Natalina A. Crochet - August 14, 1936 - February 23, 2022

Departed: 02/23/2022 (Waterbury)
Obituary Preview: Mrs. Natalie Crochet She will be remembered for her sweet tooth, incredible sense of humor, and her big heart. Natalie (Terni) Crochet, of Waterbury, CT sadly passed away on February 23, 2022, at St. Mary’s Hospital, at 85-years-old - proving only the good die young, because everyone who knew her was convinced she’d live forever. Natalie was born in Waterbury, on August 14, 1936, to Settimo and Rosi (Molin) Terni. She remained in Waterbury, where she met and fell in love with her husband, Albert Crochet, then together building a beautiful life and family through the past 64 years. Throughout her life, Natalie worked at Grant’s Department Store, Worth’s Department Store, and Worth’s Bargain Bee. When she wasn’t busy working, Natalie enjoyed bowling at St. Joseph’s, and attending bingo. She also spent many years volunteering as a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church—including their Ladies Guild, Youth Group, bingo, and religious education. Some of Natalie’s other hobbies included hosting Sunday dinner, watching UConn women’s basketball, and taking care of neighborhood cats. What Natalie loved most, though, was family. She took great pride in being a mother, grandmother, and wife. Natalie leaves behind her husband Albert Crochet, and their five children:  Deborah Crochet-Colangelo, Susan Crochet-Smith, Patricia and Robert Hinrichs, Peter and Stacy Crochet, and Lisa Crochet-Doucette, and her sons-in-law, Richard LeCuyer, and Darren “Mike” Smith. She also leaves behind her grandchildren - all who saw her as a second mother:  Ricky LeCuyer and Teresa Markowich, Albert and Sarah LeCuyer, Nick and Alyssa LeCuyer, Matthew and Anna LeCuyer, Patrick Smith, Mandi Hinrichs, Derek Hinrichs, Jon Hinrichs, Katherine and Alex Maldonado, Peter Crochet, Jr., Anna Doucette, Alana Doucette, and Glenn Doucette, Jr. With such a large family, one would think Natalie’s house was busy enough. However, she was thrilled as her family continued to grow, also leaving behind 10 great-grandchildren: Hailie and Aria Aponte, Chloe and Piper Plevka, Justin Wilson, Jaxxon and Sawyer LeCuyer, Jayden Meek, Ezra LeCuyer, and Jacob Maldonado. Natalie also leaves behind her sisters, Betty and Alfredo DiDomizio, and Mary Kudrikoff, several nieces and nephews, her best friend, Margaret “Marge” Hanley-Vallillo, and her friend, Father Norman Brockett, as well as the many people she knew and called “friend.” In addition to her late parents, Natalie was predeceased by her in-laws, Nicholas and Anna (Ambrozaitis) Crochet, her brothers, Nick Terni, and Alphonso Terni, and her sons-in-law, Glenn Doucette, Sr., and Mike Colangelo. Natalie will be remembered for her sweet tooth, incredible sense of humor, and her big heart. Saying she will be missed does not fully capture the magnitude of her presence, or how deeply and endlessly she will always be loved. Services for Natalie will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 785 Highland Ave, Waterbury, on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at 11:00 a.m.. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery, in Waterbury. Family and Friends are asked to meet directly at Church.

