Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and funeral or memorial services.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes the obituary, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention charitable donations or memorial services.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's usually between 100-500 words. The most important information should be concise and easy to read.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help bring the person to life and make the obituary more personal.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to ask about their submission process and deadlines. Some newspapers may accept online submissions, while others require email or fax.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper?

The cost varies depending on the newspaper and its policies. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a basic obituary. Additional features like photos or longer word counts may incur extra fees.

Are there any alternatives to publishing an obituary in a newspaper?

Yes! Online obituary platforms, social media, and funeral home websites offer alternative ways to share the news of a loved one's passing. These options may be more affordable and reach a wider audience.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper's schedule and deadlines. Typically, it takes 1-3 days for an obituary to appear in print after submission.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

Contact the newspaper or online platform where the obituary was published to request corrections or updates. Be prepared to provide documentation supporting the changes.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can opt for a private or restricted listing on online platforms or only share it with close friends and family.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told accurately. Consider sharing it with your loved ones or storing it with your important documents.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only essential details like name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more extensive biographical information and context.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor and personal stories can make an obituary more engaging and memorable. Just be sure to respect the deceased's personality and tone.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

Tread carefully when sharing sensitive information like cause of death, medical conditions, or personal struggles. Consider consulting with family members or close friends before including such details.

Yes! Share the link to the online obituary or create a post with essential details. Social media can help spread the news quickly and reach a wider audience.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration varies depending on the platform or website hosting the obituary. Some sites may keep them archived indefinitely, while others might remove them after a certain period.
