Eventually, this passion turned him into a business owner. He owned several businesses, but Yit’s Auto Body was his biggest success. Carmen Gloria Rodrigues - November 27, 1937 - April 05, 2024

Departed: 04/05/2024 (Livingston Manor)
Obituary Preview: Our beloved mother, Carmen Gloria Rodrigues de Valentin, became one of God’s angels at 8:05 p.m., on Friday, April 5, 2024, at age 86, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, surrounded by her loving family.
Carmen Gloria was born on Nov. 27, 1937, in the mountains of Utuado, Puerto Rico, to her late beloved parents, Obdulio Valentin and Carmen Valentin de Gonzalez, and joined a large family of many brothers, sisters, and cousins.
At age 23, Carmen Gloria met the love of her life, her future husband, Dr. Louis ‘Lou’ Phillip Rodrigues, in the cafeteria at Long Island College Hospital, while they were going through nursing and medical school, respectively. In their first conversation, Carmen Gloria mistakenly assumed Lou spoke Spanish…and thus began a long life of treasured moments and memories.
Dr. and Mrs. Rodrigues opened a pediatric practice and spent 55 beautiful years together in the Catskill Mountains of Monticello, New York, where they worked as partners and raised their children.
Over the course of more than 40 years, the pair devoted their lives to helping others and providing specialty medical services to over a thousand patients. (Carmen Gloria loved her patients like family—for many years, she held Friday pizza parties to celebrate patients’ birthdays and other special occasions.) Carmen Gloria was also a devoted nurse who worked with veterans at Castle Point Hospital and Montrose Hospital, both in New York State, where she also brought 'her veterans' goodies each Friday.
Throughout her life, Carmen Gloria volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol and Red Cross, including in New York City in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
In God’s perfect plan, Dr. and Mrs. Rodrigues came to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to visit their daughter in 2020, and made the decision to make their stay at the coast permanent. Carmen Gloria’s final years were spent among sunshine, sea air, and those she loved.
Carmen Gloria is survived by her husband, Dr. Louis ‘Lou’ Phillip Rodrigues, her son, Louis Joaqim Rodrigues, her daughters, Linda Elizabeth Alonso Rodrigues and Judith ‘Judy’ Marie Skordinski Rodrigues, and her grandchildren, Dom Luis Rodrigues, Autumn Chelsee Rodrigues, Kyle Austin Skordinski, Lexi Marie Skordinski, and great-grandson, Emilio Jay Rodrigues. She leaves behind many devoted friends and a large, loving extended family.
Services will be held at Burroughs Funeral Home at 3558 Old Kings Hwy., Murrells Inlet, SC 29576. The viewing will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2024, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The funeral mass will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024, at 2:00pm. A burial will follow. Loved ones who attend the services are invited to wear Carmen Gloria’s favorite color, pink. For further information please call 845-434-7363 or visit www.colonialfamilyfuenralhome.com

Wendy Giardina - May 03, 1952 - October 13, 2023

Departed: 10/13/2023 (Livingston Manor)
Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wendy Gross Giardina. Wendy was born on May 3, 1952 and sadly left us on October 13, 2023. She was 71 years old. Wendy was an insightful, caring, intelligent, and humorous individual. She was there for the people she cared about. Wendy lived a simple life after the tragic passing of her husband, Michael Giardina, in 2017. She struggled through this time but was still able to find some semblance of peace. We pray that she has now found eternal peace. Left to carry on her memory are a circle of friends, her church community, whom she embraced, and, of course, her dogs. Her dogs were literally her life. She appreciated the unconditional love they gave her and she reciprocated it back to them tenfold. She had a deep appreciation for connections, was always willing to join in the antics, and was deeply compassionate to those hurting. This will be the memory we keep! In honor of Wendy and “Wendy’s Words”: She kept her circle small She kept her friends few, but if she loved you, you knew it
and she’d look out for you. Her dogs were her world She’d take such great care She appreciated life And felt death was unfair, As we say goodbye to you, Wendy, We pray this isn’t the end And we’ll meet again somehow We will miss you, dear friend!