Anthony D. Mastroianni Jr. - February 17, 1960 - February 17, 2022

Departed: 02/17/2022 (Waterbury)
Obituary Preview: Anthony D. Mastroianni Jr., of Middlebury, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, February 17, 2022 (his 62nd birthday), at Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH), in Middletown, CT, in the presence of loving and caring hospital staff, whom Anthony considered “family.” Anthony was born February 17, 1960, the son of the late Anthony D. and Carmela Anna (Pannone) Mastroianni Sr. Anthony graduated with High Honors from Sacred Heart High School Class of 1978. Anthony was a very proud Boy Scout and Eagle Scout, who enjoyed spending time with his childhood friends, going fishing, bowling, and playing chess. Anthony also loved to scavenge for old glass bottles in the woods near his childhood neighborhood. As an avid bottle collector, Anthony came up with some pretty amazing and classic “finds.” From a very young age, Anthony was a championship accordion player, who won and placed in numerous CT State Accordion Playing Championships. Anthony’s passion for playing the accordion was second to none. He would go on to serenade his family for decades with his (and our) favorites, like “Beer Barrel Polka,” “Spanish Eyes,” “Somewhere My Love,” amongst other great accordion classics. Anthony’s’ longtime accordion teacher was quoted as saying that Anthony was “going places,” and was ‘’headed for Carnegie Hall,” with regards to his genuine accordion playing talents and gifts. It would turn out God had grander, much more important, and farther reaching plans for Anthony and his life. In his late teens, Anthony was diagnosed with a serious mental illness that changed the course of his life in the humblest and most unique of ways. Through his deep spirituality and sincere love of God and Jesus, Anthony was able to live his adult life with profound holiness, courage, and complete acceptance. He lived his life in such a way that would make himself and his family proud, and that would teach them all the true meaning of life itself. As a result, Anthony enjoyed his life -  even the simplest and most mundane events -  with a grateful heart, and to the greatest, most meaningful extent possible. His unconditional love of others was visibly evident through his words and deeds. Anthony thoroughly enjoyed Summers and family gatherings at the family’s retreat home,  “Trahou,” in Hollis, Maine. He loved the pine trees that surrounded the trailer-house. He enjoyed being with all his family overlooking Deer Pond. Laying on the beach in Old Orchard, under the pier with soda and snack in hand, watching beautiful scenery and enjoying nature before him, was one of Anthony’s most favorite and peaceful places to be. Anthony absolutely loved to visit The Lourdes Shrine in Litchfield, CT (a place that his grandfather humbly helped to erect).  Anthony so tirelessly enjoyed many different events at the shrine, some of which included outdoor Mass during the warmer months, walking the Outdoor Stations of the Cross, Christmas Eve Mass in the Chapel, the gift shop and snack shop, and just being there on their beautiful grounds for visits in general.  Anthony always felt so peaceful and "at home," when he was at the Shrine, where his spirituality soared. Anthony will be truly missed by all those so richly blessed to have a special share in his life. Anthony is survived by his four siblings:  his sister, LouAnn Larwin, of Waterbury, CT, his brother, Joseph Mastroianni, of Chicopee, MA, his brother, Domenic Mastroianni, of Hockley, TX, and his brother, Bart Mastroianni, of Lewiston, ME.  Anthony is also survived by his two nieces, Jacqueline Rose Marie Mastroianni, and Joelle Mastroianni (fiancé, Adam Kichard), and his two nephews, Gregory Mastroianni, and Joshua Larwin (fiancé, Brittany Guard). The family would like to sincerely thank and acknowledge the compassionate care and support given to Anthony throughout his life by the loving staff of:  Fairfield Hills Hospital, Waterbury Hospital, Sharon Hospital, Hebrew Health Care, Johnson and Memorial Hospital, Rose Garden Convalescent Care, Paradigm Convalescent Care, and Self-Incorporated. A special thanks goes to the entire caring staff of Connecticut Valley Hospital, and Middlesex Hospital, where Anthony spent the final 2 years of his life. Staff at both places greatly helped Anthony to be as happy and comfortable as possible. They were Anthony’s true extended family, who cared for him with genuine love and compassion, his dignity always maintained. A special thanks also goes to loving staff at Garden Brook Group Home, in Watertown, CT.  This is where Anthony spent the vast majority of his adult life.  While at Garden Brook, Anthony enjoyed special events, forging lasting and special friendships with many staff and clients throughout the decades. Garden Brook was truly Anthony’s “Home away from Home.” A Gathering of Friends and Family will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2022, from 3:00 p.m., to 6:00 p.m., at Colasanto Funeral Home, 932 Bank Street, Waterbury, CT. A Funeral Service will be held at 8:30 a.m., to 9:30 a.m., on Monday, March 7, 2022, from the funeral home, to The Shrine of Lourdes, 50 Montfort Rd., Litchfield, CT, for a Mass of Christian Burial, at 10:30 A.M.  Burial to follow in Mt. Alphonse G. Jarus - May 11, 1917 - June 11, 2021

