Doris Ann Marsh - September 30, 1943 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Boonton)
Obituary Preview: Doris A. Marsh, 80, of Montville Township, NJ died on March 21, 2024. She was born in Perth Amboy in 1943 to Melvin and Helen Christensen of Metuchen. Doris graduated from Metuchen High School in 1961. She married J. Lloyd Marsh in May 1962. They moved to Montville Township in 1979 and she remained in the same home until her death.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, who passed away in May 2004, and her beloved dachshund, Victoria, in 2008. Doris is survived by her daughter, Sharon, and her granddaughter, Mags.
Doris loved being a stay-at-home mom to Sharon. She volunteered at school events including Sharon's elementary school GS Brownie troop. Doris made the holidays happy memories, including painting ceramics for Christmas decorations and making chocolate chip cookies for Santa (a tradition now passed down to her daughter and granddaughter). At Easter time the basket always included a special chocolate rabbit from Nagel's Candy Barn, and hand-sewn Halloween costumes were extra special (Sharon's favorite was Princess Leia, of course).
In addition to the love Doris shared with her daughter and granddaughter, she also shared her life with a number of pets, including Freddie and Rosie. This passion grew by volunteering at local animal shelters. Doris’ happy place from springtime to the fall was on her deck at Otter Lake Camp Resort. She enjoyed going to Bingo with her friends, making crafts, and peace by the lake.
Doris will be remembered for being a strong woman and a very proud mother and grandmother. Sharon will miss talking to her mom about all the important and little things in life and showing her pictures from trips and events. Mags learned from an early age at the lake to take the little path to Grandma's site to have chicken nuggets, purple popsicles, and hugs. Doris’ memory will live on in the hearts of all the people who loved her. She'll be watching over Sharon and Mags during future milestones of life, including graduations and weddings, and all the happy moments to come.
There will be a visitation and prayer service from 4:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday, March 26th at Codey and Mackey Funeral Home in Boonton. To share condolences with the family please visit CodeyMackeyFH.com. Donations to the ASPCA in Doris' name would be greatly appreciated in lieu of flowers.
Peace to all.

William Henry Cunningham - September 05, 1956 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Boonton)
Obituary Preview: Willliam H. Cunningham, 67, of Boonton Township, NJ, passed away on March 21st, 2024. He is survived by his siblings, Jim (Chloe Callahan) Cunningham, Sue (Stephen) Fitzpatrick, Dan (Pam) Cunningham, and Linda (Jacques) Lemire; 9 nieces and nephews, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, William F. Cunningham and Regina F. Cunningham; and his brother, Thomas J. Cunningham.
Born in Bay Shore, NY in September 1956, Bill grew up in North Babylon and later, Islip. He received his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and then worked in Washington D.C. for the General Services Administration (GSA) for several years before earning his MBA from the Wharton School of Business. Bill then worked for Irving Trust, which later became the Bank of New York, where he managed large mortgages for regional banks. He was active in the alumni associations for both universities. Bill retired in 2000 and focused on managing his investments. He frequently wrote articles for the investing site Seeking Alpha, where he had over 2000 followers.
Bill had a lifelong love of travel and challenging himself, which led to a quest to climb as many of the Seven Summits (the highest peaks on each continent) as he could. During his lifetime he summited Mt Vinson in Antarctica, Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and Mt Elbrus in the Russian Urals. He also climbed Mt Rainier in Washington. Like the two times he ran the New York City Marathon, he set out on these endeavors with much enthusiasm and seemingly little training, but like his father, Bill had abundant self-confidence and rarely failed to achieve the goals he set for himself.
Bill was an avid genealogist and over the decades traced his family’s roots through many generations. He even visited several ancestral villages across Europe to get a better understanding of his family’s history. He also enjoyed cultivating relationships with newfound family members. It was not unusual for him to meet or become pen pals with relatives in their late 90s or even over 100 that he met through his genealogy research. He was the family historian, and we all knew that when an email from Bill came in, it was best to grab a cup of coffee or glass of wine and settle in to read the newest revelations. Brevity was not his forte (nor were the puns he was so fond of).
Bill had a passion for gardening and was a longtime member and past President of the Rockaway Valley Garden Club. He was proud of the projects he participated in that beautified the public spaces in his local area and he was instrumental in helping the club win several awards.
Bill was very social and enjoyed nothing more than doing a spur-of-the-moment get-together with a group of extended family and friends to attend a jazz concert in Manhattan, try a new restaurant, or take a tour of a botanical garden. Through the years he seemed to collect friends who treated him like family.
Bill earned his Eagle Scout badge by cleaning up a local park to improve the drainage and prevent erosion. This is the embodiment of how Bill lived his life—he had a big heart and enjoyed using his skills to help when others needed him. Funeral services will be held at Codey and Mackey Funeral Home in Boonton, NJ. Visitation will be on Thursday, March 28th from 3:00 - 8:00pm and Friday, March 29 at 9:00am with a service at 9:30am. There will be a family burial at Mount St. Mary Cemetery in Flushing, NY immediately following the service. To share a condolence or memory please visit CodeyMackeyFH.com

