Jeffery R. Demarest - May 10, 1946 - January 12, 2022

Departed: 01/12/2022 (Windsor)
Obituary Preview: Jeffery R. Demarest—biologist, naturalist, world traveler, great cook, and bon vivant—passed suddenly and unexpectedly on January 12, 2022, at his home in Healdsburg, CA. Martha Noble, Jeff's wife of 36 years, was beside him. He is dearly missed by his wife, countless friends, and colleagues from across the country and beyond.
Jeff was born on May 10, 1946, to Pete and Catherine Demarest in Harrington Park, NJ. During the Vietnam War, he served as a military policeman in Guam. It was there that he developed his keen observations of the natural world, a skill that would become a large part of his professional life and enhance his enjoyment of daily nature walks.
In 1975, Jeff began his Ph.D. studies in the Department of Physiology at the University of California (UC), Berkeley. His work with salt and water balance in the life history of fish led him to the UC Bodega Marine Laboratory (BML) in Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco. This became the perfect setting to collect and observe fish (and all marine life) while making life-long friends and colleagues. One of those whom he met at BML was Martha Noble, a Stanford graduate student who was studying fish behavior. Martha and Jeff married in 1986. Jeff was proud of his French heritage and enjoyed being called a Noble-Demarest.
After completing his doctorate, Jeff and Martha became itinerant academics as Jeff pursued post-doctoral positions across the country, first landing at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and then at the University of California, Los Angeles. In the later 1980s they moved to the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, where Jeff was appointed as a professor in the biology department. There he served as the department chair while Martha taught agricultural law. Jeff next received an appointment as a professor at Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA. Martha remained in Arkansas until she moved to Washington D.C., to focus on agricultural law. The two commuted back and forth on weekends between their Huntingdon country home and their D.C. apartment. During these years, Jeff developed a fondness for the D.C. museums, bookstores, walks, and restaurants.
As a naturalist, Jeff was fascinated by the biology, chemistry, and physiology of all things in the kitchen, including beer. During a sabbatical from Juniata, he spent a semester earning a teaching credential in fermentation science from UC Davis. He took this expertise back to Juniata where he initiated a course in brewery science. Several of his students have become very successful in the craft beer industry. Late in his career, Jeff served as chair in the college's biology department. His outstanding communication skills, insight into many disciplines, and great sense of humor provided excellent links between his teaching, research, and administration work. International travel was important to Jeff. Together, he and Martha enjoyed visiting New Zealand and a variety of European countries. Jeff also employed travel in his teaching when he conducted class trips to Mexico, France, and other countries.
As Jeff approached retirement, he and Martha decided to return to Sonoma County, which they both loved. In 2011, they purchased a house in Healdsburg. In their new location close to the Russian River, Jeff would often walk along the river path into the town center. While completing his doctoral work at BML in the 1970s, Jeff began exploring the Sonoma Coast for mushrooms. In retirement these mushroom foraging walks—primarily in the Salt Point State Park area—became a focused seasonal hobby that he enjoyed with close marine lab friends.
Jeff is sorely missed by his cherished wife Martha, brother Steve, all of Martha's family, numerous friends, and many colleagues. He is survived by his cache of fine wines and special beers.
A memorial event where Jeff's ashes are spread will be held at a future date when stories of Jeff's remarkable life and his influence on so many friends, colleagues, and students can be shared. Jeff would appreciate that any donations in his memory be made to the Undergraduate Student Support Fund at the Bodega Marine Laboratory: https://marinescience.ucdavis.edu/ways-to-give#StudentSupport or Habitat for Humanity Sonoma County at www.habitatsoco.org.

