Obituary Preview: Brigitte Salontai, 97, of Center Valley, formerly of Bethlehem, died Sunday, August 27th at Sacred Heart Senior Living in Center Valley. Born in Germany she was the daughter of the late Willy and Margarete (Faustmann) Seydel. She was married to Elmer J. Salontai for 57 years until his death on February 21, 2005.
Brigitte was raised in Germany and during WWII, while working as a switchboard operator in Berlin for the US Army, she met her future husband. When she arrived in America, she worked for Hellertown Manufacturing as an inspector and welder. She was a member of the former St. John Capistrano Catholic Church in Bethlehem and more recently Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Bethlehem.
Brigitte will be lovingly remembered by her son, Elmer Salontai, Jr., grandchildren, Tamara, Kathryn, and Patricia, great grandchildren, Angelina, Alexander James, and Lyle, and one great great grandson, Toby.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church 730 W. Broad St., Bethlehem, PA 18018 from 10-11 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Holy Saviour Cemetery in Bethlehem. Arrangements Connell Funeral Home.

Obituary Preview: Thomas “OC” John O’Connell, 76 of Bethlehem Twp. passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Theresa R. (Schramel) who died May 5, 2008. Tom was born in Allentown on August 19, 1947 to the late John J. and Louise A. (Tadayesky) O’Connell. He retired at B-Braun Medical, Inc., in Bethlehem, where he worked in Quality Control. His passion for cars was well-known among his friends and family. Tom enjoyed his 1931 Ford Hot Rod, which he restored and maintained. He was a regular fixture at local car shows, where he shared his enthusiasm for vintage automobiles.

Patricia DePaolo - December 28, 1953 - August 15, 2023

Obituary Preview: Patricia Marie DePaolo, 69, passed away August 15, 2023, while introducing her daughters to her sweet double wide in Nokomis, Florida before it blows away in the next storm. She was born December 28, 1953, in Bedford, Ohio to the late Peter and Patricia (Kilelee) Caragher.
Pattie worked as a teller for First Valley Bank (and each one it transitioned to) for a number of years before moving on to her wolf pack at Wolf Distributing where she further honed her customer service magic. She wrapped up her professional life as a bus monitor for BASD, a perfect fit having off for all holidays, bad weather and the entire summer. Pattie happily retired in September 2019.
Pattie was popular and made an impression on everyone that met her. Weather it was her quick wit and on point delivery of sarcasm or her bold accessories and consignment store statement pieces. People were hooked.
Pattie was a proud member of the Elks Lodge and attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bethlehem. She had a social calendar that rivaled any teenagers. From Broadway shows, to soccer tournaments, to doctor appointments for grandchildren. Even errands were a suitable activity for her to leave the house. Some of her most favorite adventures were in the form of vacation.
Left to try and live up to her legacy are her daughters Meghan Hogan and husband Craig; Maura Hoeft and husband Casey; son Graham DePaolo and wife Christy Guerro; sisters Colleen Hunsberger and husband Steve; Sheila Beahm and husband Charlie; Kerry Satterthwaite and husband Roy; brother Daniel Caragher and companion Laura; grandchildren Hazel, Oscar, Olive, Dexter and Oona.
In addition to her parents, Pattie was preceded in death by her husband Phillip DePaolo; sister Kathleen Cacciatore; and brothers Peter and Edward Caragher.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, from 6-8:00 p.m. at Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St., Bethlehem, PA 18018. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 1817 1st St., Bethlehem, PA 18020. Inurnment will follow at Holy Saviour Cemetery.

Born on April 19, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Anna (Boletti) and Frank Wallich.
Cookie enjoyed going to Atlantic City and spending time at the casino. She also enjoyed playing cards. Cookie will be remembered for her love for her family—above all she was a tremendous wife, mom and nan.
Cookie will be dearly missed by her two sons, Jerry and Vinny Velardi; daughter-in- law, Robin; brother, Frank Wallich; two sisters, Eileen Link and Shirley Lachiewicz; and two grandchildren, Tony and Jessica.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Velardi who passed in 1994 and her sister, Cathy Wallich.

