Katherine S. Parker-Lowe - July 01, 1959 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Manteo)
Obituary Preview: Katherine Suzanne Parker-Lowe, well-known attorney-at-law and cherished member of the Ocracoke community, passed away on April 11, 2024, at the age of 64. She was a native of Ahoskie, NC, and she graduated from Ahoskie High School where she played in the band.
Katherine's passion for justice and advocacy guided her throughout her life. After obtaining her BA from UNC Greensboro and her JD from Campbell University School of Law, she began her career as a staff attorney with Legal Services of the Coastal Plains in Ahoskie, NC. There she met her husband Keith Parker-Lowe, and in 1994, they moved to Ocracoke where she established her own practice and dedicated herself to serving the legal needs of the community as Katherine Parker-Lowe Attorney-at-Law.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Katherine had a deep appreciation for classical music, history, and her home on Ocracoke Island that she shared with her late husband Keith. The NC Symphony recently visited Ocracoke for the first time when the Symphony’s Woodwind Quartet played a concert at Ocracoke School thanks to influence and support. She was also an active member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church where she served as Lay Representative to the UMC conference.
Shortly before her passing she ventured on an exciting trip through the heart of Europe to Prague, Salzburg and Vienna - the land of WWII, Mozart, and the Sound of Music. She enjoyed keeping her family and friends updated on her travels, as well as happenings on the island, with her frequent facebook posts. Katherine was a successful lawyer and business woman and she achieved a significant legal victory when she successfully won an appeal at the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. She was also known as a zealous advocate for the rights of those in need. She leaves behind a legacy of dedication and service to the community as “The Island Lawyer.”
Katherine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Keith Parker-Lowe, and her parents, Lauretta Dyer Parker and Joseph M. Parker. She is survived by her brother, Joseph W. Parker of Raleigh, NC, an aunt, Suzannah Early of Apex, NC; an aunt and uncle, Gifford and Mary Ann Dyer of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; her step-children and her cousins.
Services to honor Katherine's life will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to organizations that held a special place in her heart, including the NC Symphony, Ocracoke United Methodist Church, Ocracoke Fire Department, or the Ocracoke Health Center.
Her family and friends take comfort in her reunion with Keith. They were partners in life and even though they rooted for different schools - he was a die hard Duke fan and she rooted just as hard for UNC - together they made a great team. They shared a love for cooking and they particularly enjoyed cooking for and entertaining the many family and friends who came to visit them on the island.
Services to honor Katherine’s life are being planned for the weekend of May 18-19. Further details will be forthcoming. The community is invited to attend the service and/or a reception following. Her family wishes to extend a thank you to Islanders - both old and new - who welcomed her, shared her community and kept an eye on her after Keith’s passing. A special thanks to Kenny Ballance on whom she relied.
Memorial contributions may be made to organizations that held a special place in Katherine’s heart, including the Ocracoke United Methodist Church, the NC Symphony, Ocracoke Fire Department or Ocracoke Health Center.

