. John was very proud of his final leadership role as the CEO of the Natural Resources Conservation Board. John was a natural leader, and took pride in empowering the teams he worked with and building confidence in those around him.
John was a kind and loving soul with a quick wit and great sense of humour. He will be sorely missed and forever remembered.

Jack Leo Chelkowski - November 21, 1997 - March 16, 2024

Departed: 03/16/2024 (St. Albert)
Obituary Preview: To view the livestream of the service, please click here.
It is with broken hearts that we share the tragic news of the sudden passing of Jack Leo Chelkowski. “The boy” to his Dad, “Jacky” to his Mom, little brother to Emily, big brother to Julia, Jickjack, Jack-a-Lak, Black Jack, Jake, and a million other nicknames. He will be missed for his big blue eyes, his genuine smile, his kind heart, and his big “Hello, how are you?”. We all admired his choice to be his own unique self, recognized his ability to see things in ways that were so very Jack, but worried that he didn’t always see the big risks. Since his passing, his family has been flooded with kind messages about our sweet Jack, his big heart, his genuine kindness, his acts of friendship, and his willingness to always lend a helping hand.
Jack graduated from St. Albert High in 2016 and his parents thank the RAP program for keeping him connected and setting him on a path for success as he went on to graduate from SAIT as a Registered RV Technician. Jack truly became a “Jack of all trades” and after working in Alberta and then BC, he was just beginning to launch his own mobile RV business. Jack was proud to be starting his own business and was excited with high hopes for the coming year.
Jack had a great love for people, animals, and especially the outdoors. Hiking with Jack could be an experience, he would be the one to find the nest, see the animal, or coax the frog out of the lake. If you looked at his feet you might see second-hand Gucci sneakers, flipflops, steel toed boots, or on one occasion, bare feet.
Jack was very creative and could play music, paint, and draw. His hobbies were varied and eclectic, whether it was ukeleles, unicycles, skateboards, bikes, or some crazy new vehicle that he would tear apart and put back together.
Jack lived his life to the fullest and was always seeking an “experience”, he would tell the craziest stories, find the weirdest podcasts, or talk passionately about the music he was listening to, the book he was reading, or the movie he had just watched.
Jack will be remembered for being so authentically Jack and everyone who knew him will always feel the loss of his bright light.
Jack is pre-deceased by his Grandma and Opa, Louise and Leo Chelkowski, his Grandma and Grandpa Joan and Chris Meunier, his grandparents Barbara and Jerry Malan, as well as his beloved Uncle Jeff Malan. He leaves behind his mom and dad Joelle and Ben; his sisters Emily (Jeff) and Julia; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and friends who are family. “Leave it to me as I find a way to be, consider me a satellite forever orbiting, I knew all the rules but the rules do not know me, guaranteed.” – Eddie Vedder

She was great at keeping in touch with her friends, whether it be writing letters, chatting on the phone, or FaceTiming. Avril was always glowing inside and out.
Avril fought a battle with cancer over the past few years. Watching her go through her health issues and heartache of loss was difficult, but we can rest easy knowing she is at peace and is no longer struggling for life itself.