Irene was a wonderful homemaker and loved flowers, especially mums.
Irene will be dearly missed by her son, Richard and his fiancé, Sandy; brother, Robert and his wife, Jean; and one grandchild.
In addition to her parents, Irene is preceded in death by her six siblings, Martha Barbarics, Lottie Shanon, Wesley Fritchman, Walter Fritchman, Dorothy Kantor, and Helen Decker.

Caroline N. Sperling - September 23, 1934 - August 14, 2023

Obituary Preview: Caroline "Bonnie" (Neill) Sperling of Bethlehem, was 88 when she passed away on August 14, 2023 after a brief illness.
Bonnie was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but moved as an infant to Charlotte, North Carolina. Her southern accent was distinctive even after living six decades in the northeast.
Bonnie met and married Leslie Sperling at Duke University where they were both graduate students. She was studying fruit fly genetics, and Les was working on his doctoral degree in polymer chemistry. They moved to Memphis, Tennessee for a few years, where both of their daughters were born, and later to Princeton, New Jersey for Les' post-doctoral work. They settled in Bethlehem in 1967 when Les started as faculty at Lehigh University. Bonnie also taught economics at Lehigh for several years, and later worked in urban development in Bethlehem. They were married for 58 years at the time of Les' death in 2016.
Bonnie was a devoted cat owner, a master knitter, and a generous volunteer with many local organizations. She was an opinionated liberal democrat, and feisty until the very end.
She is survived by her sister, Nancy Kefauver, her two daughters: Reisa Anne Sperling, MD and Sheri Leigh O'Connor, her four grandchildren: Aubrey and Lyra Sperling Johnson, Ryland and Tresten Sweigard, and a brand new great-granddaughter, Olivia Sweigard.
Bonnie will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She wished that any donations be sent to Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley, Attn: Dina Kovats-Bernat, 1302 N Sherman Street, Allentown, PA 18109.

Obituary Preview: John M. Hengstenberger, 72, of Bethlehem, died Monday, August 14, 2023, in central PA. He was born July 6th, 1951, in Bethlehem, PA, son of the late John J. Hengstenberger and Mary (DeAngelis) Hengstenberger. John is the son-in-law of the late Gordon B. and Lucille S. Goodman. He was preceded in death by his sister, Joanie, sister-in-law, Judy, and brothers-in-law, Geoff, and Ross.
John, aka: Huntsy, The Hunts, The Big Cat, My Johnny, The Million Dollar Dad, Pap, Pappy, and Dad, was a loyal friend, loving husband, an awesome Dad, and Grandfather. Despite not feeling well the last few years, he always put a good face on for his friends, family, and nurses at Fresenius Kidney Care Bethlehem. John was a graduate of Liberty High School, Bethlehem, PA class of 1969 and attended Northampton Community College.
He worked mostly as a crane operator at Bethlehem Steel for 30 years, but also contributed to the daily operations of the Grover Cleveland Democratic Association in Bethlehem, PA, spending 30+ years as a board member. He loved to fish, golf, hunt, bowl, play softball, shoot darts, collect coins, root for the Flyers, (Eagles & Phillies too) collect hockey cards, play hearts, play dominos, and spend time in Clinton County, PA where he and friends and family would enjoy “the cabin”. He was a charter member of the Tri-County Rod & Gun Association where he served as President for many years. His passion for hunting subsided and an appreciation for observing the wildlife in beautiful Leidy Township became his enjoyment, particularly the bobcat, elk, deer, hummingbirds, and black bears. He converted Susie from an avid beach enthusiast to a mountain camping companion. He engaged in North Central LL of Bethlehem, PA coaching, volunteering, and serving as President. In addition to the above clubs, he held memberships with: “The Lincoln Gang,” The Panthers AA, The Jeff’s, The Wanderer’s, and Goodfellows Club all of Bethlehem, PA.
John will be deeply missed by his loving, loyal wife of 48 years, Sue Ellen (Susie) (Goodman) Hengstenberger, of Bethlehem, PA. His son, Brian and daughter-in-law, Amber of Allentown, PA; his daughter, Amanda of Bethlehem, PA; and his three grandchildren, Bennett, Clara, and Finley; his family, Richard (Bass), Joel, Jean, and Richard Walker, Jayne and Elmer Smith, and Mary as well as his in-laws, Doug, and Katie Goodman, of CT, and Vicki Goodman of Exton, PA. The Davis Family, Erin Hengstenberger, Liz D’Amico, Jeanne Hart all had special places in his heart, not to say all the cousins, nieces, nephews, and FRIENDS.