Michael Kent Smith - February 24, 1945 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Manteo)
Obituary Preview: Michael Kent Smith, 79, of Kitty Hawk, NC, passed away unexpectedly with his entire family by his side on April 4, 2024. Michael was born in Norfolk, VA, on February 24, 1945, to Clifford and Lillian Smith and had a sister, Sandra, and a brother, Tony. His parents instilled in Michael early fundamental values that became the bedrock of his character, and he lived and honored those values throughout his life, including his deep love for his family and his profound work ethic. He attended Oscar Smith High School, where he met his future wife and love of his life, Brenda Joyce Mann, and made life-long friends.
Michael later enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1963 and was stationed in New Hampshire earning the rank of Airman First Class. Michael’s values and character continued to develop and strengthen during this time. There, he learned the importance of honor, courage, diligence, integrity, loyalty, and patience. Serving our country was important to him and it also afforded him the opportunity to continue his education. After four years of honorable service, he was honorably discharged.
Michael then began his postsecondary education by attending South New Hampshire University in Manchester, NH, where he graduated with a finance and accounting degree. With this well-rounded foundation, Michael started his exemplary professional career. Professionally, he achieved great success working for large corporations in financial executive leadership roles, working for Sanders & Associates, Bendix, Allied Signal, Danaher Corporation, and Hyster Yale Forklifts. He reached the pinnacle of his career as Chief Financial Officer. This career and his dedication to it required that he and his family moved often - six different states in all. They collectively and individually made many sacrifices with each move but also gained many meaningful experiences and friendships along the way.
While building his career, he reunited with his high school sweetheart, Brenda Mann, and simultaneously started a family. With Brenda came five children ranging in age from six to thirteen. His love for Brenda was so great that he embraced a father-figure role to earn what became an immediate family. This is where Michael shined. His passion for the children led to strong connections with each of them and earned him status as their beloved dad. Family and friends often reminisce and chuckle that he went from bachelor to family man, trading in his Corvette for a station wagon and his condo for a house mortgage within a moment. Michael and Brenda raised five kids through many challenges with unconditional love, guidance, and support. Michael was a provider, but more importantly, he gave himself to his family. He was a good listener but also a great teacher.
If you ever spent time with him, he was bound to walk you through a life-lesson, step by step, whether it was the appropriate way to prepare and eat crabs or manage life. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren fiercely and accepted and welcomed each of their friends, loved ones, and significant others the same. The values and lessons he prioritized in his guidance to his family included selflessness, honor, integrity, fairness, patience, strong work ethics, and modesty. Michael’s smile and laugh were genuine and contagious, and he found joy in his family and life’s simple pleasures, such as gardening, fishing, being at the beach, and maintaining his homes.
Michael is survived by his wife, Brenda, of forty-four years. Together, they created a beautiful family that will always work hard to honor his life, love, and spirit through their love and support of each other and the legacies they will perpetuate. This includes, by families, daughter Debbie Norris-Hamblen, son-in-law Scott Hamblen of Kitty Hawk, NC, granddaughter Heather Ulrich, grandson-in-law Joshua Ulrich, and grandchildren Destanee, Westin, Corbin, Jasmine, and Beckett of Wendell, MN, and grandson Austin Munno of Wilmington, NC, great-grandson Anderson, and granddaughter Jordan Serrano, grandson-in-law Luis Serrano, and great-grandchildren Mason, Mia, and Cameron; daughter Kim Miriani, son-in-law Dave Miriani of Shelby Township, MI, grandson Tyler Gunthner, granddaughter-in-law Emily, and great-grandchildren Anderson, Eden, Leah of Washington, MI, granddaughter Madison Mosher, great-grandson Isaac, and Zach Walker of Shelby Township, MI, granddaughter Maria Mariani, great-grandchildren Benicio, Oliver, Harrison, Liliana, and Ryan Henry of Macomb, MI, and granddaughter Liz Miriani and John Ross; daughter Tammy Norris of Norfolk, VA, and granddaughters Lyndsey and Sydney Morris of Virginia Beach, VA; son Chris Norris and daughter-in-law Dianna Norris of Royal Oak, MI; son Tyrone Norris and daughter-in-law Julie Metz of Belleville, PA, and granddaughters Ruth Thompson of Belleville, PA, and Isabelle Norris of Elkhart, IN; sister Sandra Mann of Kitty Hawk, NC; and numerous other family and friends, including his grand-dogs, Tucker, Nyla, Bower, Knox, Beaux, Pluto, and Maggie. He is preceded in death by his brother, Tony Smith, and his parents, Lillian Harrell and Clifton Smith, and stepmother Nell Smith.
Michael/Dad/KPa had an enormous influence on his family and anyone who met him. Above all, he deeply cared about being there for his family. His life was an example of how to love, appreciate, and enjoy the simple gifts of life. Anyone who loved him would do anything to hear one more lecture or lesson, but we vow to carry on the lessons he imparted with grace, care, and thoughtfulness. Michael passed away in peace and with poise.
A celebration of Michael’s life is scheduled for Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at the Haven on the Banks in the Keeper’s Galley in Nags Head, NC, beginning at 1:00 p.m. (115 East Dove Street, Nags Head, NC 27959). In honor of his memory and his love for the Outer Banks, the family asks that donations in his memory be made to either the National Park Service, Outer Banks Group (www.nps.gov/caha/getinvolved/donations.htm), or the American Stroke Association (www.stroke.org) in honor of Michael K. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It often includes details about their life, achievements, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are usually written by family members, close friends, or a funeral home. In some cases, a professional writer may be hired to assist with the writing process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about their accomplishments, military service, or charitable work.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. A longer obituary may be more suitable for a online memorial website or social media platform.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute that celebrates the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Contact the publication or platform directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some may have online forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary text and photos.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers and online sites offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge based on the length of the obituary or the number of photos included.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life. This can be a meaningful exercise in self-reflection and can ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What if I don't want an obituary published?

If you prefer not to have an obituary published, you can specify this in your will or advance directive. However, keep in mind that an obituary can be a meaningful way for loved ones to process their grief and celebrate your life.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the person who has passed away. Including humor or personal stories can make the tribute more engaging and memorable.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. Be prepared to provide documentation or evidence to support the changes.

Can I update an existing obituary?

In some cases, yes. If new information becomes available or if there are errors in the original obituary, you may be able to update it. Check with the publication or platform for their policies on revisions.

What if I want to include a charity or memorial fund in the obituary?

This is a wonderful way to honor your loved one's memory! Simply include the charity's name and any relevant details (such as mailing address or website) in the obituary text.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, poems, or lyrics that resonate with the person's life or personality can add depth and meaning to the tribute.

How do I ensure that my loved one's online presence is respected after they pass away?

Talk to your loved one about their digital legacy before they pass away. Make sure you have access to their accounts and know their wishes regarding social media profiles, email accounts, and other online presence.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

Don't hesitate to ask for help from friends, family members, or a professional writer. You can also take your time and work on it in stages. Remember that writing an obituary is a process that requires patience and care.

Can I republish an existing obituary on social media or other online platforms?

Yes! You can share the original obituary on social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter, or republish it on memorial websites like Legacy.com or EverLoved.com.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform. Some websites may keep online obituaries available indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period of time (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check with the platform for their archiving policies.

Can I create a video obituary?

Yes! With modern technology, it's possible to create video tributes that combine photos, music, and narration to celebrate a person's life. These can be shared on social media platforms or memorial websites.

What if I need help finding resources for writing an obituary?

Contact local funeral homes, hospices, or bereavement organizations for guidance and support. They often have resources available to help with writing an obituary and planning memorial services.

Can I include memorials or tributes from friends and acquaintances in an obituary?

Absolutely! Gathering memories and stories from those who knew your loved one can enrich the tribute and provide comfort to those grieving.

How do I ensure that my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?

An obituary is just one part of preserving your loved one's legacy. Consider creating a memory book, scrapbook, or online memorial page where friends and family can share stories and memories over time.
