Obituary Preview: Wallace A. Streich of Zion, IL, passed away on May 1, 2024 at home.
Wallace was born September 17,1936 at Belmont Hospital in Chicago, IL to Lester and Evelyn Streich. They moved to Zion in 1946.
Wallace graduated from Zion-Benton Township High School with the Class of 1953 and attended Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa. He married Lois Nelson on August 27, 1955 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waukegan, IL.
Wallace owned and operated Streich’s Flower Shop in Zion until 1980. After selling the flower shop, Wallace went to work for Moose International as an auditor and later became Deputy Supreme Secretary of the Loyal Order of Moose, retiring in 2000.
He became a member of the Zion-Benton Moose Lodge #667 in 1957 and was a past Governor of the Lodge. Wallace received the Pilgrim Degree of Merit from the Loyal Order of Moose in 1999. He was a member of Waukegan Lodge #78 AF&AM, the Scottish Rite VOC and Medinah Shrine Temple and served as a past President of the Lake County Shrine Club.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; son, Jeffrey; granddaughter, Stephanie Post; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Evelyn Streich; son, James Streich; daughters-in-law, Carey Streich (Jeff's wife), and Sharon Streich (James' wife); and sister Shirley McCleary.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2024 from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. at the Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, IL. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Mark Rollenhagen, officiating. Interment will be private for the family at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion.

Obituary Preview: Pauline Francis Carr Olson, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Monday, April 29, 2024 at the Gibson Family Center. Her life journey began on November 19, 1936 in DeKalb County, Illinois, to David and Dorothy Zuelsdorf Carr. She married her loving husband Harry Olson on September 5, 1953.Pauline was employed at Lake Forest Hospital until her retirement. She was raised and lived in Waukegan, Illinois, before moving to Farmersburg to be with her daughter and son in-law, Debbie and Merrell Mc Neill. Pauline attended Shelburn First Baptist Church, she enjoyed playing bingo and paint by numbers. Her most precious thing in life was raising her family. She lovingly raised her children, adored her grandchildren and later in life her great-grandchildren. As of recently she was blessed with 2 great great grandchildren. One of the highlights of her later years was seeing Dolly Parton while on vacation. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; Harry Olson; son, Clarence Allen Olsen; brothers, Lawrence Carr, Raymond Carr, Allen Carr, Joe Carr and Marvin Carr; sister, Margaret (Mickey) Fitzpatrick along with son in-law, Anthony Biliotti
She is survived by her children, Joyce Bilotti, Patricia Pardon, Debbie McNeill (Merrell) and daughter in-law, Sharon Brewton; siblings, James Carr ( Kathryn), David Carr (Sandy), Alice Hale and Dorothy Bakley; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Dawn Barens - June 28, 1927 - April 25, 2024

Obituary Preview: Dawn E. Barens, 96, of Zion, IL, passed away on April 25, 2024.
She was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 28,1927 to Paul and Alice Meissner. She had a happy childhood and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. She did well in school and received a reward for being present and on time for one whole year. It was fun to hear her stories.
Later, Dawn moved to Lake County, IL and met and married Gerald Barens. They lived in Waukegan, IL, and both worked at Abbott for many years. After Gerald passed, Dawn lived in Zion.
Dawn accompanied Pastor Rose Simon on many trips together sight- seeing and experiencing new places. Dawn was blessed. Dawn was diligent to keep up on current affairs and knew what was going on in the world. She prayed for God’s will and help for all.
Dawn was very sincere about her Christian faith in God and loved Jesus for what He did on the cross to save souls. She was active in church, reading her Bible and praying. She attended the Zion Faith Homes. Dawn lived her life guided by her faith. She was a gentle soul.
Dawn was preceded in death by her mother, Alice; father, Paul; brother, Paul Meissner; nephew, David Meissner; and other relatives.
She is survived by her niece, Judy O’Neil and others.
The family wishes to thank the Zion Faith Homes, Dawn’s doctor and staff at Allure Nursing Home and Assisted Living and the staff of Suncrest Hospice for the loving care Dawn received.
There will be a service for Dawn in the chapel at Mt Olivet Memorial Park in Zion, Illinois on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.