Departed: 06/11/2021 (Waterbury)
Obituary Preview: Alphonse G. Jarus A great dad, husband, friend, and entertainer
Alphonse “Al” Jarus, 104, of Cheshire, formerly of Waterbury, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, on Friday, June 11, 2021, at MidState Medical Center in Meriden. He was the devoted husband of Evelyn (Valuskas) Jarus for 57 years until her passing in 2006.
Born on May 11, 1917, to Lithuanian immigrants Tekla (Paulius) and Jurgis Jarusevicius, Al was raised in the Brooklyn section of the city and attended St. Joseph School and Church, where he performed with the Lithuanian choir and formed a six-man band called The Young Melodians. He was also among the singers and dancers who performed for Lithuania Day at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. Al played baseball for St. Joe’s, and made the varsity basketball team in his freshman year at Crosby High School, but played for just one season because Saturday night games conflicted with his musical endeavors.
After high school, he went to work in the brass mills until World War II when he was called to serve in the U.S. Army Air Force. During his military service, he was appointed Technical Sergeant of the IV Corps Infantry Band, entertaining the troops stateside and later in the Philippines and Japan, alongside such celebrities as Red Skelton, Danny Kaye and Gary Moore.
Following the war, he married his sweetheart Evie, whom he had met in the choir at St. Joseph. He attended Post College and started a career at the Savings & Loan Association of Waterbury, which later became American Bank. He worked there for 35 years, first as Loan Officer, then as Seymour Branch Manager, and finally as Treasurer, before retiring in 1982. Al was often approached by Waterbury residents who wanted to express their gratitude for his assistance in acquiring loans for their homes and businesses.
But, really, Al was a musician who just happened to work in a bank. He continued to play trumpet and sing, first with his own band The Melodians, then at the Actors Colony in Derby for 13 years, and in bands with other notable local musicians including Carl Berg, Champ Siconolfi, Ted Grohoski, Israel “Goldie” Goldberg, and Vic Fuda. He helped make musical memories at countless wedding receptions, anniversary celebrations, and dances, and played “Taps” for many Veterans Day ceremonies on the Waterbury Green. Al also truly loved singing with the Waterbury Chorale through his 90s and well past his 100th birthday.
He was a longtime member of the musicians union, AFM Local 186, as well as the Knights of Lithuania Council 7. He was also an enthusiastic student at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UConn Waterbury, where he especially enjoyed performing in cabaret shows and Veterans Day celebrations.
Al and Evie made a loving home in Town Plot for their three children, Tom Jarus of Cheshire, Ellen Jarus Hanley (husband Scott Hanley) of Milldale, and Alan Jarus of New York City; and grandchildren Alexis Hanley (fiancé Sebastian Harris) of San Francisco, and Thomas Jarus Jr. (spouse Josh Hartmann) of Boston. They, along with Al's extended family, brother-in-law Edward Valuskas and his wife Bette of Waterbury; nephew Francis Rodgers and his wife Mary Ellen of Rhode Island; nieces Anita Rodgers of Waterbury, Valerie Rodgers and her husband Bob O’Sullivan of Torrington, Janice Valuskas of Waterbury, and Marcey Valuskas Tweedie and her husband Bill of Southbury; former daughter-in-law Maureen D. Jarus of New York City; and honorary son Anas Abouzaid of New York City; and his many friends and acquaintances, are grateful for all the love, music, corny jokes, hugs, and smiles that he constantly brought into their lives.
He is surely happy to reunite with loved ones who predeceased him: his sisters Vincenta and Natalie, his infant brother John, and his sister-in-law Agnes (Valuskas) Rodgers and her husband Tony.
Al lived and worked in Waterbury for most of his 104 years, and was very proud to be named the city’s Lithuanian Mayor for the Day in 1994, and extremely honored to serve a second “term” in 2017, the year of his centenary. At the time of his passing, he was enjoying life at Elim Park Place in Cheshire, where he had resided since 2016.
There was no stopping Al, even into his mid- to late-90s when he traveled with his family to Lithuania (twice!), traversed the U.S. by train (twice!), cruised to Bermuda, and attended the Lithuanian song and folk dance festivals in Boston, Chicago and Vilnius. Al loved people and made friends everywhere he went.
Calling hours will be held at Colasanto Funeral Home, 932 Bank St., Waterbury, on Friday, June 18, from 5 to 7 p.m., and on Saturday, June 19, from 8:30 a.m. until the funeral procession to St. Joseph Church, 46 Congress Ave., Waterbury, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, 669 Platt Rd., Watertown. Donations in Al’s name may be made to Camp Neringa, 147 Nering Rd., Brattleboro, VT 05301 (www.neringa.org). For online condolences, please visit www.colasanto.com.

Salvatore Joseph Edo - July 05, 1928 - May 10, 2021

Departed: 05/10/2021 (Waterbury)
Obituary Preview: Salvatore “Sam” Edo, 92, of Milford, Conn., passed away peacefully at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport, Conn., on Monday, May 10, 2021, with his family and friends close by. He was the loving husband of the late Patricia “Pat” (Dickerson) Edo for 46 years.
He was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on July 5, 1928, the son of Reginaldo and Maria Rosa (Prestia) Ido. His parents immigrated to America just after the turn of the century from Calabria, Italy. His attachment to his family in Calabria remained strong until the end.
Sam grew up on the East Side of Bridgeport, and held many fond memories of friends, families, and the “old neighborhood.” He attended St. Mary’s Church and St. Mary’s School, where a desire to enter a religious vocation led him to The Holy Ghost Seminary in Bensalem, Pa., at the age of 13. The draw of home and family led him back to Bridgeport, where he graduated from Warren Harding High School in 1946. Soon after, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served three years in the Pacific Theater as part of the U.S. occupation forces, after the end of World War II.
He returned to Bridgeport once again in 1949. Always the entrepreneur, he owned a variety of businesses, eventually establishing Mr. Sam’s Coiffures in Milford, Conn., where his beauty salon served the public for 40 years. He was cherished by the community and a friend to everyone. His generosity and respect for all was boundless, and his circle of friends seemed endless. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Sam’s greatest joy in life came from his family. On May 8, 1954, he married Patricia, and they raised their son Alan in Milford and then Orange, Conn. His two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren were the absolute delight of his later years.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, and seven siblings. He is survived by his son Alan and his wife, Millie; two grandchildren, Theresa and her husband Robert Freeman of Mansfield, Mass., and Joseph Edo of Milford, Conn.; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Luke Freeman; and a large extended family.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ann Church, 501 Naugatuck Ave., Milford, Conn., on Friday, June 4, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kings Highway Cemetery, 273 Cherry St., Milford, Conn.