Ivars John Mise - October 27, 1937 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (Boonton)
Obituary Preview: My sisters and I once had a conversation about what words we would use to describe our Dad to someone who never met him. We deliberated…strong, stubborn, eccentric, mischievous, mastermind, resilient, adventurous? None of them truly captured who he was. That's when Elizabeth said, “There are no words for Dad, Dad is an experience”, and I can’t think of a more perfect way to put it. He was an experience to all who knew him. I am sure everyone here can think of at least one experience you’ve had with my Dad….whether it be good, bad, or questionable. He himself lived through countless experiences, starting on October 27th, 1937 in Riga, Latvia. He was born to Peter and Elizabeth Mise, a bank president and diplomat, later welcoming his younger brother, Alfred. Before his privileged life ever really began, it was shattered by WW2. My Dad and his family had to flee to Berlin to avoid Nazi invasion. In Berlin, he lived through devastation and sorrow. Bombs being thrown down around him. SS soldiers lining the streets. Being sent out as a small child with a white surrender flag tied around his arm just so he could buy milk and bread. As my dad has said, “I had the silver spoon ripped out of my mouth and they shoved in a wooden one with splinters.”
At 9 years old they left Berlin for Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Just him, his mother, and his brother. His father came to Brooklyn years later after the war but unfortunately died soon after, leaving my dad to be the provider. They had no money and didn’t speak the language, but that didn’t stop my dad. That fueled him. He made sure his mother and brother had a roof over their heads, food on the table, and clothes on their backs. He made sure Alfred got the best education he could.
As a young adult, he met his lovely first wife, Carole, and they raised my beautiful sisters, Elizabeth and Katrina. They left New York and came to the suburbs of New Jersey.
When the chapter of his first marriage closed, a new one opened with my mom, Margherite. They traveled the world and built a legacy together.
I think the five of us can agree he may not have been the most conventional husband or father, but he was irreplaceable.
If you knew my Dad at all you know there was always an angle, always a scheme, always an opportunity to learn, to grow, and most importantly, make money. This is something we often mocked. I see now that that was never something to be mocked. That was born of trauma and fear and love of his family. He worked every angle, concocted every scheme, and grabbed every opportunity to make sure that his family then, and his family now could have everything.
There are no words to describe how much he will be missed and nothing that could ever fill the hole now in our hearts and our family, but on days when it’s particularly hard I know I can find his strength and ambition in Elizabeth, his love of his family and faith in Katrina, his quick-wit and logic in myself, and his hard work, sacrifice, and legacy in everything I have.
This is where Dad would tell me, “That was some real Grimms brothers fairytale writing”, to which I say, Dad, you were something to write home about. Written by Krista Alexandra Mise, with Immense Love of Her Dad

The art pieces she left behind are only one reminder of the incredible talent she harbored.