Obituary Preview: Linda Ozga, 72, of Bethlehem, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, surrounded by her children. Born on January 17, 1951 in Passaic, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Frances (Graziano) and John Hanisko.
Linda was a thoughtful, compassionate and loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She cherished spending time with her family and cared for them dearly.
She valued the beauty and peacefulness of Nature and appreciated a breeze through her hair, the sun on her face, and floating in the water. She enjoyed growing veggies in her garden and finding joy in God's gifts, which couldn't be purchased. Her Faith and family values were very important.
She was generous to family, charitable causes and home shopping networks. She enjoyed listening to music, reading, creating clever household solutions, and watching comedies. Her sense of humor, jokes and special expressions provided the gift of laughter.
Linda had a soft spot for animals and treated her pets (Tiffany, Tosha, Buffy and Snoopy) like family members. Above all, she loved her family, and always put them first. She could always be counted on to prepare holiday and Sunday dinners and ensured you were always well-fed.
As a Cub Scout den leader and a softball coach, she focused on the importance of "set up" and "being prepared," which followed her throughout life. She was very particular in her visions, strong-willed and kind-hearted.
She was a graduate of Clifton High School, furthered her education, and was employed as a Unit Clerk and Medical Receptionist for 20 years in the healthcare industry.
Linda is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Debbie Costello of Allentown; son, Steve Ozga of Bethlehem; brother, John Hanisko of Las Vegas, NV; sister Karen DeProspo of Newton, NJ; granddaughters, Jordan and Hailey Costello; a niece and nephews. Linda was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Sean and Ashley Costello.
A visitation to celebrate Linda's life will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. at Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 450 Washington Ave. Bethlehem, PA 18018.
A private burial will follow at St. Nicholas Cemetery in Lodi, NJ.

Ken proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army. He was honorably discharged after nearly 10 years of service and continued to serve his country as a member of the United States Army Reserves. Ken was a Christian that attended Transformation Church Lehigh Valley. He enjoyed playing Pinochle with friends and family, computer games, watching Walker Texas Ranger, traveling and trips to the casino. He spent 25 years as the maintenance man and electrician for the Allentown Farmers Market. Ken loved to help others in any way he could, often by helping with handy work that a family member or friend may have needed help with.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 10 years, Gloria J. Turner; sons; Robert Cohen, Micheal Turner, Milton Turner, Kenneth G. Turner, Jr. and his wife, Amanda and Richard Turner (Terri); daughters, Betsy Montgomery, Olga Rohan, Sarah Stancavage and Tekeita Nielson; brothers, Robert Turner, Richard Turner, John Turner and Les Turner; sister, Ruth Reyes; many grandchildren; sister in law's, Dr. Marlene Glass and her husband, Darrell Glass; sister-in-law Elder Joyce Eaton; brother in law, Bishop Charles Hester Webb, and his wife, Laverne and many nieces, nephews and friends. He served our country faithfully in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked for the Maintenance Department of the former Bethlehem Steel and then for the Salisbury School District in the same capacity until retiring. Gerald was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Bethlehem. He was a member of the Fountain Hill American Legion Post 406.

Ron worked as ground maintenance for the Bethlehem Area School District. He was a handy man—no matter what, he was always willing to lend a helping hand and could fix anything. Ron also loved working on cars or anything that came to mechanics. In his spare time, he also enjoyed fishing. He will be remembered for his kind heart, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Ron will be dearly missed by his wife of 41 years, Diane (Milisits) Buskirk; son, Shawn (Giselle) Milisits; daughter, Kristy Lynn (Scott) Weasner; four brothers, Robert, Randy, Richard, and Kevin Buskirk; two sisters, Robin Strohl and Patricia Ramley; and six grandchildren.

