Obituary Preview: David Lee Meissner, 74, from Daly City, California, born January 19th, 1950 in Rush City, Minnesota, died April 21st, 2024 after a joy-filled life. David grew up and graduated from Rush City High School where he was active in music, sports, and student government “Go Tigers.” He was also an active member of the Rush City Baptist Church throughout his youth. David attended the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities School of Music, where he earned BM degrees in both Vocal Performance and Theory and Composition, and an MA degree in Theory and Composition, completing all his course work for a DMA in Vocal Performance.
From 1969 to 2002, Meissner served as choral conductor/music director for various Twin Cities schools and churches, including the University of Minnesota and Wesley United Methodist Church. From 1970 to 2005, he performed lead and secondary roles in opera and musical theater in the Twin Cities and San Francisco, including Postcard From Morocco, Amahl and the Night Visitors, and Fiddler on the Roof. From 1969 to 2009, he served as featured tenor soloist for numerous concert programs, including Masterworks Chorale, Augsburg College, Mont. La Salle Chapel, Mississippi Valley Chamber Orchestra, Hennepin United Methodist Church, Montana Chorale, and University Baptist Church. He worked as a tenor choral artist with the Dale Warland Singers, San Francisco Opera project under Bobby McFerrin, Sanford Dole Ensemble, and the San Francisco Symphony Chorus. He also played and sang in numerous cover bands in the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. When he wasn’t making music, he worked as a certified piano technician/restorer, tuning for Ray Charles and even Prince. An avid volunteer, he assisted in creating AIDS ministries early on in the pandemic, participated in reconciling ministry, and completed several AIDS rides including San Francisco to LA, Minneapolis to Chicago, and Boston to NYC. He also spent a number of years working a “day-job” at the U of MN in various academic departments where he eventually met the love of his life, Gene, in 2000.
In 2002, David followed Gene to San Francisco where they set up a house and established a wonderful community of friends. They married in 2008 and renewed their marriage vows in 2020. They shared many great adventures around the US as well as a trip to Ghana. David was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2014 which was further complicated by dementia starting in 2021. He enrolled in home hospice on April 5th and passed peacefully just 16 days later surrounded by “Team David.”
David was preceded in death by his parents Walter & Alice, sister Janet, brother Roger, brother Edward "Willy" (Linda), and brother Wally (Lois) . He is survived by his partner/husband of 24 years, Gene Chelberg, two brothers Fred (Pam) and Kevin (Linda), his aunt Arlene Hendrickson and numerous nieces and nephews, along with many cousins and friends. He is also preceded in death by Gene’s dad and step-mom Raymond and Jan Chelberg, and survived by Gene’s mom and step-dad Jo & Don Kurtenbach, siblings Yvonne McCarthy (Jim), Chris Chelberg (Theresa), Jon Englund (Donna Lugar), and Shannon Carson, Gene’s aunt and uncle Marilyn & Arnie Fichtenberg, his aunt Barb Buskirk, and his aunt Nancy Bischoff, and numerous nieces and nephews along with many cousins and friends. Finally, Momma Cat/Daddy David is survived by two four-footed friends Nurse Ruthie and Bates. Deep appreciation to “Team David” (sister Shannon and friend Melanie Cansler) for the extraordinary care and love they provided David over the past months. Sincere thanks to the staff of By the Bay Health for their support of David during his final days. All are encouraged to live by David’s and Gene’s wedding vows, “…fill the world with a little more joy, love, peace, and grace.”

She was predeceased by her daughter Diane, nephew Jason, husband Chester and companion Spence, as well as nine siblings and their spouses.
Elizabeth and her sharp sense of humor will be greatly missed by many friends and family in New Jersey, Florida, Pennsylvania and California.