Sarah Lois "Sally" (aka Mickey) Vella - March 22, 1931 - September 23, 2021

Departed: 09/23/2021 (Windsor)
Obituary Preview: Sarah Lois "Sally" (aka Mickey) Vella
Born Sarah Lois Wright on March 22, 1931 in Geneva, IL to William Rosslyn Wright and Dorothy Overman. Sally was two when she and her family came to San Francisco for a job her dad got here. She and her younger brother Bruce grew up in Marin County. They roamed all over a yet to be developed Marin and as far as the coast on their horses with their dad, and as part of a riding club. Sally felt that her love of the outdoors and natural wonders came from those days. She was endlessly curious about the stars and planets, maps and geography. Her family settled in Novato and she graduated from San Rafael High School, and from College of Marin with a degree in Clothing Design.
She worked at a soda fountain in Novato, where she met Ig Vella. They were married in September, 1952 and she moved to Sonoma, which remained her home for the rest of her life. Sally was a homemaker in the best sense of the word and in addition to being a talented seamstress, she fed all the kids who passed through her home where she lived for 66 years. She was one of the founders of the Church Mouse, and the biannual rummage sale that preceded it and remained on the Church Mouse board for many years. Her specialties were caring for the linens and rehabilitating the dolls that were donated. She began collecting dolls, recreating the costumes they would have originally worn. She and Ig spent many hours promoting Vella Cheese at various tradeshows and wine tastings; we referred to their outings as the 'Ig and Sally show". She was also known for her midnight walks around town with her 'Petaluma chicken dog' Nipper. The only things Sally loved more than chocolate were her grand and great grandchildren. Her early soda fountain training came to the fore as her grandchildren all congregated at her house every day after school, bringing friends chocolate sodas, toast with butter curls, ham sandwiches, PB&Js, endless cookies, root beer floats for New Years Eve…
In her later years her garden became her refuge. She had Joanie Bourg design and plant a new garden for her and she spent many hours enjoying it. Raking leaves was one of her favorite pastimes. She spent many happy hours outside, with Tom and Ella's dog Wallace at her side. (She may have loved Wallace more than chocolate and grandchildren). And then she had the bonus of great grandchildren. She said that she finally had time to really focus on her time with them.
Sally was preceded in death by her husband, Ig Vella, her parents, her brother Bruce Wright and her youngest daughter Sara.
She is survived by her children, Ditty Vella, Chickie Vella and Tom Vella (Ella); grandchildren Gabriel Luddy (Stacey), Miranda Stoll (Andrew), Ross Cannard (Kate Cherry), Marius Cannard, Shaina Vella and Gia DeSoto (Tyler); great grandchildren Tano and Aria Luddy, Travis and Rebelanne DeSoto and Siena and Azure Cannard; her sisters in law Joanie Wright and Zolita Vella, and her oldest friend since they were six, Dee Sand.
Sally died peacefully on September 23, 2021. Heartfelt thanks to Sally's loving and dedicated caregivers; Carmen Velasquez, Vanessa Garcia, Camille Bosque and Susan Pieper. We were so lucky and are so grateful to them. And thanks to Bobby Cannard for his weekly visits and for taking her to see old friends and old haunts.
At Sally's request there will be no funeral. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Private inurnment for family will be held at Sonoma Valley Cemetery. In Sally's honor, memorial donations are preferred to the Sonoma Land Trust, 822 5th St, Santa Rosa, CA 95404. Inquiries can be made to CONNEELY FAMILY Cremation & Funeral Services by calling 707838.8883 or by visiting cfcfs.com.

He learned Ireland’s history and its politics and became a citizen.  He was committed to his faith and in 2006, together with Mary and his cousin Father Jack O’Neil, enjoyed a trip of a lifetime when they visited Rome, IT and participated in University of Dallas’ adult program where they studied the roots of their Catholic faith and culture.  He was an avid participant and so well-prepared for class that his professor asked him where he had earned his degree.  We are deeply saddened by his passing and will always remember his unique character, generosity, and genuine love he felt for all of us.