Phil has an associates degree in Food Management, he attended St. Patrick Church in Wadsworth, Illinois, and he retired as a tool and die maker from Amco Company. Phil enjoyed woodworking, fishing, boating, Drumcorp, and making a family recipe of fudge during the holidays for his family and friends. Phil was proud to serve in the United States Coast Guard from October of 1965 to October of 1969 during the peak of the Vietnam War.
Phil is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Liz) A. Mayfield; step-daughter, Christina (Lee) Rosenburg; step-granddaughters, Jordan and Casey Rosenburg; sister, Helen Atik; nephews Jeff (Susie) Atik, Ron (Ulrike) Atik, Paul (Brenda) Mayfield, nieces, Leslie (Bob) Atik Preucel, and Wendy White; numerous sisters and brother-in-laws, and friends, along with his trusted dog, Sophie Mae.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Christine and Cybil Mayfield; sister, Louise Mayfield; brother, Thomas Mayfield; step-daughter, Jennifer Duch; and brother-in-law, M. Atik.

Dennis was born on August 13, 1945 in Waukegan, Illinois the son of Dallas and Dorothy (Day) Evans. Dennis graduated from Zion Benton High School. He married his loving wife Trudy L. Wagner on November 27, 1971. He retired from Johnson Motors after working there for over 20 years.
Dennis had a caring heart, volunteered for several years serving a local food pantry and volunteered driving friends and people in need to doctor appointments. Even though he was disabled with constant back pain aggravated by polio as a child, he would volunteer to mow yards for those in greater need and help anyone in need. Dennis enjoyed visiting the old Dunkin Donuts and even made deliveries for them when asked. Dennis loved visiting his brother and sisters and enjoyed playing jokes on them, even throughout his adult life. Although he had many nieces and nephews he tried to treat each one special. Dennis's signature traits were to enjoy life, to be of service to others, and to include humor throughout. Dennis was known for playing Santa Claus at the Lakehurst mall and privately for a total of 15 years to spread Christmas cheer.
Dennis is survived by his son Troy Evans; sister Etta Proeber, Susan Evans; brother-in-law Harry (Karen) Wagner; sister-in-law, Marlene Evans; nieces, nephews, cousins; and in-laws in Philadelphia.
He is preceded in death by his son, Kevin Evans; wife, Trudy Evans; parents, Dallas, and Dorothy Evans; sisters, Virginia Cook, Betty Chrismas, Dorothy Hanlon, Phyllis Nelson, Janet Hodler, Janice Saylor; brothers, Dallas Evans Jr., Clifford Evans, Donnie Evans, and Terrance Evans. He was born on August 27, 1949 in Manila, Philippines the son of Abel and Ligaya (Aldepolla) Peña. Benny served in the Navy for several years and worked as a Senior Chief Master of Arms, and as a Barracks Officer at the Great Lakes Naval Station. He loved music, by singing karaoke, and playing his guitar. He also enjoyed traveling, cooking food, and learning martial arts.
He is survived by his children, Ruben Peña Jr., Abeward Peña, Philip Peña, Michael Peña, Richard Peña; one grandson, Levi Dalton Lemus Peña; siblings, Adoracion (Charles) Peri, Frank Peña, and Romeo Peña; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Doris L. Manning - June 28, 1931 - April 19, 2024

Obituary Preview: Doris Laverne Manning, 92, a life-long resident of Waukegan, IL, passed away unexpectedly on April 19, 2024.
Doris was born on June 28, 1931, in Waukegan, Illinois, to the late Stanley Dupin and Virginia Midkiff Dupin. Doris was married to William (Bill) Manning and they built a long, happy life together, enjoying family life, dancing, boating, and gardening.
She was a skilled medical receptionist and worked for many doctors in the area. Doris co-owned Northshore Landscaping with her husband, William. She was a member of the Waukegan First United Methodist Church, a daughter of the Nile and a member of the Waukegan Women’s Club. She was a talented sketch artist and landscape designer. Doris designed the "adopted fire hydrant" signs seen around Waukegan.
Doris and William were proud supporters of the Shriners Children's Hospital. Doris served with the Tebala Shriners Motor Patrol as Pinky the Clown and raised funds and awareness for Shriners' work with pediatric burn victims.
The memory of Doris Laverne Manning will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her loving children, Linda (Manning) Sparks, Chuck Manning, and daughter-in-law Carol (Swift) Manning. She will also be deeply missed by her grandchildren, Tricia (Sparks) Groe and husband Frank, Stacy (Sparks) Stavlund and husband Michael, Billy Sparks, Jr., and wife Rebekah (Paulsen), Timothy Sparks and wife Margaret (Deaver). Doris also leaves behind 9 cherished great-grandchildren as well as beloved nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, William Addison Manning; her parents; sister, Donna (Dupin) Gjelsten; brother, Robert Dupin; treasured son-in-law, Billy Wayne Sparks, Sr.; and her sweet great-grandson, William Addison Stavlund.
A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, May 6, 2024 from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at the Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, IL. The memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. A procession will follow to Highland Memorial Park, Libertyville, IL.