Rose M. Tadayesky - November 05, 1942 - August 02, 2023

Obituary Preview: Rose M. Tadayesky, 80, of Raubsville, peacefully passed away on August 2, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospital-Fountain Hill Campus. She was born November 5, 1942, daughter of the late Paul Beahm and Elizabeth (Serbeck) Jones. Rose is the devoted wife of nearly 59 years to Edward J. Tadayesky. The two met by chance on the Southside of Bethlehem and have created a beautiful life together.
Rose, affectionately known as Mama Rose, will be lovingly remembered for her selflessness. She put the needs of everyone who was important in her life before her own. Her kindness, tender demeanor, and giving disposition were experienced by all that she met. Rose’s delicious cooking will be missed, especially her pierogis. She could often be found watching the Food Network to stay up to date on the newest tips and tricks to add to her repertoire. Food was not just about nourishment, but it meant that she was able to gather with the most important people in her life, and her cooking was an act of love. Rose enjoyed sewing, gardening, and most especially attending her grandchildren’s events. She found great peace in feeding the hummingbirds and watching the butterflies at her home. Rose and Edward traveled the world together, once even taking the family on a five-week cross country vacation.
Rose was a graduate of Wilson High School. She later took a job with Dr. Donald E. Willard, a well-known eye surgeon in the area. Rose’s tremendous work ethic allowed her to progress in her career from receptionist to office manager, and later assisting with minor procedures. After over 20 years, Rose retired and continued to dedicate her life to her family.
She will be dearly missed by her husband, Edward; daughters, Vickie Bryant and husband, Master Sergeant Ray Bryant, Jr. (retired Air Force), and Paula Tadayesky; grandchildren, Rihanna Johnson, and Jaxson Tadayesky; and brother-in-law, Robert Tadayesky.
Rose's urn will be present for friends and family to pay their respects at Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018, on Thursday, August 10, 2023, from 10-11 a.m. with a celebration of life ceremony to immediately follow in the funeral home. Guests are invited to dress casually as the family will be wearing beach themed attire. Inurnment will be held at Northampton Memorial Shrine. She was born July 21, 1934, in Philadelphia, PA; daughter of the late Adolph and Mary (Zawadski) Dalint. Josephine was the devoted wife of 64 years to her husband, the late Albert B. Cech.
Josephine was affectionately known as Baca to her family. She was proud of her home and enjoyed crocheting and baking. Josephine was well known for her kiffles and nut tossies; which she lovingly made for birthdays and special occasions. Josephine also appreciated the fun she had on bus trips to the casino. She was a parishioner of Incarnation of Our Lord (Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church) and would often attend Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Sacred Heart in Bethlehem Township.
Josephine was a 1952 graduate of Bethlehem High School (Liberty). She began her working career as a bank teller and later served as a lunch lady for the Bethlehem Area School District.
She will be dearly missed by her sons, Albert Cech, Jr., David Cech, and Michael Cech, grandchildren, AJ, Katie, Jennifer, Nick, Samantha, and Matt, five great grandchildren, and her sister Manush Bossard.
Josephine was preceded in death by her sister, Theresa Schoenberger, and brother, Stanley Dalint.

Nancy worked as a mechanical operator at B. Braun Medical for over 30 years. In her free time, she enjoyed trips to Lancaster, the beach, shopping, watching soap operas, and doing her word puzzles. She had a special love for her dog, Tiny, who will miss her dearly. Above all, Nancy was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother---she loved her family, and they loved her. She was caring, compassionate, loving, kind and extremely fun to be around. Everyone who knew and loved Nancy will miss her tremendously.
Nancy will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Johnell and Melissa Schwartz; grandchildren, Matthew and Hannah; brother, David Kuhns; sister, Margaret Effting; sister-in-law, Lynn Kuhns; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Nancy is preceded in death by her brother, LeRoy “Sonny” Kuhns.

Dorothy graduated from Liberty High School in 1954, and her professional life was marked by her roles as a head bank teller and a jewelry consultant at Musselman Jewelers. She enjoyed keeping her journal, Bingo, reading, trips to the beach, especially Avalon, and traveling on cruises. Known to many as the "queen of her castle," she never left the house without something leopard print on. Family was at the heart of her world, especially her grandchildren. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Debbie Kulp (Harry), Michelle Wagner, and Valerie Ann Belle; her grandchildren, Ryan Kulp (Lauren), Desiree Kopec (Tony), and Melissa Wagner; as well as her great-grandchildren, Cohen Kulp and Kaden Kopec. An avid sports fan, Bruce loved fishing and cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Mets. He also enjoyed spending time with his family laughing, joking, and playing games together.