Joseph James "Jake" Wade, IV - April 17, 1984 - August 18, 2021

Departed: 08/18/2021 (Windsor)
Obituary Preview: Joseph James "Jake" Wade IV, 37, died on August 18, 2021 in Santa Rosa, California. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father and friend.
Born April 17, 1984 Jake learned from a very young age the value of family, love of nature and hard work. His first job started in grade school, working in his father’s local Wine Country Pasta shop and continued through his high school years at Justin Sienna. Attending Diablo Valley College, he became interested in finance and went on to be a “master of his craft” in the residential and commercial lending business. Working at Pinnacle Capital Mortgage and most recently at Finance of America where he was a member of the Presidents club for the past several years, Jake was known for his diligent and passionate work ethic. He became a mortgage lender because he loved helping people realize their dream of owning a home and building wealth through real estate.
After being together for two years, he married Nicole Cochran and together they realized their own dreams of family with the birth of their two daughters. Jake was a loving father who took great pride and joy in creating “field trip” adventure experiences for his daughters to the Sonoma botanical gardens, fishing, beach trips, lunch dates, hiking through the redwoods and strolling through the pumpkin patch to name a few. He cherished time with his family and loved big family celebrations, holidays and Sunday dinners where cooking together was an integral part of each gathering.
Born and raised in Sonoma, Jake had a great appreciation for the outdoors and spent time taking memorable fishing and camping trips with his brother and father. Jake was also an avid golfer and automotive enthusiast who enjoyed the thrill of driving fast cars.
Although Jake died far too young, he will be remembered for his candid sense of humor, contagious laughter and his love and devotion to his family and daughters. He will be deeply missed.
There will be a private celebration of Jake’s life at a later date. Private inurnment. Inquiries can be made to CONNEELY FAMILY Cremation & Funeral Services at 707.838.8883 or by visiting www.cfcfs.com.

Carol Josephine (Bayer Young) Schwartz - December 17, 1923 - July 21, 2021

Departed: 07/21/2021 (Windsor)
Obituary Preview: Carol Josephine Bayer Young Schwartz, 97 years of life on this earth, was born December 17, 1923 and passed away quietly July 21, 2021. She is survived by her son, Robert, and daughter, Aleta, 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Her loving family were by her side the last few months. Aleta and Rob were with her when she went home to be with Jesus - her Savior, Lord, best friend, strength, and guide throughout her life. Carol was one of four children born to Oscar and Josephine Bayer of Pasadena, CA. She was the last survivor of her siblings. She loved life and was a mighty prayer warrior for all – especially her family. She was a strong protector, provider, and encourager to her four children, Lani, Doug, Robert, and Aleta. Carol was gifted with a love of music and sang strong Alto in many a church choir.  She encouraged her children to appreciate music. She greatly enjoyed pouring her amazing craft talents into gifts for them. She was a great seamstress and duct-taper of all things! With a knack for figuring out solutions and creating alternative uses for things – she was a modern-day MacGyver!
Carol had an adventurous spirit! Near the beginning of World War II, she became a Rosy the Riveter… on and inside the airplane wings for the war effort.  In the Angeles National Forest, she was one half of the very first female fire suppression team, occupying a lookout tower. Together with her dear friend, Zoe, they managed the Warm Springs Tower for a year during World War II, watching for forest fires and recording tail numbers on all the aircraft that flew within range of their tower.
In 1944, Carol enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.  She hoped to see the world, but her first duty station was San Diego, CA where she worked in the administrative offices. She later would also serve in Hawaii before her Honorable Discharge. For many years, she was a member in good standing with the American Legion. For 23 years, she had a successful career with Kirkhill Rubber Company.  After she retired, she relocated to Big Bear for twenty years. Given her huge passion to help people, she became a volunteer “Pink Lady” for the Bear Valley Community Hospital, working in many areas throughout the hospital to aid the sick, injured and their family members.  Carol spent many hours transporting local neighbors who needed to go “down the hill” to and from medical appointments. She felt that one-on-one time was her mission field. Even in her last years of life, those who interacted with her daily said how much they loved and appreciated her strength, kindness, servanthood and her “you can do it” spirit! She was a consistent force of love, care, ingenuity, enduring faith, and goodwill for all who crossed her path. Carol will be greatly missed on this Earth! She was always there to love on us, teach us and help us!