Aubrey married his wife, Beverly Rae Gavin January 31, 1958. He attended a Methodist Church and worked as a Sheet Metal Worker for 30 years. Aubrey was a lifelong member of the Blue Lodge of Wilmette, Scottish Rites, Medinah Temple of Chicago, VFW, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, the National Association of Atomic Veterans (NAAV), and was an Illinois State Commander of Atomic Veterans for 9 years. Aubrey served in the United States Navy in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets on several destroyers and D.E.’s. He participated in five atomic bomb tests in the Marshall Islands. He was also part of the occupation forces in Japan and helped liberate Korea.
Aubrey is survived by his wife, Beverly Rae Biggs; daughter, Elizabeth Erickson; grandchildren, Joshua Biggs, Destiny Biggs, Presley Biggs, Aubrey James Biggs, David Robinson, Jennifer (Chris) Langston, Amanda (Steve) Pershke, Joshua Erickson, Jacob Erickson, Jessica Erickson, Shelly (Chad) Ward, and Cynthia McKinney; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Rebecca previously lived in Waukegan, Illinois. She graduated from Westlake Christian Academy in Grayslake, Illinois. She was a member of the Cornerstone Community Church in Wadsworth, Illinois. Rebecca worked for ID Label Inc. In Lake Villa, Illinois and Brookstone Printing Company in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Rebecca liked her job at Brookstone and the people she worked with, including her boss. She said it was a good place and she enjoyed the work in the commercial printing industry. Rebecca loved her faith in Jesus. She always talked about what she was learning. Just recently she was reading a new book by Pastor Tony Evans. She was always trying to grow in her faith. She wrote in her journal and read her bible daily.
Rebecca loved her daughter Rachel dearly. She was planning her 13th birthday coming up on May 1st. Rebecca already had four of her gifts wrapped along with a card. She loved her daughter, how could she not, she’s a beautiful girl and there is nothing she wouldn’t do for her.
Rebecca is survived by her daughter, Rachel Rose Durniat; father, Scott Wells; step-mother, Sue Ann Wells; niece, Allison Smith; and nephew, Steven Smith.
Rebecca was preceded in death by her mother, Geralynn Wells; and sister, Erin Wells.

Jacob Zappa - September 12, 1989 - April 15, 2024

Obituary Preview: Jacob "Jake" Richard Zappa was called home to the Lord on April 15, 2024, at the age of 34.
Born on September 12, 1989 Jake lived a life marked by his extreme compassion, generosity and his gift of music. His passion for music and his love of theater created a community of life long friends, experiences and memories.
Jake's love for Sports & Entertainment and food led him to a job at Levy Restaurants where he met his soulmate, Heather in 2014. It was love at first sight and they were married a year later. Jake had the opportunity to travel to some of the biggest sporting events in the country including working for the Milwaukee Bucks at both Fiserv Forum and Bradley Center, Ravinia Festival, Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby, the College World Series and the Indy 500. Most recently, Jake served with integrity and dedication as a Marketing Sales Manager for Pizza Ranch. His work ethic and collaborative spirit were blessings to his colleagues and the communities that he served.
After Jake and Heather moved to Waukesha, they searched for the perfect church home and found it at St. Mary's Visitation. He loved the community and often referred to St. Mary's Parish as being "Unapologetically Catholic", a phrase he coined himself. Jake and Heather used their God given talents to show their love and devotion for their parish by bringing lunches to teachers and even running the school lunch program.
Jake was an incredible and beloved husband to his wife and forever soulmate Heather and a nurturing father to their four beautiful children Isaiah, Isabella, Adeline, and Elijah.
Jake was more than blessed when it came to his family. He often joked, he not only had a family tree but an entire forest. He is survived by his parents, Rick Zappa and Jacki McElmurry; bonus parents, John and Kathie Mallek and Ginger Zappa, grandparents, Eva "Ninny" McElmurry, Violet Mustain, Evelyn Matson, Bud Matson and Patricia Mallek; siblings, Lindsey (Kelly) FitzMaurice, Ryan (Cary) Mallek, Karleigh (Fabio) Perazzo, Kelsi Mallek, Ashley Zappa, and Jeremy English, in-laws Diane Weseloh and Darrell Sheets, Wilma Sheets, Melvin and Karen Weseloh, Dale (Olivia) Sheets and Kristine (John) Velez; many aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces that he dearly loved as well.
He was preceed in death by two children that were too beautiful for Earth, Elizabeth Ann and Maximilian Kolbe Zappa; grandparents, Rosie and Peter Zappa, Michelina Santopolo, Errol Mustain, Frank Mustain, Daniel Mallek, Mary Savage, Elijah "Lige" and Eula "Momo" Dye, Jack "Poppy" McElmurry, and Frances and Jack McElmurry. In the words of Jake: "Remember who you are, remember who you love, surround yourself with people who build you up. Do good."
A visitation will take place Monday, April 22, 2024 at the Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, IL from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial to take place Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 714 49th Street, Kenosha, WI at 3:00 pm. Interment to be private for the family at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion, IL.