Elizabeth Davie - May 16, 1940 - January 11, 2024

Departed: 01/11/2024 (Boonton)
Obituary Preview: Elizabeth (nee O’Neill) Davie of Rockaway Township, NJ died on Thursday, January 11, 2024, after a brief illness. She was 83.
Elizabeth was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and immigrated to America with her husband, Leslie, and their two oldest daughters in 1967. Later, a third daughter was born in New Jersey. Elizabeth lived in Newtown, CT before moving to Rockaway Borough in 1969 and then Rockaway Township in 1972. She also maintained a home in Edinburgh for many years.
She grew up in a mining village community in Edinburgh called The Jewel. Elizabeth was crowned the Gala Queen of the village in her teens. She worked in Manfield’s, an exclusive shoe store on Edinburgh’s world-famous Princes Street.
Her mantra in life was why go big when you can go biggest? Everything she did, she did to an extreme.
Elizabeth enjoyed volunteering at her daughters’ schools. She was president of the Morris Hills High School Home & School Association and threw herself into making its biggest fundraiser, the annual Chinese Auction, a huge success. Elizabeth and other members solicited donations from businesses ending up with tons of donations that they arranged into attractive displays. She herself sewed a pair of six-foot Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls to be auctioned. She passed on her detailed binder and her playbook for the auction so the success could be continued and it was followed faithfully for many years. Prior to that, Elizabeth served as the treasurer of the Sacred Heart School Home & School Association in Rockaway, where she helped run fundraisers such as the weekly bingo and the annual school bazaar. She also served as a room mother.
When her girls were older, Elizabeth dedicated herself to a daily fitness routine, and again, no half measures for her. She started with an early morning run down Main Street from her home to the center of Rockaway Borough and back. Elizabeth then returned home and got in her beloved 1978 Cadillac and drove to the West Morris YMCA where she was a founding member. At the Y, she swam and did weight training.
Elizabeth was an enthusiastic gardener and enjoyed working on the wood frame and stucco home in Rockaway Township the Davies moved into in 1972. It is a four-story house and she turned it into a showstopper with years of mostly do-it-yourself projects. Elizabeth planted hundreds of annual flowers around her home each year, in addition to cultivating many perennial plants that continue to bloom around the house today. She had a two-story flagpole installed in her front yard and proudly flew the American and POW-MIA flags. On patriotic holidays, she put flags and banners from telephone poles at the top of her street to the bottom.
Elizabeth rented a hand steamer and steamed layers of wallpaper off the plaster ceilings and scraped layers of wallpaper off the walls. She then had her husband help her wallpaper the house. Elizabeth made curtains and hung them. She loved decorating the house for Christmas and made many of her own decorations, including elves to put on the stairs for Christmas and artificial poinsettia arrangements she placed all over the house.
On one memorable occasion, Elizabeth and her husband spent a Saturday digging up ivy that covered half the front yard because she decided she wanted to replace it with grass. They were a little puzzled at the strange reaction of various neighbors waving to them and laughing. That's because they didn't know their daughters had planned a surprise 25th wedding anniversary party for them that night. Relatives had come from as far away as Ottawa, Canada; Green Bay, Wisconsin; and North Palm Beach, Florida for the event. And, of course, the neighbors were invited.
Elizabeth insisted on making the bridesmaid dresses for her oldest daughter’s wedding. Her mother and two sisters came over from Scotland for the wedding. She had them hand carry white heather wedding favors over for the reception because white heather, which is rare, is considered good luck in Scotland.
She enjoyed socializing and her friends introduced her to bowling when they invited her to join the Wednesday Morning Coffee League at Rockaway Lanes. Elizabeth loved to bowl. Soon she and her husband were in an evening league and she bowled in various leagues with friends and family over the years.
Elizabeth also was a reader of all sorts of materials from daily newspapers to poetry and she could converse with anyone about anything. She had a sharp sense of humor and loved a good gossip and a good laugh.
As much as she loved all these things, she loved nothing more than being a grandmother. She showered her seven grandchildren with attention and affection, hosting them for sleepovers, taking them to movies, bowling, to the mall, to arcades, to the diner and just generally spoiling them.
Elizabeth was a parishioner at Sacred Heart Church in Rockaway for many years and later Saint Cecilia's Church, also in Rockaway.
She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Leslie, in 2014. Elizabeth is survived by her three daughters and their families, Audrey Risberg of Rockaway Township, her husband, James, and daughter, Amanda; Alice Burnett of Long Beach Island, her husband, Robert, and daughters, Laura Foley, Lucie Magee and Leah Winkler; and Anne Mucci of Mountain Lakes, her husband, Ronnie, and sons Ronald, Joseph and Michael; and her three great-grandchildren. She also has relatives in Scotland.. Arrangements are private and entrusted to Codey and Mackey Funeral Home of Boonton. To share a condolence, please visit CodeyMackeyFH.com