Norman Ray Graves Sr. - December 05, 1960 - May 17, 2023

Departed: 05/17/2023 (Livingston Manor)
Obituary Preview: Norman Graves is a native of Brooklyn, (Brownsville) New York, where he remained until the age of 17 when he enlisted into the U.S. Army branch of our military armed forces. Born on December 5, 1960 to the late Lloyd and Edmonia Graves, Norman was known to be a jokester, storyteller, performer, a really good dancer and he could turn anything into a song. He always had a smile (showing his little bottom teeth). Being the “Middle Child”, he was known as the “calm one”, the protector of his baby sister Elyse and “the referee”, (especially when their big brother Lawrence tried to act like their Father). He truly enjoyed being in the kitchen with his mother
watching and learning to cook. Even though he had some ups and downs in life but his belief in God, sheer determination and perseverance through those rough times, only made him stronger. After graduating Basic/Advanced Training at Fort Benning – Georgia, he went on to his permanent duty station at Fort Stewart, Georgia (3rd of the 19th Battalion, 24th Infantry Division). His military experience whether voluntary or by order, allowed him the opportunity to deal with challenging situations which prepared him for the challenges of life. From Georgia to the heat of the Mojave Desert; from the bitter cold of Fort Drum, NY, to the Everglades of Florida; from the United States to the Jungle of Fort Sherman, Panama, Norman was grateful and proud of his service to his country. He was honorably discharged in 1982. After surviving several years of tumultuous and difficult times, Norman received and accepted a job offer at, Daytop Village Inc., in 1991, where he went on to graduate from a counselor training program. Pastor Graves acquired both national and international Certification in SA counseling that allowed him to provide trainings abroad on contract with the U.S. State Department and Daytop International. Daytop Village Inc. further offered him a ground floor job offer, however, it was in Texas. Norman accepted the offer and relocated to Brenham, Texas. While there, he and his future
wife to be, helped to open and develop substance abuse programs for troubled teens. It was during that phase in his life that God began to reveal His plans for their lives. Norman answered the call to the Gospel ministry and was licensed to preach in 1998. He was later ordained in the year 2000 at The Antioch Church in Palestine, Texas, by his father in the Gospel Ministry – Pastor Roy G. Duncan. In the midst of all these advancements and blessings, Rev. Graves married Rachel Reeves on May 12, 1995. Their union increased Rev. Graves’ family that consisted of just him and his son Norman. 2 Texans (Spencer and Julius) and 2 New Yorkers (Eleisha and Elisha) were born. Eventually Texas Daytop completely closed and Rev. Graves and his
family moved back to new York state with the corporation. Ultimately, Daytop Village cooperation, closed. In 2008, God led Pastor Graves to establish New Beginnings Community
Worship Center Inc. of Liberty, N.Y. It was then, that Pastor Graves received the divine call and vision to establish outreach ministries in the local community of Sullivan County. From that vision, Begin Again Transitional Services (B.A.T.S.) for homeless male Veterans has come to fruition. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the funeral or memorial service. They can also help family and friends process their grief by sharing stories and memories of the person who has passed.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance in writing an obituary as part of their services. In some cases, a professional obituary writer may be hired to craft the notice.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies or interests, surviving family members, and details about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's best to aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most. Online obituary platforms often have more flexibility in terms of word count, but newspapers may have stricter limits due to space constraints.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes! Many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos of the deceased. Some newspapers may also accept photos for print publication. Photos can help bring the person's story to life and make the obituary more personal.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to ask about their submission process and deadlines. You may need to provide the written obituary text, along with any photos or other requested materials. Be prepared to pay a fee for publication, which varies by newspaper.

Can I write my own obituary?

Absolutely! While it may seem unusual, some people choose to write their own obituaries in advance. This can ensure that your life story is told in your own words and can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on your accomplishments and legacy.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional context about the person's life and achievements.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Yes! Humor can be an effective way to celebrate the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to keep the tone respectful and avoid offending anyone who may be grieving.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or visiting local libraries that maintain historical records. Many genealogy websites also offer access to archived obituaries. Funeral homes or crematories may also retain records of past services.

Can I republish an obituary on social media or my personal website?

Check with the original publisher (newspaper or online platform) to see if they have any restrictions on republication. You may need permission or need to give credit to the original source.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce your loved one's passing, you can opt for a private funeral service or limit notification to close friends and family. Alternatively, you can request that the funeral home or crematory handle notifications discreetly.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Absolutely! This is a thoughtful way to honor your loved one's memory while supporting a cause they cared about. Simply specify the charity and any relevant details in the obituary text.

How do I correct errors in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published as soon as possible. They may be able to issue a correction or reprint the revised obituary.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief?

It's completely understandable. Consider enlisting the help of a friend, family member, or professional writer who can assist you in crafting a fitting tribute. Take your time, and don't hesitate to seek support during this difficult period.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with your loved one's personality or values.

How do I notify out-of-town relatives and friends about a death?

You can use social media, email, or phone calls to reach out to those who may not be local. Consider creating a private Facebook group or online memorial page where people can share condolences and memories.

What if my loved one didn't want a traditional funeral service?

Honor their wishes by planning a celebration of life, memorial service, or alternative gathering that reflects their personality and preferences.

Can I include pets in an obituary?

Absolutely! If your loved one had beloved pets that were an integral part of their life, consider mentioning them in the obituary as a way to acknowledge their importance.

How do I preserve my loved one's online presence after they've passed away?

You can create a memorialized Facebook page or online memorial website where friends and family can continue to share memories and condolences. You may also want to consider preserving their digital legacy by saving emails, messages, or other online content.

What if I'm unsure about what to say in an obituary?

Talk to friends, family members, or colleagues who knew your loved one well. They may be able to provide valuable insights and anecdotes that will help you craft a meaningful tribute.

Can I update an existing online obituary with new information?

Contact the online platform where the obituary was published to see if they allow updates or revisions. They may have specific procedures for making changes.

How do I handle condolences from people I don't know well?

A simple "thank you" or acknowledgement is sufficient when responding to condolences from acquaintances or strangers. You can also direct them to a memorial page or donation site if they're interested in paying their respects.

What if my loved one had no immediate family members left behind?

In this case, consider reaching out to close friends, neighbors, or community members who may want to attend a memorial service or contribute to a charitable donation in their memory.

Can I include personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Personal stories and anecdotes can make an obituary more engaging and help readers connect with your loved one's personality and spirit.