Philip was born November 19, 1965 in Park Ridge, IL. He moved to Glenview before marrying Jolene Mills on June 6, 1987. Phil was a deacon at The Tabernacle Church in Kenosha, WI. Phil loved the Lord and his church family. He loved being a Deacon and leading the Care Ministry at Church. He lead several Bible studies and he felt it was his God given ministry. Phil also owned his own flooring company, Kater Floor Service Inc. for 37 years. He was a natural born leader with a larger than life personality. He also loved visiting seniors. Phil was an avid car lover and enjoyed going fast.
Phil is survived by his wife, Jolene M. Gersdorf; children, Joshua J. Gersdorf, Benjamin C. Gersdorf; sister, Norma M. Gersdorf. Phil is preceded in death by his parents, Norman C. and Eunice M. Gersdorf

David Harvey - June 13, 1959 - April 09, 2024

Obituary Preview: David Earl Harvey, 64, of Waukegan, IL passed away surrounded by his beloved family on April 9, 2024.
David was born in Providence, RI to Mary V. Harvey and Billy D. Harvey On June 13, 1959. He attended Waukegan East High School, class of 1977. He attended Lake Forest College. He worked as a painter at Lake Forest College until 1986, then went into business with his own painting company. After shuttering Dave's Painting in the mid 90s, he spent the remainder of his career as a contract employee/Project Manager for Abbott Labs and Proctor and Gamble until his retirement in 2016. He often looked back with nostalgia on his childhood time in Charleston, SC and the years he spent in Jackson, TN later in life.
David was world renowned for his great sense of humor. He had a knack for witty puns, one liners, witticissms for any occasion and was highly fluent in sarcasm. He enjoyed impromptu road trips, trying new restaurants and breweries. He was a ravenous consumer of science fiction and documentary programs such as Star Trek, Twilight Zone and near anything on the History Channel. He was a CB Radio enthusiast. He enjoyed a range of outdoor activities such as dirt biking, boondocking, camping, fishing and boating on Lake Michigan and the Chain O Lakes.
The most monumental part of David's life was being a father and Popa/Pop Pop. He had an immeasurable impact in their lives and will be forever cherished.
David is survived by his mother, Mary V. Harvey of Waukegan; significant other, Teresa Camp of Burnham, IL; 3 children, David B. Harvey of Kenosha, Wi, Rachel M Harvey of Mccullom Lake, IL and Richard G.A. Judy was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 1, 1938 to Donald L McElroy and Kathryn J. Patterson McElroy. Judy was the eldest sibling to Kathleen Susan McElroy, who preceded her in death, and to Donald B. (Julie) McElroy of Peoria, IL. She was a graduate of Lindbloom High School in Chicago and went on to attend Lake Forest College where she earned a degree in science and education. Judy was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and developed many wonderful friendships that lasted her lifetime. Following her undergrad she became a teacher in Oak Lawn, Illinois. She then moved to district 111 where she met the love of her life, Kenneth O. Anton, a fellow teacher. They were married on December 17, 1966. Judy and Ken moved to Iowa where they were educators and became parents to Catherine Anton Sandberg and Kenneth J. Anton. Judy pursued her Masters Degree at Iowa State University and became a Special Education teacher and administrator. Returning to Illinois in 1983, Judy was a special education case manager for the Winthrop Harbor School District. She then retired and focused on being an amazing grandmother to Claire, Thea, and Finn Sandberg. Judy enjoyed traveling and crafting and creating baskets and cards. She was a great host to friends and family and loved a night at the American Players Theater or Lyric Opera. She supported the local AFS Club and the family hosted many international students over the years. Judy loved spending time with family and friends whether traveling, shopping, or having lunch. She was a supportive, kind and loving person whose smile, laugh, hugs and wisdom will be missed greatly.