Joanne loved her several cats and dogs over the years. She enjoyed her time with her girlfriends, especially the trips to Atlantic City, breakfast gatherings and playing dominos. In her spare time she liked her sudoku, word searches and puzzles.
Joanne will be lovingly remembered by her husband, son, David Szaryas, brother, Wayne Wargo, 2 nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by her sister, Vilma “Penny” SeKoch.

Survivors: In addition to his wife, Lorraine of 53 years, son; Ryan Donchez, Bethlehem Twp, daughter; Gena (Dan) Sakers, Ocean View, NJ, grandchildren; Kevin, Sean, Keira Sakers, Chad Donchez and Gage Strouse. Frank is also survived by brother; Joseph (Audrey) Donchez, sisters; Joanne (Phil) Wagner, Margaret/Robert Eliason, and sister-in-law; JoAnn Becker. He was predeceased by his brother, Harry F. (Sonny) Becker, and sister; Elizabeth (Betty) Becker-Iannelli.

Mary Ann enjoyed reading, walking, shopping, NASCAR, and meeting her friends at Northampton Community College for Tac-Chi practice. Mary Ann was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bethlehem.
She is survived by her brother, Edward and his wife, Ying, and daughter, Jennifer, of Portland, Oregon. She is also survived by another brother, Julius, Jr. and his wife, Jeanne, of Bethlehem and their three children, Daniel, Seth, and Stephanie and her husband, Dr. Steve Young and their children, Allyson and Nathaniel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 1817 1st St., Bethlehem, PA 18020. Inurnment will follow at Holy Saviour Cemetery.

Michael will be remembered for his giving personality, even in his final moments—he was an organ donor.
Michael will be lovingly remembered by his mother, who loved and cared for him, Elaine E. Carraghan; brother, Joseph M. (Patricia) Carraghan; two sisters, Colleen (Bruce) Knauss and Beth-Ann (Brian) Ardinger; and his four nephews, Andrew, Eric, Bryan and Matthew.

Salvatore J. Guastella - October 23, 1925 - July 15, 2023

Obituary Preview: God created the perfect son, sibling, husband, father, and grandfather with Salvatore. He was a son of the late Sicilian immigrants Calogero and Filippa Guastella, raised in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn NY. When Sal entered first grade, he didn’t understand English. He recalled coming home and crying because he didn’t understand what anyone was saying.
Our dad joined the Navy and honorably served his country in WWII. Through his military service, he was given the opportunity to pursue further education. Ultimately the little boy who did not speak a word of English graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in mechanical engineering. The first college graduate in his family relished the opportunities America had opened for him.
He worked for Bethlehem Steel for 32 years and took great pride in his work. Our visits to Brooklyn required passage over the Verrazano. He never failed to comment “I helped build this bridge!” After retiring, he continued to give back to his community by volunteering at Bethlehem Public Library and his fellowship Club at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. His Catholic faither played an integral part in his life. He felt fortunate to be a member of the original Steel Club which afforded him the chance to golf and socialize.
His life revolved around his family. He weas the devoted husband of Alberta for 74 years. He had a close-knit relationship with his siblings, Lillie, Tommy, and Nicky. He was a doting father to his three daughters, Diane, Fay (Roethke), and Debbie (Ciganek). A hand on grandfather to his seven grandchildren, Theresa, Joyce, Becky, Joe, Jill, Lisa and Laura and was thrilled to see his 13 great-grandchildren! Sal treasured his family above all. Sundays were for big Italian dinners with family. It was important to him to maintain traditions. He was the perfect example of hard work, selflessness and love.
He was truly the “GREATEST” of the “Greatest Generation” and we were so very lucky to have been in his life.
A viewing for family and friends will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023 from 10-10:45 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 3219 Santee Rd., Bethlehem, PA 18020 with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Saviour Cemetery.