After a brave battle with cancer, Lee went to be with Jesus for eternity. Born in Bath, North Carolina in 1936, he was the fourth child and the eldest son of Tilton and Julia Sheppard (nee Jefferson). He was a member of the U.S. Army National Guard while in high school, and after graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy. He served on active duty from May 1956 to May 1960. After completing boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois, he continued his training there at machinist mate school. While in school at Great Lakes, he met the love of his life, his wife Barbara Rose (Hanni). They were married in 1957 in Zion, Illinois at Zion Bible Church after which he assigned to the USS Oak Hill LSD-7 in San Diego, California. Lee was a faithful husband for sixty-six years until his death.
After leaving the Navy, Lee went to barber school and became a barber and was well known for his skills in the Waukegan and surrounding communities. Lee's Barber Shop, located in Waukegan, was a favorite to local customers, which he operated for many years until the building was sold. He continued serving his customers at McCann's Barber Shop in Gurnee, until his retirement after forty-three years. Often men who had their hair cut as a child by Lee brought their children and grandchildren to him. Long after his retirement, he continued to offer his services to family and friends.
Lee is survived by his wife Barbara; two sons, Bradley Sheppard and Paul (Rosanne) Sheppard. "Papa" was an adoring grandfather to Alison (Josh) Davidson, Amy Sheppard, Ashley (Kurt) Boehlein, Michael Sheppard, Luke Sheppard, and Rachel Sheppard. He had five great-grandchildren, Logan, Landon, Cash, Zana, and Juniper, and one great-great-granddaughter, Eleanor.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Tilton and Julia Sheppard, three sisters, and one granddaughter, Terra Sheppard.
Lee enjoyed family gatherings, especially for meals. He also loved working out in his yard, hoping neighbors would come and chat, and could often be seen riding the grandchildren on his John Deere lawnmower every summer. He loved the Lord, and it was his desire that everyone would know Jesus.
In honor of Lee's prior written request, no funeral services will be held, except a private, family-only memorial service that will be held at a later date to honor the beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who was extra special to them. "Diamond Lee", as he was called, will be remembered for his warm conversations with friends and neighbors, generous heart, and dearly missed by all who knew him.

Carole had the opportunity to live in many different places including, Oceanside, California; Manhattan, Kansas; Quantico, Virginia; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Keflavik, Iceland; Altamonte Springs, Florida; Jacksonville, Florida; Beach Park, Illinois; and Winthrop Harbor, Illinois while following her husband in his career as a Navy dentist.
Carole accepted Christ in October of 1964 while stationed in California, and lived faithfully until her death, serving as a Sunday School teacher and bookkeeper in many of her subsequent church homes.
Carole is survived by her children, David (Leslie) Archer and Christine (Rodney) Stare; and grandchildren Carlie and Paige Stare.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Jerald Joe Archer; parents, Robert and Corinne Callaghan; and brother, Robert Callaghan.
A visitation will be held at 3:00 pm on April 6th, 2024 at Victory Baptist Church (3401 Springbrook Rd, Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin 53158) followed by a celebration of life at 4:00 pm. A private burial service will be held on April 8 at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park in Zion, Illinois.

Jerry was a proud father of three chldren, Karen (Kurt) Hull, Erik Anderson, and Kristin Anderson. He was also a proud grandfather to three; Michael Lopez, Kalina Hull, and Kristi Hull.
Jerry loved traveling to state and national parks to see the beauty of the world. He also traveled to Europe and to Peru to see Machu Pichu. Jerry had a love for music, particularly instrumental music. He enjoyed watch his children play their instruments in concerts, and also watching his granddaughters in their instrumental musical journeys. He assisted with bell set up for handbell choir at church for many years.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Dorothy Anderson.

Sandy graduated from Zion Benton Township High School in 1964. She married the love of her life, Harland in Zion, IL July 25, 1966. Sandy worshiped at the Kenosha Bible Church. She retired from Central Jr High School in Zion as the secretary for 17 years.
Sandy was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She exhibited Christ’s love through her generosity, kindness, and time. She never met a stranger and loved striking up conversations wherever she went. She befriended everyone at the local gym that she came in contact with, which led to more talking than exercising.
Sandy had the gift of hospitality and wanted to make sure everyone was well fed, including the neighborhood squirrels. She loved discussing the personalities of each squirrel she fed multiple times a day. She had a special relationship with Jock Mary, the turtle that her son had 30 years ago as a biology project. Yes, she made sure the grandkids knew that care of the turtle will be passed down to them and back in Brett’s house for the remainder of it’s existence.
She had a stubborn side that was unshakable. Once her mind was made up, it was settled. Fortunately, that side mainly came out in her discussing her faith in Jesus. This is a legacy that she shared with her family and friends. Sandy will be missed, but her family is excited to see her again in heaven.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Harland ‘Red’ May; son, Brett (Jody) May and grandchildren, Kailyn and Dylan May.
She is preceded in death by her father, Mayford Patty; mother, Nellie Miller Watkins and brothers Eugene (Leona) Patty and Steve Patty.
